WARPED WING TO OPEN NEW LOCATION A popular Dayton-based craft brewery is expanding into Warren County this fall. Warped Wing Brewing Company plans to open a new brewery and taproom in Mason. It will be located at the corner of Rt. 42 and Tylersville Rd. in the former Brazenhead Irish Pub location. The 13,000-square-foot facility will include a large taproom with an outdoor biergarten and small pilot brewing system. It will be Warped Wing’s third location, joining its flagship downtown Dayton brewery and new barrel room and smokery in Springboro.

Crooked Handle Brewing Company will be purchasing a property located at 123 N. Main St. from Piqua Granite and Marble Company. QUESTION 3: WHERE DO YOU HAVE WASTED SPACE? Identify the areas that you feel you are not using to their fullest potential. For the pantry, there are solutions that you can implement, based on how you cook, to make it easier to sort and find items you use the most. Cabinet shelving is a great way to maximize the cabinets that you currently have in the locations closest to your stove and oven. QUESTION 1: WHAT EQUIPMENT OR APPLIANCES DO YOU USE THE MOST? You may have seven to eight skillets in your cabinets, but are you really using them all? “Don’t be afraid to store cooking equipment that you don’t use outside the kitchen,” advised Egbers. “It allows you to maximize the space in the kitchen and pantry for what you use most. Decluttering will save you money on your shopping budget, because it prevents you from buying too much of an item; but it also saves you time from rummaging through the pots, pans, spices, etc., to find what you are looking for in meal preparation.” QUESTION 2: WHAT IS THE BEST LOCATION FOR YOUR ITEMS? Cooking goes more smoothly when all of the items that you need to use together are stored closely to one another—for example, spices. Once you have organized the spices, make sure they are close to the stove and at arm’s length. That prevents you from leaving the stove area and digging into the back of the pantry or closet. If you are baking cookies, it’s a good idea to store your cookie sheets vertically or horizontally under your oven, for ease of use. CityLifestyle.com/SouthDayton

DAYTON’S HISTORIC RESTAURANTS GIVE FLAVOR OF THE PAST AND THE PRESENT
OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, DAYTON HAS EXPLODED WITH NEW DINING OPTIONS. In 2020 alone, 50 new restaurants opened in the region. All of these new options give diners in the area plenty of places to explore, from upscale Mexican fare to comfortable burger places. They attract the imagination—and the spending—of many hungry Daytonians. The drive to try out the latest and greatest new venue and to spread the word about the experience is a strong one. But what about the establishments that have been around for a while? The ones that started in one-room cabins and on the trails of the Buckeye State when we were still new to the country. These places, scattered all over the region, offer their own slice of history, alongside the rest of their menu. They have their own traditions, built over time and enjoyed by the people who dine there—anything from recipes passed down over the years to stunning architectural details unique to when the building was erected.

HISTORY ON YOUR PLATE (CONTINUED)
Let’s take a look at some of the oldest restaurants in the area. They are listed in the order in which they opened, from the oldest operating in the region to some more recent additions to the dining scene. Every one of them has an incredible menu to explore, as well as a story that, in some way, goes back over a century. First we head to Lebanon. Golden Lamb, 27 S. Broadway St., Lebanon, OH 45036 (1803)—Established by Jonas Seaman in the same year that Ohio became a state, it is the oldest hotel in the state. Because reading was a rare skill, he hung an image of a golden lamb out front, from where the name derives. It established an early reputation as THE place to stop in Ohio, as many presidents and other famous people came to stay and dine there. It still serves excellent farm-to-table food and provides incredible service in its dining rooms and the Black Horse Tavern. The Florentine, 21 W. Market St., Germantown, OH 45327 (1814-16)—Built by the founder of Germantown, Philip Gunckel, to welcome travelers, The Florentine began its life as a hotel. Over the years fewer people stayed at the hotel, until it had to close in 1974. It was reopened a few years later and has become a staple of the community. Voted the “Best Hidden Gem” in 2018 Best of Dayton voting, it also claimed third place for the best grilled cheese. If you have not made the drive out there, it might be time to visit! Ye Olde Trail Tavern, 228 Xenia Ave., Yellow Springs, OH 45387 (1827)—Here we find the oldest operating tavern in Ohio. The back of the establishment,

YOU KNOW YOU’RE IN A SPECIAL KIND OF GROCERY STORE WHEN THE SIGN GREETING YOUR ARRIVAL IS IN LATIN. But this is the case with Dorothy Lane Market, a store that manages to be both sophisticated and accessible at the same time. The DLM story began in the early 1940s, when produce wholesaler Calvin Mayne married Vera Jane Pacey, the owner of a small fruit stand. Their son, Norman, would go on to open a fruit stand at the corner of Dorothy Ln. and Far Hills Ave. that would become Dorothy Lane Market. From the beginning, DLM has embodied an ethic of serving the community. During a blizzard in 1950, the store remained open when other establishments closed, so locals could get needed supplies. Norman did the same during the blizzard of 1978, saying, “We couldn’t close, because it was a part of our heritage from 1950 to stay open.” DLM may not regularly face blizzards, but the store remains focused on the needs and interests of the community. The store offers a cooking school, dedicated Certified Specialists of Wine, and one of the most popular arrays of gourmet food in the area. Additionally the store’s signature Killer Brownie® remains the storebought delicacy that you can take to a party and leave in the store’s clamshell container, letting everyone know you brought the real thing. It’s a long way from the little fruit stand where it began, but DLM remains an integral part of the Dayton community.
