Our Women’s Issue

TRAIN SMARTER, NOT HARDER. FITNESS COACH JENNIFER BAIRD SHARES FIVE EVERYDAY HABITS THAT QUIETLY SABOTAGE PROGRESS.

We are incredibly honored to be named Best Salon in Somerset Hills for 2026. Thank you to our amazing guests and community for your continued support and trust in Beautique Hair Design Salon & Spa. It is our passion to create a warm, welcoming space where you can relax, be cared for, and enjoy beautiful hair, glowing skin, and a little time just for you. We are so grateful to share this recognition with the wonderful guests who make what we do so special.

Across Every Stage

I can always count on two things on Mother’s Day: my girls getting me Reese’s Cups as a gift—they know they are my favorite—and then eating them all before I get one. I should probably start hiding the candy, but at this point, it feels like part of the tradition. That is motherhood. It is never just about you, even when it is supposed to be. Still, I would not have it any other way.

In this month’s issue, we are celebrating women in different stages of life, and I love how that comes through in stories that feel both aspirational and grounded. Turn to page 32 for our cover feature on Jennifer Baird of Infinitive Fitness Club, who breaks down five common behaviors that quietly hold people back from making real fitness progress. What stands out most is how actionable her approach is—it is not about doing more, but about doing the right things consistently.

Turn to page 20 for “Stronger With Time,” where Claudia Tamas, a physical therapist specializing in women’s health, explains why bone health and strength training matter much earlier than most women realize. It is one of those topics many of us do not think about until we have to, and her perspective makes it clear why prevention can make all the difference.

That sense of timing and perspective carries into our Somerset Hills bride feature on page 48. There is something timeless about weddings in this region, from the historic estates to the natural beauty that surrounds them. It is a reminder that every stage of life brings something different—and something worth celebrating.

And because taking care of yourself shows up in different ways, turn to page 42 for our feature on Bellezza Si. Caterina Castaldo has built her business around expertise, trust and truly personalized care—something that feels increasingly rare and incredibly valuable.

We are also proud to celebrate our Readers’ Choice: Ladies Edition, highlighting the local businesses our community trusts for beauty, wellness and selfcare. These are the places that help women feel like themselves—on their best days and the days they need it most. For future categories and voting, follow us at @bridgewater_somerset_hills.

This May, no matter what stage of life you are in—whether you are sharing your candy or finally enjoying it yourself—I hope you feel appreciated in all the ways that matter.

BECKY HILLYARD

From Side Hustle to Style Empire

The power of taste, trust, and the courage to “just start.”

She didn’t have a business plan, a media budget, or even a name anyone could pronounce. What Becky Hillyard had was taste, a young family, and the instinct to just start. Today, her lifestyle brand Cella Jane commands an audience the size of Vogue’s, she’s nine collections strong with Splendid, and she’s built it all while raising three kids — refusing to sacrifice one for the other. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Becky shares what it really takes to build a brand, a career, and a life you love. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full conversation.

Q: WHEN DID YOU KNOW CELLA JANE WAS MORE THAN A HOBBY?

A: Two moments. Women started emailing me saying they bought something I recommended and felt amazing — asking me to help them find a dress for a wedding. That felt incredible. Then I looked at my affiliate numbers for one month and realized I could cover our mortgage. I thought, I can actually do this. I never set out to build a business. I started it because I genuinely loved it.

Becky in Splendid x @CellaJaneBlog Spring 2026 Collection

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST RISK YOU EVER TOOK WITH THE BRAND?

A: Designing my own collection. It’s easy to point at items on a website and say I love these. But to create something from scratch, put your name on it, and wait to see if people connect with it — that’s terrifying. I had an incredible partner in Splendid, and women loved the pieces. It was the biggest risk and the biggest accomplishment.

Q: HOW HAS INFLUENCER MARKETING CHANGED SINCE YOU STARTED?

A: When I started, brands didn’t know whether to take it seriously. Now it’s a legitimate line item in their marketing budgets — sometimes bigger than TV. Because what we’ve built is trust. People trust a real recommendation from someone they follow far more than a commercial. There’s no question about it now.

Q: YOU’RE A MOM OF THREE RUNNING A FULL BRAND. WHAT DOES YOUR DAY ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

A: I try to get up at five and not hit snooze — that first hour before the house wakes up is the most productive, most peaceful hour of my day. Then it’s all hands on deck with the kids and school drop-off. After that I work — planning content, connecting with my team, editing. After pickup, the day shifts completely and it’s all about them. I’ve learned to protect both halves fiercely, because both matter.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BUILD SOMETHING OF THEIR OWN BUT KEEPS WAITING?

A: Don’t wait. Don’t wait for the perfect camera, the right strategy, or enough followers. We find every excuse to stay comfortable. Just start, be consistent, and be authentically yourself. The right people will find you — and they’ll stay.

This conversation is just the beginning. Becky goes deeper on the risks that almost stopped her, the design process behind her latest Splendid collection, and what she’d tell her 2012 self today. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle Podcast.

THE NEW STANDARD OF TUNA

A fresh spring take on tuna, perfect for Mother’s Day entertaining

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

When I was a kid, tuna meant one thing: a can mixed with mayonnaise, maybe some diced onion and celery, served between slices of white bread. It was simple, nostalgic and, in hindsight, surprisingly satisfying.

The tuna salad sandwich, an American staple since the late 19th century, still holds its place in many households. But today, canned tuna has largely been eclipsed by fresh tuna, prized for its rich flavor, meaty texture and versatility.

Tuna is also one of the most consumed fish in the world. It is high in protein, low in fat and rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Its clean flavor and firm texture make it equally suited for raw preparations and high-heat cooking, where it develops a caramelized crust while staying tender inside.

Here are two ways to prepare it: fresh and refined, yet approachable.

TUNA TARTARE

Ingredients:

• 1 lb sushi-grade tuna, finely chopped

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 1 tsp chives

• Zest of ½ lemon

• Zest of ½ lime

• Salt and pepper, to taste

• Seaweed salad (store-bought)

Method:

Chill a mixing bowl for 10 minutes. Add tuna and gently fold in remaining ingredients, except salt and pepper. Season to taste. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve, up to 30 minutes.

AVOCADO MOUSSE

Ingredients:

• 2 avocados

• ½ jalapeño, diced

• 1 tbsp lemon juice

• ¼ cup red onion, diced

• ½ tsp cilantro, finely chopped

• Salt and pepper, to taste

Method:

Blend all ingredients until smooth and airy. Refrigerate until serving.

PONZU SAUCE

Ingredients:

• 3 tbsp soy sauce

• 1 tbsp rice vinegar

• 1 tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tbsp lime juice

• 1 tsp mirin

• ½ tsp grated ginger

• ½ tsp honey or sugar

Method:

Whisk until combined. Chill until ready to use.

Assembly:

Divide tartare into four portions and shape into rounds. Place on plates, top with avocado mousse and a small amount of seaweed salad. Spoon ponzu around the plate.

GRILLED TUNA AND SHRIMP GRILLED SHRIMP

Tuna’s steak-like texture also makes it a natural substitute in a lighter take on surf and turf, paired here with grilled shrimp.

TUNA STEAK

Ingredients:

• 3 tbsp soy sauce

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil

• 1 tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tbsp rice vinegar

• 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced

• 1 tsp red pepper flakes

• 1 tsp black pepper

• Zest of 1 lemon

Method:

Whisk marinade ingredients. Coat tuna steaks and marinate for 30 minutes. Grill over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium-rare.

Ingredients:

• 1½ lbs large shrimp, peeled and deveined

• 3 tbsp olive oil

• 2 tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tbsp lime juice

• 3 garlic cloves, minced

• 1 tsp smoked paprika

• ½ tsp coriander

• ½ tsp red pepper flakes

• 1 tsp kosher salt

• ½ tsp black pepper

• 2 tbsp parsley, chopped

Method:

Whisk marinade ingredients. Toss shrimp to coat and marinate for 10 to 15 minutes. Grill over high heat for 1½ to 2 minutes per side, until just cooked.

To Serve:

Place a shrimp skewer over each tuna steak and finish with fresh parsley.

Next-Day Tip:

Leftover tuna can be sliced thin for a sashimi-style dish or added to a Niçoise salad. Shrimp works well in a light citrus salad or served in avocado halves.

STRONGER WITH TIME

DR. CLAUDIA TAMAS ON RETHINKING BONE HEALTH BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE

Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease. For many women, the first sign is not a warning but a fracture. By the time a routine bone scan confirms significant bone loss at age 65, years of rapid decline may have already occurred.

For Claudia Tamas, PT, DPT, RN, BSN, CSCS, director of women’s health at Natural Medicine and Rehabilitation in Somerset, that reality is what drives her work.

“My commitment to women’s health began during my clinical rotations in long-term care,” she says. “I saw firsthand how frailty and loss of independence affect quality of life. That experience solidified my belief that the most meaningful impact happens in prevention, long before functional decline.”

WHY TIMING MATTERS

National guidelines typically recommend DXA bone density screening beginning at age 65. But biologically, bone loss accelerates much earlier.

Women lose about 15% of their bone mass during the menopausal transition and the decade that follows due to declining estrogen levels. For women who enter menopause with already low bone reserves, the rapid loss can significantly increase fracture risk.

“The timing of screening does not align with the biology of bone loss,” Tamas shares. “If DXA were used as a true preventive tool, it would need to be recommended and reimbursed much earlier.”

Without early identification, many women remain unaware of their risk until osteoporosis is already present.

WHO IS MOST AT RISK

Risk factors for osteoporosis begin accumulating decades before a diagnosis. Nutritional deficiencies, a history of eating disorders, menstrual dysfunction, certain medications, hormonal imbalances and a sedentary lifestyle all influence peak bone mass and long-term skeletal resilience.

Strength training plays a critical role.

“Many women believe walking improves bone density,” Tamas notes. “While walking has cardiovascular benefits, it does not provide the mechanical load necessary to stimulate new bone formation.”

Research consistently shows that high-intensity resistance and impact training are required to meaningfully influence bone density. Muscle strength, balance and power are equally important in reducing fracture risk.

Strong muscles stabilize joints, lower fall risk and help absorb forces that would otherwise be transmitted to bone. Women with greater muscle mass and strength also recover more quickly after fractures and maintain higher levels of independence.

A SHIFT IN TREATMENT

Osteoporosis care has evolved significantly in recent years. Evidence-based exercise interventions are now recognized as therapeutic tools rather than optional recommendations.

Tamas was among the first in the United States to implement the ONERO model, a program based on high-intensity resistance and impact training supported by clinical research. The approach has demonstrated improvements in bone density, strength, balance and overall functional capacity.

The field is also increasingly recognizing the role of menopausal hormone therapy in preventing and reversing bone loss for appropriate candidates. At the same time, clinicians are expanding beyond a one-size-fits-all model.

At Natural Medicine and Rehabilitation, Tamas works within an interdisciplinary framework that evaluates bone health across three domains: nutritional and metabolic, mechanical and stress-related.

Patients undergo comprehensive assessments that include strength and balance testing, evaluation of hormonal and inflammatory markers, micronutrient analysis and lifestyle review. The goal is to identify root contributors to bone loss and design personalized interventions.

“Osteoporosis is not just about bone density,” Tamas explains. “It is about muscle preservation, metabolic health, hormonal balance and long-term functional resilience.”

BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER SZTYBEL - THAT WERKS

WARNING SIGNS WOMEN SHOULD NOT IGNORE

Subtle musculoskeletal changes may signal declining bone and muscle integrity. A slumped posture, difficulty climbing stairs, relying on hands to rise from a chair, decreased grip strength or inability to balance on one leg for 10 seconds can all indicate increased fracture risk.

“These are not just age-related inconveniences,” Tamas emphasizes. “They are clinically meaningful indicators of muscle weakness and impaired stability.”

Early recognition allows for intervention before a fracture occurs.

ONE POWERFUL ACTION

If there is one action Tamas wishes more women would take earlier, it is strength training.

“Strength training is arguably the most powerful lifestyle intervention for preserving lifelong bone and muscle health,” she shares.

It prevents sarcopenia, enhances spinal stability, improves balance and supports metabolic function. Ideally, women should begin strength training in adolescence and continue throughout adulthood.

“If we treated strength training as a standard preventive practice, like dental care, we would dramatically reduce rates of osteoporosis and frailty,” she says.

LOOKING AHEAD

Emerging osteoporosis care is moving toward earlier identification, targeted high-intensity exercise and whole-person evaluation rather than relying solely on medication or late-stage screening. The growing emphasis on muscle health reflects a broader understanding that fracture prevention extends beyond bone density alone.

For women navigating midlife and beyond, the message is clear: bone health is not something to address after a diagnosis. It is something to build long before.

FINDING PEACE

After TRAUMA

“HEALING IS NOT LINEAR. IT TAKES TIME, PATIENCE AND THE RIGHT SUPPORT.”
—SHEILA REINOSO-JIMENEZ, LPC, ACS

As awareness grows around the connection between physical and mental health, therapies that support both are gaining renewed attention. One of them is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, commonly known as EMDR.

HOW EMDR HELPS PEOPLE PROCESS TRAUMA AND MOVE FORWARD

Sheila Reinoso-Jimenez
AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CAMRYN FONTANA

Sheila Reinoso-Jimenez, LPC, ACS, founder and owner of Healing Pathways Counseling Center in Basking Ridge, says EMDR offers a structured, researchbacked approach to processing trauma and other distressing life experiences.

Reinoso-Jimenez is also an EMDRcertified consultant through the EMDR International Association and has worked with clients navigating a wide range of emotional challenges.

At its core, EMDR is designed to help difficult memories feel less overwhelming over time. The therapy uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, alternating tapping or tones played in alternating ears, while a person focuses on aspects of a distressing memory. This process supports the brain’s natural ability to reprocess experiences in a healthier way.

“The goal is not to erase memories,” Reinoso-Jimenez explains, “but to change how they are stored and experienced in the body and mind.”

Trauma can disrupt the way the brain processes and stores information. When experiences remain unresolved, the emotions connected to them can resurface long after the event has passed, often triggered by seemingly unrelated situations. EMDR works to help clients process those memories so they feel less intense and more integrated, allowing individuals to feel safer and more grounded in the present.

This approach is one reason EMDR resonates with many people. Unlike some traditional talk therapies, it does not require clients to repeatedly describe traumatic events in detail. Instead, the focus is on processing those experiences within a structured and supportive framework, emphasizing emotional regulation, coping strategies and readiness.

EMDR treatment unfolds in eight phases, beginning with history-taking and

preparation. During these early stages, therapists help clients build coping skills and establish a sense of stability before moving into deeper work. From there, therapist and client identify specific memories to target, reprocess them and address any lingering emotional or physical responses. Sessions also include grounding techniques and ongoing evaluation to track progress and ensure clients feel supported throughout the process.

Reinoso-Jimenez notes that misconceptions about EMDR are common. Some people view it as a quick fix, while others assume they must relive every detail of their trauma for it to be effective. In reality, she says, the process is highly individualized and moves at a pace that prioritizes safety, trust and the client’s comfort level.

For individuals who have not found the relief they hoped for through more traditional approaches, EMDR may offer another path forward. It is also often used alongside other therapeutic methods, creating a more comprehensive approach to healing.

Beyond therapy sessions, ReinosoJimenez emphasizes the importance of everyday practices that support mental well-being. Journaling, regular exercise, self-care routines and maintaining a strong support system can all play a role in helping individuals manage stress and build resilience over time.

“Healing is not linear,” she says. “It takes time, patience and the right support.”

With the guidance of a trained professional, EMDR can help individuals process painful experiences, regain a sense of control and move forward with greater clarity and confidence. For many, it offers not just relief from past trauma, but a renewed sense of possibility for the future.

ROOTED IN RADIANCE

HOW GLOW FROM WITHIN TEA IS BREWING A WELLNESS MOVEMENT

What began as a lifelong routine has grown into a purpose-driven wellness brand rooted in culture, community and care.

Basking Ridge resident Sarai DeLeon is the founder of Glow From Within, a specialty tea company that blends Colombian home-remedy traditions with modern formulation and intentional sourcing. Launched in January 2025, the brand reflects more than two decades of personal tea study and daily practice, along with DeLeon’s professional background in marketing and brand development.

In addition to leading her tea company, she supports marketing and brand efforts for her husband Travis’ business, Sparkle Floors & Carpet, and credits his steady support as a driving force behind the brand’s launch and growth.

Sarai DeLeon
VibranTEA and hiBLISScus

“Tea has been part of my life for more than 20 years,” DeLeon says. “Growing up in a Colombian household, tea was how we soothed discomfort, supported our bodies and took care of each other.”

That foundation shaped Glow From Within’s mission: to create functional, flavorful blends that support everyday wellness while encouraging people to slow down and reconnect with themselves.

TRADITION MEETS

INTENTIONAL FORMULATION

Each Glow From Within blend starts with ingredients tied to traditional herbal use and cultural practice. DeLeon shares she researches plant properties and historical applications before finalizing any formula. She is also pursuing herbalism certification to deepen her technical understanding of herbs and holistic wellness.

Her first blend, hiBLISScus, centers on hibiscus, a botanical widely used in Latin American traditions. After experimenting with combinations at home, she developed a formula that balances hibiscus with spices, fruits and botanicals to soften its tartness while preserving its character.

A second blend, VibranTEA, is built on green tea and includes botanicals such as calendula, nettle leaf, licorice root and rose petals, along with tropical fruit notes. The goal, she emphasizes, was to create a smoother, more approachable green tea experience without added sweeteners.

“I wanted blends that taste good as they are,” DeLeon says. “No sugar, no extras required. Just a balanced, enjoyable cup.”

DeLeon began by hand-blending loose-leaf teas before partnering with a New York manufacturer to scale production while maintaining ingredient standards and certifications. She continues to experiment with new formulations and is always working on developing new brews that reflect both tradition and innovation.

EFFORTLESS BREWING FOR BUSY LIVES

While she values loose-leaf tea, DeLeon designed the retail line around convenience. Glow From Within uses plant-based, biodegradable tea bags made with polylactic acid derived from renewable sources, rather than conventional plastic-based sachets.

She calls the approach “effortless brewing,” built for people who want quality and function without added steps.

“Wellness should fit into your life,” DeLeon notes. “It should not feel complicated.”

Looking ahead, DeLeon is expanding beyond tea blends and will begin offering custom teapots along with tea cups and saucers, creating a more elevated, at-home tea experience that reflects the brand’s aesthetic and intention.

A FAMILY AND COMMUNITY BRAND

Glow From Within is also a family-supported venture. DeLeon works closely with her husband and shares the power of consistent support at home has been essential to building the brand. She credits Travis as a key part of the company’s foundation, from operational support to day-to-day encouragement behind the scenes.

Her parents’ influence is central to the company’s story. Her mother, Sara Nuñez, founder of the Dream to Succeed Foundation, encouraged her entrepreneurial goals and purpose-driven leadership. Her father, Rodolfo Espinosa, a wood artist, modeled discipline and creativity through his craft.

“From my mother, I learned belief and leadership. From my father, I learned work ethic and creativity,” DeLeon says. “Glow From Within carries both.”

The brand has established early retail placement across northern New Jersey, including: Rebecca’s Collection in Bernardsville, BHome in Bernardsville, Blue Cafe in Basking Ridge, Soho Nails in Bernardsville, Cryo Contouring Studio in Bernardsville, East Coast Organic Coffee Bar in Rockaway, Allison Handler Design Studio in Ridgewood and Cris Correa Esthetics in Wharton. Direct online sales are also available at glowfromwithintea.com

MORE THAN TEA—A WELLNESS PHILOSOPHY

At the center of the brand is a guiding phrase, “Rooted in Radiance,” defined by DeLeon as staying grounded in identity, purpose and authenticity while cultivating inner strength and self-respect.

She describes each cup as a reset moment, a daily pause that supports both physical and emotional well-being.

Glow From Within is also launching a monthly “Moment of Peace” initiative, donating tea to community-serving professionals, including teachers, nurses, first responders and health care workers, as a gesture of appreciation and stress relief.

LOOKING AHEAD

Future plans include additional blends focused on sleep, liver support and stress balance, along with expanded wholesale partnerships with cafes, spas, boutiques and hotels. DeLeon is also developing pop-up wellness events featuring tea mocktails, collaborative tastings and local business partnerships.

“Glow From Within is more than tea,” she explains. “It is tradition, education, creativity and community coming together. It is a reminder that your glow starts inside.”

Readers can follow @glowfromwithintea for updates and ordering information. The company is also offering a SOMERSET code for 20% off orders of two or more teas through May 31.

For a women-focused issue centered on purpose, partnership and well-being, the message is simple and steeped in intention: wellness can begin with something as small and as powerful as a daily cup.

5 BEHAVIORS THAT Sabotage FITNESS PROGRESS

Evidence-based lessons from my 7,000 hours of coaching clients.

After more than 7,000 hours coaching clients over the past several years, I’ve gained a powerful insight: Most people do not struggle to make fitness progress because they lack motivation. They struggle because of a handful of everyday behaviors that quietly undermine their efforts.

Most people are genuinely trying to do the right things. But old habits, fear of injury and misunderstandings about how the body works can still hold them back.

This is where guided training environments, whether personal training, small group sessions or structured classes, can make a meaningful difference. Having expert coaching, accountability and proper programming helps eliminate many of the common mistakes people make on their own.

The good news is that once people identify these behaviors, the solutions are often simpler than they expect.

Here are five patterns I see most often, along with practical ways to overcome them.

THE UNDERHYDRATED LIFTER

I had a rock-star client who seemed to be doing everything right. She strength trained consistently, increased her weights over time and ate enough protein to support muscle growth. Yet week after week, her body composition scans showed no increase in muscle.

Eventually, we discovered the issue: She was starting every workout dehydrated. After adjusting her hydration routine, her next body composition scan showed a noticeable increase in muscle.

Muscle is made up largely of water, and hydration plays an important role in the cellular environment where muscle repair occurs. Dehydration can shrink muscle cells and shift the body toward protein breakdown rather than protein synthesis.

Hydration may seem like a small detail, but it plays a major role in exercise performance, recovery and the body’s ability to respond to strength training.

In a coached setting, whether one-on-one or in a small group, trainers often reinforce these habits, ensuring clients show up prepared to perform.

What you can do: • Drink 16 to 24 ounces of water in the two hours before exercise. • Use a measured water bottle to track intake. • Pair hydration with a daily routine, such as your commute or morning routine. • For teens and athletes, send them out the door with a full bottle and one simple rule: Finish it before practice begins.

Sometimes the smallest habit creates the biggest change.

THE MORNING COFFEE MISTAKE

Another client struggled with fat loss despite exercising regularly and building impressive strength. After joining our perimenopause program, she began wearing a continuous glucose monitor and discovered an unexpected pattern.

Her sweetened coffee creamer, consumed first thing in the morning before eating anything else, caused her blood sugar to spike dramatically and remain elevated for hours.

Over time, repeated spikes like this can disrupt blood sugar regulation and increase the risk of insulin resistance, a common barrier to fat loss.

This pattern often occurs when sugar or refined carbohydrates are consumed alone. Pairing carbohydrates with protein, fat or fiber helps stabilize blood glucose levels and reduce spikes that can lead to cravings, fat storage and energy crashes later in the day.

When she switched to a protein- and fiber-rich breakfast and a sugar-free creamer, her blood sugar stabilized and her daily food choices improved.

Structured programs and group environments can also help reinforce these habits, as clients learn from both coaches and peers while building consistency.

What you can do:

• Start the day with a protein-rich breakfast.

• Pair carbohydrates with protein or fiber in meals and snacks.

• Avoid starting the day with sweetened foods or drinks on an empty stomach.

Your first meal often sets the metabolic tone for the rest of the day.

THE

“HEAVY ENOUGH”

ILLUSION

One of the most common frustrations I hear from clients is this: “I’m lifting weights three to four days a week, but I’m not seeing results.”

When I looked more closely at one client’s workouts, the issue was not frequency but intensity. She attended strength classes three times a week, but the weights she used were not challenging enough to stimulate muscle growth.

Muscles must be progressively challenged, a principle known as progressive overload, in order to grow stronger and adapt. Movement alone is not enough. The muscle must be pushed beyond what it is accustomed to.

This is where coaching becomes critical. In both personal training and small group settings, trainers can guide clients to choose appropriate weights, adjust form and push safely beyond their comfort zone, something that is often difficult to do alone.

Some people worry heavier weights will lead to injury. In reality, when done with proper form and gradual progression, strength training with challenging weights is one of the safest and most effective ways to build muscle.

How to know whether a weight is challenging enough: • If, at the end of a set, you can easily complete five more reps, the weight is too light. • The final few repetitions should feel difficult. • When increasing weight, it is normal to complete only five to seven reps at first. • By the end of a set, your muscles should feel fatigued.

Learn to recognize the difference between something feeling hard and something feeling painful. Hard is productive. Pain is a signal to stop.

THE GLP-1 MUSCLE PROBLEM

GLP-1 medications have helped many people achieve significant weight loss while improving markers of health such as blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

However, an important part of the conversation is often overlooked. Research shows that up to 40% of weight lost during rapid weight loss can come from muscle mass.

Several clients who began training with me after starting these medications had lost weight but also showed signs of reduced muscle tone. They reported very low appetite and were eating small amounts of food without prioritizing protein.

Food is fuel. The body needs adequate carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to build muscle and maintain bone density.

Guided training programs are especially important here, helping clients maintain strength, prioritize muscle retention and follow a structured plan that supports long-term health.

Key priorities include strength training two to three times a week, prioritizing adequate protein intake and focusing on balanced meals with protein, fiber and healthy fats.

Fat loss is only part of the health equation. Lean body mass, including bone and muscle, matters, too.

BREAKING THE CRAVING CYCLE

Perhaps the most common concern I hear from clients is this: “I have a lot of cravings.”

Cravings often feel powerful and out of our control. They are frequently linked to highly processed foods, carbohydrate-heavy meals or alcohol consumption.

However, something interesting happens when clients participate in structured programs that emphasize balanced meals, higher protein intake, fiber-rich foods and reduced sugar.

After about two weeks, many report that their cravings decrease significantly.

Group training and coaching environments also provide accountability and support, making it easier to stay consistent during that initial adjustment period.

Ways to help stabilize hormones that influence cravings include eating 30 to 40 grams of protein with balanced carbohydrates and healthy fats at each meal, reducing added sugars for at least two weeks and prioritizing sleep. For many people, about seven hours of sleep a night helps support healthy hunger hormone regulation.

The first week may be challenging, but most people are surprised by how quickly things improve.

THE BIGGER LESSON

After thousands of hours working with clients, I’ve learned that success rarely depends on extreme workouts or complicated diets.

Instead, it comes down to understanding a few core principles: hydration, blood sugar balance, progressive strength training, balanced nutrition and proper sleep.

Because fitness is not just about working harder.

It is about working smarter.

CLOSER TO HOME THAN YOU THINK

Domestic violence is often thought of as something that happens somewhere else.

In another town. In another family. Behind someone else’s closed doors.

But advocates say the reality is far closer to home than many people realize.

How Safe + Sound Somerset and Lyons

& Associates are helping survivors find safety, strength and a path forward

“Domestic violence and sexual assault are everyone issues,” says Joelle Piercy, director of outreach and community engagement at Safe + Sound Somerset.

For nearly five decades, Safe + Sound Somerset has worked quietly but powerfully behind the scenes to support survivors across the region. The organization provides a 24-hour helpline, emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy and community education for individuals impacted by domestic and sexual violence.

Last year alone, the nonprofit served more than 7,000 individuals throughout Somerset County.

For Gabriella Dudajek, digital marketing and outreach coordinator, the work has revealed how widespread these experiences can be.

“You don’t realize how many people in your life experience some sort of violence,” she shares. “It touches everybody.”

While the conversations surrounding domestic violence often focus on the immediate crisis, Safe + Sound’s team also sees the longterm transformation that can happen when survivors are supported.

Advocates share stories of individuals who arrive feeling overwhelmed and emotionally burdened, but leave with renewed independence and stability.

“We’ve seen survivors leave the safe house, find jobs, buy homes and rebuild their lives,” emphasizes Dr. Hasnaa Mokhtar, vice president of advancement. “There’s healing and transformation that comes from this work.”

A Community-Wide Effort

Addressing domestic violence requires more than emergency support. It also requires legal protection, education and strong community partnerships.

That is where the team at Lyons & Associates, P.C. has stepped in with a new initiative designed to expand legal support for survivors.

Attorney Nicole L. Atlak, Esq., Chair of the firm’s Domestic Violence Practice Group, notes one of the biggest challenges survivors face is navigating the legal system without representation.

“If they do not have privately retained counsel, survivors, as plaintiffs to a domestic violence complaint in family court, are expected to present their own case in court, including testifying and presenting evidence in a way that satisfies their legal burden of proof.  For many survivors, that can be incredibly overwhelming, and sometimes, a little discouraging,” she explains.

Unlike criminal cases, where defendants may be entitled to free representation and complainants have their interests represented by prosecutors, litigants proceeding with domestic violence actions in Family Court are not automatically afforded legal representation. As a result, many survivors must represent themselves in court, managing

Safe + Sound Somerset

the complex procedural requirements while navigating the deeply personal and emotionally difficult weight of the litigation.

To help address this gap, Lyons & Associates, spearheaded by Nicole Atlak and the firm’s managing partner, Theresa A. Lyons, Esq., MSW, partnered with Safe + Sound Somerset to create a specialized training program for attorneys.

The curriculum combines legal strategy with trauma-informed education, helping lawyers better understand the realities survivors face both in and out of the courtroom.

“We’re teaching attorneys not only how to present these cases effectively, but also what domestic violence actually looks like and how trauma can impact a survivor’s experience,” Nicole says.

The program has already been approved and accredited by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a continuing legal education course, allowing attorneys to earn professional credits while gaining deeper knowledge about domestic violence advocacy.

The goal is to expand the training across New Jersey, ensuring survivors have access to informed, compassionate legal representation.  In exchange, volunteering attorneys accepting cases on a pro bono basis will satisfy necessary state licensing requirements.

Breaking the Silence

Despite growing awareness, domestic violence remains a difficult topic for many communities to discuss openly.

“There’s still a lot of stigma and shame associated with it,” Mokhtar shares. “People often think it happens to someone else, not to us, until it hits close to home.”

Education is a critical part of breaking that stigma.

Safe + Sound Somerset regularly works with schools, nonprofits and community organizations to teach young people about healthy relationships and warning signs of abuse.

Advocates say these conversations can help prevent violence before it begins.

By addressing trauma, they also strengthen the broader community. Studies show that violence and abuse are linked to higher rates of mental health challenges, substance abuse and chronic health conditions.

“When we support survivors and work to prevent violence,” Piercy explains, “we’re creating a safer and healthier community for everyone.”

Looking Ahead

As Safe + Sound Somerset approaches its 50th anniversary in 2028, the organization continues to expand its outreach and partnerships.

For leaders on both sides of the collaboration, the message is simple. Domestic violence is not just a personal issue. It is a community issue that requires collective action.

“This work requires a community-wide response,” Piercy says. “There’s a place for everyone to get involved.”

Through advocacy, legal support and education, organizations like Safe + Sound Somerset and Lyons & Associates are helping ensure that survivors across New Jersey know one important truth:

AND PHOTOGRAPHY

“Beautiful,

Yes!”

Nearly 40 years of skincare wisdom, Italian inspiration and personalized care in the heart of Morristown.

If you’re looking for a New Jersey-based skin care spa that values a personalized approach, look no further than Bellezza Si.

The Morristown-based, full-service European skin care spa, opened by Caterina Castaldo nearly 38 years ago, is built on her strong beliefs about what good skin care should look like. Today, its offerings extend beyond traditional skin care to include a variety of wellness services designed to support clients holistically.

“Skin care has to be curated,” Castaldo says. “It has to be built and maintained.”

From the beginning, Castaldo has treated her clients like family—and in many cases, they have become just that. Early on, she showed a natural talent for skin care and beauty. With encouragement from those around her, that interest grew into a thriving business.

“It was a passion of mine,” Castaldo says. “I always gravitated toward well-being and helping someone, educating my clients to better skin care and wellness.”

In fact, the business came about organically.

“It was never my dream to build a business,” she says. “It just happened because I loved doing what I do.”

A core inspiration for her work is her birthplace, Udine, Italy, where her passion first took root. She later earned her cosmetology license, which led her to open the business. Through her work, she realized there was room to bring high-quality products sourced from Italy to her clients, eventually leading her to develop her own line.

Castaldo later moved to Morristown and quickly fell in love with the town.

“You have the city, the airports, the shoreline—there are so many great things about Morristown,” she says. “It had that charm, that old American charm. There’s a lot of history here.”

It became the perfect home for her business, and over time, the spa became a fixture in the local community.

Bellezza Si, which means “Beautiful Yes!” in Italian, was founded with the goal of educating clients and helping them build better skin care habits. When the spa opened nearly four decades ago, Castaldo says esthetics was far less developed in the United States.

“At that time, they really didn’t have very much in this country for esthetics like how it is now with all these spas and med spas,” she says.

Anneliese Sepaniak, LMT.

That environment created an opportunity for Bellezza Si to focus on expertise and education. It also allowed Castaldo to bring her European skin care philosophy to a market where it was still relatively rare.

“European skin care was very scarce to find, and most of the people practicing it here were Europeans,” she says.

That emphasis on proper technique and knowledge continues to shape the spa today and helps set it apart.

After nearly four decades in business, Bellezza Si has built a loyal client base rooted in trust. Treatments are recommended based on each client’s skin and lifestyle rather than trends. Estheticians determine the best approach to help clients reach their skin care goals, creating a thoughtful, individualized experience.

“We’re looking for a long-term relationship with our clients,” Castaldo says.

She views skin care as an ongoing process rather than a one-time appointment, allowing trust to build between client and practitioner over time.

“Skin care is very personal,” she says. “It’s very intimate.”

That commitment to personalized care extends beyond facials and skin treatments. Bellezza Si also offers wellness services, including therapeutic massage by practitioners such as Anneliese Sepaniak, LMT. Sepaniak brings more than three decades of experience and training in deep tissue technique, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, craniosacral therapy and manual lymphatic drainage. That range allows her to tailor each session to the client’s needs, reflecting the spa’s broader philosophy of customized care.

Much of the beauty industry has shifted toward quick fixes and highly commercialized treatments. Procedures are often promoted by influencers on Instagram and TikTok or showcased by celebrities on red carpets.

“People read something on social media and run to find that service, whether they need it or not,” Castaldo says.

Those treatments often prioritize speed over long-term skin health.

“You really need someone that is seasoned, that understands skin care and what it’s all about,” she says.

Trends may come and go, but expertise-backed skin care never goes out of style. Businesses like Bellezza Si, which champion that philosophy, are becoming increasingly rare. That is what makes Castaldo’s perspective so refreshing. She remains relevant by staying focused on experience, trust and thoughtful skin care, even as the industry continues to evolve.

“I have clients here that have been with me for 38 years,” she says. “Now I know their families, their kids and even their grandchildren.”

Bellezza Si continues to grow while staying grounded in the values that built it—care, consistency and connection.

LANDSCAPES THAT LAST

For many New Jersey homeowners, the landscape is the largest living investment on their property. Mature trees, healthy lawns and thriving plantings add beauty, privacy and long-term value. But like any investment, they require thoughtful management, expertise and ongoing care.

For more than 70 years, the Haskell family has been that trusted partner.

Founded in 1952 as Haskell Tree Experts, what began as a small tree care operation has evolved into Plant Solutions Tree and Lawn Care—a third-generation, family-run company serving Central New Jersey with a comprehensive, science-based approach to plant health, lawn care and full-service landscape management.

Today, Plant Solutions serves residential and commercial clients throughout Somerset Hills, Basking Ridge, Far Hills, Bernardsville and surrounding communities. But what truly sets the company apart is its role as a single point of contact for every landscape need.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on being able to handle anything that comes along on a property,” says Michael Haskell, third-generation owner. “When a client calls us, they know we can assess it, diagnose it and manage it.”

PHOTOGRAPHY
Michael Haskell

THREE GENERATIONS OF KNOWLEDGE

Under Haskell’s leadership, Plant Solutions blends traditional field experience with modern arboriculture and plant science. With more than 38 years in professional landscape installation and management, he brings both hands-on knowledge and a deep understanding of long-term property stewardship.

The team includes ISA Certified Arborists and New Jersey DEP licensed applicators who evaluate each property individually, designing customized programs rather than applying a one-size-fits-all solution.

Preservation remains the priority. Removal is recommended only when necessary, and education is central to every client relationship.

“Our roots run deep” is more than a tagline. It reflects a multigenerational commitment to stewardship, technical expertise and thoughtful decision-making.

ONE PROPERTY. ONE STRATEGY.

A key differentiator for Plant Solutions is its integrated model. Rather than operating in silos, the lawn, tree and irrigation systems are evaluated together.

“Many plant health issues we see are not just about insects or disease,” Haskell explains. “They’re often the result of irrigation mismanagement or improper site conditions.”

Overwatering, poor drainage and inconsistent irrigation schedules can weaken root systems, create fungal conditions and stress trees and shrubs long before visible symptoms appear. By understanding how each system interacts, Plant Solutions addresses root causes—not just surface problems.

That holistic oversight is what allows the company to serve as a true landscape partner rather than just a service provider.

A SOIL-FIRST PHILOSOPHY

Unlike traditional programs that rely heavily on chemical applications, Plant Solutions prioritizes soil biology and natural systems.

Its approach focuses on building plant health from the ground up through organic-based inputs and biodynamic principles refined through decades of field experience. Chemical controls are used only when necessary and as part of a broader strategy.

By strengthening soil structure and restoring beneficial biology, landscapes often require less water, fewer corrective treatments and less mechanical intervention over time.

Organic lawn care programs include fertilization, weed management and pest control tailored to each property’s needs and budget. The goal is strong, visible results while maintaining environmental responsibility and safety for families and pets.

FULL-SERVICE PROPERTY CARE

Plant Solutions offers comprehensive services across lawn, tree and landscape divisions. Lawn programs include fertilization, liming, aeration, slice seeding and irrigation oversight. Tree and shrub services include plant health care, risk evaluation, cabling, bracing and long-term preservation planning.

The company also provides deer, tick and mosquito control programs, allowing families to enjoy outdoor spaces more comfortably.

Commercial clients rely on Plant Solutions for landscape maintenance, seasonal services, snow removal and holiday décor installations. The team works closely with property managers and business owners to maintain curb appeal and safe, welcoming grounds year-round.

COMMUNITY-FOCUSED. CLIENT-DRIVEN.

Plant Solutions has built its reputation on long-term relationships throughout Somerset County and beyond.

Each property is treated as unique. Landscape evaluations, second opinions and education are part of the process, helping owners avoid unnecessary costs and protect valuable plant material.

As conversations around sustainability and property investment continue to evolve, Haskell believes landscape stewardship is one of the most practical long-term investments a homeowner can make.

Healthy trees, living soils and properly managed irrigation systems do more than improve aesthetics—they protect value, reduce long-term costs and contribute to environmental health.

With three generations behind it and a future focused on integrated, responsible care, Plant Solutions continues to grow more than landscapes.

It grows trust.

The Go-To Guide for Planning a Wedding in One of New Jersey’s Most Elegant Regions

The Somerset Hills Bride

There is something quietly romantic about a wedding in the Somerset Hills.

Perhaps it is the way the landscape unfolds into rolling countryside just minutes from charming town centers. Or the way historic estates seem almost designed for celebrations that feel both timeless and personal. For generations, couples have chosen this pocket of New Jersey for weddings that blend elegance, natural beauty and a strong sense of place.

From garden ceremonies in Bernardsville to estate receptions tucked into the hills of Peapack-Gladstone, the Somerset Hills bride often finds inspiration not just in Pinterest boards or bridal magazines, but in the character of the region itself.

The Setting

Few places in New Jersey offer the kind of backdrop found throughout the Somerset Hills. Grand estates, sweeping farmland and historic architecture create a natural stage for celebrations that feel refined yet relaxed.

At Pendry Natirar, couples exchange vows surrounded by acres of preserved countryside, where manicured gardens meet wideopen views of the hills beyond. The property’s historic estate setting has become synonymous with elevated celebrations that balance heritage and modern luxury.

Just down the road, Natirar remains one of the region’s most recognizable wedding destinations. The estate’s sweeping lawns and dramatic views offer a setting that feels almost cinematic, particularly during golden hour when the surrounding farmland glows in soft evening light.

Nearby, Hamilton Farm Golf Club provides a different interpretation of Somerset Hills elegance. With its stately clubhouse and expansive grounds, the venue captures the spirit of a private estate gathering while accommodating larger celebrations.

For couples drawn to historic gardens and intimate ceremonies, Cross Estate Gardens offers a setting that feels almost transported from another era. Stone paths, seasonal blooms and European-inspired landscaping create a romantic atmosphere that feels both timeless and distinctly local.

The Style

Somerset Hills weddings often share a quiet sense of restraint. Rather than over-the-top extravagance, many couples lean into details that feel thoughtful, layered and timeless.

Bridal fashion reflects that same sensibility. Classic silhouettes, delicate lace and heirloom accessories often take center stage, echoing the historic architecture and pastoral scenery surrounding many of the region’s venues.

Many local brides begin their search close to home, visiting boutiques such as Seng Couture or I Do… I Do… Bridal Boutique in nearby Morristown, where curated collections and personalized fittings have made them longtime destinations for Somerset Hills weddings.

Florals tend to follow the rhythm of the seasons: soft garden roses in spring, lush greenery and hydrangeas in summer, muted palettes in the fall. The goal is rarely to overpower the setting but to complement it. Local florists such as Blooms at the Hills in Bedminster and other boutique studios throughout Somerset County often design arrangements that mirror the countryside’s natural palette, blending garden-style blooms with seasonal greenery.

The result is a style that feels effortless but deeply considered.

The Moments

While receptions and ceremonies often command attention, many brides say the most memorable moments happen long before the first guest arrives.

There is the quiet stillness of the morning, sunlight filtering through tall windows as hair and makeup artists move through the room. There is the moment a veil is pinned into place, a mother fastening a bracelet or a group of bridesmaids raising a glass in anticipation of the day ahead.

These are the moments photographers often describe as the most meaningful. They are unscripted, emotional and fleeting, yet they capture the essence of the day in ways grand gestures sometimes cannot.

A Wedding That Reflects Place

What ultimately defines a Somerset Hills wedding is not just the setting, but the connection many couples have to the community itself.

Some grew up riding horses on nearby farms. Others spent childhood weekends exploring the countryside or attending local events with family. For many brides, choosing to marry here feels less like selecting a venue and more like returning to a place that already holds meaning.

In the Somerset Hills, weddings rarely feel disconnected from their surroundings. Instead, they reflect the landscape, history and quiet elegance that define the region.

For the Somerset Hills bride, that sense of place is what transforms a beautiful celebration into something unforgettable.

HYPERLOCAL EXPERTISE WITH A PERSONAL APPROACH TO REAL ESTATE

THE WEST OAK TEAM

The West Oak Team combines hyperlocal expertise with the kind of genuine, personal care that makes all the difference when it matters most.

Founded by Marie Young, the West Oak Team at Coldwell Banker Realty is a group of equal partners who bring deep local knowledge, professional experience and a warm, thoughtful approach to every client relationship.

When it is time for a listing appointment, the conversation often becomes personal. Around kitchen tables, homeowners share the stories of their homes — the memories created within them and the reasons guiding their next chapter. The West Oak Team listens closely, learning what makes each property unique and what matters most to the people who live there.

ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIZ POLOHAVANA PHOTOGRAPHY, THE WEST OAK TEAM

From that first conversation through closing, clients know exactly who will guide them: the agent they chose, supported by the strength of the entire team behind the scenes.

Whether clients are selling a home they have lived in for decades or searching for a place to begin again, the team meets them where they are. The agent who first meets with a client remains the primary point of contact throughout the process, while additional team members collaborate when their expertise best serves the client’s needs. The approach is flexible, client-first and never transactional.

The team also understands that not every move begins with excitement. For many homeowners and buyers, moving represents the closing of an important chapter. The West Oak Team approaches each relationship with empathy, guiding clients through every stage so that no question goes unanswered and no detail is overlooked.

Their roots in Basking Ridge and the Somerset Hills run deep. The team knows the schools, the streets and the subtle market nuances that only come from years of living and working in the community. Their members include certified global luxury specialists, multilingual associates and former township Communications Committee and Board of Education members who offer firsthand insight into local events, schools, charitable causes and the character of each neighborhood.

That local fluency, combined with expert staging, professional photography and videography, and strategic marketing, ensures clients approach every decision informed and confident. Their strong presence in the community also means they are readily available when needs arise, serving not only as real estate advisors but also as ambassadors for life in Basking Ridge.

The results speak for themselves. In 2025, the West Oak Team closed 83 transactions totaling more than $70 million in sales volume. Since its inception, the team has remained the No. 1 team in the Basking Ridge office and ranks among the top medium-sized teams at Coldwell Banker Realty. RealTrends, sponsored by The Wall Street Journal, has recognized the team among the top medium-sized teams in the nation across all brands.

The team has also been honored as a three-time winner of Somerset Hills City Lifestyle Magazine’s ‘Readers’ Choice Winner’ including this year.

But while the numbers are impressive, what clients remember most is something less measurable: the calm guidance, the clarity and the confidence that someone truly had their back throughout the entire process.

Your next move starts with the right team.

Real talk!

Bernards Township's spring market is active and favorable for sellers. New listings are coming on the market at roughly half the pace of last year, which means more competition for well-positioned homes. At the same time, buyers are informed and deliberate they know what they're looking for, and they move decisively when they find it. Homes that are well maintained, attractively priced, and show genuine pride of ownership inside and out are drawing strong interest. The contrast with overpriced or under-prepared listings is striking homes that are well-positioned are under contract within the first week or two, while others may require one or more price adjustments along the way, and are typically closing below where a right price may have landed them What buyers respond to most is a home that feels genuinely cared for good condition throughout, attractive outdoor spaces, and a price that reflects real market value That combination, in communities with top-rated schools and easy access to major transportation, continues to generate meaningful competition among buyers.
