It seems it was just the other day that we launched our premier issue in early 2016. I had just transitioned from 33 years in corporate life to proprietor of my new pride and joy: South Charlotte Lifestyle. The goal was simple: to play a role in helping the area flourish by producing each issue as a resource with interesting content, special events, tantalizing recipes, and more. I started this publication to keep busy after retirement; little did I know that my new hobby would entail so much effort—and reward. Over the past two years, we have highlighted a variety of stories, from a guide to cooking with beer, to traveling to the Galapagos Islands, to our first Readers’ Choice. Those are just a few of my favorites, but the list goes on. The decision to start this community magazine came with a commitment to “paying it forward”

We believe comfort is much more than cozy chairs and down feather pillows. For us, and our clients, it’s about being able to access, store, and organize your home. Making our clients’ lives easier is important to us, and we’re thrilled to bring more happiness into their homes along the way.

Your kitchen should make you happy. It shouldn’t be frustrating to make new recipes or spur-of-the-moment cupcakes, or to host unforgettable dinner parties. Streamline your space and improve access - no more awkward bending and twisting.
STORAGE
Making a sandwich should be easy. But if you can’t see the peanut butter, reach the jelly, or grab the bread without knocking things over, it’s just not. Transform your pantry and increase storage space by up to 50%.

BEETS GET A BAD REP’. The colorful roots maintain notoriety as earthily piquant, but that’s not necessarily the case, according to Burtons Grill & Bar chef Ray Girman and reformed tastebuds across the city. “Beets can be a misunderstood item in any root cellar or on a grocer’s shelf,” Girman says with a laugh and a nod to grandma’s boiled beets. But as Girman points out, the brightly hued veggies can harbor a host of flavors. “Depending on the cooking method, beets can taste extremely sweet without the earthiness that most people are used to.” Thanks to the piedmont’s abundant growing season, beets are a popular choice for local gardeners, usually as a spring or fall crop in the Carolinas. Most grocers and markets should have a profundity of beets this time of year, too. If you’d rather skip the garden and the grocer altogether, Burtons is a healthy, allergen-aware option for even the most particular of eaters, offering a variety of gluten-sensitive and paleo options. The creative menu and attention to ingredients is what drew Girman to Burtons, especially because he likes to incorporate his science background (he studied biology at the Virginia Military Institute) into his cooking. Burton's creative and flexible menu allows Girman to incorporate a rainbow of tasty fruits and veggies into his dishes—healthful options like beets.

CAMPING AND HIKING AT MAX PATCH & BLACK BALSAM
16
South Charlotte Lifestyle | April 2018
LIKE ALL GOOD VIEWS, MAX PATCH SITS AT THE APEX OF AN ALMOST UNNAVIGABLE GRAVEL DRIVE. The treaded tires of your four-wheel-drive will scrabble to gain traction among the divets and gullies of Max Patch Road; your knuckles will whiten against the black leather of your steering wheel; the narrow stretch of gravel will seem to stretch on endlessly into the dense forest, broken only by the occasional rumble of passing jeeps. But when you close your door and hike the steep, grassy knoll to the peak, you’ll understand why it was all worth it. Max Patch is a bald, an ecological enigma where trees don’t grow, which you’ll find spotted across Appalachia. This weird natural feature affords unparalleled, unobstructed and unmarred views of the surrounding Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains. From the treeless, 4,629-foot vantage, hikers witness a stunning kaleidoscope of blues and greens and hundreds of miles of rolling mountains. When you arrive, the first thing you’ll want to do is simple: soak it in. Spread a picnic blanket and wonder at the glorious, boundless scene and bask in the feeling that you’re on top of the world. Max Patch is a draw for visitors of all types, especially through-hikers of the Appalachian Trail (which crosses the summit). Hungry for company, it’s easy to strike up a conversation with an AT-er and gain some insight into life on the Trail. But you didn’t come here to relax. The 350-acre Max Patch hosts two looping trails: a 1.4-mile short route that crosses the summit, and a 2.4-mile loop that circles the mountain for all the best views. Seasoned hikers can take to the Appalachian Trail and follow it south for 6.2 miles to Lemon Gap; though it’s lengthy, the elevation remains steady, so the hike is all-fun, no-work. The site is arguably the most striking vantage point on the entire Appalachian Trail, and you’ll often find AT-ers camped in the swaying heather of the bald. Pitch your tent in one of the large backpacking campsites in the grove of trees just northeast of the summit. Whether you witness sunrise, sunset, or both, Max Patch’s unique vantage point make it one of the most stunning destinations in all of Western North Carolina for catching the sun’s daily greeting and adieu. Even without the illusory light of the sun, the views of Max Patch are breathtaking: a blanket of stars blinks overhead and the mountains below roll in a rainbow of navy and cerulean. In all seasons of the year and all times of the day, Max Patch affords an almost otherworldly escape for Charlotteans.

GIVING BACK
out of the woods ARTICLE EMILY GLASER PHOTOGRAPHY JASON E. MICZEK/TREESCHARLOTTE
WHAT’S GREEN, BROWN AND AN INTEGRAL PIECE OF CHARLOTTE’S FUTURE? Trees. These gentle giants may seem like an easy piece of the Queen City’s elaborate puzzle—after all, they line our curving streets and fill our parks with dappled shade in summer and colorful, crinkling piles of leaves in fall—but the role of trees is actually a complex one that requires nimble hands and knowledgeable nurturing. Enter TreesCharlotte. The nonprofit’s roots (no pun intended) reach back to 2010, when a cadre of experienced philanthropists and existing organizations like Foundation For The Carolinas and The Knight Foundation formed a committee with the intention of raising the profile of our local urban forest and engaging and educating the community on caring for and planting trees. By 2012, the committee had matured into TreesCharlotte. Today, the nonprofit has planted some 25,000 trees and held more than 100 community events. Since the organization’s beginnings, their intentions have remained the same, though their implementations have changed. “Initial efforts were heavily focused on planting at the expense of not stewarding or caring for trees. We soon realized the planting is the beginning, not the end of the process of expanding and diversifying the urban forest,” explains Dave Cable, Founding Executive Director of TreesCharlotte, bringing to mind the old “teach a man to fish” maxim. Add to that more effective education programs and an increased awareness of the importance of community engagement, and the organization is booming (or should we say “blooming?”). The tenets and programs of TreesCharlotte are four-fold, though each arm of the organization fosters both education and social equity. “TreeDays are events at CMS schools where we plant trees using
20
South Charlotte Lifestyle | April 2018
community, corporate and student volunteers. School plantings make up 39% of TreesCharlotte’s annual plantings,” says Executive Director Chuck Cole. Using teacher “TreeChampions,” the program continues to educate a new generation of tree-huggers long after they’re planted. A spectrum of volunteers fosters community connection across traditional barriers. “NeighborWoods are tree stores held in neighborhoods,” he continues. "They’re intended to both grow the canopy and to build neighborly love.” Focusing on underserved neighborhoods, TreesCharlotte uses neighborhood leaders to enlist their neighbors to register for trees to plant on their property. “Each neighbor who takes trees will be taught by an official TreesCharlotte TreeMaster how to plant and properly care for their new trees to ensure they live and thrive.” As Cable mentioned before, the organization realized early on that simply planting the trees and walking away was an unstable model. That’s why stewardship remains an important tenet of the organization. Regular events round up volunteers to care for the trees and build community, too. But perhaps most important of the organization’s creeds? Education. “Charlotte has a large younger generation that will soon be the keepers of Charlotte’s canopy,” Cole notes. “Teaching them to properly care for trees and to appreciate the benefits of trees keeps future generations engaged.” Charlotte’s trees help keep our air clean, our soil stable, and our temperatures regulated, but they won’t be able to do any of those things without the help of the Queen City community. “Growing and preserving our canopy is everyone’s problem!” Cole proclaims. “We must come together to help keep our canopy healthy and in turn, keep us healthy.”
WANT TO HELP? “As our city continues to grow, it’s important that longtime residents and newcomers alike help with our mission,” Cole says. “Each of us plays an important role in the ‘civic covenant‘ to plant more trees and improve the quality of life for all of Charlotte’s neighborhoods.” Here are his tips for getting involved: + Organize a NeighborWoods Event: We provide free trees for residents to plant in their own yard and in neighborhood common areas. Residents sign a pledge to care for the trees and take a class with a designated TreeMaster about choosing the right tree and proper planting techniques. + Volunteer: Roll up your sleeves, meet some neighbors, have a good time and help out the environment – all at the same time by planting trees! + Become a TreeMaster: After receiving training on volunteer management, proper planting techniques, and care and maintenance of trees, TreeMasters serve as volunteer leaders and are vital to the success of planting and stewardship events throughout Charlotte. + Sponsorship: Through TreesCharlotte’s Corporate Volunteer Program, employees have an opportunity to lend a hand to expand the tree canopy and help make Charlotte a cleaner, greener and more inviting place to live and work. DRIVER’S NOTEBOOK
eco-commute ARTICLE WESLEY BROWN
OUR DAILY COMMUTE INVOLVES A DREADED ROUTINE: WE WAIT IN A LINE OF EXHAUST TO GLUG OVERPRICED GASOLINE INTO OUR CARS, BARRAGED BY ATTENDANT SMALL TALK AND THE HONK OF RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC BEHIND US. But what if you could zip your car to and from the office without ever stopping to fill ‘er up? With the T8 family of Volvo cars, you can. “T8 Volvos are capable of going up to 15 miles on purely electric power, so owners with short commutes have the option of using no gas at all,” says Greg Simons, General Sales Manager of Volvo Cars Charlotte. These fuel-efficient and electric-powered SUVs, including the XC60 and XC90, have all the dynamism of an SUV in an environmentally-friendly package. “All of Volvo’s US offerings are powered by versions of the 2.0 Drive-E and offer the high fuel economy expected of a smaller displacement 4-cylinder combined with excellent, real-world performance,” explains Simons. “The T8 versions of the XC60, XC90, and S90 use an electric motor powering the rear wheels, in addition to the turbocharged and supercharged gas engine powering the front wheels, for a total of 400 horsepower. In normal driving, the electric motor complements the gas engine, providing increased performance and fuel economy.” The XC90, Volvo’s midsize SUV, has long been popular among daily drivers and enthusiasts alike, prompting the company to redesign their compact SUV, the XC60, to mirror its bigger brother. Sleek design and eco-friendly elements combine in this family of fuel-efficient SUVs. VolvoCharlotte.com | 704.563.1000 7040 East Indepenence Blvd.
HEADLIGHTS “Thor’s Hammer” headlights cast a cool, distinctive glow on night roads.
ENGINE The engine is small but mighty, providing power and performance of engines three times its size.
ELECTRIC MOTOR The electric motor isn’t just efficient, it also pushes the XC90 T8 to accelerate from zero-to-60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

MILEAGE In the XC90 you’ll get 22 mpg city and 29 on the highway (the XC60? 21 city and 28 highway). The XC90’s front wheel drive lends it better mileage.

RENOVATE & REFINE
the wonder of mother nature ARTICLE PATRICE HAWKINS & VALERY HUFFENUS OF DECORATING DEN INTERIORS PHOTOGRAPHY UNIVERSAL FURNITURE
ONE OF TODAY’S HOTTEST DESIGN TRENDS IS A RETURN
Here’s a look at several areas of interior design that can get you
TO NATURE. From fabrics to wall coverings to accessories, our
back to nature!
living spaces can easily reflect an embrace of Mother Nature.
+ FABRICS
Why the growing interest in bringing a little bit of the outdoors
Bouquets of colorful botanicals with flower, leaf and vine prints are peren-
inside? First, we long for peace and quiet at home. As our lives
nial favorites. Imagine relaxing in a lush garden where flowers flourish all
outside our Charlotte homes become more harried and stressful,
around you – soft violets, delicate lilies of the valley, bold hydrangeas and
we are turning to our homes as retreats, and decorating them with
stately red tulips. Fun, faux animal prints remain popular, too. Even zebra
furnishings and accessories we find soothing and comfortable.
stripes and leopard spots will lend an air of the exotic to any room.
Secondly, our increased awareness of the environment and the quest to preserve Charlotte’s beauty has led to a desire to bring bits of it home.
+ COLORS From gorgeous garden shades to the rich fruit tones of deep raspberries, soft banana yellows, plums and strawberries, color from nature livens up any decor. Even nature’s neutrals play their important role: wheat brown, amber waves of grain, the creamy whites of magnolia blossoms and terra cotta corals are all highlighted by an amazing azure blue sky. All these colors are uplifted by nature’s green—the color that will dominate our interior decorating in this decade—from deep, leafy green to teal, to greens with a yellow tint.
+ FURNISHINGS Today’s worn, weathered wood styles, featuring more of a matte finish with lighter wood tones, are even appearing on contemporary furnishings. Sofas and chairs are being covered in natural cotton and sporting trims of raffia and hemp. Wicker and rattan furniture mixed with warm wood tones lend themselves to more of a casual style of decorating.
+ WALL COVERINGS Like fabrics, florals and botanicals are blooming in their popularity. Don’t worry about too much pattern; these blooming designs look great when mixed with stripes, checks or even plaids.
+ WINDOW TREATMENTS Floral print drapery fabrics designed in a traditional swag and jabot treatment will definitely give any room a perennial touch. And by coordinating your “blooming” window treatments with furniture, bedding, even your linens, you’ll find yourself surrounded by Mother Nature’s beauty. Our love of Earth and the resurgence to preserve it influences us to bring nature’s colors into our homes and our everyday lives. And what better way to start soothing the soul than in your own home. Relax! Enjoy! You deserve it! PATRICE HAWKINS and VALERY HUFFENUS are award-winning South Charlotte designers with more than 20 years experience.
