CULINARY CREATIONS

THINK ABOUT “SOUTHERN COOKING,” AND YOU MIGHT THINK OF ANY NUMBER OF DISTINCT HOME-COOKED DISHES. What you may not think about are the roots of these recipes and how they were developed and passed down. Michael W. Twitty is a culinary and cultural historian who has studied the impact that slavery and traditions coming from enslaved Americans have had on the cuisine we think of as Southern. In his book The Cooking Gene, he looks at the history that impacted some of these favorites.

BEATEN BISCUITS + 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour + 1/2 tsp. sugar + 1 tsp. salt + A few small pinches of baking soda + 2 Tbsp. lard or shortening + 2 cups cold water Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix dry ingredients. Cut in the lard or shortening, and pour the water in a bit at a time. Knead together, work into a ball, and place on a flat surface. Pound with a solid rolling pin or even a mallet or hammer for 25-35 minutes, or until the dough appears smooth and blisters. To form the biscuits, take the dough, pinch it up, and form into a small ball. Pat down, and prick in two or three rows with a fork. Bake the biscuits for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. MORE THAN SKIN DEEP WHAT A DERMATOLOGIST CAN TELL YOU ABOUT SKIN CANCER
SUMMER IS HERE! With the longer days and increased time in the sun, it is a great time for us to focus on sun protection and routine skin cancer screening. There are three types of skin cancer, with melanoma’s being the deadliest. More than 85% of skin cancer is related to sun exposure, so it is important to be diligent about our skin’s health. South Dayton Lifestyle reached out to Dr. Shalini Bahl, to learn more about skin cancer protection. Dr. Bahl is a board certified general and cosmetic dermatologist and founder of Ace Dermatology, Laser and Cosmetics in South Dayton. With almost 20 years of experience, Dr. Bahl is highly trained in the detection and treatment of all types of skin cancer. “The skin is the largest organ of the body and the window into a patient’s internal health,” she said. “Dermatologists can be the first to detect lupus or early onset diabetes, based on a skin finding in a routine skin cancer screening. As a dermatologist, I am not only able to diagnose and treat skin disease, but I am able to help a patient’s self-esteem and confidence with intervention.” Dr. Bahl recommends these steps to protect your health.

Here we suggest several day trips in the Dayton area that might be ideal ways to celebrate with all of the dads you love.

The world’s largest aviation museum is right here in the Dayton area, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The National Museum of the United States Air Force boasts a number of galleries and exhibits, ranging from the early years of flight through the Cold War and journeys into space. With free admission and parking and a variety of rotating exhibits, the Air Force Museum is well worth a day or two spent exploring.

Dad out to the ballgame. The Dayton Dragons, Dayton’s own minor league baseball team and the High-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, has been attracting capacity crowds since the opening of Day Air Ballpark. The park is known for its ease of viewing, with every seat in a great position to view the game. Tickets sell out quickly, so pick up a pair for you and Dad (peanuts and Cracker Jacks suggested, but not required).

What better place to walk and talk (or just enjoy the scenery) than John Bryan State Park? Located near Yellow Springs, the park offers a number of hiking trails, plus opportunities for boating, camping, and mountain biking, among other activities. The state park is pet friendly, making this a great choice for those who wish to celebrate with their furry family members. The nearby Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve provides additional hiking opportunities.

SCOTT
STALLINGS’
WORKOUT
LIKE MANY IMPRESSIONABLE KIDS WITH GIDDY ENTHUSIASM FOR THEIR FAVORITE SPORT, SCOTT STALLINGS DISCOVERED HIS INTEREST FOR GOLF AT THE YOUNG AGE OF 3.
But it was the “aha moment” for his LOVE of the game that came in 1997 when Tiger Woods won the Masters and would forever change the entire landscape of the industry, as well as what Stallings would aspire to achieve in his future professional endeavors. Little did he know at the time, however, not just how successful he would become, but also how an unforeseen health compromise would also rock his world, and his cross training, for the better.
ARTICLE CITY LIFESTYLE
FROM 3-YEAR-OLD PUTTER TO ALL-AMERICAN GOLFER: STALLINGS’ BACKGROUND Born in Boston and raised in Oak Ridge, TN, Scott set off on his golf career at the early age of 3 and trained his way through achieving all-state golfer and Dean’s List status in high school. He was a seven-time tournament winner and was an All-American while attending Tennessee Tech, and he has won on the PGA Tour three times as a professional golfer. Upon realizing earlier in ‘97 “that Woods wasn’t that much older than him,'' Scott set himself into overdrive to “get it together” and tapped into his natural drive to be one of the best. CONTINUED >

SCOTT’S HEALTH PROBLEMS AND DEVELOPING A NEW WORKOUT
Flash forward to the year 2016: It became a life-changing year he never would have anticipated; one filled with strife as he learned he had been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and acute adrenal fatigue. It was a result of some unhealthy nutritional habits, both of which affected his ability to continue effectively as a professional athlete. With the guidance of doctors, surgeons, and his good friend Rich Froning, a four-time Crossfit champion, Scott developed a workout to trim 60 pounds, boasting 10% body fat, revising his daily eating habits, and sleeping healthily through the night.
26
South Dayton Lifestyle | June 2021
THE WORKOUT BASICS:
STALLINGS’ PRIMARY EQUIPMENT: KETTLEBELLS - Cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle attached to the top; ideal for exercises that combine cardio, strength and flexibility training. BARS AND WEIGHTS - A long iron bar on which weight plates are placed. Weights come in a variety of styles, including weight plates, barbells and dumbbells. DUMBBELLS - Short barbells, usually held in each hand MEDICINE BALLS - Weighted balls roughly the diameter of the shoulders that are used for strength training and rehabilitation
HIS TOP EXERCISES:
KETTLEBELL POWER SNATCH: Uses ground force to leverage the kettlebell upward, then the shoulder, arm and back support the weight as it gets pushed overhead. Also a great cardio exercise and trains the body for a good golf swing.

tomorrow, and you’ll never look back.” Had Scott not gone to the doctor because of that innate fear, he never would have known the diagnosis of sleep apnea that needed to be addressed. “You only get one body,” he says. Luckily for Scott, he didn’t have an overwhelming, crazy life overhaul. Instead, he was able to find one small thing, delivering simple systematic changes in his workout that led to his improvement in fitness and quality of life. He still was driven to be one the best PGA Tour players and the best family guy he could be, and he would do all of the discovery, the surgeries, and the daily changes all over again to continue living his best life. “I legitimately have some great people push me and stay around me,” Scott says. Scott has traveled the world over, playing on some of the best courses around, from Augusta National twice, to courses across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the hope to cross the Middle East and more stunning destinations in New Zealand off his global travel list. His next “bucket list” trip? Golfing 36 holes a day across seven courses on Long Island, some of the top in the country all within 20 miles of one another— and you better believe Scott “teed up” a “fitness test” among him and his two buddies to see who would fare the best in the end.
Today, Scott happily shares healthy time with his wife and kids and is leading up The Scott Stallings Kids Play Free Junior Golf Initiative, a partnership with the Tennessee Golf Foundation to bring free junior golf to the Knoxville area. “The mission is simple: Provide Knoxville's youth with unrestricted, free access to the game of golf at multiple facilities, 365 days a year,” he says. Look for Scott Stallings to be the first PGA Tour professional and mainstream athlete to represent NOBULL, a footwear, apparel and accessory brand that aligns perfectly with Scott’s train-hard story. 28

THE “E” STANDS FOR EXHILARATING
It ’s no su r pr ise that a recent a r ticle i n Busi ness I nsider sa id the Musta ng Mach-E is giv i ng Tesla a r u n for its money.
THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WHEN I SLIPPED BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE ALL-NEW, ALL-ELECTRIC FORD MUSTANG MACH-E SUV WAS THE LARGE TOUCHSCREEN COMMAND CENTER MOUNTED ON THE DASH. It immediately imparted a futuristic feel. When I started it, I heard...nothing. “Is it running?” I thought to myself. One touch of the accelerator immediately answered that question. This baby had no issues with get up and go. The Mach-E GT Performance boasts 0-60 in 3.5 seconds. Honestly, while driving, I felt like there wasn’t another car on the road that I couldn’t take! I suppose Ford couldn’t give it the Mustang name and badge without including the feel of the ponies under the hood (even though there’s nothing actually under the hood but a trunk). As expected, this car is loaded with fantastic features, but most impressive was the range—up to 300-miles! With an MSRP starting at $42,895, this car is the perfect marriage of luxury and future technology. If you’re a gearhead, you may not think you’re a fan of electric vehicles; but considering this one was named the 2021 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, it might just be worth a second look. Remember, nobody really liked those noisy, stinky, gas powered “horseless carriages” at first either!
