Fitness Can Be Fun!

he new year is a time for new beginnings. Look at our cover model, Pierre. He’s been in the game a while and just keeps coming back, a new version of himself. In addition, there are the kids from IDareU. They are perched on the edge of their future, with college and career in their view. The future looks bright. This issue is all about fitness and healthy living. Can’t say I’ve ever been the biggest athlete but for the record I did play the Rat King in the Albany Ballet Theater production and that takes some sort of physical coordination and skill. Nowadays, I stay far away from Zed Carter and his threats of whipping me into shape at boot camp. You’ll find me at barre or Zumba with Narviar at the Walter and Andrew Young Family YMCA. I was on the swim team and still swim a lap here and there but that’s the extent of it. If ya’ll wanted marathons, you should have had my publisher write this letter. I said all that to say, do what makes you smile. Exercise that is fun no longer feels like exercise. For example, in this issue check out my review of TopGolf. Can I golf, at all? No. But was it fun, absolutely. There’s lots of fun stuff in this issue! Enjoy!

n a chilly fall Friday, I gathered 10 of my friends for a no-real-occasion outing. We just wanted to get together and hang since we don’t do that often enough with our busy schedules comprised of work, kids, etc. We had an absolute ball! The manager, Clayton, was a gracious and handsome host as he showed us to our bay. Even the newbie golfers enjoyed shooting for the targets to get points and some of the guys got quite competitive. This was the perfect spot for a nice date (for a special occasion; it can be pricey during prime time), girls’ or guys’ night out or birthday party. Even a corporate social would be well suited for this venue. The food is good and the drinks are great! We showed up at 7 and experienced the shift in atmosphere as the more professional happy hour feel gave way to an excellent DJ with more of a party atmosphere. My girls and I couldn’t keep our seats and got up to show off our moves! Did I mention the excellent drinks? I recommend the Tipsy Palmer, made with fresh brewed tea, Sweet Tea vodka, Citron vodka and lemon. I had a couple and they were potent, not too expensive and tasty. What’s more… my golfing skills actually improved as the night went on. Ha!

Serious golfers who brought their own clubs mixed with the many amateurs who were there just to have fun. We sat in one of the comfy bays with sofas that were perfect for lounging. Despite the chill in the air, the heaters kept us quite comfortable and we were even able to shed our jackets. My food recommendations include the cheese fries and pickle fries, a skinny fried pickle with ranch dipping sauce that tastes so yummy. The wings were solid (try the Mango Habanero and the Asian Sesame) and we LOVED the injectable donut holes for dessert. The Bavarian cream filling was the best! They even offer a brunch menu and y’all know how much I love brunch. I was even able to watch my beloved Florida State Seminoles play on the big screens in the upscale sports bar-like atmosphere. My friend Jaqueline said she loved the concept and being there with a group, as opposed to mini-golf that is better for couples. “It’s sort of like bowling. You can suck or not play at all and still have a great time,” she said. Going with a group also helps defray the cost a bit. The midtown location is the second one in the Atlanta area and is very convenient to South Fulton. Y’all can get there in about 20 minutes or stop in on your way home from work to unwind. ierre Edwards was an Army brat, a carefree kid growing up in the shadow of the

military base in Germany. A born performer, he enjoyed putting on shows for family, sol-

diers and strangers alike at the fountain in the city’s center. From a young age, he craved the attention and the sound of laughter he inspired. When his German mother and American father moved to the United States, he found Washington, D.C. to be quite a culture shock. Young Pierre stood out: biracial, awkward and with curly hair hanging down his back like Prince, he quickly learned how to defend himself against bullies using comedy. He was a bright young man and finished his work quickly in high school. He spent his extra time reading the newspaper, which is where he discovered comedy as a career. In the midst of the Eddie Murphy era, Pierre began to frequent Open Mic Nights in his community. He would channel Rodney Dangerfield, telling the “black version” of similar stories. When he was challenged to write 5 minutes of jokes, he discovered he could make people laugh by simply telling his own story. A GOLDEN AGE

Pierre entered the Golden Age of comedy playing comedy clubs with the likes of Dave Chappelle, Martin Lawrence, Tommy Davidson and Wanda Sykes. He performed at the Apollo, BET ComicView and on various late-night shows. When a promoter for Def Comedy Jam saw Pierre during the first season of that show, also where Robert Townsend saw his work, the way was paved for Pierre to break into the movie industry with “BAPS” in the 90s, playing Halle Berry’s boyfriend. When the door to Hollywood opened, Pierre recast himself as a movie star, moved to California and was featured in “How to Be a Player” with Bill Bellamy, probably his most famous role. He went on to star in “2001: A Space Travesty,” where he worked with Leslie Nielsen and tried to upstage the older star. He played roles in “The Wash” and “The Breaks.” Pierre soon discovered a new Hollywood role and began writing, penning and starring in “For Da Love of Money.” This cult classic remains in rotation on BET and the Bounce network. And I found out that writing is very important,” he reflects. Tiring of the L.A. scene, Pierre bought a house in Arizona. With a renewed enthusiasm for comedy, Pierre returned to Atlanta to try his hand in the new Hollywood of the South. He waxes nostalgic about the Atlanta of the 90s. “I miss early 90s Atlanta, when everything was chill and the natives were more relaxed,” Pierre says, recalling the pre-Olympic charm of Atlanta culture. As a result of “slicksters from the North” coming here to get rich, “Atlantans are more suspicious and some of the Southern hospitality that was here is lost,” says Pierre. A TRIPLE THREAT

Reinventing himself once again as a triple threat, Pierre recently wrote, produced and directed a series of movies called, the “Slice” trilogy. The horror/comedy series invites viewers to guess “Who Done it?” Pierre is proud of the story and the way he keeps viewers guessing right up until the end of the film. More projects in the works include the development of Pierre’s successful web series, “Dating Pierre” into a half-hour show on Kevin Hart’s new LOL network, being hailed as a kind of urban Netflix. “Dating Pierre” is all about the perils one can face being single in Atlanta. So you can imagine the follies that occur. If you’re not following Pierre on social media, you’re missing over 100 hilarious, uncensored skits. Reflecting on starting over and the many starts and stops he has experienced in his 20 years in the movie industry, the comedian and actor says that sometimes taking a new approach is in order. “Sometimes you just have to walk away. Emcee for the evening was South Fulton’s own Shaunya Chavis-Rucker, broadcast personality, and division chief for the Fulton County Office of Broadcast, Cable and Film. Special guests included Miss District of Columbia 2016 Cierra Jackson and Sheryl Howard of the Dwight D. and Sheryl H. Howard Foundation. Honorees included Georgia State Sen. Donzella James (D), who represents the 35th District that includes portions of Fulton, Clayton and Douglas counties, Myrna White, director of public affairs for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Taliah Waajid, founder of Taliah Waajid Natural Hair Care Products and DeMario Pressley, former NFL defensive player. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport was title sponsor for the 2016 gala.
