LIFESTYLE LETTER

A Fresh Start for Mind, Body & Spirit

January 2026 PUBLISHER

Candice Johnson | candice.johnson@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Ashley Hathaway | ashley.hathaway@citylifestyle.com

As we close the chapter on a season centered around giving to others, January invites us to shift that same generosity inward. It’s a time to reset, refocus, and rediscover what it means to truly take care of ourselves—mind, body, and spirit. Health and wellness aren’t resolutions we make once a year; they’re acts of intention we choose every day. And this month, we’re celebrating the many ways our community continues to inspire that journey. In this issue, we shine a light on local partners who are helping us start the year stronger, healthier, and more balanced. We begin with Dr. Zima of Sage Hormone Health, who shares how restoring internal balance can transform energy, sleep, and overall well-being—reminding us that feeling our best starts from within. Then we step inside The Smile Studio, where Dr. Burnham and her team demonstrate how dental care can be elevated into a personal, confidence-building experience that goes far beyond a routine visit. For those looking to nourish themselves with ease, we explore Custom Provisions, the husband-and-wife team redefining clean, nutritious eating with fresh, ready-to-go meals crafted to fit real-life schedules. And for a seasonal refresh, we sit down with Sherrie Esguerra, FNP-C, of Skin & Body Rx, who offers a smarter, more intentional approach to winter skincare— because healthy skin is an essential part of overall wellness. As you turn these pages, I hope you feel inspired to pause, breathe, and invest in you. Whether it’s through nutrition, self-care, restorative treatments, or simply making space for joy, may this year be one of renewed strength and meaningful well-being. Here’s to a healthy, empowered, and fulfilling start to 2026. With gratitude,

How Dr. B ur nh am and He r Team Tur n Ever y Visit Into a Per sonal, Elevated Exper ience

INSIDE THE SMILE STUDIO ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE SOCIAL EDIT CO. BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY The moment you step into The Smile Studio at 3134 W Carefree Hwy #9, Phoenix, AZ 85086, you notice it immediately: this isn’t your typical dental office. Sunlight streams through large windows, bouncing off soft neutral walls and modern artwork. Earth-toned chairs complement sleek, clean finishes, creating a space that feels both sophisticated and inviting. Even from the dentist chair, the boutique experience continues: a personalized welcome appears on the overhead TV, greeting each patient by name. Small touches—offering a cozy blanket, providing

headphones, or adjusting lighting—may seem minor, but they transform appointments into the most relaxed environment possible. It’s a space where every detail is intentional, and patients immediately feel seen, pampered, and at ease. Dr. Alexandra Burnham, the practice’s founder, is there to greet you with a warm smile, exuding both confidence and calm. Her journey to opening this boutique practice is rooted in passion, skill, and an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care. Originally from Arizona, Dr. Burnham earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine in Glendale, AZ. From the beginning, she was captivated by the transformative power of dentistry—not just the aesthetics, but the profound boost in confidence a beautiful, healthy smile can provide. After graduation, Dr. Burnham moved to Chicago for her husband’s medical training, spending five years refining her clinical expertise in general and cosmetic dentistry. A brief fellowship year in Fort Lauderdale expanded her perspective, but her heart remained in Arizona. In 2024, just one month before welcoming her baby boy, Roman, she fulfilled her lifelong dream: opening The Smile Studio, a place where patients feel truly cared for, understood, and confident. From the start, Dr. Burnham made her vision clear: every patient should leave feeling like more than just a dental chart—they should feel seen, valued, and genuinely cared for. “I wanted a practice where patients experience dentistry as personal, comfortable, and elevated,” she explains. That vision is immediately evident in the team she has assembled. Patient Coordinator Alana and Dental Assistant Gemeni form a tight, cross-trained duo that powers the practice. Their synergy is visible in every interaction: a gentle hand guiding a patient, a shared glance during a procedure that signals seamless teamwork, or laughter echoing through the office that feels authentic, not staged. “Patients can sense that we genuinely like each other,” Dr. Burnham says. “The ease and warmth in our interactions is intentional—it reflects the culture we’ve built.” This culture is collaborative, family-like, and uplifting. The team supports one another naturally, especially on the busiest days. “We step in before anyone has to ask,” Dr. Burnham notes. “If someone is running behind, another team member jumps in. We communicate constantly and stay positive,

reminding each other that our goal is the same: giving patients an exceptional experience.” It’s this dynamic that transforms even the most intimidating procedures into calm, personalized experiences. One patient undergoing full-mouth rehabilitation arrived understandably anxious. Rather than rushing, the team created a cozy environment, moving with choreographed precision and care. Breaks were offered, fears addressed, and reassurances given at every step. By the end of her appointments, the patient was not only relieved but so comfortable she requested Gemeni specifically for future visits—and gave both a heartfelt hug. Moments like these embody the philosophy of The Smile Studio: dentistry is about connection as much as treatment. Every detail in the patient journey is intentional. Before treatment begins, the team takes the time to learn about each patient’s life, preferences, and small comforts—favorite local restaurants, preferred blankets during procedures, or simply a chat about family. These gestures transform dental visits from clinical appointments into human connections. Patients notice. They feel acknowledged, understood, and genuinely cared for. The boutique feel extends beyond these personal touches. It’s in the way the team moves through the office with unspoken coordination, the soft lighting that soothes rather than startles, and even the curated music that plays gently in the background. The Smile Studio feels elevated yet approachable, luxurious yet warm—an intentional reflection of the culture Dr. Burnham has cultivated. “It doesn’t feel like we’re going into work,” she says. “It feels like a second home.” The energy and warmth of The Smile Studio doesn’t stop at the office doors. Their Instagram is equally entertaining and fun, offering glimpses into the team’s personalities, patient stories, and behindthe-scenes moments. Followers can experience the same laughter, camaraderie, and creativity that

make every in-office visit vibrant, welcoming, and unforgettable—a digital extension of the boutique experience. Follow them at @thesmilestudioaz to see the team in action. Leading a team like this requires intentionality and heart. Dr. Burnham emphasizes daily check-ins, celebrates wins both large and small, and addresses challenges with openness. She leads with gratitude, ensuring her team feels valued, motivated, and supported. “When a team genuinely cares for each other, it shows in the care they provide,” she explains. This approach fosters alignment and creates a ripple effect that patients feel immediately. Genuine kindness is the cornerstone of the practice. Skills can be taught, but empathy and warmth cannot. Alana and Gemeni demonstrate this daily, whether offering comfort during treatment, explaining procedures patiently, or remembering personal details about patients’ lives. These small but meaningful gestures make the experience memorable and affirm the boutique philosophy: patients are treated as people first, smiles second. The recent photoshoot that inspired this editorial captured the spirit of The Smile Studio beautifully. It wasn’t just about polished smiles—it was about energy, authenticity, and teamwork. Laughter shared between staff, the confident but gentle presence of Dr. Burnham, and the attentive gestures toward patients all came through vividly in the images. The photos tell a story: this is a practice where care is intentional, connection is paramount, and every smile reflects a team working in perfect harmony. Dr. Burnham’s clinical expertise complements this culture of care. Her focus spans full-mouth rehabilitation and cosmetic dentistry, helping patients regain confidence through natural-looking, customized smiles. She enjoys treating patients of all ages, often seeing grandparents, parents, and children in the same day—a continuity that allows for personalized care and lasting relationships. Each treatment plan is tailored not only CONTINUED >

to the patient’s oral health but also to their comfort and emotional well-being, further enhancing the boutique experience. Beyond the technical expertise and boutique environment, what truly defines The Smile Studio is the human connection at every level. Patients consistently remark on how the team remembers small details, anticipates needs, and creates an atmosphere of comfort and trust. From shared laughter to thoughtful gestures during procedures, the office operates like a well-coordinated family, where each member supports the other without hesitation. It’s this blend of skill, compassion, and genuine joy that transforms routine dental appointments into meaningful, memorable experiences— leaving patients not just with brighter smiles, but with hearts equally warmed. Looking forward, Dr. Burnham envisions thoughtful, sustainable growth. She plans to add talented team members who share the practice’s family-like culture and commitment to exceptional care. Education, personal development, and refinement of the boutique experience remain central to her vision. “Our goal as we grow is to remain warm, intentional, and relationship-driven,” she says. Every new addition to the team is carefully considered, ensuring alignment with the studio’s core values and the culture that makes it unique.

16

M UST SE E | HO ME SERVICE S

For Dr. Burnham, the ultimate reward is simple but profound: “When a patient gives me a hug at the end of treatment, I know we’ve made a difference—not just in their smile, but in their life.” That philosophy informs every aspect of the practice, from leadership style to daily interactions, and ultimately defines the patient experience. At The Smile Studio, dentistry transcends routine care. Patients are treated with thoughtful precision, and every touchpoint reflects the practice’s culture of compassion, collaboration, and intentionality. The boutique feel, the small but mighty team, and Dr. Burnham’s purposeful leadership converge to create a practice where patients feel at home, valued, and supported. Every smile, every conversation, every appointment is approached with the same care, ensuring that each experience is not only successful but meaningful. The photoshoot, the office ambiance, and the team’s visible connection all tell a story: The Smile Studio is not just about dentistry—it’s about people, relationships, and genuine human care. From the moment you step into the office, it’s clear that Dr. Burnham’s vision has been realized: a space where expertise meets empathy, and every patient leaves with more than just a smile—they leave with their confidence restored, and the rare feeling of being cared for with genuine compassion.

RESTORING BALANCE With Dr. Zima THE SAGE HORMONE HEALTH FOUNDER ANSWERS THE TOP QUESTIONS PATIENTS ASK ABOUT HORMONES AND WHOLE-BODY BALANCE.

Dr. Viva Zima, DNP, FNP-C, is a board-certified family nurse practitioner, hormone specialist, and founder of Sage Hormone Health in Anthem, Arizona. Originally from Toronto, Canada, she moved to the Arizona sunshine and now blends science-based and holistic care with a highly personalized, direct-pay approach. As a clinician, faculty member, wife, and mother, she’s seen how often hormonal imbalances impact energy, sleep, weight, and overall wellbeing. Her root-cause care attracts women and men who’ve felt overlooked in traditional systems. Here, Dr. Zima answers the top five questions she’s most often asked as a hormone expert.

Q. What are the symptoms of hormone imbalance? A. You may notice the effects of hormonal shifts before you ever see a lab result. Hormones influence everything from energy and mood to sleep and weight. When levels change—during perimenopause, menopause, thyroid changes, low testosterone, or even seasons of high stress—you may experience fatigue,

“It’s always important to start with the basics: adequate calories, daily movement, hydration, and restorative sleep” 20

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

irritability, poor sleep, weight gain, brain fog, or changes in motivation. These are often your body’s early signals that your hormones need attention.

Q. Why am I so tired all the time? A. You might feel tired for reasons that go beyond lifestyle. It’s always important to start with the basics: adequate calories, daily movement, hydration, and restorative sleep. If those foundations are strong but fatigue continues, hormones may be playing a role. Low thyroid function, low testosterone, cortisol imbalance, or disrupted sleep cycles can significantly drain your energy. Once the underlying hormonal pattern is corrected, energy often returns more consistently and naturally.

Q. Do hormones affect my mood? A. You may notice shifts in your mood even when life feels “normal.” Beyond everyday stressors, foundational hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone influence the brain chemicals responsible for mood, focus, motivation, and emotional steadiness. When these hormones fluctuate, it’s common to feel irritable, anxious, low, or not quite yourself. While coping skills and behavioral health strategies can help, rebalancing your hormones often makes those tools more effective—restoring clarity, calm, and emotional resilience.

Q. Why am I gaining weight even though I’m doing everything right? A. You may be doing all the right things and still not seeing progress. Hormones play a key role in metabolism, muscle maintenance, and how your body stores fat. Shifts in thyroid function, insulin, or cortisol can slow weight loss or even trigger weight gain despite healthy habits. Addressing hormonal imbalances—rather than simply pushing harder—often unlocks progress and makes weight loss feel possible again.

Q. How do I balance my hormones naturally? A. You can create more hormonal balance by focusing on consistent daily habits first. Quality sleep, nutrient-dense meals, daily movement, hydration, and stress management lay the foundation for stable cortisol, insulin, and thyroid levels. Once these basics are in place, targeted hormone therapy or high-quality supplements can be more effective—helping you optimize long-term hormonal balance.

A Smarter Approach to Seasonal Skincare A Q&A WITH SHERRIE ESGUERRA, FNP-C

About the Founder For more than a decade, Sherrie Esguerra, MSN, FNP-C, has blended medical expertise with a passion for natural, confidence-building aesthetics. What began as a solo practice has grown into Skin & Body Rx—a modern, multi-room med spa rooted in education, trust, and patient-centered care—which celebrated its grand opening on November 8th. Sherrie’s philosophy is simple: aesthetics should elevate, not alter. Every plan focuses on safety, subtle enhancement, and long-term skin health over quick fixes or trends. Today, Skin & Body Rx is home to a team of highly trained aesthetic professionals who share her commitment to evidence-based treatments and personalized care. Their mission is to help every patient feel confident, empowered, and truly seen. With a loyal community and growing reputation for excellence, Sherrie and her team are redefining what elevated, ethical medical aesthetics look like in Arizona.

Q: YOU OFTEN SAY “YOUR SKIN HAS SEASONS TOO.” WHAT DOES THAT REALLY MEAN? A: Your skin changes throughout the year just like the environment. In Arizona, intense sun, dry air, and temperature swings affect hydration, oil production, sensitivity, and texture. When skin suddenly feels dry, oily, irritated, or dull, it usually isn’t “acting up”—it’s responding to stress and asking for a different approach. Q: WHY DOES ARIZONA’S CLIMATE AFFECT SKIN SO DRAMATICALLY? A: Our climate is extremely harsh. High UV exposure accelerates collagen breakdown, pigmentation, and visible aging.

ARTICLE BY ASHLEY HATHAWAY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SKIN & BODY RX

24

S KIN CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Lack of humidity weakens the skin barrier, so moisture evaporates quickly and skin becomes dehydrated or reactive, sometimes overproducing oil to compensate. Combined with indoor heating and year-round sun, this creates chronic dryness, inflammation, and premature aging. Q: SHOULD SKINCARE ROUTINES CHANGE WITH THE SEASONS? A: Yes. Just like your wardrobe, your routine should shift. Arizona summers call for lightweight hydration, antioxidants, and strong SPF. Fall focuses on barrier repair and gentle exfoliation after months of sun. Winter requires richer moisturizers and hydration boosters. Spring is ideal for brightening and collagen-stimulating treatments that refresh the complexion. Q: HOW DOES SEASONAL STRESS CONTRIBUTE TO VISIBLE AGING? A: Environmental stress often ages skin faster than time. Constant battles with dryness, UV exposure, and barrier disruption accelerate collagen and elastin loss. That shows up as dullness, uneven tone, lines, and texture changes. Seasonal treatments— hydrating facials, peels, barrier-repair therapies, and collagen-boosting services— help counter this stress and noticeably slow visible aging. Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD SOMEONE UPDATE THEIR SKINCARE PLAN? A: I recommend updating every three to four months, or once each season. Skin needs shift quickly in Arizona. Seasonal evaluations let us assess hydration, barrier strength, pigmentation, inflammation, and how products are performing. A routine that worked months ago may not fit now. Adjusting regularly keeps results consistent and prevents stagnation.

“Skincare should elevate, not alter. When you adapt with the seasons, your skin stays balanced, resilient, and naturally radiant year-round.”

“Your skin is constantly communicating with you. When you understand how Arizona’s seasons impact hydration, sensitivity, and aging, you can finally choose treatments and products that support your skin instead of overwhelm it—and the long-term results are transformative.”

Q: WHAT DOES A SEASONAL SKIN PLAN LOOK LIKE AT SKIN & BODY RX? A: Every plan is customized. During a consultation, we look at lifestyle, skin type, concerns, and environmental exposure. Then we build a seasonal roadmap with in-office treatments and at-home products tailored to Arizona’s climate. Patients might get hydrating and antioxidant support in summer, pigment correction in fall, barrier repair and biostimulators in winter, and collagen-boosting services in spring. Q: WHAT’S THE BIGGEST BENEFIT OF EMBRACING SEASONAL SKINCARE? A: Consistency and confidence. When you adapt with the seasons, your skin stays more balanced instead of constantly cycling through irritation and recovery. You see fewer flare-ups, better hydration, smoother texture, and more predictable treatment results. It’s a preventative, long-term approach that strengthens the skin and helps you feel in control year-round. Skin health isn’t a one-season project—it’s an ongoing dialogue between you, your environment, and the experts guiding your skin through each shift. At Skin & Body Rx, Sherrie and her team are dedicated to personalized care and results that honor your natural beauty. U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1,

“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
