This eloquent quote from the great American poet and journalist, Mr. William Cullen Bryant, leaves my sun-kissed skin wrapped in a cloak of goose bumps. As I write this, sitting at my cluttered glass top desk, it is July. The leaves of the poplar treat outside my window remain green, the evening air is buzzing with lightning bugs and the giggles of young children playing tag dance through the warm breeze. Wearing my polka-dotted bikini has become more of a regular fashion statement than it should be at this point, but with fall just around the corner it feels only right to allow every last ray of sun to kiss my skin that will soon become pale under the smock of fall and winter. But as I've worked on this issue, I've yearned for the fall nights that I love so much–sitting by a crackling fire, carving pumpkins with my family and eating so much kettle corn that I can practically feel the sugar running through my veins. This issue dedicated to style has made me feel ready to pull my leather boots over my

I'm ready for the swathes of buttery-soft cashmere and wool scarfs that will soon succeed the itty bitty bikinis on the racks at my favorite department stores. I'm ready to strut through town clutching my timeless leather bag (page 18) paired with a luxurious handembroidered scarf (page 14). I'm ready for camomile tea and the crunch of leaves beneath my feet. Most of all, I'm ready for fall in all of it's glory. Let's enjoy it together, shall we?

LIFE TIME ATHLETIC PROMOTES EMPLOYEE TO SENIOR GENERAL MANAGER Following the successful opening and subsequent operation of Life Time Athletic Charlotte in December 2017, General Manager Johnny Groff will bring his industry expertise to all Life Time locations in the Charlotte region as the new Senior General Manager. Groff opened Life Time Athletic Charlotte and has since been managing the 320,000 squarefoot development in South Charlotte where he oversaw all day-to-day logistics for each amenity. OWN TOUCH SOCCER COMES TO CHARLOTTE In June, Own Touch Charlotte opened its doors in the OrthoCarolina Wellness Center to provide year-round, unlimited technical and athletic performance training for youth soccer players at all levels. PURPLESTRIDE CHARLOTTE ON SEPTEMBER 15 PurpleStride Charlotte is the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network's annual run/walk to end pancreatic cancer. The fundraiser and event will take place on Saturday, September 15, with the opening ceremony beginning at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K run/ walk. Coach Ron Rivera of the Carolina Panthers is serving as the Honorary Starter and will be joined by TV reality star and singer/songwriter Erin Willett, who lost her father to pancreatic cancer in 2011. Willett will be performing her song "Hope's Alive."

FOR FARAH USMANI, THE LOVE OF HAND EMBROIDERY CAME AT A VERY EARLY AGE. She recalls her grandmother and mother practicing the art form, smocking by hand, in the British way. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Usmani came to the United States as a small child. She maintains ties with her native country, returning every couple of years. Usmani began searching for hand embroidered items as an adult and was frustrated to find that although items were advertised as handmade, were often poor quality and crafted by a machine. Color choice was also an issue as she found that hues would vary and were inconsistent with descriptions. Finally, Usmani found someone who made her aware of craftswomen working in rural Pakistan. When she learned the women were using their earnings to help educate their children, Usmani decided she could do something more than her personal shopping: She created Farah Usmani Collectibles and now sells a selection of scarves representing these craftswomen in the United States. The craftswomen are from a mid-sized agricultural city with a high illiteracy rate. However, thanks to social media, they have a heightened awareness of educational opportunities for their children. credits social media with sparking important conversations about globalization, education and pursuing careers so that future generations can prosper. These craftswomen have handed down hand embroidery techniques including the French knot and shadow work from generation to generation. The work is meticulous and painstaking; each scarf takes a minimum of three months to create. Usmani contributes to the design process by accumulating data from the Western market. She researches which colors and design patterns customers respond to most favorably and request most often. Despite the geographical distance that separates the artists from consumers, Usmani feels there is a strong connection: “People that appreciate the scarves in Charlotte are probably never going to meet those women, but it’s transcendent; they appreciate [the] art." It is Usmani’s hope that each scarf will be handed down from mother to daughter, from one generation to the next, as a legacy item carrying the message of women helping women. To encourage this, Usmani gives each scarf a title in honor of a strong woman. For instance, one is Becoming Jane for legendary author Jane Austen. Craftswomen who create the scarves use the money they earn to educate their children and to sustain their families. The initiative encompasses the past by reviving the art form of hand embroidery, the present by allowing women to help women and the future by supporting education through scholarships. Farah Usmani Scholarships are given to public high school students and future international business leaders who demonstrate leadership. Usmani asserts it is vital that we nurture future leaders who promote the ways in which we are alike rather than ostracizing one another due to our differences.

Her work has been featured across the country and is highly praised for it's durability, unique yet simplistic style and timeless value. TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF. I was born in Fries, Virginia, which is a small little town on the New River in Grayson County. There's a lot of mountains but not a whole lot more. In the early 1900's, it was a boom town that was basically around, and for, the textile mill. So I guess I have textiles in my blood. My grandmothers and great aunts were avid sewers and quilters, and though my own mother didn't really care for that stuff herself, she was a nurse at the Hanes plant, so there was cloth work all around me. My dad was a local favorite, being a coach at the high school and very much an outdoorsman. I was mostly known as one of "coach's girls" CONTINUED >
