middle to high school students to create a resume online. The organization runs career skill sessions at schools around the country and now, with Floyd’s network, it will be ramping up in the Charlotte area. JobsyWobsy just hosted nearly 150 students at Queens University of Charlotte, with students from Myers Park High School and Hunter Huss High School (Floyd’s alma mater). These workshops demonstrate the need for kids to be involved and see their extracurricular activities as applicable in the workplace. “Once kids put their experience on paper, we often see them eager to take advantage of more opportunities because they see the value of those activities as it relates to their future,” said Floyd. A constant focus on “what’s next” drove Floyd to be one of the best in basketball and it’s a mantra he stresses with JobsyWobsy kids. “I attended a basketball camp in the ninth grade with 500 other kids. Press Maravich came to talk to us about our future and I’ll never forget that day. He looked at us and said, ‘Out of the hundreds of kids here today, one of you, one of you may have the chance to make it
Prior to arriving at Hughes Floor Covering, we visited four different flooring stores. No one was able to adequately assist us. The sales associate at Hughes was more than accommodating. He was not only knowledgeable about our options, he gave suggestions, had personal experience in installing the flooring system and provided us with samples to take home. On our installation day, our order was on time and the installers were friendly and very competent. They ensured we were completely satisfied, respected our property and left the work area clean. They did what they said they would do in every phase of the process.” – Recent Customer
to the NBA.’ I remember thinking to myself, I hope it’s me,” he said. “At that moment, I put everything I had into giving myself the best chance to make it to that goal. It’s the same with these kids. If we can teach them to set that goal, whether it’s college, to get a job in college or get a job in high school, they can line up everything they do — all their activities, their classes — behind that goal.” JobsyWobsy holds job fairs for high school and college students, connecting them with major companies. At a recent fair in Raleigh, the organization placed several students with part-time jobs at Microsoft, Coca-Cola and the Raleigh Fire Department. These fairs are another great way for them to involve the broader community. Their work is always free to the students—that’s why they need funding. They’re asking donors and the Charlotte business community to lend support in their efforts to bring more trainings to schools in our area. What Can You Do to Help? According to Gary Silverstein, owner of Charlotte based Mann Travels, “All cruise lines are not created equal…and travelers should choose wisely when looking for a true luxury experience.” And “luxury” can mean different things to different people, so a good, experienced travel professional can help match the traveler with the best experience. Is a staff that delivers unexpected service important? Is the intimacy of a small guest count paramount? Or are unique touring experiences in far-flung destinations what matters most? For many upscale travelers, an all-inclusive price while traveling is also important so there are no additional charges for things such as wifi, alcohol, gratuities, and any other items that are extra on more traditional cruises.

SWELL DESIGN ON CREATING YOUR PERFECT MASTER BEDROOM ARTICLE ANGIE PERSSON AND MERIN LOWE

South Charlotte Lifestyle | January 2017
S
erene, luxurious, romantic and welcoming are just a few words that describe the ideal master bedroom. These are the characteristics everyone should feel in their personal space of a bedroom and we strive to give our clients just that. Whether big, small, in the middle of the room or against the wall, a master bed is meant to provide both comfort and style. It’s the focal point and pure purpose of the room. “Master” originated from Latin meaning principal, main, chief, biggest and most important. The definition of the root word master is applicable in interior design as well. A master bedroom is meant to be grand and the most important room. You may not spend the majority of your time in the master bedroom but it’s what nurtures you and provides peace and rest to refuel your spirit for your everyday life. After a long day of working, running the kids around, or just enjoying a nice day outside, it’s the best feeling knowing my bed is there to great me. I am almost positive I’m not alone in saying that I look forward to the moment I can step foot into my bedroom and unwind. We all look forward to pulling down the plush comforter and velvety soft sheets, to curling up against a plethora of pillows and just letting out a sigh of relief and relaxation. CONTINUED >

(CON TI N U ED)
In these master bedrooms in particular we focused on warm color tones and clean lines to create simplicity and sophistication. We usually try to keep the master as calm, cool, and collected as possible and choose to be more expressive and risky in other areas in a home. A master bedroom is the most personal room in a home, so we are deliberate in picking a color pallet that meets our clients’ desires. Greys, earthy browns, or an off white make the best neutral wall color. Neutral walls give us more leeway for creativity and make it easier to add subtle pops of color. At Swell Décor, we like to incorporate other complementary pieces of furniture and style to unite all elements of the room. A spacious seating area, an eye-catching headboard and an aesthetic art piece encompass the ideal elements of a master bedroom Without these common yet unique details and accents, the bedroom would just be a bedroom and not a personal sanctuary. Our design philosophy centers around the idea that a welcoming home is collected over time, not decorated overnight. For your master bedroom to achieve sweet serenity, transform into a safe place, and provide superlative sleep satisfaction, seek Swell Décor and we will make your master dreams into everyday reality.

ACTIVATE A FITTER YOU WITH THESE TIPS FROM EMILY "BREEZE" WATSON AND STAX BOOTCAMP ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY KACY BURKE
I
f you've been on the South Charlotte Fitness scene at all in the last year, you probably know all about STAX Bootcamp
and the extra buzz they are building right here in Charlotte. We caught up with Emily "Breeze" Watson and the crew to catch the action and get a few insider tips on staying in motion. Over the last half decade, The Queen City has been quickly gaining in the ranks among the healthiest cities in the United States. This year alone, Charlotte jumped from the 43rd spot to the 39th. This is thanks largely to our city’s collective commitment to making a positive change, along with the dedication of such big names in the fitness industry as Randy Moss and Emily Breeze Watson, arguably the most outspoken proponents for this campaign to make our city the fittest in the country. Perhaps the best part about this community-based movement is that there is no invitation necessary. There are no rules, and the only way to do it wrong is to not do it at all. So, whether you’re just finding your way to fitness for the first time or rekindling your relationship with exercise, don’t wait. Just jump in and do it. Here are a few tips for taking that first step, courtesy of Emily Breeze Watson.
DON’T LET INHIBITIONS LIMIT YOU Too often, you hear about people skipping the gym or a fitness class that interests them because they feel intimidated. While it’s certainly easy to relate (it’s tough being a beginner at anything, really), you can’t let this stop you from achieving your goals for a healthier body and better lifestyle. “Everyone has to start somewhere,” says Watson. “At STAX, we have participants of all shapes, sizes, and abilities.” She goes on to explain that the point is to show up and give it your best shot. Again, STAX is a fitness boot camp, which means that it’s going to be tough; it’s meant to be challenging. However, as Emily explains, “It won’t be a beat down.”
BRING SOMEONE WHO WILL HOLD YOU ACCOUNTABLE It has practically become the official mantra of the fitness industry, and for good reason. Countless behavioral and clinical studies have shown that people are better equipped to meet their wellness objectives when they CONTINUED >

enlist the support of a likeminded friend, family member, or coworker. If you’re new to Charlotte or simply don’t know anyone who would be interested in joining you, don’t give up on the idea entirely. You may try tapping into your social media networks to see if anyone has that “friend of a friend” who has also voiced their desire to make a positive change. Meetup.com is also a helpful resource, and if you’re still stuck, consider partnering with someone you meet at the bootcamp.
COMMIT TO YOUR ROUTINE Holding yourself to a specific routine each week does fall under the umbrella of accountability, but it goes beyond that, as well. This is your first step to a healthier, happier version of yourself. It’s about establishing a pattern that, after a time, becomes second nature. “Whether you pick certain days and times of the week or just commit to a certain number of sessions per week, make it a routine,” suggests Emily. “Make it a normal part of your life. We don’t avoid work or other commitments just because we don’t feel like it. Treat fitness the same way, no excuses.” When you’re planning your routine, choose something that will be sustainable for you. A working mom is not likely to stick with a seven-dayper-week, mid-day exercise routine; she should be able to give herself an hour-long workout least three evenings out of each week, however. The idea is not to lower the bar for yourself, but you need to be reasonable about your expectations for yourself. If you’re unsure about how or where to begin establishing your weekly fitness schedule, start by committing to showing up every Monday evening at 6:30 pm for Charlotte’s self-proclaimed biggest and best fitness bootcamp. There, you’ll find several hundred people just like you who are striving CONTINUED >

Wellness At Your Door W
hen was the last time your physician’s office staff told you that you could be seen immediately? For most people, that is an extremely rare occurrence, if they have ever experienced it at all. Instead, you’re greeted by an automated phone tree, and when you do finally hear a human voice, you’re instructed to “please hold.” It’s certainly not ideal, especially if you keep a tight schedule or have medical concerns, and it can almost always be attributed to physician overload. There’s no lack of compassion there; they simply have too many patients. Your case is just one in a long queue of patients waiting to be answered or seen. We’ve all been there, but wouldn’t it be so nice if we could just skip to the front of the line? Historically, only celebrities and other public f igures have enjoyed this privilege. Hiring a personal physician came at a quite a premium, but for obvious reason, those who could afford this service did not think twice about paying the fee. Today, however, concierge medicine is a very realistic possibility for people in a variety of circumstances. You will pay a membership fee, of course, but you can forget about those 26

scary multimillion dollar retainers. Concierge medicine has become very accessible and affordable, and we have one such practice right here in Charlotte. Signature Healthcare was established in 2003 as the go-to provider of personalized, executive-level medical services, and it has since strengthened its foothold as the leader in concierge medicine in the Carolinas. They offer a complete suite of medical services, ranging from primary care to women’s health, geriatric medicine, weight management, and so much more. Most recently, they have launched Signature Pediatrics, the first and only pediatric concierge practice in our region. Whether you are visiting Signature Healthcare or Signature Pediatrics, the standard of care that you can expect to receive includes same-day appointments (either in-office or via telemedicine, depending on the case and your preference), around-theclock access to your team of physicians by phone or email, and little to no wait time when you arrive for your appointment. What’s
SIGNATURE HEALTHCARE DELIVERS WORLD-CLASS CONCIERGE MEDICINE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY ARTICLE MARISSA KASAROV
even better is the extent of the services that are made available to members of the practice. In most traditional medical practices, a need for x-rays, bloodwork, IV medication, or fluids would require a trip to the hospital or another facility. Signature Healthcare and Signature Pediatrics provide all of these services on-site, which means you can skip the germ-ridden emergency room wait in favor of a spa-like atmosphere where your privacy and comfort are treated with utmost respect and care. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that concierge medicine should be reserved for those with severe or complex diseases, however. While same-day “sick appointments” are certainly one of the key benefits, members of the practice also enjoy a superior level of preventive care. Because Signature Healthcare and Signature Pediatrics maintain lower patient-to-doctor ratios than other medical practices, they are able to offer extended appointment times with a comprehensive approach to preventive care and health. This is often enhanced with a follow-up annual physical
letter which reviews lab work and plans for maximizing health. Concierge doctors are able to take their time with you, ensuring that you are extremely well-educated about yours and your children’s health and treatment options available. If your lifestyle demands heavy travel, your Signature physician will prepare your travel kit, call in out-of-state prescriptions if required, and direct you to the nearest medical facility, should you experience an emergency. Interested parties who are not yet members are welcome for a handful of services, as well. If you’d like to experience the Signature Healthcare difference before you commit to a membership, consider scheduling your one-time executive physical or school sports physical here. The practice has offices in SouthPark and Uptown, both of which can be reached by calling 704-554-8787. Visit SignatureHealthcare.org or SignaturePediatrics.org to learn more. All of their dishes are made with locally grown produce when in season and their fast service will have you in and out in no time. JUICE BAR CHARLOTTE

possible, and always made with 100% whole fruits and vegetables. You can choose from one of the options on the menu or come up with your own creation. One of my personal favorites is the Berry Good smoothie, which includes blueberry, banana, cashews, lemon and coconut milk. Juice Bar can become crowded around lunchtime but is much faster than most fast food restaurants. CHOP'T
Chop’t, a creative salad company, is the perfect place to grab a quick, healthy meal. They have a wide variety of toppings and dressings for wraps and salad. They pride themselves in using locally sourced ingredients and local artisans. At Chop’t, no sugar is used in any of their salad dressings. Agave nectar and honey are used as replacements in their sweet dressings. Chop’t features a long bar with three stations. You order your salad or wrap at the first station. The second location is where the food is chopped as finely as you prefer and the third station is where the dressing is added and the salad is tossed. Even during the lunch rush, the most it may take you to get your order is 10 minutes.

f you keep up with the latest trends, you may have noticed that the fitness industry is having a huge impact on fashion. Not only does fitness fashion bring comfort to your everyday routine, it also promotes healthy lifestyles. Whether or not you’re a fitness junkie, the trend of wearing active wear both inside and outside of the gym is here to stay for a while. Here are a few trends for winter that we’re excited about: Beautiful, bold colors: In addition to neutral colors, I’m loving all sorts of deep greens, purples, and plums, as well as burgundy this winter. A lot of gym-goers wear all-black most of the time, but it’s time for you to step out of your comfort zone and go bold! If you think that vibrant orange, green or pink is too much for you, balance out the look with something in black such as a jacket or leggings. Bold Prints: Designers are going all crazy with the prints as well by incorporating high-end fashion styles and inspirations from around the world into the leggings and tees so that one can look ridiculously fashionable while working out. Prints have always been popular in the fitness world, whether it’s geo prints, animal prints or stripes. You may think this is difficult to pull off but there are a variety of subtle prints you can add to your collection. You can either mix and match or even go for a set of matching top and bottoms. Metallic: Some of the hottest active wear styles incorporate vivid and bright colors such as neon and pastel hues with a hint of metallic sheen. With metallic fabric, minimalism is key. Try and add metallic accessories to your active wear - caps, shoes and totes work well. Metallic print tees and tracks also look great. 32

Mesh: We also think the mesh trend is here to stay for another season or two, so bring the mesh with insets on leggings, tops, and sports bras. Mesh is playing a major fashion role in fitness clothing and from tanks to leggings, you can find it everywhere! Mesh hoodies or tank tops worn with brightly colored sports bras is a go-to workout outfit for fitness fashionistas. Layer warm clothes over lighter fabrics like light jackets and smooth leggings (with breathable mesh, of course) so you can peel off the layers as you start to work up a sweat indoors! Pair these layered looks with cool new kicks in bold colors and prints that are anything but your basic winter palette.

Parting Thoughts
W
ho enjoys waking up in the morning? How many people set their alarms to the last possible minute allowable to get to work
on time? And further, because “waking up” can be such a hurdle, how does this set your attitude and outlook for the rest of the day? Follow this morning ritual for a better, more fulfilling day and a healthier life. Wake up 45 minutes to an hour earlier than you usually do. It’s proven that the most successful people wake up before they must and have even more success when performing a consistent morning ritual. Let’s wind the alarm clock back a bit and apply these steps to guarantee more energy, a better outlook, and well-being: 1. EXERCISE 1-10 MINUTES
- This has tons of positive impacts on your conscious mind and gets you into a peak physical, emotional, and mental state. Examples: one-minute of jumping jacks, stretching or yoga, five-minute jog, etc. 2. MEDITATION 15-20 MINUTES
- This can be guided or focused meditation and will relieve you of stressors from the previous day, clear your subconscious, and prepare your mind for the day at hand. Phone apps are great for this (Omvana is one I recommend). 3. AFFIRMATIONS 5 MINUTES
The Morning Ritual MAKE 2017 YOUR BEST YEAR YET ARTICLE JIM BERGER
- Write down an affirmation that is specific to what you would like to accomplish in the short term (these are always in rough draft format, meaning you will be changing them once achieved or mastered). Be as specific as possible in terms of your goals. Include WHAT you will achieve, your WHY, obstacles you may face along the way, HOW you will overcome these obstacles, and WHEN you will accomplish this. 4. VISUALIZATION 5 MINUTES
- Visualize not just the image of success but FEELINGS. How will you feel having accomplished this goal in your affirmations, how will this make a difference in your life? 5. READING/SELF DEVELOPMENT 10 MINUTES - Read for ten minutes on a subject that will improve an area in your life. This could be career-focused or relationship based. If you read ten pages a day and did this for one year, that’s 3,650 total pages, equaling over 18, 200 page books - huge impact to personal potential! 6. APPLICATION 10 MINUTES
- Simply write down the take-aways from what you read and, if applicable, how you can implement it into a part of your day or life in general. With application of these steps into a morning ritual that AM alarm sound will soon associate a better feeling and subsequently increase positivity and productivity throughout your day. Don’t wait to start though, the best time to do anything is in the moment so “Do it now, there’s only so many tomorrows.” Jim Berger splits his time between personal training management and real estate - Fitness Director for Fitness Connection and REALTOR for The Tocado Realty Group, located in Ballantyne. He aspires to help all clients, in either avenue, in fulfilling their own goals and dreams. jimbergerrealestate.com Blog: charlotte-homes.net jamesberger025@gmail.com 34
