Doubters didn’t believe me and haters did what haters do, but we had an outstanding season and who would have thought that we would end up at the Super Bowl!? And guess what? Our team is young and full of winners and hard workers that are hungry and our coaching staff and front office team are determined. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we end up in the Winner’s Circle again. I take my Falcons seriously because I know our organization cares about military families and survivors that our soldiers and Marines leave behind. I just wish my Marine was here to see his favorite team soar and to experience the sports town that Atlanta has become! In this issue, you will literally find something for every sports fan: a spotlight on Westlake basketball’s Coach Darron Rogers, and for tennis enthusiasts, Hometown Hero and South Fulton’s own, Donald Young. More than $1.4 million was distributed to 60 nonprofit organizations in Publix’s Atlanta division through the 2016 fundraiser. dwin Jackson, also known as “Pound Cake,” is the starting linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts heading into the 2017 season. A native Atlantan, Edwin began playing football in the eighth grade. Originally inter-

ested in playing basketball and baseball in the Sandtown and Benhill Park recreation leagues, Edwin had no idea that he’d end up where he is today. He gave football a shot

and fell in love with it. Edwin played football at Westlake High School, and while he didn’t receive a scholarship, he did not allow that to deter him, trying out for the Georgia Southern University team as a walk-on. The rest is history. Edwin left Georgia Southern as one of the school’s all-time greatest linebackers. In June 2015, Edwin was an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals, starting out his professional career. However, he wasn’t picked up by the Cardinals and instead received an invitation from the Indianapolis Colts to be a part of their team. He immediately flew to Indianapolis to join the Colts’ practice squad, where he remained for the Colts’ final three games and ultimately made the Colts’ final roster in 2016. Edwin has worked his way up from simply being a special team’s player to the starting linebacker. In his spare time, Edwin enjoys giving back to the community. “It's truly a way to show your former coaches, teachers, parents, and just the entire community that you are thankful,” he shares. “I remember players from the South Fulton area, such as Sean Jones, Pacman Jones, Keyaron Fox and Calvin Johnson, always coming back to spread love. I knew at an early age that I would do the same once I made it.” Edwin says he wants young people who look up to him to remember that difficult times will come, but patience and hard work are key. He advises young men who want to pursue a career in football to get a quality education and understand their passion without football. he odds were stacked against him because of his environment. Growing up in Dixie Hills off

Simpson Road in the late 70s with five other siblings made life even harder. Nevertheless, Coach Darron L. Rogers Sr. beat the odds one day at a time. "I was raised pretty much in a single-parent home. My father wasn't there a lot of the time. My mother was my hero. I saw her struggle and sacrifice so much for my brothers and my sister. She sacrificed for me to play basketball and football, and my drive to make her proud has had a lot to do with my success," Rogers says. The success that Rogers is referring to is being a Championship Basketball Coach of the Westlake High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team. Coach Rogers has been teaching in the Fulton County School System for 34 years. He has coached basketball at Westlake for 27 years and served as head basketball coach for 22 years. He has truly put in his time. Under Rogers’ leadership, the Westlake Lions won the 1999 Boys 3A State High School Basketball Championship after having an undefeated season

with 33 consecutive wins. In 2006, the team went 32-0 and lost in the Boys 5A State High School Basketball Championship game, unable to tie the previous record, but that was no failure for Coach Rogers and his team, because of the lessons learned along the way. One of the most important messages Rogers teaches his players is to get an education. "Education is key toward advancing in everything you do. I came out of the projects and graduated from Morehouse College. The preparation I received on the high school level prepared me to excel at Morehouse," Rogers says. He further explained that nobody expected him to do well at Turner High School, much less graduate from Morehouse College. Regardless, he not only excelled academically but athletically as well, attending Morehouse on a football scholarship. “I saw many of my friends during our teenage years drop out of school or go to jail, and going to college wasn’t an

Though Donald is now only 28 years old, he is a veteran of the professional tennis circuit. He turned pro in 2004 and has been consistently getting better. So far, 2017 looks like it may be one of his best years yet. He reached the finals of the French Open in doubles and has accumulated over $500,000 in prize money in just the first seven months of the year. Lessons from the Oracle of Omaha

ne of my most profound learning experiences occurred on a day trip to Omaha, Nebraska, to

meet Warren Buffett, the Oracle of Omaha. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised after spending a little time with the third richest man in the world ($75.2 billion in assets), who has donated more than $37 billion to numerous charities. I first noticed the ease with which he connected with everyone and anyone in the room; second, his sense of practicality was greater than probably anyone I’ve ever known; and third, I witnessed his legendary dedication to routine and consistency is true. Buffet starts each day driving his Cadillac a few miles to work from his 5-bedroom, 2.5-bath stucco house he purchased in 1958 for $31,500. Each day, he eats breakfast at McDonald’s and never spends more than $3.17. And yes, he eats lunch at the same place every day and eats the same meal and dessert too. One valuable nugget I will always remember is the value he associated with the cost of his $100 annual online bridge club membership, where he makes the time to play bridge with his best friend, Bill Gates. He said it has more “utility value” than the $1 million in annual operating expenses for his private jet. He told us that alongside his good health, he values the diverse friendships he has made in his life. The first question everyone asks me about my trip is “What did you ask Mr. Buffet and what financial investment tips did you get from him?” I took advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to get to know a humble, wealthy man. We talked college basketball, Creighton and the NCAA, because he is a big fan. Here are my key takeaways from my visit with Mr. Buffet, aka the Oracle of Omaha:

• Wealth is about what you don’t see. Possessions don’t bring you happiness. • Your time is a precious resource: “Keep your calendar free from useless meetings.” • Live a lifetime of learning... Mr. Buffet spends 80% of his day reading to obtain knowledge. 22

he smell of fresh wood, the sight of your favorite team’s logo, and the satisfaction of an ice-cold drink. These are the sensa-

tions inspired by having your very own custom cooler. The Rustic Club furniture company specializes in making custom cedar coolers right here in metro Atlanta. The story of how this local business got started goes back to the early 90s, when Titus Allen was a student at Morehouse College looking for a part-time job. Fortunately, he instead decided to begin a lifelong fascination with woodworking. “I had bought a waterbed for my first apartment; putting it together I had an awakening,” he remembers. “Until then I wasn’t a very creative person, but I instinctively knew how to build furniture. I started visiting stores, studying the designs of beds and futon frames. Soon after that, I was making furniture in my bathroom—sawdust was everywhere! Woodworking has been a passion of mine ever since.” Fast forward 30 years… what began as an Instagram post showing off a new backyard project has turned into a calling. “The response from that post was amazing! People I had never met were contacting me asking for a cooler,” says Allen. TRC coolers are now being shipped nationwide, and some clients take them overseas. TRC recently finished a cooler for a West Point grad who will be taking it to NATO headquarters in Belgium. Every TRC cooler starts out with the wood and most of the components are 100% cedar, but they also use weatherproof composite materials. The coolers can be used outdoors on the patio, at a tailgate party (it has wheels) and in the man cave. One of the more remarkable features of the cooler is its bottle opener. TRC uses an exclusive “magna-catch” magnetic bottle opener that doesn’t allow bottle caps to fall to the ground. “People say it looks like magic when their caps stick to the wooden surface,” says Allen. TRC coolers can be made in any color, with an infinite variety of designs or school/team logos. “Once I started offering Morehouse and Spelman designs to former classmates, everyone wanted their school too,” he says. New and exciting opportunities have been presented to TRC, which plans to start offering fraternity and sorority designs, including the “Divine 9” Greek organizations. Also in the works is a plan to move into the commercial sector.

“ercocet…Molly, Percocet!” Atlanta native and trap music icon Future repeats this phrase in the chorus of his chart topping single entitled “Mask Off”. Millions of hip hop fans sing along and dance to the rhythmic beat set to lyrics that highlight one of the nation’s most deadly public health crises. Metropolitan Atlanta, as well as rural Georgia has been plagued by the epidemic of narcotic overdoses stemming from Percocet tablets laced with other potent narcotics like Fentanyl. While Future, Lil Wayne, Jay Z and many others rhyme about the recreational use of prescription drugs, there are numerous high profile celebrity deaths that drew much needed attention to the scope of the opioid problem. Whitney Houston, Prince, Amy Winehouse and Pimp C are just a few whose deaths were implicated by prescription drug overdose. Does the prevalence of drug references in popular culture drive the demand for opioids for recreational use? Policy expert and social scientist, Professor James Peterson, asserts that the drug references in contemporary music do not contribute to the opioid epidemic in any statistically significant way. Rather, the evidence would suggest that the deceptive marketing efforts of the pharmaceutical industry and irresponsible prescribing physicians bear the majority of the responsibility for the current epidemic. But while the glorification of opioid use in music is not responsible for increasing dependency, I would argue that it serves to normalize the behavior and makes it more difficult to combat this uniquely American public health crisis. In fact, the United States is the highest consumer of oxycodone and hydrocodone in the world, with the total annual American consumption of 27 million grams of hydrocodone dwarfing the combined consumption of Britain, France, Germany and Italy. Moreover, the prescription drug crisis implicates another more universal epidemic – illicit drug abuse. According to the CDC, people prescribed and addicted to opioid painkillers are forty times more likely to become heroin addicts than those who do not use opioids. As policymakers and public health officials enact legislation to curb this scourge, we should take heed to words of conscious musician/poets like Chance The Rapper who shared his personal struggle with Xanax and uses his platform and microphone to educate the masses on the ills of chemical dependency.

CELEBRITIES HIT THE LINKS AT EAST LAKE FOR A WORTHY CAUSE T

his summer, celebrities headed to South Fulton’s East Lake Golf Club to support the Warrick Dunn Charities’ 7th Annual Atlanta Celebrity Golf Classic. This tour-

nament is the exclusive signature fundraiser of Warrick Dunn Charities and a premiere social event to kick off the summer. The golf tournament was held on the beautiful and historic grounds of Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club. Since 2010, the event has brought together business executives, celebrities, corporate sponsors and athletes with the purpose to raise funds that benefit programs of Warrick Dunn Charities. The weekend started with the Celebrity Pairings Reception at Greystone at Piedmont Park Conservancy. The cocktail reception included live and silent auctions and celebrity golfer pairings. The golf tournament continued the next day with 120 participants, all trying to win the coveted champion’s cup. This year’s winner was former NFL star and current sports broadcaster Sterling Sharpe, with the team from Idealease. Second place was the Bentley Automotive team playing with Takeo Spikes, a former all-pro linebacker and current NBC sports personality. And in third place was former MLB and NFL player Brian Jordan, a hometown favorite, with the team from Country Financial. Other celebrity athletes in attendance included former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, Atlanta Hawks player Kent Bazemore, and Arizona Cardinal Larry Fitzgerald, among others. For those who missed the event, there are still plenty of ways to help this worthwhile 501c3 charity by donating online. All donations go to Warrick Dunn Charities, which was established in 2002 to expand the Homes for the Holidays initiative and to explore and produce programs and services for single-parent families. Homes for the Holidays provides opportunities for economically disadvantaged single parents and children to achieve their dream of homeownership. games based on offensive prowess. The defense struggled in the first half of the season. And Matt Ryan had to outscore teams. The defense, led by Vic Beasley and Desmond Trufant, improved in the second half. Sadly, the injury to Trufant at the end of season had some negative effects the Falcons couldn’t overcome, as Tom Brady torched the Falcons secondary. Trufant is back and healthy. Beasley is in great shape. The defense has also added several legit players. Several NFL scouts expect the Falcons to be a Top 10 defense. If so, they’re a Super Bowl contender on that alone. MATT RYAN. It’s highly unlikely he’ll match his numbers from last

year’s MVP season, however, he doesn’t need to. He just needs to match the performances consistent with his career—with the exception of 2016.
