HOW DOES MEDIATION WORK?

Mediation is a cooperative process that gives spouses control over their own divorce proceedings A neutral third-party mediator identifies issues and guides private, confidential discussions and negotiations The process is typically quicker and saves time and money without stepping foot into a courtroom

Mediation may not be for everyone. The process requires a willingness to participate, cooperate, be honest, and compromise. One or both spouses unable to comply may not be good candidates for mediation.

Kids and Pets: Leaving Pawprints and Footprints on Our Hearts

The August issue is always one of my favorites. What do kids and pets have in common? They both need us. Our care, attention, and intention shape how they are raised and who they become. Pets provide us with unconditional love and the chance to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could overlook the bond between kids and their furry friends? This bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility, and companionship.

For the past few years, we have run a Doggy Cover Model contest, and the community support has always been heartwarming. This year, over a thousand votes were cast, and Dulce emerged victorious. You can learn more about this adorable Cavapoo on page 18. Seeing the enthusiasm and participation from our community each year is truly inspiring. It’s moments like these that remind us of the joy and connection that pets bring into our lives.

With four daughters, there’s certainly no shortage of cooking going on in our house—and also no shortage of complaining that yet again, one or more of them don’t like what I prepared for dinner. Can we really live on mac n’ cheese every night? It’s time to break the cycle! On page 34, Small Time Foodie shares a few kid-approved recipes that everyone in the family will enjoy. I’m particularly excited about the creative twists on classic dishes that are both fun to make and delicious to eat. Hopefully, these recipes will bring some peace to our dinner table and maybe even inspire my daughters to expand their culinary skills.

As we wrap up this summer, it's a great time to reflect on the simple pleasures that children and pets bring into our lives. Whether it’s the laughter from a playful puppy or the excitement of kids exploring the outdoors, these moments are precious. The bond between children and their pets teaches them so much about love, trust, and responsibility.

We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life this month. Take this time to enjoy the last bit of summer before the chaos of September begins. Cherish these warm days and the opportunities they bring to connect and create lasting memories with your loved ones.

Cheers!

The chart below illustrates the importance of pricing your home correctly How your home compares to its recently sold peers is key when determining list price. This goes beyond price per square foot and number of bedrooms, and should also include location, floor plan, updates, and buyer-desired amenities As you can see from the chart below, homes priced correctly are selling at or above ask price Unsold homes have a widening gap between ask and those that sold The trend below closely correlates the importance of correctly pricing your home to achieve a successful sale. Following the loss of Vanessa DeRosa's mother to COVID earlier that year, Dulce became a vital source of comfort and healing during a challenging time.

Their bond goes beyond mere companionship, symbolizing resilience and the power of unconditional love. Dulce's presence brings light to the darkness of grief, as DeRosa navigates the healing process.

CHERISHED CREATIONS

A Heartfelt Journey from Berkeley Heights to Beyond

In Berkeley Heights there lies a center for compassion known as Cherished Creations. Founded in 1997 by David and Angela Grande, this organization has been a beacon of hope for seriously ill children and their families, igniting joy through heartfelt wishes.

“I started this in 1997 because all I wanted to do is help kids,” reflects Grande. “That's all I wanted to do - everything that other charities were not doing.”

Grande's passion for making a difference in children's lives was the driving force behind Cherished Creations. Alongside his wife, they envisioned an organization that not only granted wishes but also provided support to children facing various health challenges, regardless of their prognosis.

Their daughter-in-law, Suzanne Grande, joined the team, bringing her creativity and dedication to the cause. “I wanted to help!” Suzanne shares.    Together, the Grande family and Doreen Whitney have orchestrated a symphony of generosity, organizing annual events like wine tastings with David Wagner of Adelphia Wine Market, golf outings, and walkathons to raise funds and awareness. “Your ticket is a 100% donation to the charity,” Suzanne emphasizes, highlighting the organization's commitment to transparency and impact.   CONTINUED

But Cherished Creations is more than just fundraising; it is about making meaningful connections and enhancing the lives of children. “I never wanted a house with nine bathrooms and 19 bedrooms,” Grande laughs. “I only need one. So, what are we going to do with any extra money? And how can we make a difference?”

Their impact extends far beyond Berkeley Heights, reaching children across the United States. “We fulfill wishes across the US from birth through age 21,” Suzanne explains. “We've granted wishes in 48 states, touching the lives of countless families.”

One of their most impactful initiatives is the Walkathon, a partnership with Hughes Elementary School that spans over two decades. “They’ve donated close to $140,000 over the last 24 years,” Suzanne beams proudly. “It's incredible to see the community come together to support our wish kids.”

In addition to wish fulfillment, Cherished Creations invests in innovative solutions to enhance children's well-being. “We bought our very first VGo Robot with the funds donated by students at Hughes School,” Suzanne reveals, her face lighting up with excitement. “It's like FaceTime on wheels, allowing sick children to stay connected with their peers and education.”

As Cherished Creations continues to evolve, the Grande family remains steadfast in their mission to spread joy and hope. With every wish granted, every smile inspired, they reaffirm their commitment to making the world a brighter, more compassionate place for children in need.

TRUELEAF KITCHENS SHARES TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR REMODEL DOG-FRIENDLY

TrueLeaf Kitchens, under the leadership of owner Jim Barna, based in Basking Ridge doesn't just offer cookie-cutter solutions; they tailor their designs to meet the specific needs of each client, and they even tailor designs to your furry friends and little ones.

PROJECT ONE: THE LUXURIOUS DOG WASH AREA

Barna enjoyed working on a project where TrueLeaf transformed a side entrance space into a luxurious dog wash area. He recalls, “This was really a unique situation and projects like this are definitely great to showcase for pet and dog lovers alike.” From the beginning of the project, TrueLeaf addressed the practical needs of owners of two dogs. Barna elaborates, “We created a walk-in shower without the glass for easy washing of the homeowner's two large dogs.” The integration of stainless steel undermount sinks as easy-fill dog bowls reflects TrueLeaf's attention to detail. Barna emphasizes, “We were able to use the tile that she had from the floor up onto the wall to integrate the whole dog wash area.”

PROJECT TWO: THE INNOVATIVE DOG CRATE ENVIRONMENT

Moving beyond conventional solutions, TrueLeaf embarked on a project to incorporate dog crates into the kitchen space. Barna describes the process, stating, “We took about a four-foot-wide cabinet in their kitchen and instead of doing regular doors on it, we did an open-weave wire insert in the door, a little like chicken wire.” TrueLeaf's approach ensures that pets have their own comfortable retreats within the home. Barna explains, “Even when the dogs are in their crates they can see each other and be a part of what is going on in the kitchen area.  And then inside, we have plush dog bed cushions to make it their favorite place to go to feel safe and cozy.”

PROJECT THREE: THE HOMEWORK HAVEN

In addition to crafting pet-friendly spaces, TrueLeaf creates functional areas for families. One example is the incorporation of homework spaces within kitchen environments. Barna says, “We've done desk areas for children so that they can sit either just off the kitchen or nearby instead of having to be locked up in their rooms.” TrueLeaf's approach to homework spaces mirrors their philosophy of personalized design, catering to the evolving needs of modern families.

Barna emphasizes, “It's just about creating a great space for the family to interact in.” These homework havens not only promote academic productivity but also encourage family bonding, as parents can oversee their children's studies while preparing meals or engaging in other household activities.

TrueLeaf creates environments where pets, their owners and little ones can thrive together. From luxurious dog wash areas to fun homework spaces, TrueLeaf Kitchens has a dedication to meeting the diverse needs of modern families.

Ready for some simple additions to your weekly dinner rotation? I’m always looking for new  recipes to add to my repertoire to keep things fresh and my kids interested in the dinner I am preparing instead of ordering “off-menu.” Two keys that tend to work for my kids are giving them ownership—that is, letting them help me in the kitchen—and making sure it’s tasty.

I’m happy to share these dishes from my own collection. Sometimes my kids like to help, but even when they’re too tired from the summer sun, I know these are quick and easy options.

THE MAGIC

OF LEARNING

THE BLAUSTEIN EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER

The four’s class celebrating Shabbat at the BECC

The Blaustein Early Child Center at the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center, better known as the BECC, has served young children for the past 25 years. Education shapes young minds, and the BECC takes pride in providing a top-tier experience for all their students. Led by Adena Feinstein, Director, and Amy Weinstein, Assistant Director, the duo shares an innovative approach to early childhood education.

“At the BECC, we believe in the magic of learning through play and exploration,” shares Feinstein, “Our curriculum is a tapestry of curiosity and discovery, where children lead the way, and teachers serve as guides.”

This educational approach of child-led, teacher-directed learning shines in every aspect of the center’s educational philosophy. Through Creative Curriculum, children embark on immersive journeys of discovery. Topics are very diverse, including tree studies, exercise and pet care. “We want learning to feel like an adventure, where every moment sparks curiosity and wonder,” adds Weinstein.

Learning at the BECC always extends beyond the classroom, incorporating activities outside the building. With a sprawling 14-acre property at their disposal, children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and engage with nature firsthand. As part of their curriculum, the children watch plants grow in the center’s Sensory Garden, even taking part in the upkeep process by maintaining them.

“There's something magical about watching a child's eyes light up as they discover a new plant or measure the height of a towering tree,” reflects Feinstein. “It's these moments that lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.”

Throughout the school year, the children get to experience the facilities offerings like the Steger Gymnasium, and Aquatics Center, giving them a variety of extracurricular activities beyond the classroom. Here the children learn to play team sports, as well as crucial water safety skills. In the warmer months, the children get to play on the Amy and Seth Geldzahler Splash Pad, a 15-element ADA compliant water activity.

Both Feinstein and Weinstein share a deep passion for traditional learning and education beyond the classroom. “For us, the BECC is more than just a preschool—it's a second home,” Weinstein says. “We're not just shaping young minds; we're building a community.”

Community lies at the heart of the BECC’s mission. The JCC is a place where all are always welcome, and this extends to every program offered. “Diversity is our strength,” emphasizes Feinstein. “Every child, regardless of background or status, is valued and celebrated here.”

Blaustein Early Childhood Center stands as a reflection of the power of curiosity, community, and connection—a place where young hearts soar and dreams take flight.

Whether your pup has the obedience of a dog show finalist, or social behavior that makes you want to play dead around others, you can develop more owner confidence with help from this expert trainer.

ARTICLE BY LISA MOYER

STYLED BY ANGELA BROOCKERD

“Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

“Socializing your dog is beneficial for both dogs and their owners,” says Taryn Tyler, a certified dog trainer. “It creates confidence for both dogs and owners and displaces the anxiety we feel when our dogs aren’t behaving like we want them to.”

Taryn says that boundaries can be learned by dogs of any age.

“There’s a nasty perception along the ‘can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ line of thinking,” she says.

“While you can’t take a dog with serious behavioral issues and completely turn them around 180 degrees, you can make improvements in how you understand your dog and how they understand you. Dog training isn’t just for struggling pups either. Creating a relationship between you and your canine based on confidence, reliability and reward can turn a good dog into a great dog.”

Taryn stresses that teaching a dog to sit or stay is less about tricks and more about the relationship that builds between animal and owner. “That, in turn, fosters an environment where the next time a family hosts Thanksgiving or has friends over, the owner and their dogs fall into the habit of obeying commands because of the confidence built through all the work put in beforehand.”

Even dogs with a troubled history can achieve improvement.

“We all love our dogs, but they can be stressful when they can’t seem to click in our home environments.

DOG SOCIALIZING TIPS:

• Socializing is more than taking your dog in public. A guy can dump a bunch of mulch in your driveway and spread it , but he’s not a landscaper until he’s following a plan. When the doorbell rings or a visitor comes into the house, what’s our expectation for the dog? When we’re in public and the dog’s attention is diverted, what’s our plan to refocus them? Socialization is 99 percent working on small steps as part of a larger plan.

• Socializing isn’t about our dogs being the center of attention in public. Everyone loves seeing a dog, but our best outcome for the dog is to go unnoticed. Sitting by our side, ignoring external stimuli, remaining calm— those are things we strive for when socializing a dog.

“While you can’t take a dog with serious behavioral issues and completely turn them around 180 degrees, you can make improvements in how you understand your dog and how they understand you.”

• When socializing dogs with other dogs, start small. Take a walk with another dog to get them to just exist in the same vicinity. Once they’re able to not be excited by the other dog, work on limited playing in controlled environments.

• If someone comes into your home, let them know what boundaries you’re working on with your dog. You can even suggest asking them to carry a few treats and work on some of the behaviors your dog is already comfortable with.

Once your dog is able to socialize with other pets, playdates are a great way to encourage good play behavior. One way to celebrate your pup’s birthday is to celebrate with their favorite furry friends. Here are a few helpful tips for making your gathering a success.

• Set up play areas for your furry guests to enjoy. This can include a doggy pool or splash pad, chew toys, frisbees, and don’t forget the pet-friendly bubbles.

• Offer party guests birthday attire such as a birthday hat, bandana or party outfit. Set up a photo wall for pet owners to get photos with their furry friends in their birthday outfits. Better yet, make it a costume competition, and invite guests to come dressed up ready to show off their pup’s attire.

• Create a treat display with a pet-friendly birthday cake and various chewy snacks for guests to give their pups.

• Party favors are a must to end your festivities with a bang. Fill party bags with bouncy balls, treats, and pet-friendly bubbles to send your guests off with a smile.
