Broome comes to the City of South Fulton from the Valdosta, Georgia Fire Department, a position he has held since March 2014. As the Fire Chief in Valdosta, Broome provides leadership and management for the Administration, Operations, Training, Fire Prevention, Maintenance and Special Operations Divisions that consist of 108 staff members, six individual fire stations and one regional Georgia Search and Rescue Team. During his tenure as the Valdosta Fire Chief, Broome maintained a department budget over $8 million. Chief Broome was responsible for leading the Valdosta Fire Department to an ISO Class 1 rating, and the department is currently working towards becoming an accredited agency. Chief Freddie Broome has 23 years of experience in Fire Service and is actively involved in the Fire Profession by serving on several committees. He holds an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Protection Technology from Forsyth Technical College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology with a Concentration in Fire Safety from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Master of Public Administration degree with a concentration in Public Management from Appalachian State University. Many, especially my male patients, request consultations for herniated discs and sciatic nerve pain after exerting themselves in the gym for the first time in years. Others will return for chronic joint pains and degenerative spines that persist partly due to excessive weight, poor sleep habits and a sedentary lifestyle. At Alliance Spine & Pain we believe in comprehensive pain management that addresses your mood, activity level and medications, and optimizes your level of function. Below are my top recommendations to safely reach your fitness goals this summer. DO: Ease into your fitness routine - if you haven’t been in the gym for months start slowly. Set reasonable goals and be consistent. The key to maintaining your routine lies in picking an activity that you actually enjoy. Consider aquatic aerobics, spin class, Pilates or brisk walking. DON’T: Focus on weight loss only. Some of the “invisible” benefits of increased aerobic activity are: improved heart function and strength, a more robust immune system, improved cholesterol profile and more restful sleep. Pearl: Mayo Clinic researchers have found that brisk walking for 30 minutes daily trims your waistline, improves mood and reduces risk of heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. DO: Focus on core strength and stabilization- your abdominal muscles help to counterbalance the forces on your spine. A weak core with abdominal obesity is a main contributor to chronic back pain. DON’T: Ignore the importance of diet and nutrition management - Portion control is key, but you should also avoid skipping meals and late-night eating. Pain fighting nutrients are those rich in antioxidants. Pearl: Every 1lb of belly fat equals 3lbs of weight on your back because of the mechanics of your spine.

THE NINTH ANNUAL ATLANTA ICE CREAM FESTIVAL WILL FEATURE AN ASSORTMENT OF LOCAL AND NATIONAL ICE CREAM VENDORS. This exciting festival which encourages attendees to indulge in a variety of ice cream delights while maintaining a well-balanced lifestyle will take place Saturday, July 27, 2019 from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. in Atlanta’s historic Piedmont Park. South Fulton Lifestyle had the opportunity to chat with AICF Executive Director Kevin James. From a huge dream that AICF Executive Director Kevin James had back in 2010 at the festival’s inception, the festival has grown into an event that attracts Atlantans from all over the metropolitan area. It’s a one-day festival that invites the young and the old to come out and enjoy a day filled with lots of family fun, fitness routines, health and wellness activities and of course, plenty of ice cream! This year, the festival is pleased to announce that for the fifth year in a row, Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority is once again the presenting sponsor. FDHA will be offering free health and wellness screenings for everyone inside the Wellness Pavilion. Lots of people ask about the connection between ice cream and health and wellness. James believes in moderation. For example, at the Atlanta Ice Cream Festival, the ice cream eating contest consists of a single scoop. The creativity comes in how quickly you can eat the scoop, without a spoon! “It’s all about balance,” according to James. Moderation along with activity (and it takes plenty of activity to eat a scoop with no spoon) in the contest is in and of itself a symbol. With over 60,000 in attendance last year, this festival is sure to be a treat again this year! “Ice cream truly takes people to a happy place,” said James. It’s his pleasure to present this fun festival in the heart of the city. 24

JOINING ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY JUST MIGHT HAVE LED TO ONE OF THE BEST DECISIONS DREMA LEE WOLDMAN HAS EVER MADE. Woldman recalled being invited to another member’s son’s party and the child was part of Top Teens of America, sponsored by Top Ladies of Distinction. “I had never heard of them but was impressed by the event and that it provided scholarships and had a component for children,” said Woldman. Top Ladies of Distinction is a nonprofit professional humanitarian organization that organizes talents, energies and skills of women across the nation in a collaborative effort to alleviate moral and social problems confronting youth. “In order for you to have a chapter, you have to sponsor a group of teens from 13 to 18 and implement a program that helps them with academic achievement, leadership skills and cultural enrichment,” said Woldman. Over the years, Woldman worked her way up to becoming the national president of the organization. She strove to grow the organization, whose only qualification for membership is to have a desire to serve the community and be sponsored by a current top lady. There have been many memorable experiences, including a bullying program with the National Institutes of Health and a visit to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Many programs have become traditions, such as those with the March of Dimes, which has partnered with the organization since 1985, and St. Jude, who will be named a permanent partner at this year’s Atlanta conference. Woldman is excited about what the future holds, including potential programs on Alzheimer’s and mental illness. 30

When Woldman is not busy with Top Ladies of Distinction, she enjoys spending time with her two daughters, two sons and five grandchildren. She loves gardening, playing Scrabble and watching television. Though her time as the national president is ending, she assured us that she is not going anywhere. “I have to stick around to see that the things I started
