Beyond the bed, the suite’s balcony made for the perfect office backdrop. Creative floods flowed as my mind felt free, fueled by aesthetically pleasing scenery.

Is Regenerative Medicine Right for You? By Pickens A. Patterson III, MD lliance Spine and Pain Centers (ASPC), including the Camp Creek location, is proud to offer regenerative medicine techniques for the treatment of chronic hip, knee, back and neck pain. Regenerative techniques have historically been used when other forms of more conservative treatment are unsuccessful, however with the emergence of new techniques and protocols, it is now becoming a first line of treatment. Regenerative medicine is an emerging field focusing on using cells and substances from your own body to heal damaged tissues. It encompasses the now common term “stem cell.” Stem cells are usually derived from a patient’s bone marrow or fat cells, and use the healing substances found within those cells to regenerate damaged tissues. For example, when stem cells are injected into a severely painful, cartilage-damaged knee, regeneration can occur of some of the damaged tissues leading to pain relief and improved function. Another common regenerative medicine technique is the injection of plasma rich protein (PRP). This involves removing a patient’s blood, and then removing and concentrating the plasma that naturally includes powerful healing and anti-inflammatory factors. The PRP is then injected into the affected area and stimulates healing, diminishing pain and improving function. There are other regenerative techniques including, but not limited to, liposomes and A2M, which any of the doctors at Alliance Spine and Pain would be happy to discuss with you. It is important that you research and trust your doctor before undergoing any regenerative medicine technique, especially since this is currently a non-insurance covered option (ASPC has financing options to fit your budget). As a new field, ensure you and your doctor have realistic expectations and that your treatments are FDA compliant and from a reliable source. The best way to do this is to find a board-certified pain specialist with training in regenerative medicine, and to establish a patient doctor relationship rather than responding to an add promising a miracle with “stem cells.”
