MEET SOME OF THE ADORABLE ANIMALS UP FOR ADOPTION AT THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF GREATER DAYTON

South Dayton Lifestyle | November 2020

UNDOUBTEDLY, THIS HAS BEEN A ‘RUFF’ YEAR. But there is still much to be grateful for, especially if you’re one of the many animals being cared for by the Humane Society of Greater Dayton. The shelter, however, remains busier than ever and finding forever homes filled with love is always the goal for these animals in need. Ashley Schmitt, Corporate Relations Coordinator, shares some of the furry friends looking to make a home for the holidays. If interested in adopting, please submit an adoption appli-

camo Camo, a 10-month-old male terrier mix came all the way from a shelter in Kentucky and then to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s shelter in order to find his forever home! He is a happy, sweet, lovable dog that would make a great addition to almost any home. He has plenty of energy to go on a nice walk, run or hike. He has played really nicely with other dogs, but because we don’t know much about his past, we do still recommend he meet any potential “dog siblings” before going home with them. He may need some basic training skills once in a new home, but seems like a people pleaser and is treat motivated so training should be easy. When he first got here, he was immediately super friendly and snuggly, just wanting to jump up and get cuddled! He is a silly, goofy boy with lots of personality but his best qualities are how loving and loyal he is.

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

Llewella Llewella, a 10-year-old female domestic shorthair, is a very pretty senior cat looking for her forever home. She’s a pensive, sweet, sensitive lady who thrives in a calm quiet environment. When Llewella is comfortable she’s loyal and very affectionate. She forms close bonds with people who take the time to get to know her. Her favorite activities include curling up on comfy fluffy beds, lounging on a cat tree while she watches the birds, and hanging out with people who love her. She can take some time to adjust to a new home and needs that right cat-savvy person who can be patient and understanding with her. Adopting a senior cat is a very rewarding experience. Even though Llewella isn’t a young kitten anymore she still has so much more life to live and love to give. If you open your heart to her you’ll gain a soulful best friend.

honcho Honcho, a 2.5-year-old male domestic shorthair, is a big handsome kitty looking for his forever home. Sadly he ended up at the Humane Society of Greater Dayton because his previous owner passed away. Honcho’s name fits him perfectly because he seems like he’s used to being the “head honcho” in a loving home. He’s understandably restless in the shelter environment and wants more than anything to be part of a family again. When he feels comfortable Honcho loves snuggles and head nudges! He’s smart, curious, confident, opinionated, and social. Honcho likes to keep active and do things like watching birds from a window and playing with catnip toys. His personality is the perfect balance of affectionate and independent. He loves to be around his people but is also okay to entertain himself from time to time. While Honcho enjoys quality time with humans, he doesn’t seem to be a fan of being around other animals and may need to be the only furry family member. Honcho is incredibly good looking (and he knows it)! He’s a “manly” cat with a long athletic build, a sleek black coat, and big expressive green eyes. Honcho wants to be your best bud. 14

He can be a little nervous around dogs, but doesn’t seem to mind them too much. Rolo absolutely loves meal time, especially hay fresh out of the bag! This little cutie can’t wait to find a forever family that can give him the love and attention he deserves.

rox a n n’s ch i l i AS THE TEMPERATURE DROPS MY HANKERING FOR CHILI GOES UP! I love this recipe because it’s not only delicious but also Keto Diet friendly. You don’t have to make it in a Crock Pot but I do, setting it to high for 4 hours. Enjoy!

i n g re d ient s + 3 slices bacon, cut into 1/2” strips + 1/4 medium yellow onion, chopped + 2 celery stalks, chopped + 1 green bell pepper, chopped + 1/2 c. sliced baby Bellas + 2 cloves garlic, minced + 2 lb. ground beef + 2 tbsp. chili powder + 2 tsp. ground cumin + 2 tsp. dried oregano + 2 tbsp. smoked paprika + Kosher salt + Freshly ground black pepper + 2 c. low-sodium beef broth + Sour cream, for garnish + Shredded cheddar, for garnish + Sliced green onions, for garnish + Sliced avocado, for garnish

i n st r uc t ion s 1. In a large pot over medium heat, cook bacon. When bacon is crisp, remove from pot with a slotted spoon. Add onion, celery, pepper, and mushrooms to pot and cook until soft, 6 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute more. 2. Push vegetables to one side of the pan and add beef. Cook, stirring occasionally, until no pink remains. Drain fat and return to heat. 3. Add chili powder, cumin, oregano, and paprika and season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine and cook 2 minutes more. Add broth and bring to a simmer. Let cook 10 to 15 more minutes, until most of the broth has evaporated. (Alternatively, put these ingredients into a Crock Pot for 4 hours on High instead of simmer). 4. Ladle into bowls and top with sour cream, reserved bacon, cheese, green onions, and avocado.

I’ve helped manage programs on the following platforms: C-130H/J, Air Force Small Arms; Fighter Bomb Racks, Nuclear weapons, commercial-off-the-shelf technology, Trainer Aircraft, and worked several staff tours. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT BEING A MILITARY VETERAN? The ability to encourage others by persisting as an entrepreneur and to continue to serve my country in a different way. It’s hard to imagine it’s been over a decade. Most people would look at me with ‘military veteran’ as the last descriptor they’d think to use. Whether it’s because I look young or that I’ve served for so long, I take it all with the utmost humility. I love being part of the exclusive tribe of men and women who would defend a fellow American’s life without question. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING THING ABOUT BEING A BUSINESS OWNER? It is rewarding beyond words to see how people’s lives and families have been positively affected by the company. When people tell me about their experience with Mutt’s Sauce, it’s usually not about the flavor. People share a memory that has been created since they bought the sauce. My favorite was an old college roommate who used it instead of tomato paste for a traditional dish when cooking for her boyfriend’s family. She was afraid they’d judge her if her food wasn’t good, but she called raving about the sauce and how impressed they were with the meal she served. She eventually sent me a wedding invitation. It was a great time! To learn about Charlynda Scales and to purchase Mutt’s Sauce visit www.MuttsSauce.com or follow along on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram at @muttssauce. 20

TAKE A COZY, PARISIAN-INSPIRED COFFEE BREAK AT LIBERTY CENTER

ARTICLE LAURA LEAVITT | PHOTOGRAPHY LEN KALTMAN—WEST CHESTER CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY

Fall in Love with Le Macaron WHETHER YOUR FAVORITE DESSERT IS FROZEN, BAKED OR INTRICATELY DECORATED, THAT FIRST BITE IS EXQUISITE. Whatever was on your mind can take a break, making room for a little sweetness. Marina Amaral has been a home dessert chef and world traveler her whole life: after growing up in Brazil, she has lived in Venezuela, Switzerland, Germany, and now, the West Chester/Liberty area. “I learned a lot about people around the world and what kinds of desserts they like,” says Marina Amaral, owner of Le Macaron at Liberty Center. “This helped me a lot! I understand the customers better. I also speak Spanish and understand some French, which helps as well.” When she looked to start a business in 2018, Marina found a perfect blend of her passions for living around the world and for baked treats. The Le Macaron name is part of a small French-owned franchise which allowed her to create a wonderful shop for desserts and craft coffee alongside the main attraction: macarons. “I started the process with this franchise in January, 2018,” says Marina. “In June, I found Liberty Center, with great foot traffic. It’s perfect.” Macarons are a unique delicacy that look simple but require a lot of finesse to create: the simple ingredients of almond flour, egg white and sugar are combined to create the shells of a sandwich, with flavorings and color added in to create the many different types, from Lavender White Chocolate to Lemon Cream. The filling is flavored buttercream, delicate chocolate or jam. “The idea is that it’s an adventure every time you try one,” says Marina. “First, a crunch in the shell, then the moisture inside, then the melt-inyour-mouth sensation. Our logo says ‘a mouthful of heaven,’ for a reason.” At only 80 calories per macaron, these sweets are guilt-free, in addition to being made with gluten-free ingredients. Three flavors are also dairy-free--strawberry key lime, passion mango and raspberry--making a visit to Le Macaron accessible for all dessert lovers Beyond macarons, the shop has French-chef-created gelato, a frozen treat different from the average ice cream. “Ice cream is made using cream, while gelato is created using milk, so it’s not as heavy,” says Marina. “The flavors we have are made by a French chef, so we have slightly different flavors: macaron gelato, an almond based flavor with pieces of macaron, and we have violet flower and pistachio. They aren’t common. It’s a piece of Europe here.” Marina enjoys the aspect of the business that lets her work with a close friend as well as a variety of other workers, who receive training each month to continue to provide a great customer service experience. “It’s great to work with people you really trust,” she says. As a former teacher, she trains her workers about the products but also to help them be successful in life beyond the shop. “I was an educator working with learning disabilities, so this is another way to use what I learned, to teach them how to be the best they can be,” she says. “We are always innovating here, with new training every month on how to be successful in the shop and beyond.” After nearly two years in business, she continues to find new joys within the coffee bar, pastry case and trays of macarons. “I love the new craft iced lattes. It’s iced coffee, plus gelato and syrup. I love them. For macarons, I love the Orange Grand Marnier macaron with the chocolate inside,” says Marina with a twinkle in her eye. “Every day, you want to try something different: eclair, napoleon or something else. I thought I’d be tired of desserts after six months, but there’s always something new!” Macarons have become popular as a compact, beautiful gift, with boxes that house a single macaron for a party favor all the way up to ornate towers of macarons that make excellent party or wedding centerpieces that turn into delightful desserts at the end of the meal. If you’re looking for a high-quality gift, Le Macaron is happy to help-just keep in mind that macarons are best fresh, so pick them up less than three days before they’ll be consumed. Whether you work with Le Macaron to craft great corporate business gifts for the winter holidays or use it as a perfect place to drink a latte and nibble on a pastry, this shop is a great way to transport yourself to France and beyond. “THE IDEA IS THAT IT’S AN ADVENTURE EVERY TIME YOU TRY ONE,” SAYS MARINA. “FIRST, A CRUNCH IN THE SHELL, THEN THE MOISTURE INSIDE, THEN THE MELT-IN-YOUR-MOUTH SENSATION. OUR LOGO SAYS ‘A MOUTHFUL OF HEAVEN,’ FOR A REASON.” 24

G R AT I T U D E AT T I T U D E based in Centerville.

01

We must accept that this holiday season might not (and doesn’t need to be) perfect. If this year has taught us anything, it’s to keep past expectations from affecting our present.

02

During these chaotic times, we can allow ourselves to see the joy and happiness in our everyday life. Notice the smallest gifts, such as a young man helping an elderly man cross the street. Joy is all around us, we just need to be able to notice.

03

Although we may not be able to honor some of our past traditions, now is the perfect time to develop new ones. Getting creative can be part of the fun!

Lastly, maintaining an attitude of gratitude will not only help us get through a very different holiday season, but also keep us grounded as we enter a new year.
