Okay gentlemen, you’ve waited patiently for your turn. Last month, we brought you our ladies’ issue – it is ladies first always – and this month, we present our ‘Summer for the Gents’ issue. You can check out the gentlemen in my family on our City Scene page 11. I love the summer because it has so many things to offer. Baseball is always great, whether it’s watching the Knights play or even better yet, watching your little ones show off their developing skills and the fun they have on the field. Of course, there’s Father’s Day on June 19th, but there are so many more reasons why it’s great to be a guy this month. With the summer season underway, the long, sunny days can be filled with backyard cookouts, fishing excursions and traveling domestically and abroad. Personally, I will be enjoying a European river cruise totally planned by our friends at Mann Travels, but if you want to stay closer to home, then read about the Great Smokies and consider a family trip there this summer or maybe you’ll just want to enjoy a staycation with your family in a new home. I’ve been blessed with four wonderful children ranging in age from 5 to 24 years old. With that big of a spread, I will have spent over 40 years raising my children into adulthood. Fortunately, I love being called “Dad”. I’ve also been blessed with a career as a dentist that I am equally passionate about. Like so many parents today with the extended families being spread across great distances, I’ve learned to be a juggler between “Dad” and “Dr. Joubert”. We all endeavor to perform our best in both roles but sometimes feel divided between the two. I was raised with the notion that success is closely linked to achievements in a competitive environment. That has worked for me within my career. I take great pride in learning and implementing the latest and greatest materials and procedures in my office determined to give my patients the best quality care possible. Likewise, as a new parent, I wanted to be “the best dad ever”. I soon found out my version of success did not work well for me as a father. I mistakenly started out thinking I would be able to shape my children’s development and interests. Having one son adopted from Cambodia gave me three children each about one year apart. I quickly realized that they each were predestined to grow and develop as individuals, and my job was not to shape them but to provide them with an environment to support their growth and development.

When I see my children interacting and expressing themselves on Father’s Day, I am grateful for the diversity created by their growth and development. As defined at Study.com, the terms growth and development are inseparable but different concepts. Growth refers to the increase in height, weight and body size of a person. In biology, growth is the increase in the size of an organ or cell. On the other hand, development refers to the growth process where a person can develop physically, mentally, socially, emotionally, morally, etc. Development depends upon both heredity and environment. So on Father’s Day, what is most celebrated by me is not me being the “Best Dad Ever”, although I do save the Father’s Day mugs and school made cards. No, what I celebrate is discovering and rediscovering my children’s lifelong personal development that leads to diversity, acceptance and tolerance. When I see my young adult children accepting each other for who they are becoming, sharing views and passions and offering each other support, to me that’s success. SUMMER GRILLED SANDWICHES FOR THE GUYS

For most of us, grilling season begins once the weather warms up and makes cooking outdoors a pleasurable experience. This is the moment we tend to start craving something cooked over an open flame. Grilling is a perfect way to enjoy a quick and easy weeknight dinner. This recipe for Grilled Cheesesteak Sandwiches from Charlotte Fashion Plate is sure to satisfy your entire family. After a visit to your local farmers market to gather up fresh produce, and to your local butcher for that incredible cut of steak, it’s time to fire up the grill! This recipe will make two generous sandwiches!

GRILLED CHEESESTEAK SANDWICHES ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •

1 lb. thinly sliced ribeye steak 3 bell peppers, sliced thin (red, yellow, green) 1 yellow onion, sliced thin 2 sausage rolls 2 tablespoons butter or mayo 6 slices provolone cheese 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided 2 teaspoons coarse salt, divided 2 teaspoons black pepper, divided 1 teaspoon garlic powder

directions: Fire up the grill. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a large cast iron pan or grilling pan. If you have a flat top, use that! Add in the sliced bell peppers and onions. Season with a teaspoon each of coarse salt and black pepper. Thinly slice the ribeye. TIP: Place the steak into the freezer before you start for about 15 minutes. This will make the steak easier to slice. Coat the steak in the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Season with the remaining salt, black pepper and garlic powder. Once the vegetables are softened and slightly browned, move to the side of the pan and add the steak. The steak will need only a few minutes to cook. As the steak is cooking, smear the inside of the rolls with mayo or butter. Place face down on the grill to toast. After the steak is cooked, combine with the peppers and onions. Divide into two equal parts. Top each with provolone cheese. Allow the cheese to melt. Using a spatula, transfer the cheesesteak onto the toasty buns. ENJOY!
