If you’re coming up short, hopefully this issue will remind you of the thoughtful, kind and generous people we have living among us as our neighbors and friends. Read all about the ways our community comes together during this time of giving. It always warms our hearts to see the myriad ways that South Fulton celebrates the holidays—family traditions, bountiful feasts and giving back to the community we call home. It is a pleasure to spotlight organizations that give back from the Girls of Excellence to Camp Southern Ground. This month, we hope your home is filled with the aroma of freshly baked sweet potato pies, the sounds of laughter around the table and the feeling of gratitude in your hearts.

It’s the small things that add more life! The City of South Fulton offers its residents something that we’re all learning, once again, to appreciate—quality of life. The big things—malls, franchises, big box chain stores—are not necessarily the things that make communities more livable. Little things often do that. With limitations on globetrotting, the essence of travel and experiencing new things is not only found in far off places. Exploring South Fulton and supporting local businesses can be fun and plays a key role in sustaining the community and showcasing it as a viable destination. Small business, local merchants, family-owned restaurants. Neighbors whose names you actually know. These things all help to make communities more livable.

ARTIST’S PALETTE HAMMONDS HOUSE GETS A NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND CURATOR KAREN COMER LOWE

The Jewel of
the West End KAREN COMER LOWE HAS A VISION. And it’s no small thing. She wants the Hammonds House to be a regular destination for your family locally and for Atlanta tourists alike. She visibly cringes when people call the museum a “Hidden Gem.” Since before she started the position as the Executive Director and Chief Curator there on June 1, she has wanted the Hammonds House to be a part of your regular Art Walk, the preface to your trip to the High, part of your date night Art Crawl in Castleberry Hill, or your class field trip. Your experience begins outside the building with quotes that position you in the context. “As curator, I can interpret the artist’s voice, to give you a deeper understanding and take you to a place you didn’t know you could go.” This summer Lowe curated an

outdoor exhibition entitled, “The South Got Something to Say,” referencing the pointed words of Andre 3000. “This phrase issued a proclamation about the rising impact of Atlanta as a city. Since that time, the city has risen as an influential force in music, film and politics,” said Lowe in a previous interview. But where this show displayed Atlanta-based

Bright and Dr. Fahamu Pecou and the ways they interpreted technology, the exhibit at Hammonds House is decidedly low key. The new exhibition features the museum’s permanent collection. My mouth was hanging open as I perused the space. “This is the foundation of African American art,” says Lowe. The exhibit features Charles White, Jacob Lawrence, and Elizabeth Catlett. Lowe has an impressive resume, working most recently at the Chastain Arts Center. She has built relationships with dozens of artists. My favorite spot in the museum is the room that features Mildred Thompson. Imagine my surprise when Lowe told me that she was actually Thompson’s neighbor and that they shared many friendly chats. Another favorite spot was the installation of Romare Bearden works. Lowe painstakingly reframed many of these pieces that were falling into disrepair in storage. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we do many things and visiting museums is one of them. Groups are welcome and encouraged to call ahead and make a reser-

AT JUST THE TENDER AGE OF 4, AN OUTGOING, OUTSPOKEN, AND OUTSTANDING CHILD. One of William’s first opportunities was as an extra on the hit series “Fatal Attraction.” After three days of production, it was clear that William was a star at being in front of the camera and memorizing his lines. The young actor would soon take private lessons at Catapult Acting Studios for four years. Dr. Charis Trench-Simmons recalls her son being responsible for getting his acting career off the ground. “We were sitting at Catapult, waiting on a class to start… William is kind of an old soul, so he just started talking to a lady who came in, and she ended up being an L.A. casting agent! So from there, she recommended us to our current Atlanta agent… and he’s just taken off from there,” says Charis. William is currently 8 years old and working with STW Talent. William gushed about the opportunity to meet new people and work with the cast and crew on set. Charis mentions being “amazed” at “how you can take several hours of filming different takes and put them into a TV show or a movie,” and watching her son be a part of that process has made her proud.

Before moving away from Los Angeles in 2004 and starting my family, I was heavily involved in activism, so the first thing that came to mind was how helping others always made me feel. I asked CJ, “If there was one thing you could do to prevent other kids from having these feelings, what would you do?” My goal was to pull out of him an idea of something he could give them. He told me, “blankets,” and that’s how our charity, Blankies 4 My Buddies, was born. XOXO Bijoux
AFROPUNK ATLANTA IS KNOWN FOR THEIR LIVE MUSICAL ACTS, MUSIC, AND CULTURE. But have you shopped with their vendors yet? #SoFu Lifestyle went to AFROPUNK Atlanta to check out the music and food, and we even met a few boutique owners from Atlanta. XOXO BIJOU XOXO Bijou is a polymer clay earring company based in Atlanta. They focus on handmade items with one-of-a-kind bold designs full of creativity. Niesha Davis founded the company in 2019 out of frustration due to a lack of chic clip-on earrings. She didn’t feel that the available designs represented something she’d wear. While complaining to her younger sister about the need for better styles and designs, her sister encouraged her to create her own and do it herself. Davis can only wear clip-ons, so who better to design them than her? She went on a quest to find a material to craft her earrings with and stumbled upon polymer clay. Davis’ passion for being crafty and creative drove her to figure out how to quit her day job and focus on full-time entrepreneurship. EVERY YEAR, THE IRS TAKES A SNAPSHOT OF WHAT THEY CONSIDER TO BE A MIDDLE-CLASS LIFESTYLE. They assign dollar amounts to specific categories, including the following: + Food, clothing, personal care products, and “miscellaneous” + Out-of-pocket health care costs + Vehicle ownership and operating costs + Rent or mortgage + Utilities, including gas, water, electric, cell phone, Internet, and more.
While these numbers are derived from federal studies, such as those from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Labor, some of them would leave you scratching your head in confusion. Even more confusing might be the regional variations

DR. FLAVA’S SHRIMP & GRITS
CULINARY CREATIONS
A SOUTHERN M U S T- H A V E : INGREDIENTS + Dr. Flava Spices: Cajun, NOLA TWIST, Garlic Herb, and Creole Delight + 1 lb large shrimp cleaned and deveined + 1 Tbsp grapeseed oil + 1/4 red and green bell pepper, diced + 1/4 red onion, diced + 4 strips turkey bacon + 1 cup quick grits + 1/4 cup heavy cream + 1/2 cup parmesan cheese + 1/4 tsp salt + Green onions + Assorted Dr. Flava Seasonings
RECIPE 01 Boil 3 cups of water and 1 Tbsp of grapeseed oil. Stir in 1 cup of grits, 1/4 tsp of salt, and dash of NOLA TWIST. Be mindful that grits added to boiling water can clump; stir briskly for about 5 minutes to create a creamy texture and shorten cooking time. Season clean deveined shrimp with ¼ tsp Spicy Cajun, No Salt Garlic Herb, and a shake of Original Everything. Drizzle with 1/2 tsp of grapeseed oil, toss and set aside. Check grits, stir briskly, and if too gritty add water and continue to cook. Add parmesan cheese. Let cook on low consistency until thick and creamy not gritty. 02 Use a nonstick skillet, turn the temperature high, add turkey bacon, and let cook until done for about 5 minutes. Remove from the pan and add the seasoned shrimp to the pan (bacon drippings add “Flava”). Cook shrimp on high temp for 1 minute and turn heat to medium to give a nice sear; cook for only 5 minutes. 03 Remove from the skillet and add the diced red and green bell peppers, red onions, 2 Tbsps of water and let steam. Sauté for 2 minutes and add 1/4 cup of heavy cream; cook on medium and stir to keep from overcooking. It should get thick; add 1/4
