together. My father was a blue-collar man who worked hard on a daily basis; but even he, along with us three kids, turned to Mom when push came to shove. In addition to her successful career as a special education teacher, she was always there for her family and found a way to solve any issue we encountered. And I see similar qualities in the lady I am married to. While fulfilling a demanding role as a respiratory therapist at a local hospital, my wife has raised two children and been a wonderful partner in life. I am sure you have enjoyed similar experiences. From family members to elementary school teachers and supportive mentors we meet in life, these are people who have an influence in our lives and the community at large. They are the backbone of our families, devoted and caring friends and essential leaders in our community. In this issue we pay them tribute, honoring some of these ladies who are making an

WHEN WE THINK OF MOTHER’S DAY, MANY OF US THINK OF THE TRADITION OF BREAKFAST IN BED. We often cherish memories of bringing our mothers breakfast to start off their big day. Even toast with jam takes on a special twist, when you make the jam yourself. Mother’s Day coincides nicely with the beginning of strawberry season. Freshly picked strawberries are ideal for this recipe; but red, ripe strawberries from the grocery will also make a flavorful treat.

which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The higher the biophenol count, the more effective they are. This is why Cedargren lists biophenol and polyphenol counts on her oils in the store. She also notes that olive oils can be hurt by heat, air, light, and time. “What is commercially available may not be healthy,” she said, encouraging consumers to exercise caution when buying from grocery stores and the like. For example, an olive oil stored in a clear glass container (rather than a colored one that blocks light) and displayed under fluorescent lights could have been damaged and lost its effectiveness. Additionally some olive oils also contain additives that the consumer may not want. This group of all women psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and a therapist treat women with mental health symptoms related to the reproductive life cycle—menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause and menopause, and infertility. “Many women are simply more comfortable discussing issues concerning reproduction and their mental health with another woman,” Dr. Johnson said. Her own personal journey led her into this female-focused specialty. “During my psychiatry residency at the University of Cincinnati, after giving birth to my son, I had the ‘baby blues’ which up to 80% of women experience. I was concerned about developing postpartum depression and I couldn’t find a physician who specializes in that area. I realized that if I,
