7 HACKS FOR FUN, STRESS-FREE ROAD TRAVEL

The road trip vacation your family has been anxiously anticipating is almost here. The question is, are you prepared for a long ride, sibling squabbles, food and drink spills, umpteen rest stops, and being asked a hundred times or more, ‘are we there yet?’ With a little pre-planning, you can drastically reduce the discomfort, the stress, the hassles and turn your time on the road into a fun, family experience for all. Now that you’ve settled on the vehicle you’ll be riding in, here are other items for your traveling with kids checklist: 1. RESTROOM BREAKS. Immediately before heading out, have everyone go to the bathroom, whether they need to or not. Just before and while on the road, limit beverages, particularly caffeinated ones, to reduce the frequency of restroom stops. When you do have to stop for something, have everyone use the restroom again, and don’t accept anyone’s claim, “I don’t need to go.” 2. REDUCE STOPS. Strategize where you choose to stop so you can cover all the bases at once. Fuel up, grab food and beverages, use the restroom, and go for a walk or play a game of tag so everyone can stretch and exercise. 3. DRIVE THROUGH THE NIGHT. Kids typically sleep through the night on the road in a comfortable vehicle like a Volvo SUV. So it’ll seem like you’ve reached your destination in the blinkof-an-eye, which will reduce your overall stress. Parents can switch off driving while the other one sleeps. 4. SNACKS AND DRINKS. Bring along a cooler and a variety of drinks and snacks to reduce pit stops. Breaking up the time with small meals and snacks will also help keep kids pacified. When packing snacks, include some nutritious ones like carrot sticks and apples. Also, keep in mind the messiness of particular types of foods. To reduce messes, avoid foods that melt, smear, and squish, such as chocolate, cupcakes, and yogurt. CONTINUED >

5. PLAN FUN OR SCENIC STOPS. Do some advance research to find a fun stop along the way, and build it into your vacation. Look for a state or national park, national monument, mountains, beach, kiddie fun-land, river walk, or water park.

6. ACTIVITIES WHILE RIDING. Before your trip, visit the library to pick out books, audiobooks, and music CDs. Bring streaming devices and portable electronics too. But don’t let the kids have the items until you’re on the road. That way, the kids will have fresh entertainment. Also, take along some car games, and print a list of games that don’t require pieces or power for playing. Some ideas to get you started include the license plate game. Have everyone write down the states of the license plates as they spot them. The person with the most states wins. Even try the “Would you rather?” game. Take

7. SCREEN TIME. While limiting kids’ daily screen time is a best practice, consider making an exception for your road trip. Depending on the length of your drive, it can be a challenge to keep kids amused for the duration despite all the other entertainment you bring along. Limit their screen time on the road by allowing them 30-minute cycles of screen time broken up by other activities.

FIRST TEE - GREATER CHARLOTTE BUILDS GAME CHANGERS BY EMPOWERING KIDS THROUGH THE GAME OF GOLF. Since 2003, First Tee - Greater Charlotte has been teaching children life skills through golf. The First Tee program is based on the First Tee Nine Core Values that are taught through the character education program: responsibility, respect, honesty, judgment, courtesy, integrity, confidence, perseverance and sportsmanship. The program serves more than 1,500 participants at seven different facilities in the Greater Charlotte area and partners with more than 203 local elementary schools to bring the game and its inherent core values to more than 120,000 students during the school year. First Tee enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. By seamlessly integrating the game of golf with life skills curriculum, learning is created. The mission of First Tee is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. Missions of the organization are supported through three tiers: After-School/Summer Programming, School Programs to teach the First Tee 9 core values, the First Tee 9 healthy habits and the game of golf in elementary physical education classes; and Community Programs taking the First Tee curriculum to other youth-serving facilities. The First Tee Learning Center is adjacent to the Dr. Charles L. Sifford Golf Course at Revolution Park. First Tee Greater Charlotte through its partnership with Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation opened its Learning Center in April 2009 and expanded the

building with renovations in 2016. The facility includes newly developed practice areas including one practice putting green, two short game practice greens, a full driving range, as well as an indoor simulator.

When designing and decorating kids’ rooms, there are smart plays you can make that will really pay off for everyone down the line.

“Be playful, let your hair down and have some fun; it’s a kid’s room after all. The kid years don’t last forever; if they want the Batman sheets, get the Batman sheets.”

KEEP A NEUTRAL BASE. Depending on the age of the child, (s)he may or may not have opinions on color and style in the room. One way to let an older child express themselves without, let’s say, painting the walls fuchsia (which I actually just did in my daughter’s room) is to stay neutral with paint - choose an eggshell finish over flat for easier cleanup - and flooring choices, then let them choose colorful accents, like fun pillows, curtains, etc. – things that can easily be swapped out later when tastes change.

PLAN FOR SPILLS. Let’s be real; where kids are, messes will happen, so why not plan for them ahead of time. For flooring, indoor-outdoor rugs are a wonderful choice, or if you want a quality piece, choose wool as it will outlast most other rugs, and is still cleanable. Layering rugs is fun and can be another way for a child to have a say in the design; choose a neutral option like a sisal or a neutral wool rug for the large area rug, then let them choose a smaller fun printed rug to layer on top. Again, as the child ages and tastes change, (or spills happen) you may only need to swap out the top rug.

If there is an area where you want to use a wallcovering instead of paint, did you know that you can have any wallpaper treated to make it wipeable? Additionally, peel and stick wallpaper is becoming more and more popular, is widely available, and is the epitome of low commitment. When you’re ready to make a change, just pull down the strips and start from scratch. Regardless of the age of the child, choosing stain-resistant fabrics is almost always a good decision in a child’s room. Highperformance outdoor fabrics have come such a long way; they have a great feel, are durable, come in so many options, and clean up with just soap and lukewarm water. And, don’t be afraid of patterns! Patterns hide stains better than solids. Vinyl and faux leather upholstery options are also great choices since they wipe clean.

KEEP SAFETY IN MIND. For younger kids, you’ll want to go with acrylic over glass, and furniture with rounded edges instead of sharp corners. STAY FLEXIBLE. Frames, where kids can easily swap out their artwork, is a nice choice for walls. Ditto for framed cork boards or strings with mini clothes pins.

DOUBLE DUTY FURNITURE?

TREAT IT LIKE A RENTAL? When I design homes that will be rented out on VRBO or AirBNB, there are a couple of tricks of the trade that I think also apply when I design kids’ rooms. Taking beds all the way to the floor and using wallmounted shelves instead of nightstands makes vacuuming a breeze and lowers the number of areas where dust bunnies can accumulate. Lastly, be playful, let your hair down and have some fun; it’s a kid’s room after all. The kid years don’t last forever; if they want the Batman sheets, get the Batman sheets.

You just add in all of the stuffies, zip it up, and it becomes a kid’s comfy lounge chair! Genius! Storage ottomans are also a great double-duty furniture piece.

Every year thousands of dogs are turned over to animal shelters because they were given as a gift without first consulting the gift recipient – or families discover they brought home a biter, barker, digger, or jumper. So before selecting your dog, do your homework.

VARIETY OF DOGS, VARIETY OF NUISANCES A barking dog helps protect against intruders. But excessive barking can become a problem. Some breeds known for their barking include the Alaskan Malamute, American Water Spaniel, Bassett Hound, Finnish Spitz, Fox and other Terriers, Great Pyrenees, and Miniature Schnauzer. A playful, energetic puppy can make a great playmate for your child. Certain breeds tend to maintain that high energy level well into their adult size bodies. Such breeds include Airedale Terriers, Boxer, Brittany, Cocker Spaniel, Dalmatian, Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, Jack Russell Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Pointer, and Schnauzer.

Dogs dig for many reasons—to bury a bone, to escape from a fenced yard, to keep cool, or out of boredom. The following breeds tend to be diggers: Fox Terriers, Norwich Terrier, and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. Dogs can be aggressive for a variety of reasons. Poor breeding, physical abuse, and even disease can cause aggression in a dog. Certain dominant breeds can also tend toward aggressiveness if not handled by a firm and skilled handler. Choose these dogs with caution and the understanding they require strong leadership: Akita, American Pit Bull Terrier, Bulldog, Bullmastiff, Chow Chow, Doberman Pinscher, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Schnauzer, Shih Tzu, Siberian Husky, and Weimaraner. Grooming is another consideration. In addition to keeping claws trimmed and an occasional bath, some dogs require lengthy daily brushing to remove tangles or trapped fur in double coats. High maintenance breeds include the American Eskimo, Cocker Spaniel, Collie, Great Pyrenees, Lhasa Apso, Old English Sheepdog, Poodle, Schnauzer, and Terriers.

TRAITS TO LOOK FOR IN A FAMILY DOG Many unforeseen problems are avoidable by finding a dog that’ll be easy for your child to handle so your child can assist in training. Easy trainers include American Water Spaniel, Australian Shepherd, Bichon Frise, Cocker Spaniel, Irish Setter, Italian Greyhound, Maltese, and Shetland Sheepdog. Calm, gentle breeds are essential for families with small children. Keep in mind size alone doesn’t dictate these traits. Gentle breeds you might consider are Bassett Hound, Beagle, Bearded Collie, Chinese Crested, Great Dane, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundland, and Mastiff. Playful and energetic puppies work well for older children who won’t feel threatened by the dog’s full-grown size. Consider an American Eskimo, Bloodhound, Brittany, Dalmatian, Golden Retriever, Irish Wolfhound, Labrador Retriever, Pointer, Poodle, Saint Bernard, or Schnauzer.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 800,000 people, mostly children, are bitten annually severely enough to require medical attention. Infants and small children shouldn’t be left alone with a dog. Little kids sometimes get too close to a dog while it’s eating or chewing a bone or startle a dog while it’s sleeping. Sometimes, small children hang on dogs, pull their tails, or threaten a dog’s safety. This can lead to injury to either the dog or your child. Apartment living is another consideration. High energy and medium to large breeds generally need large areas to romp. Without it, your apartment could become a round-the-clock racetrack. Planning regular walks for these dogs may not be sufficient. You’ll tire long before your dog. The costs of pet ownership should also be weighed out. First, there are obvious costs, such as pet food and annual vaccinations. Other expenses include licensing, monthly heartworm pills, chew toys, damaged belongings, fencing, training, unexpected veterinary expense, grooming, kenneling, and more. If your family has members with bad allergies or asthma, check with your doctor before bringing any furred, feathered, or finned pet into your home. Finally, keep in mind no matter how sincere your child’s intent to care for his new pet, it’s a big responsibility. Ultimately, parents take the brunt of the work. Also, the holiday season may not be the best time of year to bring home a new dog. Families are generally too busy during the holidays to give a new pet the attention it needs. Visit any local farmers’ market during the Summer and you are sure to see a huge display of fresh, juicy peaches. This recipe for Grilled Peaches is perfect for those warm summer evening sugar cravings. Choose peaches that are ripe, but not too soft. A bit of firmness will help the peaches stand up to the hot grill.

GRILLED PEACHES WITH APRICOT JAM AND ICE CREAM ingredients: • • • • • • • • • • •

4 to 5 peaches, halved 5 tablespoons butter, salted 2 tablespoons apricot jam 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 teaspoons cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg ¼ teaspoon ground allspice 1 pint vanilla bean ice cream ½ cup granola, crushed nonstick spray fresh mint or basil, for garnish

directions: 1. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Allow the butter to turn a medium-brown color. As soon as you smell a nutty aroma, remove from heat. Pour into a bowl. Whisk in the apricot jam, vanilla, nutmeg, and allspice. 2. Fire up the grill, or grill pan. Clean out just a bit of the inner flesh of the pitted peach halves. Spray the grill grate with non-stick spray. Place the peaches skin-side down and grill for about two to three minutes. Flip and allow the flesh side to gather perfect grill marks. Two minutes, at best. 3. Place the peaches on a serving platter, flesh side up. Spoon on a bit of the apricot brown butter mixture. Top each with a spoonful of ice cream. Sprinkle with crushed granola. Garnish with fresh basil or mint leaves. Drizzle the entire platter with any remaining butter mixture. ENJOY!
