“HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS” HAS BEEN USED FOR AGES TO GET PEOPLE TO RECONNECT WITH “HOME,” I.E., FAMILY. As much as we may love the people that live there, if we're honest with ourselves, home has become quite stressful. A study conducted by the American Psychological Association states that women are more likely to report having a great deal of stress, and almost half surveyed have experienced more stress in the past five years. Men have mastered the art of reducing stress in the home by retreating to their man-caves for hours and some, even days (not in my house)! Some women may likely say that their significant other is selfish, but maybe they are onto something! Everyone needs a sanctuary to spend quality time with themselves. My personal Zen is my workout space, right in my office. I bike, row, run, do yoga, HIIT cardio, all in a corner of my office. When I go in and close the

LAST MONTH BERT'S BIG ADVENTURE SURPRISED FAMILIES WITH A TRIP OF A LIFETIME. After careful consideration, as well as sorting through hundreds of applications, the Bert’s Big Adventure selection committee chose 13 children and their families to be a part of this year’s trip. The 2018 families arrived at the Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel to kick off day one of their magical journey and from there the organization embarked on the 16th annual trip to Walt Disney World®. Two special families from this year’s trip include Zy F. from Fairburn and Khairi B. from Hapeville. Bert’s Big Adventure is a nonprofit organization that provides a magical, all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World® for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. To qualify for Bert’s Big Adventure, a child must be between the ages of 5-12 years old and live in “The Bert Show” listening area, prove financial need and have never been to Walt Disney World®. here is often confusion about the role and definition of a pain management specialist in the media, the general population, and even amongst other medical professionals. First, a pain management specialist physician is NOT a physician who chooses to prescribe opiates for chronic pain when other physicians no longer wish to prescribe them nor is a pain specialist a physician who has taken a few continuing medical education hours in pain management. In the current state of opioid crisis in the United States the media and the masses often confuse a physician who writes narcotics as their primary mode of practice with a well-trained, board certified specialist in the field of pain management. A pain specialist IS a physician who has obtained a medical degree, successfully completed all requirements for medical licensure, completed a primary residency (usually in anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehab, and occasionally neurology) and then completed additional training in the form of a fellowship in pain management. Complete training in pain management takes approximately 13 years including undergraduate education. Finally, a fully trained pain management physician will generally take the time and effort to show their competency in the field by obtaining board certification in both their primary field of specialization (ie anesthesiology) and secondary certification in their subspecialty of pain management by an ABMS recognized board. With internet access it is very easy to verify the training and certification of any physician. A pain management physician is trained in the management of medications, including opioids for the management of chronic painful conditions, however most well trained pain management physicians use interventional procedures (injections), physical therapy, psychotherapy, chiropractics and other treatment modalities to reduce or illuminate the need for narcotic medications. In more severe cases, implantable devices such as spinal cord stimulators and intrathecal pain pumps can be used to treat those who suffer with chronic pain. If you are not being treated by a board certified pain specialist you are likely not being offered all of the latest procedures and technological advances available to those suffering from chronic pain. A welltrained pain management physician aids in fighting the opioid epidemic.
