After a day of candy-filled laughs and a costume held together by duck tape and a faulty safety pin, I dawn my Santa hat as soon as the clock strikes midnight on October 31. Don't get me wrong, I love Halloween. But Thanksgiving and Christmas are my jam. It's so easy to get caught in a rut, to focus on the bad instead of good and ultimately give up on trying to find the happy in even the worst of situations. But November offers the perfect time to regroup; to stop, find yourself in the flurry of it all and tell yourself, "I, and every other human being, am worthy of love." Although it may seem silly, that's really what this time of year is all about. We gather on Thanksgiving–sharing smiles and belly laughs between bites of buttery mashed potatoes and wholesome pumpkin pie–and on Christmas–sharing family traditions and watching little ones viciously tear open their presents, gasping in pure joy when they see that Santa has brought them the gift they've been asking for all year long– to spread love and happiness with one another. To experience these moments is to be blessed, regardless of the little things that may have went wrong or the worries of what could happen tomorrow or the next day that cloud your mind. Ground yourself. Be in the moment. It's not silly. Rejoice in all that Thanksgiving and Christmas have to offer, even if that means putting up with your mother-in-law's annoying laugh for a few days or taking on the burden of cooking for 15 instead of four. In the spirit of it all, I'd like to remind each and every reader how thankful I am for

TENNESSEE STIFFS PLAY IN CHARLOTTE August 28 was a rockin' evening at the renowned Milestone Club as Austin-based folk rock quartet, Tennessee Stiffs, let loose their unique, seminal blend of story and mystique-laden Americana music. It was the band's first time in Charlotte, and the evening proved to be a resounding success with local rockers Matt Minchew and Austin McNeil backing them up. Their new album "30 Pieces" is available now.
VERSE & VINO 2018 Verse & Vino, now in its fifth year, is a Charlotte literary tradition. The evening is filled with food, wine and a conversation with five New York Times best-selling authors. It celebrates the joy of reading, writing and libraries, and brings together a community of readers in support of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Foundation. The event takes place on November 1, 2018, at 6 p.m. and will be held at the Charlotte Convention Center. Tickets start at $125.
PINS MECHANICAL COMPANY AND 16-BIT BAR+ARCADE TO COME TO CHARLOTTE Ohio-based Pins Mechanical Company and 16-Bit Bar+Arcade, both children of the parent company, Rise Brands, are set to open in Charlotte's South End sometime in 2019. The two will be housed in a beautifully rustic building at 307 W. Tremont Avenue–just next to Common Market South End and Bang Bang Burgers. Both Pins and 16-Bit will offer an incredible nightlife scene with extensive beer and cocktail lists. Pins will offer games like foosball, pinball, duckpin bowling, ping pong and bocce while 16-Bit will have classic arcade games from the 80s and 90s. 10

NASCAR NAMES NEW PRESIDENT On October 1, Steve Phelps became the newest president of NASCAR. Phelps was promoted to the role in mid-September, and took over for Brent Dewar, who stepped down to transition into a senior consulting role. As president, Phelps reports to NASCAR Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Jim France, and oversees all competition and business operations.
ALLEN TATE MERGES WITH PITTSBURGH FIRM Allen Tate, a Charlotte-based real estate firm, announced on September 20 that it will merge with Pittsburgh real estate firm Howard Hanna. In a statement released by Howard Hanna, the deal was described as a partnership between the two CONTINUED >

PEAR, CRANBERRY AND GINGERSNAP CRUMBLE
INGREDIENTS CRUMBLE + 1 cup all-purpose flour + 1/4 cup granulated sugar + 3 tablespoons packed dark or light brown sugar + 1 cup gingersnap crumbs (about 16 store bought cookies) + 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger + 1/8 teaspoon table salt + Pinch of white pepper + 1/2 cup or 1 stick unsalted butter, melted and cooled
FILLING + 2 pounds or approximately 4 to 5 large ripe pears, peeled, halved, cored and sliced 1/4-inch thick + 1 1/2 cups fresh cranberries + 1 tablespoon lemon juice + 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest + 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract + 1/2 cup granulated sugar + 2 tablespoons cornstarch
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. 2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, gingersnap crumbs, ginger and salt. Stir in the melted butter until large crumbs form. 3. In a 2-quart baking dish, combine the pears, cranberries, lemon juice, lemon zest and vanilla. 4. In a small bowl, whisk the sugar and cornstarch together. INGREDIENTS + 1 cup pumpkin + 2 eggs + 3 tablespoons peanut butter + 2 1/2 cups oat flour or whole wheat flour (plus a little extra if dough is too sticky) + Optional: 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F 2. In a large bowl, combine the pumpkin, eggs and peanut butter using a whisk. 3. Adding about 1/2 cup at a time, begin to fold in you 2½ cups of flour. (If you’re choosing to use cinnamon, add it here.) If the mixture is sticky, add small amounts of flour until a dough forms 4. Roll the dough until it is approximately 1/4 of an inch thick and cut with your favorite cookie cutters. 5. Place treats on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15 minutes.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY CHARLOTTE’S DECONSTRUCTION SERVICE WAS CREATED TO REMOVE AND RECYCLE KITCHEN CABINETS, COUNTERTOPS AND APPLIANCES SLATED FOR REPLACEMENT IN KITCHEN REMODELING PROJECTS.
The homeowner gets a tax deduction and headache-free experience, and Habitat earns proceeds by reselling the donated items through a network of four Habitat ReStores in Charlotte. The process is easy, says Phil Prince, director of marketing and communications for Habitat Charlotte. He credits Deconstruction Program Director, Colin Hayes, with effectively marketing the service by spreading the word to contractors, remodelers and local home improvement stores. Following an initial evaluation by Hayes and his team to ensure the materials are in satisfactory condition for resale, the deconstruction process is scheduled, and usually takes place within two weeks. Charlotte homeowners who use the service—for which there is no charge, by the way—can expect a qualified, professional
crew in their home. The process is generally completed in a day. Rather than paying for commercial demolition and dumpster services that can cost thousands of dollars, homeowners who choose Habitat’s service receive a tax deduction for the donation. This is an environmentally conscious and economically smart decision. Charlotte resident, Andrea Flynn, recently recounted her experience with Hayes and his team. Flynn said the process was a win-win proposition; she saved money and Habitat ReStores received products to sell. Flynn summed up her advice for other homeowners: “It’s silly not to even consider this option—it’s quick, it’s neat, it’s cost saving [and] it’s environmentally friendly.” Are you in the market for cabinets and countertops offered for a fraction of their original cost?
