he summer before my final year at Davidson, I had the opportunity to intern with Crisis Assistance Ministry. It was my shaky introduction to a bevy of new things: a long morning commute on 74, the realities of poverty in Charlotte, and the equal parts sweet and steely leadership of a strong woman in the form of Carol Hardison. It was then that I came to understand exactly what folks meant when they said someone's presence could fill a room. The CEO glowed, with kindness and competency and pure clout. Her savvy mastery of her role inspired me to grab hold of my own reins. There's a constant dialogue between women, evidenced by my bespectacled, 20-yearold admiration for Hardison. We need strong, female leaders to act as role models, and in Charlotte, we've got plenty of them to choose from. On page 18, we've profiled Hardison and two other astoundingly successful Charlotte women, Dianne Bailey and Mayor Roberts, and asked them to share some of their tips for success with all you aspiring women.

hen I was a student at Davidson, our off-campus dining options were pretty limited. If you didn’t want the fried fare of the Brickhouse or a styrofoamed shake from the Soda Shop, you piled into your roommate’s car and trekked into the big city. These days, students and

residents of the wee town have it much easier. When the craving for James Beard-nominated, Bon Appetit-favored fare strikes, well, they just take a stroll down Main Street to Kindred. Housed in the former home of the (seemingly immortal) Tom Clark Museum, where dusty gnomes used to peer through newspa-

pered windows, you’ll now find the airy, chicly rustic restaurant. With squishy, well-worn leather chairs and shining subway tiles, it’s part modern and part provincial. That embodiment of all different eras and cultures was exactly the intention of owners and chefs Joe and Katy Kindred. After individual careers traveling the world and working in some of the best restaurants across the globe, Katy and Joe crossed paths while employed at the Pump Room in Chicago. When it came time to settle down and start a family, the Kindreds decided on Joe’s old hometown of Davidson. “We knew we eventually wanted to start a restaurant close to family where we could make a big impact,” Katy remembers. They envisioned a restaurant on Main Street downtown, but never did they anticipate the viability of their wildest dreams. Though the community warned them of the unlikelihood of Clark surrendering his prized location on Main Street, the Kindreds asked to see the space anyways, convincing the broker to pitch their restaurant idea to Clark. And then, miraculously, they gained approval to turn the space into Kindred. The award-winning restaurant is on the brink of its second anniversary and as successful as ever. The self-described “chef-driven” Kindred presents global fare with a Southern twist. “When we put the project together, we never wanted to pigeonhole ourselves; we wanted to be able to adapt and evolve,” she explains. “The spirit of the restaurant is marked by our experiences together through all our travel, our work with all different chefs, and our varied experiences put together. ‘Chef-driven’ is the only way to call it—it’s literally driven by the experiences of the owners.” Even though the dishes at Kindred are distinctly worldly, they’re also distinctly Southern. “When you work with your regional ingredients, you’re going to be influenced by them,” Katy says. But “Southern” doesn’t just mean biscuits and butter. “Sometimes people look at Southern food differently, like it’s never supposed to change, but that’s just not the case. It should also evolve and change. Otherwise it gets boring.” The dish the Chef Joe Kindred prepared for us this month is anything but boring. Try making this bucatini at home for a citrusy twist on the classic dish.

BUCATINI WITH MISO, EGG YOLK, SHRIMP AND CITRUS ■ 1 lb box dry bucatini or Spaghetti ■ ½ cup + 1 tbsp room temperature unsalted butter ■ ½ cup white miso paste ■ 1 lb fresh NC shrimp, cleaned and dried with paper towel ■ Kosher salt ■ 6 large eggs (separate and reserve yolks and discard whites) ■ 3 lemons, juiced and zested Add bucatini to a large pot of boiling, salted water according to package instructions, minus 2 minutes recommended cook time. Mix half of the butter (1/4 cup) with ½ cup of miso until smooth. While pasta is cooking, add 1 tbsp butter to separate large, nonstick skillet on medium-high heat. When butter is melted, add shrimp and gently cook until opaque (do not brown). Add miso-butter mixture and let toast with shrimp for about a minute.

When pasta is done, remove from water and add directly to non-stick skillet (do not discard the pasta water). Toss the pasta around with the shrimp and miso butter until all the miso butter is melted and evenly coats noodles. Add a cup of the reserved pasta water and cook it down, stirring frequently until reduced by about half. Add the remaining butter and cook until liquid has reduced again by half. Sauce should be thickened, but not pasty.

Remove from heat and stir frequently to release heat. Add lemon zest and juice to your palate’s desire. With a whisk, add approximately one tablespoon of hot pasta water to egg yolks, stirring vigorously to temper yolks. Slowly add the yolks to the pasta, stirring vigorously so not to scramble eggs, until sauce thickens into a beautiful glossy yellow. Portion pasta and serve immediately.

Dianne Bailey isn’t from here, but you’d never guess it from the way she talks about our city. Charlotte has seeped into her soul. Her arrival in Charlotte was practically accidental. After moving with her husband Brian three times in the first five years of their marriage, they finally settled in our Southern city and his hometown. “Within six weeks, I realized this was where I was meant to be,” she remembers. “People here are so gracious and welcoming, so eager to support and encourage each other.” It’s this same bright optimism that colors the days of the incredibly accomplished lawyer, who seems to walk in those perfectly practiced footsteps to which we all aspire. For one thing, she landed her dream job and is unerringly passionate about the work she does every day. “To work at Robinson Bradshaw is such a gift professionally and personally; the firm has given me the ability to live out my passion with authenticity,” she says of her position, in which she’s able to focus solely on helping nonprofits locally and across the country. “The firm provides me with a highly respected platform to be entrepreneurial and creative in a specialized niche. It’s such a benefit to our clients.” Bailey’s impact echoes through Charlotte, including local women’s organizations like Women’s Executives (she currently serves as president) and the Women Impact Fund, which advances women as leaders in philanthropy and our city. “Over the years, women’s leadership in Charlotte has become much more inclusive and increasingly grassroots,” she says. “You don’t need a big title with a Fortune 50 company, and you don’t need a name that comes from multiple generations in this community. There’s a place at the table for many different voices and women.” It’s this same generous spirit that marks Bailey’s perspective on our community. When asked what advice she would offer to an aspiring woman, or man, her answer is simple. “Start from a place of gratitude,” Bailey says with a smile. “It’s so deep in the DNA in Charlotte, which is why I love it here. I can finally exhale, this is home, because we are willing and eager to extend beyond our own skin.”

When we’re little girls, we have dreams. We press plastic stethoscopes to teddy bear hearts or tack shiny sheriff’s badges to our chests. And some of us, those with the strongest imaginations, dream of being a mayor. Mayor Jennifer Roberts is the symbolic representation of such dreams. A native of Charlotte, Roberts grew up in a family that valued serving the community. That hereditary dedication to the community would prove to be the foundation of her career, and her life. Roberts’ accolades started early, when she attended Chapel Hill on a Morehead Scholarship, then pursued two masters degrees in international affairs. Though international affairs first caught the bright glint of her eyes, Roberts soon realized her true passion lay where it had begun, in her community. “My local interest started when my oldest child started public school here in Charlotte,” she remembers. “There was a mismatch between what was happening in schools and what politicians were saying was happening. I found it strange that there weren’t any moms on the County Commission, which, along with the state and federal governments, is responsible for the education budget, so I thought it was a good idea to offer that perspective and work hard for education.” Though it was education that initially brought wick to flame for Roberts’ local interests, it was much more than that which kept her engaged. “I quickly became interested in local politics when I saw the difference it

makes in peoples lives,” she says. Mayor Roberts’ platform is one of strength, resiliency and honesty, characteristics easily ascribed to the mayor herself. “I think we still struggle with women in leadership, though we’re certainly better off now than 20 to 30 years ago,” she says with candor. “There are a lot more women role models and women who have achieved that executive status. There were always women in the workforce, the difference is there were not as many at the heads of organizations until recently.” Though she certainly recognizes the strides the city has made—after all, she is a female mayor—she encourages all women to continue to strive for more. “Be ready for a tough road. It’s still bumpy and competitive, and there are still people who aren’t used to seeing women in certain roles.” 20

Carol Hardison

Chief Executive Officer, Crisis Assistance Ministry Carol Hardison always knew her path. “I was raised in a justice-oriented household in a family that was dedicated to

equal rights and justice, and I believe service is in my DNA,” she says emphatically. It really does seem to be a familial trait for Hardison, whose mother founded the first clothing bank and food pantry in her small hometown. “As we were growing up, it was so important that we heard stories of how she gave voice and power to people who were marginalized or even forgotten,” she remembers. So it’s no surprise that Hardison is the longtime CEO of Crisis Assistance Ministry, a nonprofit that’s leading the charge in changing the socioeconomic plights of Charlotte from the ground up. But how Hardison ended up here, and at Crisis Assistance Ministry, was somewhat a coincidence. The Florida native never imagined herself far enough north to shelve her flip-flops, but when Duke Energy offered her an opportunity thirty years ago, she ventured to Charlotte. Even then, she never imagined herself staying. “Because I knew in my heart that I would end up in a service-related

job, I always thought Charlotte would be a temporary stop,” she says. “But as the city kept growing and presenting more opportunities personally and professionally, ultimately now it presents professionally the biggest challenge in my life. The fact that I live in a city

I’m not leaving anytime soon.” Charlotte is definitely home for Hardison, and as a woman, it’s a home she’s proud to call her own. “In the 30-plus years that I’ve lived here, I have seen us elect our first female mayor (in the ‘80s), the company that brought me to Charlotte now has its first female CEO, and all this has been in parallel to an era of increased opportunities for women. Moving here and growing up in this era has given me opportunities to be part of a conversation that I would not have been part of before.” As a female leader in Charlotte, Hardison is pointedly changing the conversations of our city. “What I see is we are living in a city that was largely planned, designed and created by men who are white,” she points out. “What’s interesting and challenging is that they helped create a city that’s diverse (in color, sex, age, etcetera). I am proud to ensure that all these new voices, of this great city that our forefathers planned, are heard at the table.”

cross the country, in trendy watering holes and local dives, at patio tables and polished bars, Americans are drinking craft beer. It’s not just bearded, flanneled gentlemen drinking the bubbly beverage these days. In 2014, a reported 32% of craft beer consumed in our country was sipped and swilled by ladies. And yet, in that same year, a Stanford University study found that only 4% of American breweries had similarly sexed brewmasters or brewers at their head. It’s a notable disparity, and a common one: an industry whose fruits are shared by all, but whose leadership is traditionally doled out to guys. Fortunately, those are percentages that are quickly changing. The past few years have offered a marked increase in the number of female brewers, and even our own Southern city got her first First Lady in the form of Alexa Long. Long’s ardor for ales is longstanding, beginning at the tender (and legal) age of 21. “I developed a serious passion for craft beer right when I was 21,” Long begins. “I was working at a craft beer bar and was introduced to it while I was finishing up my finance degree at UNCC. I knew I didn’t want to pursue a traditional job, so I decided to make a career out craft beer.” When Long talks about her decision it seems like a casual one, but given the statistics, it’s anything but. In a male-dominated industry like craft beer, where hearty facial hair and biceps aren’t just the norm but practically a requirement, setting your sights on the physically demanding, practiced palate position of head brewer, well, it’s pretty darn bold. “I always knew it was a male-dominated industry. When I worked at a home-brew store, everyone looked past me. Everyone wanted to talk to the guy with the beard,” Long says with a laugh. But she shrugs it off now, just as she did then. “I just love brewing,” she answers when asked if her breaking of industry standards was an intentional one. craft beer shop, Alternative Beverage. Most ladies interested in the beer industry tend to gravitate toward the business side, as a sales rep or in marketing, and Long nearly fell into such a traditional role. “I thought I wanted to be a sales rep originally,” she remembers. “To just drink and sell beer. But I’m just not as talkative as some of those sales folks, and that’s why I decided to go the brewery route.” Rather than saddling up to the bar and hocking her brews, Long gets her hands dirty and her muscles sore behind the scenes. Her first brewing position at Heist Brewery proved to be the perfect, welcoming introduction. As a pilot brewer producing ten fun, small batches every month, Long developed her brewing chops and her recipe book. And then, a year ago this month, she helped open Legion Brewing. At Legion, Long offers four flagships and rotates the other eight taps with seasonal brews. "The great thing about working at Legion is that, from the start, nobody was the least bit concerned about whether I was a female," Long says. "It just doesn’t matter here, so everyone at Legion has always treated me just 28

like everyone else. In fact, we have a number of strong women working at Legion, and we named a special brew, ‘Just a Regular Girl,’ to recognize all of them.” Long was Charlotte’s first and only female Head Brewer, and given the greenness of the scene, she’s really helping to establish the local brewery culture as one that’s open to women. “The Charlotte brew scene is so young, really only five or six years old, and because it’s so young we’ve all grown up together,” she points out. “We all used to work at the homebrew store together, so we all know each other. It fosters this healthy competition, and forces everyone to up the quality, the diversity, and to develop a unique brand.” But it’s all still friendly; the brewers will call on their neighbors for the proverbial cup of sugar or, in this case, barrel of hops. In truth, it’s the best possible setting for a young, headstrong woman to break into a traditionally male industry. Really though, Long doesn’t see herself as some pioneer or trailblazer. She may be carving a niche in a male-dominated industry, but to Long, she’s just a girl who loves her job.
