LIFESTYLE LETTER
Health and Wellness
January 2024 PUBLISHER
Teri A Lenhard | teri.lenhard@citylifestyle.com M AN AG I N G E D I TO R
Kylie Brooks | kylie.brooks@citylifestyle.com
For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of City Lifestyle South Charlotte from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. The Holidays were very emotional for me, being the first Thanksgiving and Christmas without my Mom. I know I am not the only person in our community that gets emotional during the Holidays but I have found that a solid support group around you helps tremendously. I have also started exercising again and meditating which has worked with grounding me both emotionally and mentally. Don’t internalize your emotions because you have convinced yourself it’s embarrassing or that people will look at you differently, take care of YOU and know that it is the right action for yourself, not others. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Zinicola. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous year. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. Toned with Tylah DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF YOGA SCULPT WITH TYLAH ALPHONSE
A new year provides the perfect opportunity to try a new workout or return to a previously successful exercise routine. Local Yoga Sculpt instructor Tylah Alphonse offers pop-up classes sure to satisfy the desire for physical activity while having a great time.
Tylah Alphonse HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH YOGA?
I started doing yoga when I lived in Wilmington. Even though I resisted at first, my boss finally convinced me to go to a class. Although it was a slower yoga than I do now, I fell in love with it. When I moved back to Charlotte, my job had a yoga studio right next to it. I tried out all the different classes during the free week and I loved it so much I started going every day after work.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED TEACHING YOGA SCULPT?
I found an instructor I really liked, and I frequently attended her classes. One day she told me she thought I would be an amazing instructor myself, but I decided not to take the instructor course at that time. Later, I started taking a Yoga Sculpt class and that instructor told me the same thing! So, with some encouragement from my friends, I decided to get certified to teach Yoga Sculpt.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT TEACHING?
It's a fun way to get an amazing workout and be refreshed. Yoga also brings a community together. You meet so many friends that share the same qualities and love that you do for Yoga Sculpt, and you build a relationship based on that. We have such a good time together that after one of my Sunday classes, we all went out for lunch together.

HOW IS YOGA SCULPT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TYPES OF YOGA?
Usually, when people think of yoga, they think of slow and meditation, but Yoga Sculpt is very upbeat. We listen to fast music while we do exercises. During classes, we do a flow which is the slower part, but we add weights into it which is great for people who want to build muscle. Then we have a cardio portion where we run. Basically, it's like a mix of HIIT exercises with flow and that's why people like it… because it's the best of both worlds.
WHEN DO YOU OFFER CLASSES AND ARE RESERVATIONS REQUIRED?
I teach classes two times a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays. I teach on Wednesdays at Waxhaw Taphouse. It’s a free class, which everyone loves because it’s almost impossible to find a free Yoga Sculpt class in Charlotte! On Sundays in the winter, I teach in a studio. In the summertime, I teach my Sunday class at Dogwood Park. My Sunday classes are just $10 per person. No reservation needed.
WHAT MAKES YOUR CLASSES UNIQUE?
I try to make a new sequence and switch the songs around each week. A lot of the people who come to my classes love that every single class you come to is going to be different. Even if you come to a Wednesday class and to a Sunday class, I try to switch things up. I get that people don't want to be doing the same moves every week. It makes it more fun when you're doing new moves and sequences to new songs.

“I love teaching because it’s a fun way to get an amazing workout and be refreshed. Yoga also brings a community together. You meet so many friends that share the same qualities and love that you do for Yoga Sculpt.”
WHAT SHOULD PEOPLE BRING TO CLASS?
All they need to bring is a mat. If they don’t have one, I usually have extra mats with me. I provide everything else such as the weights and the band.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR FUTURE CLASSES?
I hope to open a studio of my own one day in the surrounding area. My goal is to have reasonable prices and be accessible for everyone - moms, students, full-time workers! Right now, I’m simply building clientele and making the best classes possible for everyone.
HOW CAN PEOPLE FIND OUT MORE DETAILS?
I post class information and updates on Instagram @tonedwty. People can also email me at tonedwty@ gmail.com for more information. Once someone attends a class, I collect their information and send out reminders. I love seeing new faces so bring your friends and family and come sculpt! I hope to see you all on the mat soon!

Ultimate Luxury Home
A peek into the newly custom-built model home by Peters Custom Homes
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACKSON RANDALL

M UST SE E | HO M E + DESIGN
Husband and wife team, Nicholas and Miriam Peters, opened Peters Custom Homes seven years ago and it has quickly become the largest luxury home builder in North Carolina. “We opened up the company with a few simple principles: full transparency, building a product that the clients want, and treating clients with respect,” says Nicholas. “We want people to know that there are still ethical people in construction. Miriam and I are very much hands-on because it’s our names on the builds. I review all my job sites twice a week and no designs leave her design team without hitting her desk first.”
PCH guides clients through the entire process from land purchasing to architectural design and building, to finishing with final touches of furniture, hardware, and appliances. The team ensures that clients end up with a home built especially for them, in the style they want. “Our designs really depend on the client and what they are looking for aesthetically,” says Miriam. “We have some clients who want a home that is super contemporary and others who want very traditional, so we're able to adapt to whatever style the client desires.” Additionally, being the only builder with its own brick-and-mortar retail
store, Emerald and Oak Design Studio, provides a distinct advantage for their clients. This upcoming year, PCH will have three areas of focus. “First, we will continue to build full custom homes we’ve always done,” explains Nicholas. “The second is one that Miriam wants to introduce, which are pre-designed custom homes in standard packages that she and her team put together. With those, the client can specify the style of house they want and have options to choose from, but if they just want something that’s already put together, that’s available too. Lastly, we will be doing spec homes still designed by Miriam, but built and ready for buyers.” CONTINUED >

A large open kitchen, a scullery, and a coffee bar make entertaining guests easy and convenient. Each of these spaces is beautifully designed to be highly functioning and elegant, including the use of a specialty built-in refrigerator/freezer, custom cabinetry, and built-in marble shelves. Separating the two formal sitting areas, lighted wine racks add to the elegant ambiance and hold any special collections not tucked away in the home’s specially appointed wine cellar. The primary suite incorporates exquisite details to ensure a perfect beginning and end to each day. Customized his-and-her closets provide a massive amount of aesthetically pleasing storage options. The spa-like bathroom takes sharing space in the morning to a new level with his and her toilet rooms and vanities, a zero-entry shower with speakers, and heated tile floors. Upstairs boasts four additional bedrooms, an upstairs laundry, and ample temperature-controlled storage while the lower level of the home serves as the ultimate indoor playground for adults and kids. With a commercial grade two-lane bowling alley, soundproof theatre, and game area, a fun night at home is simply steps, or an elevator ride, away.

Self-care amenities such as a full massage treatment room, gym with cork floor, and indoor hot tub and sauna make winding down from a stressful week easy and convenient. UNIQUE RESOLUTIONS TO ADD TO YOUR LIST

With the New Year also comes new hopes and aspirations for what is possible in the future. We can sometimes get in over our heads when it comes to creating New Year's goals and resolutions. This article will highlight 5 different New Year's goals that you may not have heard of, and that may also be easier to achieve. Let's get into this new year feeling more confident and able to accomplish the goals that we create for ourselves!
1) GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY BY GIVING BACK
One way in which we can feel good about what we do is by giving back to our community. In this New Year, try to volunteer at least once for a program that gives back. There are food pantries, 5k walks for causes, and give-back events that are put on by different religious organizations. Signing up for one new giving-back experience can also create a chain reaction to sign up for more in the future. Giving back with your time might also inspire your neighbors to do the same, creating an even bigger goal than you intended to accomplish!
2) REDUCE/ LIMIT EXPOSURE TO SOCIAL MEDIA
Maybe in this last year you have noticed spending a lot of your time doom scrolling through your social media pages. Social media can be a great place to connect with others or get a new recipe to try out for the New Year. However, social media can also be a place where we find ourselves comparing our lives to the other lives around us. In this New Year, try replacing an hour of social media scrolling with another activity to see how you feel.
3) TRY A NEW RESTAURANT
Treat yourself this new season by trying a restaurant that you have never been to before. Trying new things is not only adventurous but also can help us to learn more about ourselves. Finding a new restaurant to try in the new year is also a fun way to connect with family and friends.
4) SET A NEW BOUNDARY FOR YOURSELF THAT IMPROVES YOUR WELLNESS
In this new year, you may be looking for a new way to reduce your risk of burnout in the work that you do. One way to do that is to notice when you are doing too much and need to make a new limit for yourself. A limit might include taking your work email off of your cell phone so that you are not looking at your phone outside of work hours. Another limit would be scheduling out vacations to make sure that you are taking advantage of all of your PTO for the year. Whichever way you decide, make sure it’s intentional and helpful for your mental health.
5) ADD ANOTHER STREAM OF INCOME
If you feel like you are struggling financially and worry about that coming into the new year, it might be time to find an innovative way to make new income. You can create a hobby in this new year that can help you to bring in more money. A hobby might include creating jewelry, or crocheting items to sell online. Having another form of income doesn't always need to take up hours of your time. Set limits to what you can produce or create for more income.

THE VILLAGE ON Morehead
SOUTH CHARLOTTE’S PREMIER RETIREMENT COMMUNITY CULTIVATING A LIFESTYLE OF LUXURY ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL
24
O UR TOWN | HO ME SERV ICE S
An exciting new luxury retirement community is on the horizon! The Village on Morehead, which is centrally located near Uptown, Myers Park, Eastover, and the surrounding areas, provides members the opportunity for a life-changing move while still residing near locally established community networks. Stepping into The Village on Morehead means embracing a life of curated experiences and convenience. “Luxury is something different for everybody. Perhaps it is having concierge services and being able to book tickets at the theater or having multiple dining venues on-site. It could be access to a weekly housekeeping service or simply not having to fight traffic,” shares Executive Director Leslie Walker. “We provide elegant convenience, where you get to live your life the way you want and ultimately, you get to pick your luxury. While we have very nice tangible things, the luxury, above all else, is the experience that you'll have living at The Village on Morehead.” With nineteen different floor plans to choose from, ranging from one bedroom to three bedrooms to penthouses, members can downsize or keep the larger living space they desire while enjoying a maintenance-free lifestyle. “We've taken a lot of thoughtful time and consideration developing this community and constructing the building,” explains Leslie. “It's well-appointed at every turn, but with purpose.” With team associates on-site twenty-four hours a day, members can also be assured the community is safe and secure. “Luxury is something different for everybody.” A unique aspect of The Village on Morehead is the low-pressure financial commitment. “In the market, there is a heavy presence of communities that require a large, upfront buy-in fee,” says Leslie. “We offer a more flexible program in the form of a twelve-month lease and a one-time membership fee. This provides our members with the flexibility to have control over their own finances to continue investing and having their money work for them.” Joining this community also means connecting with friends, new and old. “We believe the finer things in life should be shared with those closest to you,” she adds. “While we are a new building, our charter club members are becoming a close-knit group of friends. They have already built a rapport amongst each other based on the gatherings we've had over the last several months. So, members will be joining a community that is full of life, friendship, and social opportunities.” With over two hundred monthly engagements and activities to choose from, there is something for everyone to enjoy. “The sole purpose of the activities is to create programs designed around our members’ interests, likes, and hobbies. Options include fitness classes, excursions around town or even a little bit further out of town, and much more,”

says Leslie. “Additionally, there are opportunities to engage in a social lifestyle with the ability to entertain family and friends. For example, we have a terrace that is right off our Cardinal Lounge where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail inside in front of a cozy fireplace, or you can take it outside to enjoy it with friends under the stars.” Additionally, The Village on Morehead serves as an inclusive community for members who may need personal care services. “The benefit to aging in place with us is the member does not have to leave their residence to receive care,” explains Leslie. “Our exclusive partnerships allow the members to receive care discreetly in the comfort of their residence. Whether it's assistive care, physicians who come to the member, or pharmacy services, it's all part of that lifestyle of convenience.” Visit villageonmorehead.com and use the interactive tool to explore the variety of floorplans and amenities available, including keyless apartment entry, a modern fitness center, a heated indoor pool, a juice bar, an on-site salon, and more. To schedule a personalized consultation or to receive information on upcoming informational sessions or gatherings, call 704-831-8000 or email info@villageonmorehead.com.

3-D x-ray imaging, called a CBCT, to see inside the tooth and make a better treatment plan for my patients by using my expertise and technology. I love the challenges and uniqueness of every tooth and case, and I enjoy helping patients get out of pain and back to their normal lives.” Katie realizes that some of her patients may have reservations about coming to see her, but one of her favorite parts of her job is seeing patients leave pain-free and happy. “Almost everybody leaves pleasantly surprised that it was pretty much pain-free, they had an enjoyable experience, and it wasn't scary,” she shares. “We take a lot of time with our patients, walking them through each step and ensuring they are comfortable. We try to make the process as relaxing as possible by having patients pick their music and we talk with them the whole time.” Through Premier Endodontics of Southpark, Katie and her team cultivate a welcoming atmosphere where patient care is a priority. “I’m able to cater the practice to how I would want to be treated and how I want my family to be treated,” says Katie. As the owner, she still does a bit of everything in the practice, including answering the phones. Most importantly, she takes great care of each patient from beginning to end. A resident of South Charlotte, Katie enjoys exploring the many local restaurants with her husband Daniel. She loves to travel and is a former competitive figure skater who volunteers as an official judge with US Figure Skating. For more information, visit endodonticsofsouthpark.com.
