Where dark, brown paint dominated the decor for more than two decades, the walls, trim, and fixtures are now modern and bright. The new motif is more reflective of the organization thriving outside of the clubhouse, on the course’s 27 holes of championship golf. 2020 was Yankee Trace’s best year yet. The course accomplished the feat of nearly 70,000 rounds of golf, as the community celebrated 25 years along Yankee St. in Centerville. “This comprehensive renovation was designed to grow business. aesthetic,” Yankee Trace Administrator Steve Marino said.
Marino said that the team reused materials when possible— like painting chandeliers and table bases—and deferred to expert opinion on where to save on costs. Jennifer Kelleher Wiley, an interior decorator with MODA4 Design, worked extensively on the project. She is also the lead designer on downtown Dayton’s Arcade project. “My vision for the space at Yankee Trace was to create a comfortable, classic, and sophisticated environment that can be used for multiple types of events, from weddings to business events. We want the space to serve as an elegant backdrop, so events can take on their own personality in the space,” Wiley said. Wiley says that her goal was to enhance the beautiful space already in the building. “The lighter colors and updated lighting—as well as some new focal points, like a bar and dressing up the fireplaces— have added a lot to the space and allowed it to stand out,” she said. The remodel centered around the lobby, ballroom, and restaurant areas. The restrooms, as well, were essentially gutted and redesigned. Now each restroom has a separate lounge area for guests and event hosts, which includes new wooden lockers on the men’s side. “The improvements are phenomenal. I hope this shows the city’s commitment to continuing investing in community gathering spaces. We saw during the pandemic just how important places like The Golf Club at Yankee Trace are for exercise, dining, and fellowship,” Centerville Council Member Mark Engert said. Construction

The next phase of the remodel will focus on the patio space behind the clubhouse. Plans call for expanding the patio and creating tiers of seating and event space. The bar and fireplace will likely be shared indoor-outdoor spaces, and designers are working to make many of the areas functional through the colder months.

THE DAY TON ARCADE REVITALIZED 18
South Dayton Lifestyle | September 2021
PRESERVING HISTORY, ESTABLISHING THE FUTURE: HOW THE DAYTON ARCADE IS DRIVING DAYTON’S ECONOMIC INNOVATION
FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 25 YEARS, A DAYTON STYLISTIC AND CULTURAL ICON HAS OPENED ITS DOORS AGAIN AS THE HUB OF THE CITY. This historic building is not only stylistic and reimagined, but also at the forefront of community and economic redevelopment in Dayton. The Dayton Arcade—the landmark of Dayton’s central business district and the city in general—is being redeveloped, with a mix of retail, offices, event space, and housing. This redevelopment plan recasts the Arcade in much the same way it was initially developed in the beginning of the 20th century; but the vision is clearly rooted in the future, as an iconic, stylistic space for innovation, arts, and education. The South Arcade, the first phase of the project, opens to students at the University of Dayton in 95,000 square feet of academic and innovative space known as The Hub Powered by PNC. The South Arcade also includes 110 residential low-income housing

kitchen program; multiple event spaces; and food and beverage focused retail. The second phase, the North Arcade, will include a marketplace retail and restaurant environment, as well as a boutique hotel. “The Dayton Arcade is a powerful draw, the centerpiece of the city. So many Daytonians have a personal connection to and story about the Dayton Arcade,” explained Megan Dunn Peters, Arcade community manager. “It could be where they worked in the city, had lunch, visited with family, or went to the Christmas Market. The transformation of the Arcade celebrates Dayton’s past, but looks to its future as a cultural destination city and a hub for arts and innovation.” Stylistically the Dayton Arcade was cutting edge when it was built between 1902 and 1904. Standing 70 feet tall, the Rotunda

its iconic and beautiful glass roof. The Arcade had the latest innovations of the day, including elevators and power plants. Dayton is known as “The Gem City.” Peters believes the Rotunda was the gem of the city, standing tall in the landscape. The space had distinctive style from the beginning. All nine buildings have a unique and different style, including Italian Renaissance Revival and Dutch style design. At almost a full city block, the Dayton Arcade was designed as a city within a city. With $96 million raised for renovation, there is an attention to detail and a commitment for adaptive reuse, where possible. For example, the original marketplace floor is being repurposed for the in-the-round theater in the Arcade. The windows are being redone by hand, to allow this historic stylistic vision to come to life. This style

Their origin predates the American Professional Football League, the original name for the NFL. The team organized under the Triangles name in 1916, comprising employees of Delco, the Dayton Metal Products Company, and the Domestic Engineering Company. The league itself did not organize until 1920; the first game was held on October 3, at Triangle Park.
