LIFESTYLE LETTER

Intentions for the Year Ahead Happy New Year, Somerset Hills! This time of year always makes me pause and take stock of where I am and what I want for the months ahead. For a lot of people, that means resolutions. For me? Not so much. I’ve learned I’m better off skipping the sweeping declarations and sticking to small, steady choices—the kind that feel realistic in a house with four daughters, a busy home and a to-do list that somehow multiplies overnight. That idea of choosing well—not perfectly, not dramatically, just intentionally—feels especially fitting as we dive into our Health & Wellness Issue. January can be a tough month: it’s cold, it’s dark and we’re all trying to find our rhythm again after the holidays. So this issue is designed to feel grounding, energizing and encouraging as we start the year together. We’re kicking things off with a feature that sets the tone for the new year. Turn to page 56 for Find Your Alpha, our cover story on Alpha Fit Club Basking Ridge. This four-week circuit-style program brings serious energy to Somerset Hills, offering scalable, strength-focused workouts for every fitness level. Whether you’re building momentum or looking for a challenge, the atmosphere inside Alpha is electric—and rooted in true community. For an entirely different kind of reset, turn to page 22 for Spend a Day With Us at SoJo Spa Club. This story takes you inside one of New Jersey’s most impressive wellness destinations, from rooftop infinity pools to therapeutic baths and eight unique sauna rooms. It’s the perfect inspiration for anyone craving rest, warmth and a break from the winter rush. This month also includes the Somerset Hills City Lifestyle Readers’ Choice Awards, highlighting top local leaders in health and wellness. Categories include Best Boutique Fitness, Best Dental Practice, Best Gym, Best Medical Spa, Best Mental Health Provider, Best Optometrist, Best Orthodontist and Best Physical Therapist. Turn to page 14 to see this year’s winners. And be sure to follow @bridgewater_somerset_hills to vote in upcoming categories each month. Wishing you a year of clarity, momentum and choices that feel good—one steady step at a time.

T E AC HING JOY Y E A R-R OUND HOW FAR HILLS COUNTRY DAY SCHOOL TURNS HOLIDAY LESSONS INTO LIFELONG WELL-BEING As families settle into a new year, many take a moment to reflect on the season that just passed—what it taught us, how it brought us together, and the values it highlighted. At Far Hills Country Day School (Far Hills), those lessons aren’t confined to a single month. Instead, they become part of the school’s year-round approach to educating the whole child, emphasizing well-being, cultural appreciation and community connection.

AN INCLUSIVE APPROACH TO SEASONAL LEARNING Far Hills capitalizes on the holiday season to continue emphasizing community and encouraging curiosity. Classrooms and gathering spaces feature symbols of Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, helping students understand and appreciate a wide range of cultural traditions. Families often visit classrooms to share their own customs—from storytelling to hands-on activities— giving students authentic, memorable experiences rooted in diversity.

This intentional approach fosters a sense of belonging. “At Far Hills, the holiday season brings our Five Pillars—Kindness, Honesty, Respect, Leadership and Responsibility—to life in the most meaningful ways,” says Georgia Zaiser, head of school. “Whether it’s our preschoolers discovering new traditions, our older students leading acts of service, or families joining together in shared celebration, every member of our community plays a part.” TRADITIONS THAT STRENGTHEN WELL-BEING Far Hills hosts several signature traditions that bring students and families together, creating a joyful environment that supports emotional wellness. SCHOOLWIDE HOLIDAY CONCERTS: All students participate in these musical celebrations. In addition to the K–8 concert, the Preschool presents its own performance, ensuring that our youngest learners feel comfortable and supported—while still experiencing the joy of singing, using props, and celebrating the season. Their concert also introduces a variety of holiday traditions, offering early exposure to diverse celebrations. The K–8 concert includes a cherished moment when alumni return to join in singing “Christmas Is a Feeling,” symbolizing connection across generations. DOOR DECORATING CONTEST: Students in Grades 5–8 engage in a collaborative competition that encourages creativity, teamwork, and school spirit. KINDERGARTEN GINGERBREAD EVENT: This hands-on tradition blends academic learning with joyful creativity. Students read and compare multiple Gingerbread Man stories, study different community settings, write descriptive narratives, and share them during Community Meeting. Families join them to decorate gingerbread character cookies—a highlight of the year that reinforces collaboration and confidence. GIVING BACK AS A FORM OF WELLNESS Acts of service are central to the school's holiday philosophy. Giving trees placed at school entrances invite families to donate gifts to children through the Holiday Hope program. Upper School students write letters to individuals who may be spending the season alone, offering encouragement and human connection.

These traditions nurture empathy, social awareness, and emotional resilience—key components of a child's well-being. A COMMUNITY ROOTED IN CULTURAL APPRECIATION Teachers integrate stories, music, and lessons that highlight global traditions of light, celebration, and generosity. Spanish classes explore las posadas and practice seasonal carols in Spanish, encouraging both cultural and linguistic understanding. Families continue these conversations at home, supporting the school’s commitment to raising culturally aware, compassionate learners. BUILDING A FOUNDATION THAT CARRIES INTO THE NEW YEAR What makes Far Hills distinct is the way these celebrations reflect its core values. Whether through service, shared traditions, or hands-on learning, every activity is grounded in the school's Five Pillars: Respect, Responsibility, Leadership, Kindness, and Honesty. Though the holiday season has passed, its lessons remain. Students return in January not just refreshed, but enriched—carrying forward meaningful experiences that strengthen their sense of community, deepen their emotional intelligence, and support their year-round growth. At Far Hills, the holidays are more than a moment. They are a catalyst for connection, learning, and well-being that lasts long into the new year. For more information, visit fhcds.org.

SPEND A day with us AT SOJO SPA club The Ultimate Wellness Playground ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY SOJO SPA CLUB

If paradise had a zip code, it might just be 660 River Road in Edgewater, New Jersey. That’s where SoJo Spa Club rises above the Hudson River—a 140,000-square-foot wellness wonderland with skyline views so stunning you’ll forget you’re still in the Garden State. I finally visited SoJo after hearing friends rave about it for years, and this time I brought my mom along for a muchneeded day of relaxation. The moment we stepped onto that rooftop deck, we understood the hype. The combination of crisp air, warm water and shimmering Manhattan views was pure magic—and sharing that moment with her made it even more special. We spent the day exploring every sauna, soak and salt scrub SoJo has to offer—and trust us, this isn’t your average spa day. It’s a full-body adventure, equal parts rejuvenating and Instagram-worthy.

MORNING: DIP, STEAM, REPEAT

Start your day early (doors open at 9 a.m.) and head straight for the rooftop infinity pool, where you can sip your coffee while gazing at Manhattan’s glittering skyline. From there, wander down to one of eleven specialty outdoor pools and therapeutic baths—each offering a unique experience, from jet massages to mineral-infused therapeutic waters. Feeling bold? The Volcanic Sand Bath, imported straight from Ibusuki, Japan, lets you literally sink into warmth as fine grains envelop your body—an experience equal parts bizarre and blissful.

ESPA full-service spa

MIDDAY: SWEAT IT OUT, KOREAN STYLE

Inside, you’ll find eight different sauna rooms, each with its own personality. The Himalayan Salt Room glows with pink serenity, while the Ice Room delivers a refreshing chill that’s both shocking and strangely addictive. True spa purists will want to experience the traditional Korean body scrub, a signature SoJo ritual that leaves your skin smoother than silk and your stress evaporated. Afterward, drift into the ESPA full-service spa, where expert therapists offer massages, acupressure and a signature scalp treatment available as part of the ESPA massage package. Note: SoJo does not offer facial treatments, and acupressure services are distinct from the Chinese reflexology and Japanese shiatsu techniques offered separately at the spa—important cultural distinctions that set each modality apart.

Himalayan Salt Room

AFTERNOON: LOUNGE, LUNCH AND LOUNGE SOME MORE

By now, you’ve earned a meal. The Food Hall serves up everything from ramen to refreshing smoothies, and in warmer months, the seasonal rooftop lounges are perfect for an alfresco bite. The rooftop garden on the eighth floor—also seasonal—offers a lush, quiet escape framed by panoramic views of the city. (It is currently closed for the season.) If you’re feeling productive, SoJo even has a co-working space with desks, Wi-Fi and private phone booths—because who says wellness and work can’t coexist? Or check into one of the 22 hotel rooms, including four spacious suites, to extend your staycation into a full wellness weekend.

EVENING: SUNSET SERENITY

As the sun dips behind the skyline, the pools glow with soft light and the steam from the saunas curls into the twilight. It’s the kind of magic that makes time slow down—where every inhale feels like renewal. Whether you’re visiting for a few hours or a full day, SoJo Spa Club is a place to recharge, reconnect and rediscover balance.

TALL ORDER, Timeless STYLE ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS

Rachel Willingham launches rach.will: luxury womenswear designed for women 5’10” and taller

When it comes to fashion, the runway has long celebrated tall frames—but finding clothing off the rack that fits those same women? That’s where the story falls short. For Rachel Willingham, a Basking Ridge resident, former model and runway producer, and now founder of rach.will, the solution became personal. Married to Nathaniel Willingham, who enters his fourth season with the New York Jets and his first as the assistant linebackers coach, Rachel set out to build a brand that finally gives tall women the luxury fashion experience they’ve been missing. For years, Willingham worked behind the scenes producing shows for other designers and training models for the catwalks of New York, Miami and beyond. Yet, even in those glamorous spaces, she noticed a gap no one was addressing. “For so long, tall women have been left out of the in-store luxury fashion experience,” she says. “We’ve had to compromise on fit or settle for online brands that don’t meet the same quality or ethical standards. I wanted to change that narrative.” Her solution? A brand that’s not just about lengthened inseams—it’s about belonging. rach.will’s mission is to empower tall women to feel seen, celebrated and stylish in clothing tailored to their proportions and personalities. “It’s more than fashion,” Willingham says. “It’s about building a community where tall women can feel confident, elegant and connected.” The brand’s debut collection, Her Legacy in Bloom, set the tone for what rach.will represents: timeless sophistication with an unapologetically modern edge. The collection debuted at

a private launch event in Morristown this fall, transforming the nonprofit café Ethan & The Bean into a Victorian-inspired garden runway. Twelve meticulously crafted looks—from high-collared silk blouses and floor-grazing wide-leg trousers to structured blazers with extended torso lengths—showcased a refined mix of romance and strength. Each garment was produced through small-batch, ethical manufacturing, reflecting Willingham’s belief that luxury and sustainability can coexist. “It’s about quality, not quantity,” she notes. “Our pieces are made to last—to be cherished, not just consumed.” The show’s timing was no accident. Just hours before the models took to the runway, Fox5NY aired an exclusive feature spotlighting Willingham’s transition from runway producer to designer, positioning her as a rising voice in New Jersey’s growing fashion scene. Guests at the launch—including department store buyers, stylists, editors and even members of the New York Jets organization—were treated to an immersive experience that married artistry with advocacy. The choice of venue was deeply intentional. Ethan & The Bean employs individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities, offering meaningful employment and inclusion—values that mirror rach.will’s own mission. Guests were invited to support the café’s ongoing work, turning the night into more than a fashion moment—it became a statement about community and compassion.

“It’s elegance with empowerment. Strength with grace. “This launch wasn’t just a debut,” Willingham reflects. “It was a way to say that style has a heart. That empowerment can start with a hemline.” The event came together thanks to a generous roster of sponsors, with The Emily LaFrinere Real Estate Team as presenting sponsor and supporting partners including Tresolz, Geneba Tequila, Toca Vez Mexican Steakhouse, Magnolia Paperie, My Love Story Jewelry, The Rebecca Collection and, of course, Ethan & The Bean itself. Local creatives— from photographers and florists to beauty teams—lent their talents to bring Willingham’s vision to life, proving that couture-level storytelling can thrive right here in New Jersey. The collection’s title, Her Legacy in Bloom, carries a message close to Willingham’s heart. It’s an homage to the generations of women who came before— and the ones she hopes to inspire. “Legacy is about the impact you leave behind,” she says. “For me, that means creating pieces that honor the woman who wears them and the story she’s writing.” Looking ahead, Willingham’s ambitions are as tall as her clientele. She’s already in discussions with department stores and luxury retailers to bring rach.will to select physical locations, a move that would give tall women their long-overdue seat—and rack—in the luxury fashion world. Plans are also underway for seasonal collections that further expand sizing options and silhouettes, from elevated daywear to tailored outerwear. Beyond the garments themselves, Willingham is building a digital and in-person community hub for tall women—a platform to connect, share styling advice and celebrate representation in fashion. “We want to be a home base for tall women everywhere,” she says. “Because we deserve to shop for clothes that fit not just our bodies, but our standards.” In a fashion landscape still dominated by fast trends and narrow definitions, rach. will stands out as a brand with both vision and values—one that understands that true luxury begins with inclusion, authenticity and craftsmanship. “We’re redefining what luxury looks like,” Willingham says. “It’s elegance with empowerment. Strength with grace. And it’s designed for women who refuse to shrink to fit.” For more information on rach.will, upcoming collections and exclusive events, visit rachwill.com or follow @rachwilldesign on Instagram.

More Than a Makeover J.Walker Salon Owner Jessica Walker Helps Lead Diva For A Day’s 15th Anniversary Celebration Jessica Walker, owner of J.Walker Salon Group and a board member of the Diva for a Day Foundation, joined community leaders and supporters at the nonprofit’s annual Do It for Diva fashion show to mark 15 years of bringing joy and beauty to women undergoing cancer treatment. Founded in Bernardsville, New Jersey, Diva for a Day has grown into a national effort that has provided more than 3,500 women across all 50 states with a complimentary day of pampering and renewal. Partner salons such as J.Walker donate their time and expertise to deliver professional services that help restore confidence and brighten spirits for women navigating a difficult season of life. “Diva for a Day embodies what we believe at J.Walker—that when your outer looks good, your inner feels better,” Walker says. “We are honored to serve as a salon partner and to be part of a mission that truly changes lives.” The Sept. 17 event featured a runway showcase of fall looks from local designers and boutiques, along with personal testimonials from past “Divas” who shared how the experience offered respite, dignity and hope. Community sponsors and attendees helped raise funds to sustain and expand the program’s services in the year ahead. Each Diva for a Day experience is tailored to the recipient and may include hair services, makeup, skincare, massage and other treatments. The foundation works with hospitals,

advocacy groups and community members to nominate women who could benefit from a restorative day focused solely on their well-being. Salons that participate receive guidance on creating a supportive environment that centers the guest’s comfort and privacy. Walker says J.Walker stylists view the work as an extension of their commitment to care. “We see firsthand how a simple blowout or a moment in the chair can lift someone’s spirit,” she says. “It’s humbling to be trusted with that.” Organizers note that the fashion show also serves as outreach, connecting potential volunteers, salons and donors with opportunities to participate. Whether through in-kind services, financial gifts or spreading the word, supporters help the foundation reach more women across the country. ARTICLE BY MICHAEL TODD

WHILE YOU’RE UNWINDING, START DREAMING As the year draws to a close, many welcome the slower pace after summer’s rush. The holidays invite us to pause, enjoy the warmth of home, reconnect with family and find moments of calm amid the bustle. For those who love their landscapes, this quieter time offers something else: perspective. With gardens at rest and the property’s structure visible, winter becomes an ideal season for reflection and planning.

A SEASON FOR OBSERVATION

Michael Todd

When leaves have fallen and perennials have faded, you can see the true framework of your landscape—how paths connect, how light moves across the property and where the eye naturally travels. It’s a time to note what works well and where there’s room to improve. Maybe you’ve realized you need more privacy from the road, better lighting along a path or more evergreens to enliven the winter garden. These small observations, made in the calm of winter, often become the seeds of next year’s projects.

Designing or refining an outdoor space takes time—to consider function, materials and plant choices that match how you live. When you reflect during winter, ideas can mature naturally. By spring, those ideas are ready to take shape, setting the stage for a more intentional and rewarding season outdoors.

This season, as you settle into the glow of the holidays, take a few quiet moments to step outside and see your property in a new light. Jot down thoughts, sketch an idea or simply take in the stillness. The best landscapes often begin this way—with time, reflection and vision. From all of us at The Todd Group, we wish you peace, warmth and inspiration this holiday season, and a beautiful year ahead.

STRENGTH IN

Healing How Dr. Robert Nencheck turned pain into purpose—and built a practice devoted to movement, recover y, and lasting relief.

Pain walked into Dr. Robert Nencheck’s life early. Relief didn’t. In Bedminster, he built Rehab Chiropractic Network to change that — favoring movement, strength and precise adjustments over prescriptions and surgery. Since opening in 2022, Dr. Nencheck has focused on helping patients recover from chronic pain, spinal disc injuries and pinched nerves through noninvasive care and consistent, functional rehab. Dr. Nencheck’s path to chiropractic care wasn’t conventional. Growing up in a home affected by opioid and drug addiction, he saw the dangers of dependency up close. What could have been a difficult environment became the catalyst for his mission. “I wanted to help people find alternatives to pain management,” he says. “I knew there had to be a better way.” As a student-athlete, Dr. Nencheck played football and worked as a personal trainer. A sports-related back injury introduced him to chiropractic care for the first time and changed his perspective. “I realized recovery didn’t always mean medication or surgery,” he says. “It opened my eyes to how the body can heal naturally.” After earning a degree in exercise science and physiology from Rutgers University, he completed his Doctor of Chiropractic at the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. While there, he treated veterans at a VA hospital. One patient — barely able to walk because of a pinched nerve — stood and walked out of the room minutes after an L5 adjustment. “That moment confirmed I was doing what I was meant to do,” Dr. Nencheck says. At Rehab Chiropractic Network, Dr. Nencheck oversees everything from consultations to personalized treatment plans. Each visit begins with a full evaluation to determine the best course of care. His philosophy is straightforward: pair mobility and strength work with targeted adjustments, and repeat consistently. The goal is a healthier, more mobile life. He often uses a car analogy to explain maintenance. “Your body is like an engine,” he says. “Skip routine maintenance and it breaks down. Regular movement and adjustments are like oil changes — they keep everything running smoothly.” To support whole-person care, Dr. Nencheck leases space to a massage therapist and a psychiatrist. New patients receive a brief office tour, a review of medical history, orthopedic and neurological testing, and a tailored plan. He also offers free consultations to ensure a good fit. CONTINUED >

Outside the office, he practices what he teaches: a steady fitness routine, his own regular adjustments and volunteer service with the Far Hills First Aid Squad. Looking ahead, he hopes to expand to additional locations. “The goal is simple,” he says. “Help as many people as possible to live without pain.” Learn more at rehabchiropracticnetwork.com.

Dr. Vince Sferra

Unlocking the “Why” Behind Chronic Symptoms Inside NMR’s Functional Medicine Approach When patients walk into Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation (NMR) in Somerset, they’re often carrying more than symptoms—they’re carrying years of unanswered questions. Many have visited multiple specialists, completed standard labs and imaging, and still been told their results are “normal,” despite feeling anything but. That gap between traditional findings and lived experience is exactly where NMR’s functional medicine team steps in—led by Dr. Vince Sferra, founder and clinic director. A chiropractor with extensive training in functional and integrative medicine, Dr. Sferra has spent decades helping patients uncover the root causes of chronic, unresolved health concerns. His approach blends clinical

expertise, compassion and deeper investigative testing to reveal what standard evaluations often miss. “At its core, functional medicine is about uncovering the mechanisms driving a person’s dysfunction or disease,” Dr. Sferra explains. “Instead of stopping at symptoms, we ask why they’re happening—and what processes are fueling them.”

SEEING WHAT CONVENTIONAL LABS MISS

Patients who seek functional medicine care often struggle with long-standing issues: fatigue, digestive distress, joint aches, autoimmune reactivity, hormone imbalance or brain fog. These concerns aren’t always captured in routine bloodwork.

ARTICLE BY CARLY MAC MANUS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MICHAEL LAGO CREATIVE COMPANY

44

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

“Conventional labs diagnose pathology, which is critical,” Dr. Sferra notes. “But when those tests come back normal, patients are often told it’s genetics or stress—without any real testing or deeper evaluation. That’s not enough.” NMR uses specialized lab panels to identify underlying dysfunction, including stool analysis, adrenal and hormone profiling, micronutrient testing, inflammatory markers, gut and blood–brain barrier integrity and food immune-reactivity—not to be confused with allergy testing. “These labs, combined with detailed histories and lifestyle diaries, give us a fuller picture of what the body is struggling with and why,” he adds.

A THOUGHTFUL, THOROUGH FIRST VISIT

NMR begins with a modest-fee consultation designed to help patients experience the practice firsthand. “We learn enough to determine whether a functional medicine workup is truly the right path,” Dr. Sferra explains. From there, the team conducts a comprehensive review of medical history, questionnaires, previous labs and lifestyle patterns before ordering additional tests. When results arrive, patients receive a complete explanation of what the numbers mean—and how they connect to their symptoms. “Education is central,” Dr. Sferra emphasizes. “People deserve to understand what’s happening in their own bodies.”

THE “TRIAD OF HEALTH”

Once patterns are identified, NMR builds personalized care plans centered on what they call the Triad of Health: nutrition, movement and mindset. “The overwhelming majority of our recommendations are rooted in diet, nutritional support, physical activity, rest and stress-tempering lifestyle habits,” Dr. Sferra shares. “We like to say: you are what you eat, think and do.” Follow-up lab testing happens between two and six months later to measure progress and refine the plan.

COLLABORATION—AND INDEPENDENCE

While Dr. Sferra hopes for greater collaboration between functional and conventional medicine in the future, he believes most chronic cases can be effectively managed at NMR. “We don’t replace primary care, but we can handle the majority of issues patients come to us for,” he notes. “When needed, we absolutely consult specialists to ensure comprehensive care.”

THE REWARD: ANSWERS, CLARITY AND HOPE

For many patients, NMR represents the first time their concerns are heard in full—and the first time they see data that aligns with how they feel. “To help someone who has searched for answers for years is incredibly rewarding,” Dr. Sferra reflects. “Functional medicine isn’t alternative. It’s simply a deeper level of investigation—especially for the chronic issues conventional testing hasn’t explained.” Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation Address: 399 Campus Drive, Somerset Phone: 908-252-0242 Website: nmrnj.com JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Reinventing the Classic MEATLOAF ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DAVID BURKE

Serves 6

INGREDIENTS: • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 large onion, finely diced • 1/2 cup finely diced celery • 1 pound lean ground beef • 1 cup barbecue sauce • 1 cup well-drained diced tomatoes

• 1 cup finely diced jalapeño Jack cheese • 4 large eggs • 2 cups bread crumbs • Salt and pepper • 2 tubes thawed frozen croissant dough • 4 cups croutons • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Meatl oaf Bun dt Ca k e

INSTRUCTIONS:

46

1. Heat olive oil in a medium sauté pan over medium heat. Add garlic, onion and celery; sauté about 4 minutes, until softened but not browned. Set aside to cool. 2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. 3. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, barbecue sauce, tomatoes, cheese, cooled vegetables and 3 eggs. Lightly mix with your fingers. Add bread crumbs, season with salt and pepper, and blend gently without breaking up the cheese. 4. Roll croissant dough into 2-inch balls. In a small bowl, whisk the remaining egg with 1 tablespoon water. 5. Spray a nonstick bundt pan. Press croutons into the bottom in a tight, even layer. Spread meat mixture over croutons. Top with croissant balls, brush with egg wash and sprinkle with poppy seeds. 6. Bake for about 45 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer registers 145 degrees. Rest 10 minutes, then invert onto a platter. Slice with a serrated knife.

Ab o u t C h e f D a v i d B u r k e New Jersey–born chef and restaurateur David Burke has spent decades championing playful, precision-driven American cooking. Known for elevating comfort classics with technique and showmanship, he brings the same rigor to a Sunday roast as to a tasting menu. Burke’s restaurants span New Jersey and beyond, and he remains a visible mentor in local kitchens and culinary classrooms.

Meatloaf, that fixture of home cooks’ repertoires, is not as American as you might think. Its origins as a way to use meat scraps date to Roman times, and today many cultures claim their own variations, including those throughout Western Europe, South America, Asia and the Middle East. The common denominator is the same: ground meat mixed with binders and seasonings, baked or steamed and often shaped into a loaf. Meatloaf’s popularity is rooted in its practicality as a protein stretcher, its simple preparation and its universally comforting nature. It’s also one of the great second-day dishes. A cold slice is a treasured treat—all it really needs is a swipe of mayo, though I’ve been known to add a dab of chutney. And then there are meatloaf pancakes. Once your batter is bubbling on the griddle, place a slice of meatloaf in the center of each pancake, then flip. The meat caramelizes on the bottom while the batter cooks around it, creating a perfect breakfast or brunch centerpiece. Meatloaf is endlessly adaptable. While we tend to think of it as beef-based, it doesn’t have to be. It can be made with almost any meat, organ meats included or omitted. The key is balancing the meat, liquid (milk or cheese), bread and eggs—essentially a meat custard that needs proper seasoning to reach its full potential. I once developed a duck meatloaf with cornbread that was delicious, and I created what I called “Millionaire’s Meatloaf” for a menu, which included shrimp chili as well as beef. It was such a hit that The New York Times ran the recipe. I’m proud to say it has hundreds of five-star reviews, partly because the beef portion stands on its own as a memorably flavorful meatloaf. You don’t have to go far outside the box to elevate the classic version. My meatloaf bundt cake (recipe below) does exactly that with the addition of a crouton base and croissant-dough topping. The bread absorbs the rendered fat, turning irresistibly crisp and savory—the bread might be the best part. Visually, the meatloaf bundt cake is a showstopper, making it worthy of company.

Winter Skin RESET: The Best Time to Renew, Restore and Reveal Your Healthiest Skin Yet Bellezza Si Esthetics shares expert advice on seasonal treatments, event prep and the science behind glowing winter skin. As temperatures drop and the air becomes drier, winter creates an ideal environment for deeper skin restoration. With less sun exposure, more time spent indoors and a natural shift toward renewal, the season offers the perfect window for advanced treatments that often require downtime. At Bellezza Si Esthetics in Morristown, owner Caterina Castaldo and her niece, Caterina De Mattia, say aligning your skincare with the colder months can dramatically improve hydration, texture and luminosity. “Winter is the perfect time to resurface the skin,” Castaldo says. “With less sun exposure and fewer environmental stressors, your skin can heal, regenerate and absorb treatments more effectively.” De Mattia agrees. “The colder months naturally make the skin drier and duller. That makes it the ideal season to exfoliate, oxygenate and stimulate collagen and elastin.”

48

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | L I FE + CU LT U RE

WHY WINTER TREATMENTS WORK BETTER

Treatments like chemical peels, Exion Fractional RF, EMface and mechanical exfoliation rely on minimal UV exposure and controlled healing conditions—something winter delivers naturally. Dry, cold air also means clients often see faster results with resurfacing. “Sloughing off dead keratosis allows oxygenation to feed the skin properly and detoxify,” Castaldo explains. “Lymphatic treatments this time of year help stimulate collagen and elastin— something we all need more of as we age.” Every treatment plan at Bellezza Si begins with a full consultation and detailed skin analysis to evaluate elasticity, hydration and tone. This approach is supported by the expertise of practitioners like Anneliese Sepaniak, LMT, a New Jersey Licensed Massage Therapist and educator who has been practicing since 1985. Her clinical and educational work brings an integrative approach to therapeutic bodywork, bridging evidence-informed manual therapy with holistic wellness and movement science. “Your skin is only as good as its ability to absorb,” Castaldo says. “Oxygenation and resurfacing are essential. We always customize treatments based on a full consultation and in-depth analysis.” Winter also allows clients to complete treatment series consistently, ensuring the best long-term outcomes.

POST-TREATMENT CARE IN COLD WEATHER

Cooler air and indoor heating can make skin more sensitive after advanced treatments. Bellezza Si emphasizes restorative, hydrating routines—especially from December through March. “Hydration is everything in winter,” De Mattia says. “A soothing cleanser, toner, hydrating serum and a protective balm or oil help seal moisture and support recovery.”

Their signature Bellezza Si regimen includes: • Soothing cleanser • Toner • Intensive hydrating serum • Intensive hydrating cream • Universal oil or balmAll Bellezza Si products are handcrafted and formulated in Italy, blending artisanal tradition with advanced skincare science to deliver deeply nourishing, high-performance results.

BRIDAL & EVENT PREP: WHEN TO START

For clients preparing for weddings or major events, Castaldo recommends starting treatments at least six months in advance. “For major events like weddings, clients should start prepping at least six months ahead,” she says. “Your skin needs time to adjust—and that’s how we achieve truly transformative results.” Bellezza Si’s most requested event-focused services include: • Lash lift and tint • Brow lamination and tint • Sun Glow treatment for a natural, bronzed tone • EMface and EMface Eyes for lift and contour • Exion hyaluronic treatments to naturally plump and hydrate the lips “Sun Glow, EMface, and brow and lash services are incredible event-ready treatments,” De Mattia says. “They elevate the look with little to no downtime while keeping the client looking natural—emphasizing and enhancing their natural beauty.” Consistency remains essential. “The routine has to be realistic, consistent and tailored to the client’s lifestyle,” Castaldo adds.

Bellezza Si Esthetics Essentials

QUICK FIXES FOR LAST-MINUTE GLOW

For clients working with tighter timelines, Bellezza Si offers several high-impact options. “Dermaplaning, lash lifts, brow lamination and Sun Glow are our favorite quick fixes,” De Mattia shares. “They give instant radiance and makeup goes on beautifully, with minimal downtime.” Pre-event facials and makeup trials also help ensure the skin is healthy, hydrated and ready for product application.

EXPERT ADVICE, TRENDS AND COMMON MISTAKES

One of the biggest winter skincare mistakes Bellezza Si sees is choosing treatments from generic spa menus rather than personalized plans. “The biggest mistake is choosing treatments from generic spa menus,” Castaldo says. “Your skin is unique. It deserves a tailored approach.” Winter’s trending ingredients are also shaping results. “We’re excited about ceramides, peptides and hyaluronic acid,” Castaldo says. “They strengthen the barrier, boost hydration and support healthy regeneration.”

“Be selective,” De Mattia says. “Don’t fall for every trend on social media. Speak to a professional—less is better.” Castaldo adds, “Our focus is always on synchronizing your skin. We support collagen, elastin and long-term regeneration. Consistency and education are everything.” Bellezza Si emphasizes steady routines, expert guidance and treatments that support the skin’s natural ability to repair. With advanced modalities and decades of experience, the team remains committed to long-term transformation, not quick fixes. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SOM E R S E T HI L L S

A C om mu n it y of Wel l ne ss How the JCC Inspires Health, Connection, and Balance

The Fitness Department, JFit, led by Jessica Kichura, focuses on whole-person wellness. “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can,” Kichura shares, adding that JFit works to enhance quality of life through movement, support and connection.

AQUATICS: SAFE, SUPPORTIVE AND ACCESSIBLE

In Aquatics, Director Stephanie Johnson oversees programming for swimmers of every level. “We provide lessons and opportunities for all ages and abilities,” Johnson explains. With American Red Cross–certified staff and one of the lowest student-to-instructor ratios in Somerset County, safety remains central to every class. The aquatics center offers adaptive lessons, private and semi-private instruction, lap swimming and recreational swim opportunities. Saltwater pools, UV filtration and zero-entry access create a comfortable and inclusive environment. “Swimming can be the

FITNESS: A WHOLE-PERSON APPROACH

Programs include small-group training, specialty classes, personal training and community fitness events. Personal training continues to grow as members seek deeper guidance and accountability. “Training gives us the ability to meet members exactly where they are and build plans that strengthen confidence and long-term success,” Kichura notes. “It remains one of the most effective ways to develop healthy, lasting habits.” JFit’s class lineup features Barre and a robust selection of Les Mills programs. Group fitness also offers a supportive entry point for those who want to get moving and meet others. “Group classes give people a feel for our community, especially if the weight room feels intimidating,” Kichura adds.

As the new year begins, the JCC invites the community to discover a wellness journey that extends far beyond the gym — one built on care, connection and programs for every age and ability. Each January brings renewed motivation to build healthier habits and seek greater balance. At the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center, health and wellness are rooted in a shared commitment that unites people across all backgrounds. “Our goal is to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment where members can thrive,” explains Sarah Pollak, membership director. “We are here to help people become the best versions of themselves inside and out.” To kick off 2026, the JCC introduces a special New Year promotion: a $26 joiner fee for January. New members also receive a complimentary fitness orientation to help them navigate equipment, meet staff and explore the center’s offerings. “Our staff and members create a community that celebrates every milestone,” Pollak notes.

change your routine or your mood needs,” Johnson notes. “There’s nothing quite like swimming indoors while snow falls outside.” Aquatics also drives community impact. The JCC hosts the annual Somerset County Special Olympics swim competition and supports the Bridgewater Rising Tide Special Olympics Swim Team. “This partnership allows us to open our doors and give back,” Johnson adds. “Many of our swimmers volunteer as coaches and mentors — that’s what community is all about.”

SPORTS: MOVEMENT, TEAMWORK AND CONNECTION

The Sports Department strengthens JCC wellness offerings by promoting movement, skill development and teamwork. Adult basketball leagues bring players together in a competitive but friendly environment, while pickleball lessons and open sessions continue to grow. Youth tennis introduces children to foundational skills and coordination while building confidence. Together, these programs give members of all ages meaningful ways to stay active and connected.

A UNIFIED APPROACH TO WELLNESS

Collectively, the Fitness, Aquatics and Sports teams create pathways that support the whole person. Whether through structured training, a water fitness class or family-centered

activities, members can access tools that strengthen physical, mental and social well-being. “When fitness, aquatics and sports intersect, the result is balance,” Kichura reflects. “Through movement, mindfulness and connection, our members experience a deeper level of wellness.”

STAYING ACTIVE THROUGH WINTER

The directors encourage members to stay active throughout winter by focusing on small, attainable habits. Short walks, unplugged evening routines and family outings like holiday light walks help reduce stress. Johnson recommends indoor swim time for a peaceful break from the winter rush, while Pollak encourages families to join JCC holiday programs to stay engaged.

LOOKING AHEAD

Each department has clear goals for early 2026. Johnson plans to expand adaptive aquatics; Kichura aims to grow group fitness offerings and training options to fit varied schedules; and Pollak continues strengthening relationships with current members while welcoming new ones into the community. The JCC’s message for the new year is simple: Wellness thrives where people support one another. It’s found in the friendships formed between sets in the fitness center, the encouragement shared at the pool and the energy that fills the gym during group classes or sports leagues. This winter, the invitation is open: Come experience a community that moves with purpose, grows together and celebrates every step of the wellness journey. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “We want to make sure that all the members who come in see progress if they show up consistently.” - Bill Bonney

Step into Alpha Fit Club Basking Ridge and you’ll hear the music thumping, feel the lights pulsing and see a room full of people pushing, lifting and smiling their way through one of the most dynamic workouts in town. It’s not your average gym—it’s part nightclub, part boot camp and all community. Opened in 2022, the Basking Ridge studio is one of 20 Alpha Fit Club locations across New Jersey, offering a four-week

circuit-style workout program that caters to all ages and fitness levels. General Manager Bill Bonney knows the Alpha experience from both sides of the dumbbell—he started out as a member before joining the team. “Alpha Fit Club, for the most part, is a strength and conditioning, circuit-style, total-body group fitness experience,” Bonney says.

“Just coming in with a positive attit ude, meeting yourself where you’re at and st aying grounded in your goals is ever ything,” -Melissa McKenna “The typical format is six-minute stations—six stations around the room with one minute of rest to rotate and regather yourself. Everything from dumbbells to kettlebells, TRX cables, treadmills, bikes and rowers. The goal is to keep it fresh and fun on a daily basis for our members.”

METHOD TO THE MADNESS

Each month follows a four-week progression—capacity, tenacity, intensity and peak week—designed to help members see real results. “There’s a method to the madness,” Bonney says with a laugh. “We want to make sure that all the members who come in see progress if they show up consistently. But it’s for everyone—from the beginner just starting their fitness journey to the weekend warrior who’s been training all their life. There’s really something for everybody at Alpha Fit Club.”

SCALABLE FOR ALL

Co-founder and CEO Sam Tooley echoes that philosophy. “The workouts are designed to be challenging, but they’re scalable,” Tooley says. “We like to say we created the experience to accommodate everybody—from myself to my mom. We should be able to take the same class, side by side, and both walk out feeling like we got an appropriately challenging workout.” Weekday classes host up to 24 members, while weekends ramp things up with a seventh station for 28 participants.

THE ALPHA ATMOSPHERE

Tooley says Alpha Fit Club was built to bring a New York City–inspired boutique fitness experience to the suburbs. “The lights are low, the music’s bumping, the coach is on the mic and the programming itself is

58

fantastic,” he says. “So the product we feel is second to none.” For Bonney, though, it’s the people who make it special. “Inside the gym, the people that are there are the people I wanted to take care of,” he says. “I fell in love with the workout, I fell in love with the people inside the four walls and I wanted to make sure everything we did was above and beyond for them.”

COMMUNITY FIRST

That sense of belonging is what sets Alpha apart, Tooley says. “There are so many good options out there, but when somebody walks into a gym for the first time, it can be overwhelming,” he says. “Whether you don’t know anyone or don’t know what to do, it’s all very new. We take a lot of pride in making sure that anyone who walks into an Alpha Fit Club, no matter which location, feels at home and welcomed.”

COACHING THE ALPHA WAY

Head Coach Melissa McKenna keeps the energy high and the details sharp at the Basking Ridge studio. Her day starts before dawn—setting up the workout, prepping the space, greeting members and leading them through each session. “Just coming in with a positive attitude, meeting yourself where you’re at and staying grounded in your goals is everything,” McKenna says. “Don’t worry about what anybody else is doing—take it at your own pace. Everybody was once a beginner, and if that’s you, you’re the luckiest person in the room.” Whether you’re chasing personal records or just looking for a supportive space to move, sweat and connect, Alpha Fit Club Basking Ridge delivers a powerful reminder: fitness isn’t just about building strength—it’s about finding your people.
