Planning a Perfect Wedding

So you just got engaged! It is a thrilling time for you both, but now comes the planning! Most couples I meet with are overwhelmed with where to start and what details they need to pay attention to. In the past, the first thing couples would usually discuss was a wedding date, but now I am noticing the majority of couples first want to find a venue before choosing a date. You may want to have a certain season or month in mind, but first find the venue you love.

To start your search for the perfect venue, discuss if this will be a “destination” wedding, or someplace centrally located for friends and family, preferably near hotels and an airport. I recommend searching on both The Knot and Wedding Wire (which are both under one umbrella now). You can narrow down your search by area, see photos, read reviews, check pricing and click on the venue website. You can also reach out to the venue with specific questions. The Knot even allows you to set up a website for your wedding.

Once you have narrowed down the venues that you are interested in, schedule a tour and bring a list of questions. Be prepared to have a rough idea of your guest count, the number in your bridal party, what kind of “look” you want, if you want an indoor or outdoor ceremony, etc. I believe that the key to a good venue selection is their flexibility. apply for a permit, which allows them to bring in their own alcoholic beverages for their guests. We also assist in vendor recommendations based on preferences and budget.

OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER: • Does the venue have dressing suites to get ready in? • Is the venue non-traditional couples friendly? • Is there a “rain plan” in place if you have planned an outdoor ceremony? • Is there more than one ceremony area option? • What is the venue capacity? • Is the venue temperature controlled? • What does the venue provide as part of their rental? • Does the venue require that you have a coordinator? • Are there onsite, overnight accommodations? • What are the venue rates, extras and do they offer payment plans and/or offer discounts? • Is there adequate parking? • Does the venue offer a putting green and private fishing dock? (all kidding aside, we do!) Compare your venue offerings and call with any additional questions you may have. After you have found your venue, discuss possible dates and how this ties into your budget. Weekday weddings are becoming more popular. I have hosted Monday and Thursday weddings, which are a significant cost savings when it comes to selecting a venue and your vendors. Sundays are also an increasingly popular day for weddings. Of course, Saturdays are the most requested day, so if you have your heart set on a Saturday wedding, plan ahead, but consider being open minded to other options. After the date and venue are locked in, the next thing I tell my couples is to block out hotel rooms for guests (as needed). The venue should provide you with a list of local hotels and Airbnb’s. Ask hotels if they can offer shuttle transportation to the venue. Now to the (many) other details. There are so many books and online articles which provide planning checklists. We provide our couples with a monthly planning checklist which details the most important items to address. Also, keep in mind that you should hire a minimum of a Day-Of Coordinator. They will become your best friend while helping you navigate your way forward. Rely on their experience and expertise to help you with decisions and selections. As a venue owner, it is important to me that the vendors we recommend include a variety of price point options, provide excellent customer service and that not only my couples but their families and guests have a positive and joyful experience as well. Above all, I tell my couples to keep in mind that this is their day. The choices and decisions about what will take place should not revolve around the expectations of others, including their families. The best and most memorable weddings I have hosted have usually been unconventional and fun. For example, pizza and salad for the dinner, Bundt cake selections for dessert, ice cream trucks, taco food trucks, coffee and hot chocolate “bars”, donuts for wedding favors, S’mores at our fire pit, etc. Make it the best day ever! Dr. Erin Koballa is a North Carolina native who grew up in Wrightsville Beach with her parents and younger sister. Erin earned her undergraduate degree from Duke University where she started on the Varsity Women’s Soccer team for four years while majoring in psychology with a focus on biology and neuroscience. After graduation, she continued her studies, receiving her veterinary degree from NC State University. While pursuing her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, Erin demonstrated her passion for the field by remaining extremely active in campus activities including the Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA) and the student chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

If items are left in a room where they do not belong, make it a part of your lifestyle to never leave the room empty-handed until everything is back where it belongs. Doing so will make cleanup seem gradual and less overwhelming, ensuring you steer clear of the tendency to accumulate clutter. It will also make larger tasks easier for your housekeeper to complete, possibly costing you less money! 2) Keep a daily schedule of simple cleaning tasks that need to be completed. For example, never leave dishes in the sink overnight. Get into a routine of cleaning dishes every day, immediately after each use.

3) Don’t wear shoes in the house. Shoes bring an unwanted assortment of dirt, germs and viruses into your home. This exposes your floors to the possibility of damage and often results in the need for heavy-duty cleaning. Wearing shoes inside your home also increases the risk of illness for you and your family due to exposure to bacteria! 4) Keep the atmosphere in your home as fresh as possible by doing things such as opening windows on clear days to welcome crisp natural breezes indoors. Using a diffuser with the essential oil or blend of oils of your choice can purify the air and may provide additional health benefits for you and your family. Fragrant candles and air wicks are also popular choices for enhancing the smell and ambiance of a room or your entire home. 5) Accidents will happen! Clean up spills and stains right away. Messes are generally much easier to clean when dealt with promptly, waiting until the following day or longer usually means expending loads more time and energy removing stains. Mud tracked onto your floors is best dealt with after it dries and becomes crumbly. 6) When doing your own housecleaning in between housekeeper visits, remember it’s best to begin cleaning each room by removing any cobwebs or dust from the ceiling and working your way down, dusting light fixtures, window frames, mirrors and wall hangings as you go. Be sure to dust and sweep over furnishings and floors so that any dirt shaken loose from higher up does not end up settling on items below as you continue to clean. 7) Remember to think dry first, then wet: When cleaning a room, begin with cleaning tasks that involve dry methods such as dusting, sweeping and vacuuming, and then if needed, move to wet methods such as glass and all-purpose cleaners as well as mopping. 8) It’s always best to start with the least harmful method of cleaning available. Try the gentlest options first, and then, if necessary, move on to a more aggressive alternative. If after attempting to resolve a cleaning issue using all products you know to be safe without success, you must decide whether it’s worth persisting in the effort. You don’t want to risk damaging a surface by rubbing it with anything harmful. Seek advice from your housekeeper, if necessary, since as a cleaning professional, they have likely seen or dealt with the same situation or something similar in the past. 9) Let time do the job for you! This is a valuable little tip that can often save you time and make cleaning easier and quicker. When cleaning a room, spray your cleaning product, then busy yourself with another task while the cleaner does its work. Similarly, when cleaning the kitchen, spray the cleaner on worktops and appliances, then go off to work on something else, which will give the cleanser time to soak into the surface meaning less time scrubbing for you! 10) Have all your supplies with you when you start your housecleaning tasks. This will prevent you from making several trips around the house looking for the right products and tools.
