Alston topped her historic kick with a second score, when she kicked an extra point in Westlake High’s defeat of Marietta’s Wheeler High School. Alston credits Westlake High’s football coach Kareem Reid for giving her a chance to play the sport. “My parents and I are grateful to Coach Reid for allowing me this opportunity,” she said. “He and my teammates have welcomed me on the team and I appreciate that.” Alston was inspired and motivated to play football after having spent time on the soccer field, where she learned to kick and punt. For other young women who have desires to play football, she has this advice: “If you believe in something, you should make it happen. You should be able to do anything.” After graduating this year, Alston plans to go on to college and major in Sports Medicine.

PEOPLE WITH A SWEET TOOTH RECENTLY GATHERED AT ATLANTA’S COBB GALLERIA FOR GEORGIA’S LARGEST BAKING AND SWEETS SHOW—THE ULTIMATE SUGAR SHOW. The event attracted throngs of people and included competitions, classes and numerous activities. All ticket sales from the event benefited the AFLAC Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. Attendees visited various booths and stations within the Galleria and enjoyed samples of sugary treats, products and much more. Whether you enjoy designing desserts or were looking to stock up on the latest bakeware, this event was for you. Attendees were also entertained by live demonstrations on the main stage, including one by Cake Things about how to create a tiered cake. Francesca Amiker, anchor and reporter from 11Alive in Atlanta, delighted the crowd as the emcee. Amiker donned custom-painted heels of cookie art and a glorious hat made of sugar for the Southern Lady Hat Exhibition. The exhibition proved to be quite the main attraction featuring edible hats. Rebekah Wilbur designed her edible creation, a white hat made of wafer paper and accentuated with a white gingham-printed ribbon and daisies. The hat, modeled by Wilbur’s daughter, Esme, was inspired by the Kentucky Derby. “I like Southern fashion so the Kentucky Derby was the inspiration for the hat and I 16

chose to do daisies and magnolia and very Southernstyle flowers,” said Wilbur. Vibrant green peacock feathers were the inspiration behind local Atlanta pastry chef Sierra Russell’s edible hat. Attendees also admired and photographed dozens of desserts on display, which were also pieces of art, including numerous Black Panther creations and a cake depicting Scarlett O’Hara from “Gone with the Wind.” The event, held just in time for the holiday season, was a great time for foodies all while benefiting a great cause. She avoids dairy, limits her sugary carb intake, eats organic and stays away from processed food. “The fuel I put into my body directly affects how I feel and perform,” said Welker. As far as performance, Welker focuses on the muscles in her legs, back and abdomen. “A strong core with lean, powerful legs is important for any dancer,” said Welker. Welker cannot be found at the gym, as she prefers to work out at a Pilates studio. She is proud to have made a return to the stage after retiring from her professional career of 23 years for a performance of “Fall.en.” Her typical day consists of lots of teaching for ballet and Pilates, and even with the rigorous training, there is nowhere she would rather be. She hopes readers will strive to support local arts organizations and attend shows. “It is necessary for quality of life and community, because dance is something that everyone can and should enjoy both in watching and in their own bodies,” said Welker. If you are looking for a a new way to get healthy and fit in the New Year, dance may be your answer. “Movement is beautiful,” said Welker.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE ARTICLE DR. TOSHA ROGERS
Tips From Dr. Tosha Rogers: A Pap Smear Could Save Your Life PAP SMEARS. Ughh!!! Everybody hates it, right? It’s weird and uncomfortable, and it may tell me something that I don’t want to know. I wish I could make the idea fun, but I can’t. I hate them myself, but I recognize that it could save my life. When was your last Pap? Are you sure? Just because the speculum (clamp) was used doesn’t mean you had an actual Pap smear. What were you tested for? What were the results? Did you know that Pap smears actually check for cervical cancer? Did you know that cervical cancer is sexually transmitted 97% of the time? Did you know that this is the single most preventable cancer? Although Pap smears are not the most fun thing to do, they are necessary. Cervical cancer is caused by a virus called HPV. HPV is acquired by having unprotected sex. It only takes one unprotected sexual encounter to acquire HPV. Having yearly checks can closely monitor your cervical health as well as your HPV status. Even in women who are not sexually active currently, Pap smears are still necessary, as you were active previously and there is still a 3% chance of developing cervical cancer outside of HPV. Use your gynecology visit as a time to discuss all of these topics. Open up. Discuss what’s on your mind—it could save your life. Just because you think something is “normal” doesn’t mean that it is. Mentioning a concern could be life-changing. January is Cervical Health Awareness month. Challenge yourself to conquer your fears. Call your gynecologist. Schedule an appointment to have a conversation and examination.

CULINARY CREATIONS ARTICLE RECIPE BY CYBIL B. TALLEY
Snack Well This Season THINK STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE IS JUST FOR DESSERT? Think again! This calcium-rich smoothie satisfies the sweet tooth while also still helping you maintain your New Year’s resolution to eat healthy. Greek yogurt lends extra-creamy richness and a powerful punch of protein. Whole strawberries add a boost of fiber and vitamin C. Don’t skimp on the graham cracker crumbs—they give it the full effect of a tasty cheesecake crust. Smoothies are one of the most flexible recipes that I know, so don’t think twice about substituting your favorite flavor Greek yogurt to add your special touch. Start or end your day on a sweet note with this Strawberry Cheesecake Smoothie.
STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE SMOOTHIE MAKES 2 TO 3 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS
+ 2 (5.3 ounce) cups strawberry
cheesecake-flavored Greek yogurt + ½ cup milk + 1 cup ice + 1 cup whole frozen strawberries + ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract + 1 tablespoon graham cracker crumbs
(use more or less to your taste) + Whipped cream (optional)
DIRECTIONS
» Place yogurt, milk, ice, strawberries, and vanilla extract in a blender, and blend until smooth. I like to leave mine on the thick side, but blend to the consistency that you prefer.

appy New Year South Fulton-ers! It’s the beginning of a new year, and I know many of us will set our sights on meeting our New Years’ resolutions. If your number one resolution is to lose weight and become healthier, join the club! And while research shows that only 64% of us will maintain our resolutions through the end of the first month of the New Year and less than half will be maintained through six months, this year can be different! The key is to keep it simple, realistic and safe. As an interventional pain management physician, I often treat patients for herniated discs and sciatic nerve pain when they over exert themselves in the gym for the first time in years. Many of these patients are fed up with their creeping weight gain and sedentary lifestyle, and desperately want a new lease on life. A setback due to injury is a sure way to derail their hopes for the New Year. Below are a few of my personal recommendations to increase your activity in 2018. • Take the opportunity to stand – If you have a sedentary job, you are spending many hours of your day sitting relatively still, and burning very few calories. You would have likely eaten 2-3 times during the work day, and at the end of the day, you may be tired but trying to muster the energy to workout. Consider standing more at work. A standing desk can be a great way to increase your activity and combat the negative effects of a sedentary job.

• Incorporate activity into your daily routine – Researchers have found that brisk walking for 30 minutes daily will trim your waistline, improve your mood and even reduce your risk of heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. So, take your dog on a brisk walk instead of letting the dog out in your yard. Take the stairs at work instead of the elevator, or grab your lunch to go and take a walk during your lunch break.

• Ease into your fitness routine – If you have not been in the gym for months start slowly. Set reasonable goals and remember that consistency is more important than short-term gains. The key to maintaining your routine lies in picking an activity that you actually enjoy. If you have never liked running, now is not the time to start. Consider yoga, spin class, or Pilates.

GRADY HEALTH CARE SYSTEM ANNOUNCES THE RECENT OPENING OF THEIR NEW CAMP CREEK COMPREHENSIVE CARE CENTER. A state-of-the-art facility for various types of patients, the center will be equipped to handle multiple forms of healthcare in one location. “We’re calling it a Comprehensive Care Center because it’s a onestop shop for patients, where they can get most of their healthcare needs handled at one location instead of having to travel to multiple locations, different clinics or hospitals,” said Dr. Kelley Carroll, Grady Health System’s Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care Services. According to Dr. Carroll, the overall goal is to provide a facility that can cater to the needs of multiple patients. This center is not only equipped to handle primary care concerns like adult medicine, pediatrics and OB/GYN but also specialty services. Some of the specialties include cardiology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, colonoscopy, labs and images (mammograms, CAT scans, X-ray, MRI). Another point of interest is the location. The new center will exist down the road from Camp Creek Marketplace. “We know that this is a growing area and there isn’t a big presence of a healthcare center. This community is growing and needs this facility,” said Dr. Carroll. Wellstar

South is the only large healthcare facility in that area. However, it can only provide general services, emergency services, and less than a handful of specialties. Grady’s new facility is offering a place where patients can not only get the care they need but also additional services that would normally require going offsite. Similar large healthcare facilities are either located near Downtown Atlanta or outside of the I-285 perimeter. Grady Health Care System’s Camp Creek Comprehensive Care Center opened in December. 30

PARTING THOUGHTS
St r e s s L e s s a n d F e e l B e t t e r This Year with Mindfulness CREATE A STRESS-FREE YOU FOR THE NEW YEAR WITH MINDFULNESS EXERCISES
MINDFULNESS IS SIMPLY FOCUSING ONE’S ATTENTION ON THE PRESENT MOMENT WITHOUT JUDGMENT. Not only will you stress less with regular practice, you will also reap benefits like improved general health, mental clarity, better sleep, and a greater sense of connectedness. These five easy and effective exercises can help you jump start your practice and find your inner calm. + Mindful Breathing – Breathe through your
nostrils for 6 rounds per inhale and exhale. Feel the air moving in and out of your nose. Do this for a minute or more and notice how much more relaxed you feel. + Mindful Moving – Practices such as
yoga and martial arts exercise the mind and the body. Even with just a few sessions, you may start to feel less stressed and notice an improvement in your overall health. + Mindful Listening – Ever just want to be
heard? So does the next person. Connection reduces stress, so give another the gift of your undivided attention without judgment when they are speaking and you will feel even more connected to them as they will feel toward you. + Mindful Observation – Wherever you are,
whatever you are doing, pay attention. Pay attention to your breath, to your emotions, to your bodily sensations, to external stimuli. That’s it. Just notice without judgment and you will actually feel less stressed and more focused. + Mindful Rest – Sleep is so underrated, but
sometimes falling asleep is not easy. If that is the case for you, go back to mindful breathing. Just breathe and allow sleep to come. You’ll be amazed at the benefits of a good night’s rest. Start your mindfulness journey with yoga at
