We are entering the holiday season, that most wonderful time of the year when we look forward to coming together as a family. It is the time of year when wearing sweaters and yoga pants daily is socially acceptable. It is the time of year when your coworkers, neighbors, and friends begin to dig into their recipe boxes and cookbooks to find that one favorite holiday dessert passed down from their great ancestors. Cookies, cakes, pies, breads, and soups, just to name a few. I like to fill my home with the aroma of something savory cooking in my crockpot. It is the season of pumpkin patches, pumpkin spices, and gathering around the firepit for s’mores. Many families begin to make plans to gather for food, football, and Thanksgiving dinner. It is the season of family.

Like any other life event, planning ahead helps ease tension and stress for everyone. When I host the Thanksgiving meal, I start planning at least two months in advance. It is the same with planning for life changes. Even the thought of having to adjust one’s life, location, or lifestyle can bring about anxiety, especially if you are alone. In this season of gratitude and thankfulness, what better way to navigate these often-tough conversations than to weave them into mealtime. THE APPETIZER: The appetizer is the first taste of what’s to come. With family gatherings comes family discussions. Use the appetizer to test the waters of the conversation. Use this time to simply connect with one another. This is the time to be grateful, and to honor those who are unable to join you. Be present.

SOUP & SALAD: The next course brings attention to the details. Here is where you may note how much you appreciate the time you have with extended family and the opportunity to celebrate life’s major events. Discussions of milestones and celebrations that happened over the past year. THE MAIN COURSE: As you enjoy good food and conversation, you may note how much you wish visiting family members were closer so you could gather more often. Here is where the conversation shifts from light to intimate. This conversation lends itself to highlighting the many positive reasons for a move and transition to happen. As you pass the buttery mashed potatoes, you begin to ask questions. What if the family was closer? What if our parents lived closer to their children CONTINUED >

An After Thanksgiving Day Meal with Family and Friends

Our beautiful friend, Barbara McKay, always presents the best foods for any occasion. For this month, she chose the recipe shown here because while growing up, she and her family always enjoyed a warm, simply pleasurable meal on the day after Thanksgiving. After having a fabulous feast on Thanksgiving Day, with turkey and all the trimmings, everyone just wanted to go easy on the food the following day. I’m sure you know the feeling too. You feel so heavy and stuffed so you’re ready for much less on Friday. Barbara’s White Bean and Spinach Soup is a light, nutritious and delicious treat that is just right for the next day. It’s one of her favorites that she has continued to share with her family and friends on the day after Thanksgiving every year. WHITE BEAN AND SPINACH SOUP Serves 6, Prep 30 minutes (after soaking beans overnight) Cooking Time: 1 hour

INGREDIENTS: • 1 cup dried Great Northern Beans • 3 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 3/4 cup white or yellow onions, chopped • 1/2 cup carrots, sliced • 1 1/2 cups chopped fresh baby spinach • 5 cups chicken broth • 1 teaspoon garlic, chopped • 1 bay leaf • Salt and pepper to taste • 3 Tablespoons parsley, chopped • Grated Parmesan cheese for garnish

DIRECTIONS: Place the beans in a large container and generously cover with water. Soak overnight. Drain the beans, reserving up 2 cups of liquid. In a large Dutch oven, heat the oil. Saute' the onions and carrots in the oil until tender. Add the spinach and cook, stirring until wilted. Add the chicken broth, bean water, beans, garlic and bay leaf. Partially cover and simmer for 1 hour. Remove the bay leaf. Puree half the soup in a blender or food processor. Return to the pot of remaining soup and mix well. Season with salt and pepper. NAPA VALLEY During a two-week west coast visit in September, my wife and I visited family who live in Vallejo, California, about ten minutes from the town of Napa. This trip allowed us to spend a day and a half in Napa Valley. Historically, Napa Valley is known as America’s premier wine-growing region. Because of where it is situated geographically, Napa Valley mimics the climate and feel of the Mediterranean. The diurnal temperature shifts of daytime highs and nighttime lows allow grapes to ripen slowly. The environmental combination of soil, protective hills, and surrounding mountains make this part of California ideal for growing wine-making grapes. The Napa Valley region is home to some 500 wineries, 1000 brands, and approximately 90 tasting rooms. September temperatures in Napa usually range from 75 to 85 degrees, but the temperatures were much warmer in September this year. Temperatures in San Francisco and the surrounding bay area reached the mid-nineties. Despite the heat, Napa Valley was picturesque and beautiful; filled with golden pastures and gentile rolling hills, intermittently striped with lush green rows of grape vines, and other vegetation. The wines we sampled from three producers were outstanding. If Napa Valley is a bucket list item or if you are a wine lover, I highly recommend visiting for at least a day or longer. Anytime you visit San Francisco or Northern California, give some serious thought about taking a trip to Napa Valley. Here are a few things you should consider.

RESEARCH THE VINEYARDS If your goal is to discover and learn about different wines, develop a plan. Figure out what types of grapes are harvested, what wines are produced, and what you can glean from the experience. Be open-minded. Research each vineyard you plan to visit and be sure to check out the event calendar for Napa Valley before you go. During our visit, we attended a Culinary Institute of America (CIA) series event celebrating regional American cuisine. The event was part of the CIA’s Annual Summer Food and Cultural Series and featured 2006 CIA graduate and classically trained chef, master sommelier Carlton McCoy, Managing Partner of Lawrence Wine Estates, and host of the CNN documentary series “NOMAD with Carlton McCoy.”

PLAN YOUR EXCURSION You can book flights into San Francisco or Oakland and Napa has a small regional airport. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) System affords movement through the region easily, especially if you don’t plan on renting a car. Here is the BART link: https://www.bart.gov/ planner. If you plan to stay in San Francisco, You can catch the ferry from San Francisco to Vallejo, routes and fees can be found at https://sanfranciscobayferry.com. Take your time and limit your visits to no more than 3-4 vineyards per day. If you plan to drive, please have a designated driver.

MAKE RESERVATIONS Most vineyards will have a set selection of wines to sample each day or season. This usually includes 4 or 5 mixed seasonal selections, with maybe one or two new releases. Most vineyards require reservations and have designated tasting rooms for club members on their properties. Most will also require a fee or charge with their reservations. Again, we visited three vineyards, and each one required a fee for the tasting. However, you can get around the fee if you become a club member, purchase a set amount of wine, or are accompanied by a club member. Plan a trip and enjoy the richness of the Napa Valley!

For this alfresco Autumn Dinner Party, Chef Kyle draws on favorite fall recipes updated for a modern palate and paired with wine selections to complement the bountiful feast. Hannah creates an iconic autumn ambiance using artisanal table settings and mixed flannels for each guest to blanket any chill on a brisk evening. Whether for Friendsgiving, Thanksgiving or a new November tradition, it’s time to get outdoors again surrounded in sweater-weather coziness while sharing bites and clinks with family and friends.

• Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
