B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
The Charlotte Youth Ballet (CYB) was created by Gay Porter in 1981 with the goal of bringing young dancers from any studio in the Charlotte area together to experience an opportunity to perform alongside professional dancers in full-length productions. In keeping with this mission, CYB also offers its young dancers tremendously inspirational and enriching opportunities each year to introduce classical ballet to diverse audiences. This goal has been carried out through several programs primarily divided into categories. · The Nutcracker – This performance was held during the first weekend of December 2021 at CPCC Halton Theatre. For this classic favorite production, professional dancers collaborated with and mentored student dancers in various roles; all supporting cast members were developed from Charlotte area student dancers aged 8-25. Each season the choreography is updated and adapted by Artistic Director Gay Porter to showcase the individual talents of these cast members, adding an innovative and unique freshness to CYB production. Currently, the professional dancers have been contracted from Mauro Ballet, Puerto Rico, which enhances the experience for CYB student dancers by offering cross-cultural exposure as well. · A Storybook Classic – This year’s second major production will be an annual ballet performance pulled from the classic and well-loved storybook, Snow White. It will be presented to both student and public audiences at CPCC Halton Theatre, March 11 - 13, 2022. CYB believes it is a familiar story that can help captivate the attention and renders a presentation that without words, is understandable, enjoyable and stirs emotion. · Outreach – At Merry Oaks Elementary School, in our Lasting Impression program, we provide an instructor to teach classical ballet to a small group of students. · Ticket Donations – The Board is committed to continuing its tradition of ticket donations for underserved members of our community. In addition, each year CYB offers tickets to performances at reduced prices to Charlotte area senior citizens. · Girl Scouts – Each year Girl Scouts partner with CYB to attend performances at reduced ticket rates and participate in activities, designed with our student dancers, to cultivate an appreciation for performing arts. They receive achievement badges provided by the CYB. · Lasting Impressions - This community outreach program brings classical ballet classes directly to underserved students in Title 1 schools. These students, who otherwise would have limited to no access to ballet classes, receive free weekly ballet classes, shoes, tights, leotards and costumes as well as all equipment necessary for instruction. In direct alliance with our mission to bring the art of dance to diverse audiences, CYB’s target audience is two-fold. First, free and reduced tickets are offered to school students, disadvantaged families and elderly groups in an effort to reach financially challenged segments in our community. Second, through media exposure that highlights our unique combination of youth and professional performers, we seek to attract newcomers of all ages to experience this dynamic art form. Through the ethnic diversity of our student youth performers and our professional guest artists, it is hopeful that cultural barriers may be lessened among their peers as well as in the community at large. Charlotte Youth Ballet is funded through grants, corporate sponsors and patrons. For more information, visit charlotteyouthballet.org. Carmel Christian School, a South Charlotte school, has an extensive Arts program for all ages including theater, band, choir, Ignite Worship Bands for middle school and high school students, dance and elementary music. Last year, high school students performed Robin Hood. In 2022 they will perform 'Singin in the Rain'. Tickets will be on sale in February for the March 4 and 5 event. The musical, Annie Jr., was performed by middle school students on November 5 and 6, 2021, produced by Christina McCorkle, directed by and with the musical direction of Stefanie Spruill, and choreography by Brandy Caton. Fifth grade students are excited about performing the musical, 'Magic Tree House: Pirates Past Noon Kids' on April 1 and 2, 2022. Since opening its doors in 1978, Providence Gallery has established an unparalleled reputation for offering a stellar combination of custom framing and an extensive selection of distinctive fine art. The gallery represents more than 20 painters who have earned acclaim for their work on a regional, national and international level. Providence Gallery is always expanding its inventory of artwork to include subject matter in every genre and medium to continue to offer an evolving selection of artwork for residential and corporate design. Owner Deborah Campbell Bass and Gallery Manager Rod Wimer have more than 70 years of experience in framing and design between them, allowing them to offer custom framing options perfect for family photos and works of art as well as cherished mementos and collectibles. Rod Wimer, Artist Rod Wimer is a talented and diverse fine artist who enjoys the journey of creating abstract and contemporary figurative paintings with multiple mediums and the infusion of collaged elements. Working on substrates of wood panel, canvas and paper, he builds multi-layered works with paint, graphite, colored pencil and oil sticks. Much of his work includes the use of handmade papers, wood, dirt, fabrics and found objects. Born in 1960, Rod was adopted by missionary parents, and most of his formative years were spent in the Central African Republic. Largely ignored by the rest of the world, and ruled by then dictator Jean Bedel Bokassa, this poverty-stricken country in the center of the African continent was where Rod first discovered his love of creative expression. The African culture, with its unique design aesthetic, exotic wildlife and visionary landscapes are all continuing influences in this artist’s ongoing exploration of his work. After Africa, Rod spent several years in Hawaii. Lush island landscapes, tropical flowers and vast horizons of azure sea and sky further developed his passion for texture and color. Rod’s art is found in both private and corporate collections across the continental United States, as well as Hawaii, Canada, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands. GET TO KNOW HEART DISEASE ARTICLE BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it accounts for 20% of female deaths. Coronary artery disease, also commonly known as coronary heart disease or atherosclerosis, is the most common type of heart disease. More than 6% of women over the age of 19 are afflicted by it, which can lead to a heart attack or heart failure. Heart conditions, for which women are at higher risk than men, include cardiac syndrome X, angina (chest pain), and broken heart syndrome (stress-induced cardiomyopathy). Women can also be affected by several other heart conditions. These include heart failure, heart valve disease, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and atrial fibrillation (Afib). Prevention Several risk factors for heart disease cannot be modified. Family history, race, gender, menopause, and age all play a role in heart disease. Still, many risk factors can be managed, according to Cleveland Clinic. To reduce your risk for heart disease: • quit smoking • lower your total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides • increase your HDL (good) cholesterol • reduce your blood pressure if it is high • keep diabetes under control • maintain a healthy body weight • eat heart-healthy foods • exercise regularly • reduce your stress Also, an alcoholic drink per day may offer some benefit to your heart by increasing your HDL cholesterol. But medical experts caution against more than one drink per day. Studies have found high alcohol consumption can damage the heart. Although some studies suggest alcohol may be
22

beneficial in moderation, others have shown the opposite. Cleveland Clinic recommends if you don't already drink alcohol, do not begin. Heart attack signs Women can experience all the same symptoms as men. Often, however, women experience heart attacks differently. Most notably, women don't always experience crushing chest pain. Instead, they may feel tightness or pressure in their chest. As a result, symptoms can go unnoticed or are easily brushed off. If the pain or discomfort goes away and then comes back or lasts for more than a few minutes, it could be a symptom. Other symptoms include: • shortness of breath • pain, discomfort, weakness, or heaviness in either arm • discomfort in the neck, jaw, upper back, shoulders, or stomach • indigestion, nausea, or vomiting • cold sweats • fatigue • sleep disturbance • dizziness or lightheadedness What to do if you're having a heart attack Call 911 immediately and have them dispatch emergency medical services (EMS). This is usually faster than having someone drive you to the hospital. Also, if you're in a public place, such as work or a store, a defibrillator may be available. Ask whoever you come into contact with first to check. Defibrillators come with easy instructions and could save your life. Finally, take an aspirin, says Anthony Komaroff, MD, editor-in-chief of "Harvard Health Letter." He recommends a standard dose of 325 mg that isn't coated. "Chew it, and then swallow it with a glass of water," says Komaroff, to quickly get it into your system. This can slow blood clotting and limit damage to your heart.

C HE F ’S SE LE CT ION | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
ARTICLE BY ANN BREWER AND CAROL LONG
Zinicola, an upscale Italian restaurant in Ballantyne Village, is truly a place to warm the heart during Valentine’s month or anytime. Richard Cranmer, Zinicola’s lead chef and owner, began his training while growing up and watching his mother cook every day. His restaurant’s name, Zinicola, was created from his mother’s maiden name. When his family spent summers in Italy visiting his grandmother, he watched her make family meals from scratch and his family brought her recipes back to America with them. His interpretation of Italian cuisine comes from his love and passion for Italy, its food and his family. The pastas, sauces and desserts are made in house by hand just like his ‘nonna’ did. Zinicola has the food you’d expect to find in Italy if you visited there yourself. You can even feel the Italian vibes while watching the chefs lovingly cook the food and work in the kitchen. It’s food that feeds the soul! While spending years in culinary training in high-end kitchens, Chef Cranmer honed his skills, but the essence of his food remains the same. It is an expression of Love. Zinicola serves lunch, dinner and grab to go meals and has an extensive cocktail and wine list to please any palette. Richard also creates unique daily specials from seasonally market fresh items and pure ingredients. In addition to having great food, the decor and inviting atmosphere at Zinicola confirms that you’re in the right place to engage in conversation with your date. There is an inspirational feeling which encourages you to create unforgettable memories. The ambience gives you a feeling of warmth, comfort and casual elegance, while the staff provides exceptional service. They are friendly, welcoming and treat you like family.

Creating A Beautiful, Luxurious Bedroom ARTICLE BY LISA PREYOR WITH ANN BREWER In this month of Love, it may be time to evaluate your bedroom. Renew your relationship with the space where most spend about one third of their time sleeping. Your bedroom is your retreat from the world and from the rest of the house. It's where you can relax, unwind, sleep and enjoy some romantic time too, if you choose. But before we dig too deep into all that happens there, let's evaluate the basics in a room that should mean the most to you. Creating luxury starts out with a plan. 1) How's the space in the room? Do you have too much furniture to move around in the room? Are your bed and other furniture pieces the right size for the room? Spend some time thinking about how well your bed fits, since it's the most important piece in the room. You should be able to walk around
Lisa Preyor

the sides and feel the freedom of space around it. Don't let the furniture block the flow in the room and don't be afraid to remove a piece of furniture or two. Do you really need a dresser and a chest? Your bed, side tables and seating are more important. 2) The bed is by far the most significant piece in the room, so spend more money on where you sleep, as opposed to buying finer accessories. Select a bed and mattress that is comfortable, supportive, beautiful and aesthetically appealing. There has never been a more fun time to shop for a bed. The choices are endless. Would you like a headboard, four posters, an adjustable frame or one with memory? The bed is also the focal point in the room and will display your fine linens and coverings to create your work of art. When the bed
is completely dressed it will reinforce the message you're sending about the room's theme or mood. 3) Linens and pillows can make a bed pop! These are the secret ingredients for making a statement. They can give a plush, elegant look and feel to the bed making it luxurious. Fine fibers and fabrics will make the bed sleep better too. Pillows, pillows and more pillows are another tip for creating a look of luxury by adding depth and texture. They can be functional for better sleep and provide comfort too. 4) Every bedroom should have a theme. What kind of mood do you want to create? Your mood will lead you to the right colors and accent pieces. Is it earthy, tropical, quiet, elegant, stimulating? What would you like it to be? Have a plan for the aesthetics and stick to it. CONTINUED >
FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SOU TH C HA R LOT T E
29
5) Once you're clear on the mood, select the paint or wallpaper that will deliver it. Paint your walls and ceilings in solid colors that you find relaxing, or brighter, bold colors if you want more energy. Luxury happens when walls and ceilings are painted the same color, but never use hospital white. 6) Lighting can make the room. Even though the windows should be covered, consider whether you would prefer bright natural lighting as an option. Do you want to create a dramatic effect with sconces, chandeliers, pendants, bedside lamps, overhead or recessed lighting?
30
O PE N H OU SE | HOM E + DE S I GN
Bright lights, with an option for softer lighting, are generally the best decision. Lighting can change the mood in the entire room quickly just by modifying the degree of brightness. 7) Accessories are your finishing touches to give your room a distinctive style. They should fit naturally into your space and effortlessly communicate your theme by contributing to the mood you identified when you started your creation. Not only should they exude luxury, but make sure they represent your personal taste. Be yourself and like everything else, let your bedroom translate your style.
