AROUND TOWN DISCOVERY PLACE UNVEILS NEW BRANDING INITIATIVE IN CELEBRATION OF 70 YEARS OF SCIENCE IN THE CAROLINAS Seventy years of science, exploration and wonder in Charlotte have a new look. Recently, Discovery Place, Inc. unveiled a new brand identity with new logos, websites and name changes. The rebrand launched in celebration of the organization’s 70th anniversary, and was formally presented at the organization’s One Night Wonder anniversary celebration in uptown Charlotte. The organization’s four regional museums – Discovery Place, Charlotte Nature Museum, Discovery

Place

KIDS-Huntersville

and

Discovery Place KIDS-Rockingham – as well as multiple education, professional development and community outreach programs are being integrated under one brand called “Discovery Place,” a unified organization that provides STEM education to the Carolinas. To provide greater clarity and connection to the whole organization, Discovery Place, the science museum at 301 N Tryon St., has been renamed Discovery Place Science; Charlotte Nature Museum at 1658 Sterling Road adjacent to Freedom Park is now Discovery Place Nature; and the two Discovery Place Kids museums in Huntersville and Rockingham will keep their names with some minor typeface

updates and new logos. “For 70 years, Discovery Place has been dedicated to fulfilling our community’s need for educational experiences in science, technology and nature, starting in 1946 when Charlotte Nature Museum first opened. Since then, we have grown to offer four distinct Museum experiences, multiple education and outreach programs and professional development training for educators throughout the region. We’ve expanded so broadly that our audiences were

10

having a hard time understanding the full scope of our work. Rebranding all of our efforts under one collective identity not only better reflects who we are, but also helps us more effectively communicate with our visitors and community members about what we do and how we serve them,” says Catherine Wilson Horne, president and CEO of Discovery Place. Each Museum’s logo was given a fresh, modern update, and a new logo was created to represent the whole Discovery Place organization. Discovery Place’s logo continues to pay homage to the impossible triangle, also known as the Penrose triangle. This optical illusion icon has represented the company for 35 years since Discovery Place Science first opened on N Tryon St in 1981. “We wanted to keep the impossible triangle at our core, but also represent how the organization has grown over the past 70 years. The new colored loop symbolizes all of the expanded initiatives and parts that make us whole,” said Debra Smul, Vice President, Marketing and Communication of Discovery Place. “By bringing our brands together, we want Discovery Place to be recognized as a unified educational experience that you can have at one of our Museums, in your school or out in the community.” Discovery Place will introduce its new identity to the public with an advertising campaign, We Wonder. Do You? Developed in collaboration with Charlotte creative agency Wray Ward, the campaign is centered on curiosity, encouraging people to wonder about the world around them and to use the lens of science to build understanding. The new campaign celebrates the human need to explore, investigate and ask questions to help interpret the world. Civic leaders and Discovery Place supporters got a first-hand look at the new brand at the organization’s anniversary celebration, One Night Wonder: An Event 70 Years in the Making. Visitorscanseethenewbrandrolledoutonnewly redesigned websites at DiscoveryPlace.org. Discovery Place collaborated with Charlotte digital marketing agency Union to create the fresh sites. Visitors will enjoy simplified navigation, filtered searches that customize the Museum experience for each guest’s interests and mobile optimization. November 2016 | South Charlotte Lifestyle

Ditch the Dull! SWELL DECOR ON DEFINING YOUR SPACE ARTICLE ANGIE PERRSON AND MERRIN LOWE

12

South Charlotte Lifestyle | November 2016

Your home isn’t a place where you simply exist; it’s a place where you will have vivid imagery for many years to come, where you and your family will create a safe haven. At Swell Décor, we are focused on designing your home as you have always imagined. Take in these rooms. You may think, “isn’t that swell” but don’t forget, these designs can be uniquely yours as well.

Interior design is defined by Google as “the art or process of designing the interior decoration of a room or building.” When defined in its most simplistic and generalized form interior design seems…well, quite dull. -Craziness!

Swell Décor interior design believes that interior design is ANYTHING but dull. As the co-founders of Swell Décor, we are grounded in our beliefs that design is best created with delicate, stylistic precision in collaboration with clients. CONTINUED >

Renovate & Refine

(CON TI N U ED)

This textured and timelessly modern home is family friendly without having to sacrifice design. At Swell Décor, we have numerous clients with young children that get in on the interior design fun as well. From family living spaces to unique play areas; we strive to make a home its own. We aren’t afraid to be bold with fabrics, art pieces, mirrors, etc., yet we don’t shy away from simple ways to maximize the space for functionality and fashion. In this Cotswold home in particular, every room was designed thinking “out of the box”. This dining area creates a focal point to the regal rug that ties in perfectly with the drapery. And the eye can’t ignore the relationship of dynamic textures between the dining table and chairs. There will be many special memories created around the holidays and on every day occasions in this unique dining room.

14

South Charlotte Lifestyle | November 2016

Thinking in a timely sense, where do you find yourself navigating to after partaking in a delicious meal? –The living room of course! And this home doesn’t have just one but two delightful spaces furnished for optimal relaxation. There is something about a warm mink colored sofa accompanied by a pair of Barcelona chairs that soothes the soul.

For a more relaxed eating space, this family can indulge in their favorite morning cereals or splurge on some midnight ice cream with a window view from the architectural wooden chairs. Or others may prefer to take in the views of home from the cozy window seats. The captivating light fixture is sure to brighten the room and create design conversation to top the room off.

Travel Destination ALASKAN PARADISE

ARTICLE RONI FISHKIN

WHATS THE BEST TIME FOR AN ALASKA VACATION? The tourist season in Alaska is short – primarily mid-May through mid-September. There are pros and cons to traveling in the early part of the season or waiting until fall. Weather, access to certain wildlife, etc. are all factors. An experienced travel professional can help you choose the right time to go.

16

South Charlotte Lifestyle | November 2016

The state of Alaska is unlike any other destination in the United States. A vacation to our 49th state offers untamed wilderness, breathtaking scenery and limitless adventure. Here are the top FIVE reasons travelers consider Alaska a must-see destination: Wilderness – Alaska is bigger than the 22 smallest states in the US all added together, yet it is home to just over 700,00 people. With only 20% of the state accessible by road, Alaska is so pristine and unusual. Where else can you truly feel like you are getting away from it all? Mountains – Alaska is home to 17 of the 20 tallest mountains in North America, including the big daddy of them all – Mt. McKinley – rising to a jaw-dropping, snow-capped 20,320 feet. Many vacationers enjoy seeing these mountains from the air – a “flightseeing” provides awesome panaromas….but the vistas are pretty spectacular from just about any vantage point! Glaciers - The stunning experience of walking on an icy glacier is a quintessential Alaskan activity. There are many that are accessible and

1

2

popular including more than 50 named glaciers in the must-visit Glacier Bay. Denali National Park – The park is Alaska’s most popular land attraction because it boasts so many of the state’s most famous sights: Mt McKinley, unspoiled wilderness and lots of wildlife. Make sure your trip to Alaska includes some time to hike and be adventurous on one of several trails available. Wildlife – Probably the biggest reason vacationers are drawn to an Alaska experience is the chance to see wildlife. From whales to bears, from moose to bald eagles – Alaska offers visitors a glimpse of these fabulous creatures in their natural habitat. And - There are SO many more reasons…cedar planked wild salmon (yum), tall tales of gold rushers, sales-tax-free shopping, totem poles from native cultures, deep sea fishing, great photography opportunities--the list is endless and so are the ways to visit Alaska. W

hen Thanksgiving rolls around, some of Cam Newton’s most memorable moments in Charlotte are off the field. “The holidays have always been a special time for my family and to share that with the Charlotte community is an opportunity I look forward to every year” says Cam Newton who’s annual Thanksgiving Jam, sponsored by the Cam Newton Foundation, serves 900 children and their families in conjunction with Second Harvest Food Bank. “It is a special event for us and the families,” says Kimberly Beal, Executive Director of the Cam Newton Foundation. “It’s an opportunity for us to use the power of the foundation to really provide a special evening for some of Charlotte’s most deserving families. The holidays are a big time for us.” The Thanksgiving Jam is one of several events the foundation runs throughout the year, all benefiting Charlotte families and organizations. “We really do believe using the power of sports and celebrity to impact social change is important,” says Beal. The foundation’s calendar is proof of the work it’s doing in the Queen City. Each December, Newton picks one day to surprise several Charlotte organizations with a donation meant to impact the community and schools. On Christmas Eve, the foundation will coordinate a special VIP experience for Levine Children’s Hospital families at the Panthers - Falcons game. Each summer, the foundation leads several football camps for local Charlotte student athletes. In June, the foundation hosts its annual charity weekend with the Kicking It with Cam Celebrity Kickball Tournament and Kids Rock Gala. Last year’s charity weekend raised nearly $1M dollars that went back to Charlotte organizations, including CharlotteMecklenburg Schools and Big Brothers Big Sisters. It’s obvious Beal keeps a busy calendar. (She’s the foundation’s only full-time employee). But, it’s that continuous focus that drives the foundation’s impact. “I know people likely have a perception of an athlete’s foundation. That the work is just for publicity,” says Beal who normally shies away from promoting the foundation’s work. “But, I can tell you that we truly are working to make an impact in this community by using Cam’s visibility to connect pivotal funds to organizations that make a difference.” Newton doesn’t lack for visibility. Indeed, the Charlotte media will clamor to cover his events this holiday, but it’s important to him that people know his foundation’s work is genuine. “I really appreciate what the people of Charlotte have done for me. They support me and my teammates by coming to the game, buying jerseys, and cheering every weekend. I want my foundation to be an avenue to make an impact and give back to a community that has done so much for me.” - Cam Newton November 2016 | South Charlotte Lifestyle

here is so much to be said for local businesses. Not only do they strengthen the local economy, but they also have a unique way of helping us forge lasting relationships with other members of our community. These are the connections that keep Charlotte alive; they preserve the vibrancy of this unique, historic city that we all love so much. One such local business, Master Fabrication, may fall into a niche that doesn’t often come to mind, but it provides a service that contributes to the overall aesthetic appeal of our Queen City. In fact, it’s likely that you’ve seen the work of Chris Crumpler on more than one occasion; ornamental metalwork is such an intrinsic part of our local scenery. It’s so much more than wrought iron fencing and staircases, however. Whether you are looking for a way to add visual appeal to your home or simply want to maintain or repair structures in your business, the residential and commercial metalworking services provided by Master Fabrication are sure to add that special touch that speaks to CONTINUED >

the elegant, formidable character of our southern lifestyle. These qualities are among the key features you’ll find in Crumpler’s work. After working as a welder and fabricator for over a decade with various other companies, he knew that Charlotte was the best and only place to lay the foundation for a metalworking business of his own. Of course, our community has offered tremendous support for his vision. Some would say that his creative and practical approach is the reason that his new venture has been so well received; we all love something that is as hard-wearing as it is beautiful. Others, however, will agree that his steadfast dedication to delivering the highest quality product at the most competitive price is what has made his business so successful. Whatever challenge you may be faced with, you can be sure that Crumpler is up to the task. While the majority of Chris Crumpler’s work is centered around staircase remodels and baluster replacement, his talents extend far beyond this. If you only need

something minor, such as an iron mailbox repair, or have become the victim of a do-it-yourself project that has gone awry, Master Fabrication has you covered. Perhaps most importantly is the personalized service that clients of this business receive. Chris personally handles every job that is undertaken by his business. Not only does this safeguard your home from the costly mistakes that are often made by subcontractors, but it also ensures that your project will be a masterful work of art. Chris Crumpler’s signature touch is a part of every single project. Master Fabrication works on jobs of all sizes and in all settings, including custom designs and mobile metalworking projects. If you have a specific design in mind, or you’ve grown tired of your home’s wooden balusters and would like to consider a more modern alternative, give Master Fabrication a call at 910.551.4257 to discuss your specific needs. HARVESTING HOPE LAKESIDE LUAU BENEFITS SHINING HOPE FARMS AND CELEBRATES HIPPOTHERAPY PARTICIPANT

ARTICLE JEAN PENNER | PHOTOGRAPHY SHARON BISHOP

O

n a beautiful summer evening dozens gathered at the incredible Mountain Island lake home of Jeff and Patty Mulloy to support Shining Hope Farms. Following the Luau theme for the gathering, H&M catering created hors d'oeuvres and desserts with a Polynesian flare. Our Shining Hope Farms’ Board Chair, Kari Pilbeam, gave an informative and moving presentation about the benefits of Hippotherapy, Therapeutic Horseback Riding, and the need for donations to provide these life changing services. Guests at the Luau also enjoyed the tranquil view of the lake and even went for pontoon boat rides. But the one who melted everyone’s hearts was Noah, one of our participants who attended the Luau and let us tell his story. Noah was born at 25 weeks and weighed 1 lb. 15 oz. Shortly after birth Noah had a stroke. He was diagnosed with prematurity, developmental delay, and significant gastro intestinal complications

as an infant, resulting in the need for a feeding tube. Not long after his second birthday, Noah began receiving Occupational Therapy services at Shining Hope Farms, which utilized Hippotherapy (from the Greek "hippo" meaning "horse”) as a treatment strategy. When Noah first began, he was unable to stand or walk on his own. Due to these impairments, Noah also had a difficult time interacting with his family and peers during play and was unable to feed himself. Noah is now five years old and has been receiving Occupational Therapy for 3 years. During that time Noah has improved his core strength, balance and normalized his tone allowing him to stand and take 10 – 20 steps with one hand assistance. These improvements have also enabled him to maintain his position on his horse. The horse that Noah rides for his treatment sessions is Captain Hook, or Cappy for short. Aside from riding Cappy, one of Noah’s favorite tasks at the farm is feeding Cappy a snack. This activity has led to Noah experiencing new textures, allowing him to expand his tolerance outside of the farm, especially when it comes to eating. Noah has gone from a minimal amount of food intake to now having 16 different food/ textures implemented in his diet. The result of this is that he no longer requires the feeding tube as his primary source of nutrition. 28

Beautiful smiles for everyone,

with the comforts of a spa.

Experience our massage chairs, heated neck pillows, and warm parrafin hand treatments!

Noah’s home life has improved as well as a result of his fine motor gains at Shining Hope Farms including the ability to grasp feeding utensils so that he can feed himself and color using crayons. Also as a result of his sensory improvements Noah has been able to enjoy the beach with his family and is no longer bothered by the sand. Noah’s mom says, “Coming to Shining Hope Farms to ride Cappy and to visit the wonderful staff is the highlight of Noah’s week. Noah was barely able to sit up on his own when he first came to the farm for Hippotherapy. Today because of Hippotherapy, his muscles are significantly stronger and he is cruising and learning to walk on his own. Peace surrounds our family as soon as we enter the farm. We are so grateful to have such a remarkable place for Noah to come to. He tells everyone he meets about the farm and Cappy. Noah would not be where is or who he is today without the people and horses of Shining Hope Farms.” We applaud Noah and all of our 160+ participants on their accomplishments, dedication, and hard work. If you would like to help children like Noah check out our website at ShiningHopeFarms.org to find out how you can make a difference. CHICKEN SOUP

FOR EVERY SOUL ARTICLE OCTAVIA DABNEY, GM SODEXO/CAROLINAS REHABILITATION NORTHEAST | PHOTOGRAPHY DEATRIC SMITH

A

s winter approaches we begin to add layers of warmth to what we choose to wear daily. Out come the hats, scarves and gloves. One of the most satisfying edible layers of warmth is the comfort of soup. There are many kinds of soups - broths and chowders are the most common with chicken noodle being the likely favorite. Everyone loves a good chicken noodle soup. Some are heartier and creamy in texture almost resembling a stew. Chicken noodle soup is also popular for its ability to balance an upset stomach and calming effect on cold symptoms. Soon to appear in winter is the excitement of the holidays where everyone enjoys all the pleasures of cake and pies, turkey and stuffing, but once the holidays are gone soup remains to accompany all through the rest of winter. Many restaurants and grocery stores offer several soups as a convenience item. Most restaurants purchase a pre-made item that is heated and poured into a kettle and everyone is aware of the many varieties of can choices high in sodium that can be chosen in the soup isle. There is nothing more satisfying than homemade soup and a trip to your local farmer’s market can make it all possible. There you will find all the fresh ingredients you need for mirepoix such as celery, carrots, and onions. Fresh herbs (preferably sage and thyme) should be added to the pot right at the end. The farmer’s market may also provide you with a fresh loaf of French bread to go along with your soup. Bon appetit’! Chef Tay Love people, Love Food. 34
