It’s the small things that add more life! The City of South Fulton offers its residents something that we’re all learning, once again, to appreciate—quality of life. The big things—malls, franchises, big box chain stores—are not necessarily the things that make communities more livable. Little things often do that. With limitations on globetrotting, the essence of travel and experiencing new things is not only found in far off places. Exploring South Fulton and supporting local businesses can be fun and plays a key role in sustaining the community and showcasing it as a viable destination. Small business, local merchants, family-owned restaurants. Neighbors whose names you actually know. These things all help to make communities more livable.

TRAVEL DESTINATION

A PLEASANT SURPRISE

ARTICLE PATRICK T. COOPER

Enchanted in El Paso EL PASO COMPRISES AN EXPLOSIVE NUCLEUS OF SISTER CITIES AND NATIONAL PARKS TO CAPTIVATE YOU. From Elizabeth Taylor’s short nuptial to Nicky Hilton and their brief frolic at the city’s Plaza Hotel to the brief commute to sister Ciudad de Juarez, this region of the world bears a unique spirit and brilliant smiles. Frankly, the stereotypes of border city chaos are a figment of the imagination. Form your perspective by traveling to this western Texas gem. Often overlooked due its distance from the capitol city of Austin, El Paso is inevitably associated with the threat of cartel violence, or some media spin designed to divide mankind. Unbeknownst to me, I was greeted with warm hospitality and an eagerness to educate by Latino, Chicano, and Hispanic descendants. I am delighted to have explored this region of the world to gain insight and grow my knowledge base of people that face challenges and still rise above and defeat discrimination through sheer determination. El Paso is an experience that eclipses the notion that brown people are lazy. Quite the opposite, El Paso represents the true definition of the American spirit and accomplishment. Moreover, this haven of honest work, unconditional love, and communal cohesiveness make El Paso a destination where your eye will wander well beyond my eight reasons, but at least you have a starting point of reference.

will

stay.

Centrally located and recently renovated to include three on-site restaurants and a rooftop pool and spa, this hotel is elegantly adorned to serve as your ground zero. In the heart of downtown, this choice accommodation will grant you easy access to external attractions. From breakfast at Sabor to dinner at 1700 and Happy Hour at the Dome Bar, this hotel experience will be nothing short of exemplary. CIUDAD JUAREZ An undefinable love waft between sister cities, El Paso is a stone’s throw to sister city Ciudad Juarez. Citizens of both countries move across the borders daily. It is an inexplicable harmony that I believe the United States of America should learn to practice. To walk or drive may present a little congestion, but overall, crossing the border was a breeze. It may have been because my visit was on the weekend, but at every turn I would see the community celebratory optics of the quinceanera. And of course, experiencing the tall tales of tequila and margaritas were a high priority on the agenda. Kentucky Club and Grill is the home of the original margarita in downtown Juarez. Step back in time with a tour guide to when this landmark bar was considered to supersede the hype of the Las Vegas Strip. Prior to prohibition, Americans would flock here to experience the intoxicating joy of liquid libations.

TRAVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)

ROCKETBUSTER BOOTS Boots are synonymous with Texas culture. Visiting the multiple outlets to maximize and stretch any shopping budget is strongly advised, however, for the ultimate boot-making and design experience, one must make an appointment at Rocketbuster Handmade Custom Boots. Style mavens, prepare to dash beyond mass production into an atelier of customization. Led by a larger than life personality, Nevena Christi follows no rules and marches to a drum that celebrates originality, to say the least. Honestly, I was in awe and a bit anxious because the options are limitless. Boots will literally be calling your name from the interior shelves. Dare to be extraordinary and find yourself in the mixed company of notable dignitaries and celebrities that flock to Rocketbuster to create statement wardrobe pieces. WHITE SANDS Mounds of gypsum make for monumental optics or the perfect selfie. In the neighboring state of New Mexico, White Sands National Park, located a short day drive away, is nothing short of phenomenal! As far as the eye can see are rolling dunes, defining the word “whiteout.” Caution yourself to pick a dawn or dusk adventure, as the mid-day sun is blinding. It is also paramount that you wear contrasting colors so you do not disappear in the photos. LAS CRUCES AND MESILLA Las Cruces is another sister city—a shopper’s paradise and a quick jaunt from downtown El Paso. First stop in Mesilla, New Mexico, is the Double Eagle Restaurant to fuel up on delicious food and haunted stories of the mansion that will make you shiver. Indecisiveness may be your enemy, as the town square is riddled with silver jewelry and unique stones to make your eyes dance. The quaint, charming cluster of boutiques is tempting with delicate works of art to adorn your body.

ZIN VALLE VINEYARDS Rosé anyone? Now that your attention is garnered, get ready to enjoy a refreshing family owned and operated winery experience. Under the white clouds of the Texas sky, sink your feet into the soil and feel the passion permeating throughout this destination, which makes it an award-winning establishment. Owner Kathi Poulos is ever eager to pour a delicious sip of perfection at Zin Valle Vineyards. Be sure to sample the Desert Rosé! LUCCHESE Take the Lucchese manufacturer tour to see how the legendary brand creates comfort and timeless style. Lucchese is a staple in American culture and is a prominent business entity headquartered in El Paso. Fortunately, shoppers can take full advantage of factory deals that will leave your pockets heavy and your feet lighter, as your investment in footwear will cost a fraction of the usual retail spend. Bargains always make for glowing travel memoirs! CITY MURALS The El Corrido del Segunda Barrio mural celebrates the struggles and heritage of El Paso and is the last stop on the 10-city mural tour. The people and personalities are what make this city sparkle. World-renowned artist Juan Gabriel’s presence is earthly evident and thrives to celebrate humanity in the border community from El Paso to Ciudad Juarez. The murals illuminate the struggles and perseverance of a community. While this mural spoke volumes, there are multitudes of city murals that celebrate, educate, and enhance this city’s landscape. Step into the colorful humanity of El Paso, Texas, and experience peace of mind.

CHEF LORENZO W YC H E O F T H E B R E A K FA S T B OYS FROM HARLEM BAR TO THE BREAKFAST BOYS, LORENZO WYCHE IS THE MAN TO THANK FOR HIS ROLE AS ONE OF THE FEW PIONEERS OF ATLANTA’S BRUNCH SCENE. After earning a degree in Restaurant Management, the New York native was inspired by his father to make his way South to begin his business ventures, where he would soon make his first million by just 26 years old and come

Atlanta and Miami, Florida. Chef Wyche wanted to modernize Black culture within Atlanta’s restaurant scene. Fed up with the usual “scoop of mashed potatoes, canned green beans, and then, a tablecloth over the table… they said it was… soul food fine dining,” he knew the city had more to offer and he set to work to present “a more polished technique on the food.” “You want that richness with the mac and cheese,” he explained. “You want a great fried chicken; you want delicious vegetables, and a more upscale polish to it.” This idea became his muse for his first three restaurants in Atlanta: Harlem Bar, RARE, and Social House. Wyche didn’t stop there. He recounts how brunch at Justin’s kicked off the brunch experience in Atlanta with a great number of celebrities like TLC, Chaka Khan, and L.A. Reid who dined at his restaurants. Wyche was sure that he could continue these ventures at other restaurants after he sold some of his own in 2014 and transitioned into consulting. He made his way to Miami and Dubai to help launch local brunch spots there. Of course, what stands out most here are his newest opportunities in College Park with Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar and The Breakfast Boys. Wyche is hoping to collaborate with other investors and restaurants on the West Coast, as well as opening a second Breakfast Boys location in Conyers.

direc t ions Stephan C. Baity, father of four: Seth, Olivia, Mikayla, and Judah Rose, is a culinarian, and a proud native of Canton, Ohio. After graduating culinary school in 1999, he spent time at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, studying under internationally known chefs. Being mentored by some of the greatest in the field and working in many venues from catering to contract management dining, he’s found that the key to success is being courageous enough to try something new and taking the risk to believe in yourself! While he is best known for his creativity and flair for dramatic plating, in recent years he has burst onto the fruit and vegetable sculpting scene. As the founder of Graffiti Carving, he’s taken home the gold in several sculpting competitions. As an artist he uses the canvas of fruit and vegetables to send a unique message that encourages other culinarians to push the boundaries. His philosophy is “Boxes are for dead things. If you want your work to live on, break out of the box!” His sense of adventure, humor and work ethic is his trademark. HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

I N F L A M M AT I O N THE FAMOUS GREEK PHYSICIAN HIPPOCRATES SAID, “LET FOOD BE THY MEDICINE AND LET

THE ROOT CAUSE OF ALL CHRONIC ILLNESS

MEDICINE BE THY FOOD.” This advice stands the test of time. Another saying, “You are what you eat,” really holds true even in these uncertain times. The words “inflammation” and “anti-inflammation” have been found in plenty of conversations as we press through this viral pandemic. WHAT IS INFLAMMATION? WHY IS IT BAD FOR US? WHAT DOES FOOD HAVE TO DO WITH IT? Inflammation is a part of your body’s normal response to an infection (viral or bacterial) or injury, such as a trauma or fall. Inflammation is the root cause of all chronic illness. In truth, chronic inflammation plays a role in almost all types of chronic illness. In most cases, chronic inflammation is silent (subclinical) and in some cases, it can be deadly. Chronic inflammation can persist for years and trigger adrenal fatigue and an autoimmune cascade (called a cytokine storm).

HERE ARE A FEW SIMPLE RULES OF THUMB FOR ANTI-INFLAMMATORY EATING:

HOW FOOD AFFECTS INFLAMMATION The choice of food you eat can have a huge impact

5. Poor sleep habits 6. Environmental toxins 7. Blood sugar imbalances (uncontrolled type 2 diabetes).

In conclusion, lifestyle and diet changes can decrease inflammation, pain, and occurrences of chronic diseases.

Additional factors for chronic inflammation are obesity/fatty liver, toxins, and drugs. The good news is that anti-inflammatory foods tend to be the same foods that keep you healthy.

FINANCIAL BUZZ

MORTGAGE REFINANCING IN A LOW INTEREST RATE ENVIRONMENT

OWNING A HOME IS A HUGE PART OF AN INDIVIDUAL’S FINANCIAL PICTURE. A mortgage is typically the single largest investment an individual or family will make in their lifetime. I often get asked about when it’s the right time to consider refinancing an existing mortgage. There are a lot of considerations that factor in this critical decision, including term (number of years), rate, the individual’s personal financial situation, economic conditions, job stability, and more. That said, it is always appropriate to periodically evaluate a mortgage, and even more so in an interest environment like the current one. I was looking on the internet recently and noticed that mortgage rates for refinancing are as low as 1.75% for a 15-year fixed mortgage. On a $250,000 mortgage, the payment for principal and interest would be $1,580.15 without any escrow for taxes and insurance. A similar term at a rate of 2.75% (which is a great rate historically) would be $1,696.55. The source that I used is one that is very familiar in the mortgage and finance industry: BankRate.com. This site has nationally accredited lenders that have several options for a client to consider but is one of many sites that provide access to multiple lenders. In this evaluation, please be cognizant of closing costs, fees, escrow, and other factors that will influence the payment that a household will incur. There are numerous mortgage/financial calculators available online that can assist with this evalu-
