Prior to arriving at Hughes Floor Covering, we visited four different flooring stores. No one was able to adequately assist us. The sales associate at Hughes was more than accommodating. He was not only knowledgeable about our options, he gave suggestions, had personal experience in installing the flooring system and provided us with samples to take home. On our installation day, our order was on time and the installers were friendly and very competent. They ensured we were completely satisfied, respected our property and left the work area clean. They did what they said they would do in every phase of the process.” – Recent Customer

hile December is the month for holiday preparation and celebration, we never lose sight of the importance of family. This particular home is enriched with family heritage and heirlooms. And if those aspects don’t exemplify family enough then just the sight of cozy seating arrangements, a unique dining room fit for a big family feast, and the perfect kid-friendly bunk beds will surely do it. There is a popular saying that the heart of the home is the kitchen, but we could argue that this home’s coolest gathering place is the dining room. Not sure about you, but we can’t stop admiring this breathtaking space that literally floats within the trees. This unique space was an addition that transformed a normal dining area to a harmonious space between family and food with a fusion of nature. CONTINUED >

We loved that our client had personal items to add to the décor that were sentimental to her. We cherish antiques and try to incorporate these unique touches into our client’s home at their wish. This dining room is furnished with her mothers’ oushak rug, table and chairs and heirloom ginger jars. Throughout the home, but especially in the main living area, we kept the warm gold, gray and beige accents a theme to create a streamline look. The mixture of creams and light pops of color make this living space feel spacious and welcoming, even with various seating options. There is nothing like having everyone gathered in one room, experiencing the simple, yet most important joys of life. After spending time with family and reminiscing on Christmas’ past, the ideal late December night would be decorating cookies for Santa and hearing the pitter patter of footsteps running off to bed. Any kid would love a night-time story read from this beautiful wooden rocking chair then tiptoeing up the steps to this built in bunk bed. A child’s bedroom is a fundamental part of their life at any age; therefore we are thoughtful when designing the layout and decor of their special room. We like to style a kid’s room with unique touches that incorporate storage, convenience, and practicality with a fun twist. Family is a word that holds great significance in our hearts and our work. We strive to illuminate family in our clients’ homes and want them to call their home a sanctuary.

or many restaurants today, striking the perfect balance between having a successful business and being an active, valued member of their community is a virtually impossible task. In many cases, owners and staff must choose between the two, and in today’s increasingly demanding marketplace, the bottom line takes precedence every time. It’s simply the state of affairs in our post-recession economy. Those few local eateries that did survive the veritable famine of 2008-2009 are more aware of their overhead costs than they have ever been before. It has completely changed the way Americans dine, not always for the better, and many of us still pine for the days when regulars were known by name and the best local spots felt more like a refuge than anything else. Fortunately for residents and visitors of SouthPark, stepping into The Palm restaurant offers all of this and so much more. In fact, the team at The Palm in Charlotte can tell you a thing or two about staying true to the heart of their business under all types of circumstances. It has continued to thrive through several culture shifts and “foodie fads,” countless changes to the American business landscape, the Great Depression, and yes, the Great Recession. Now, as the restaurant’s 90th anniversary and 20th year as a Charlotte staple CONTINUED >

approaches, you can be sure you are getting the same superior food, service, and atmosphere that launched this restaurant to success all those years ago. As soon as you walk through the door of The Palm, you will pick up on the fun and friendly vibe of this food-lover’s paradise. Whether it’s the delicious aroma of chef-prepared meals, the signature caricatures that adorn the walls, or the way the staff appears genuinely excited to greet you, everything about The Palm says that your time there will be very well spent. You’ll be shocked to learn that this personable, welcoming establishment is part of a national chain, boasting several locations spread across many of the most vibrant cities in the United States.“I feel building relationships and knowing our guests by name is what separates us from our competitors here at The Palm,” says General Manager, Joey Profeta. Of course, this type of growth and staying power also requires a business to be flexible and willing to evolve with consumer demands. That being said, it stands to reason that certain things about The Palm are bound to have changed over the years. For example, the original restaurant, which was opened in Manhattan in 1926, was intended to be an Italian restaurant. It’s hard to believe, but what is now known as one of the top steakhouses in Charlotte did not even have steak on its original menu. Today, its meats are so meticulously selected that you will be truly hard-pressed to find a better steak anywhere else in the Queen City. You can also feel good knowing that your food has been responsibly sourced and prepared. The USDA prime beef that is served by The Palm is corn-fed and hand selected to satisfy the most discerning palate. Its lobsters come from Nova Scotia, where this crustacean is so superior it has become the very lifeblood of the local fishing communities. These naturally delectable staples and the expert hand of The Palm’s Executive Chef, Colin Johnson, come together in such a way that saves you from the sensory overload that has become such a standard part of the modern dining experience. So, whether you choose prime rib, a salad, or one of their decades-old Italian family recipes, you can be sure that you’re getting an honest, satisfying meal that has been expertly prepared in one of Charlotte’s most well-loved dining destinations. As The Palm looks forward to the next 90 years of serving Charlotte’s food-loving community, they have launched an exciting new menu that offers many of the same classic dishes, along with some new, creative recipes that will inevitably become just one more reason to love The Palm. You know the dream-- toes in the sand, a drink with a frilly umbrella in our hand and the sound of the surf in the background. There are good reasons why Caribbean beach vacations are so popular and, here in Charlotte, we are lucky these sea-side destinations are easily accessible by short plane rides. However, all beach resort vacations are not created equal! Understanding the myriad of choices and making a good decision for you and your family can prove daunting. One consideration is whether or not an all-inclusive resort is the best choice. In recent years, the all-inclusive offerings in the Caribbean have exploded. This vacation option is increasingly popular because of the convenience and riskfree budgeting it provides. All-inclusive resorts offer all meals, drinks and most activities for ONE inclusive price preventing any surprises during the vacation. The peace of mind this offers is invaluable to most travelers! But not all all-inclusive resorts 28

are created equal so proper planning is still crucial to a successful getaway. If you are a honeymooner, or looking for a romantic retreat, you may not want to choose a resort that caters to families. The reverse is also true, however, and if you are planning a multi-generational trip you will want ample kids activities and amenities. Many resorts blend the two indulgences well and have fabulous options for kids along with escapes for the adults. There is also a wide range of cuisine options available now. If good food and fine dining is important to you, then choose resorts offering a variety of specialty restaurants and diverse menus. The less expensive resorts tend to feature mostly buffet restaurants, but the 4 and 5 star properties have upped their game when it comes to dining and many foodies are pleasantly surprised at the gourmet offerings. A good, experienced travel professional can help match people with the best resort for their specific needs. There are lots of options available and its helpful to have someone that’s familiar with the choices help guide the buying process and truly make it a “worry-free” vacation.

TRAVEL TIP: Make sure you are

very clear about what your resort considers part of the “all-inclusive package you are purchasing. Does the bar include premium liquor? Are only non-motorized water sports included? Spa services, tours and excursions are generally extra as well. Checking the details before you leave will avoid any surprises!

y dogs love Blue Buffalo dog food. They cannot get enough of the stuff. I feel like I should have taken out stock in the company for how often I buy it. I mean have you seen the prices of good dog food lately? Heaven forbid you pick a breed that’s bigger than average. I have friends that get the fifty-pound bags a few times a month – seriously! I was on one of my routine dog food runs when it hit me – there are a ton of options to choose from these days. Even when you settle on a certain make or brand there always seems to be a new line that comes out that’s better than everything else that came before. It’s downright confusing! While I was hefting the usual thirty-pound blue and cream bag into my shopping cart I began to wonder, “Where did all these choices come from, anyway?” I couldn’t help but think to myself how, not too long ago, dog food was just that – dog food. The only real difference between brands that I could really remember was the color of the bag. What caused the change? Without thinking much further I walked my order to the cashier (along with a few peanut butter flavored treats) and waited my turn in line. The woman ahead of me was holding a seven week-old puppy along with a basket just full of new dog supplies. The cashier couldn’t help but ask about the cute little bull terrier she was holding (its

name was Bailey). The woman mentioned how overwhelmed she was in choosing her selections. The cashier then did what all good cashiers do and started suggesting things “all dog owners need”. When the conversation finally turned to dog food the answer to my earlier question practically smacked me across the face. “Make sure you buy the best dog food”, the cashier said, “the right nutrition not only helps your puppy live longer but also helps it have fewer health issues later on in life.” What so many pet owners these days have discovered is that real food leads to healthier, longer living pets. What I find so crazy is that these same owners, the same ones that buy the best dog food, continue to feed themselves “fake food”, “chemistry set nutrition”, and routinely expose themselves to harsh, toxic, and un-natural chemicals! Whatever is good for your pet probably is also good for you too! Don’t you, like your pet, want to live longer, look better, feel younger, and stay healthier longer? “Where do you start?” you might ask. That’s where I can help. We focus on health every single day in my office. We focus on your health. We start by feeding the body what it lacks. We give the body the building blocks to health. I’m routinely amazed at how healthy my patients are once they get started. Why not start right now?
