Cupid's Corner: A Letter from the Publishers Ah, February—the month that makes January look like the awkward third wheel of winter. As humorist Jim Gaffigan cleverly quips, “Without Valentine’s Day, February would be…well, January.” This February 14th marks our 15th anniversary of tying the knot and an impressive 21 years since our first date. If someone were to ask if we’ve changed, we’d confidently assert, “Not a bit!” Yet, a glance at the photo to the right might suggest otherwise. Sure, a few extra pounds have joined me, and Jake has taken a bold step towards a more aerodynamic hairstyle. But who needs a sculpted physique or a full head of hair when armed with the potent weapon of a shared history? Now, while the world speculates about whether we have grand plans for this milestone (spoiler alert: we don’t), it’s important to set the record straight. Our entire existence is already one grand, ongoing celebration. We don’t reserve festivities for anniversaries or cosmic alignments. Just a few weeks back, we reveled in the delights of Cancun, rubbing shoulders with the elite publishers of City Lifestyle’s President’s Club. Why bother with a traditional candlelit dinner when you can trade it for tropical cocktails, contagious laughter and the company of a lively bunch on a sun-kissed beach, right? Speaking of celebrations, cue the drumroll! In this edition, we are delighted to present the victors of our Annual Readers’ Choice Awards. “I love the roofing business because what we do is a big project that changes the look of the house forever,” says Dan Keller, whose company, George J. Keller & Sons, has shingled tens of thousands of houses in Northern New Jersey during the last four decades. The family-owned and -operated company, which is based in Flanders, was founded by Keller’s father, the George referenced in its name. In addition to Dan, who now owns it, the 60-employee staff includes his sister, Cory, who is in charge of operations, his brother, Matt, who handles repairs, and his wife, Heather, who is the marketing chief. George J. Keller & Sons, which also specializes in siding and windows, is one of only 33 contractors in the nation that has been designated a member of the GAF Roofing 3-Star President’s Club. It also has received the highest designations from the CertainTeed and James Hardie siding companies and from Andersen windows. We asked Dan to give us tips on doing a house makeover that’s more than shingle-deep. CONTINUED >

MY HOUSE IS LOOKING A LITTLE TIRED AND UNTIDY. ARE THERE ANY INEXPENSIVE THINGS I CAN DO TO RATCHET UP ITS CURB APPEAL?

For a quick cosmetic fix, we can clean your roof, replace your gutters and add or replace shutters. These things make a world of difference and usually can be done for under $5,000. If you do need to replace the roof, that can cost around $14,000.

WHAT DOES CLEANING THE ROOF INVOLVE?

Sometimes there’s algae buildup that leaves black stains; we have a proprietary formula that will erase them without harming the asphalt shingles. The treatment, which is environmentally friendly and will not hurt the plants in your yard, will also make the shingles look brighter.

AH, THE SHINGLES. I REALLY HATE THE COLOR OF MINE—THEY ARE BLACK! WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THAT?

Other than replacing your roof—and we don’t recommend doing that unless you’re having issues and really need to do it—there’s nothing that will change the color of the shingles. When you are ready for a roof replacement, though, there are 24 colors to choose from, including browns, whites, blues, greens, reds and yes, even black.

I’M REALLY LOOKING FOR AN EXCUSE TO CHANGE THE BLACK SHINGLES. DON’T THEY ABSORB MORE HEAT AND MAKE THE HOUSE HOTTER?

When you talk about heat absorption, color matters but not as much as you think because all the shingles are made of asphalt. A darker shingle will be hotter but not substantially. And we take care of the heat issue by venting the attic so it stays cool.

YOU MENTIONED CHANGING THE GUTTERS. ARE YOU PRO OR CON ABOUT GUTTER GUARDS?

In my experience, they create more problems than they help because there’s no one that’s perfect so they do allow some debris in. They also promote ice damming in the winter because they freeze immediately and create blockages.

ONCE I’VE SWITCHED EVERYTHING UP, HOW DO I KEEP THINGS LOOKING NICE?

We recommend getting the roof and gutters inspected and cleaned twice a year. It’s also a good idea to walk around your attic, especially after heavy rainstorms, to see whether there are leaks. If you do this, your roof will last much longer than those of your neighbors.

SPEAKING OF LONGEVITY, JUST HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT A NEW ROOF TO LAST?

The roofs we install come with a 50-year guarantee, which provides 100 percent coverage for any manufacturing defect.

THAT’S AMAZING! MY ROOF IS LIKELY TO OUTLIVE ME! ARE DEFECTS COMMON?

Since 2006, when I joined the company, we have had only three warranty claims, and all were color-related. The manufacturer honored the guarantee, and we replaced each roof.

WHAT’S THE GREATEST MISCONCEPTION THAT PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT ROOFERS?

Well, there actually are two: They think roofing companies are unreliable—which is why we make it a point to call everyone back in a timely manner even if it’s only to tell them that we can’t help them—and they don’t realize that roofing is a year-round business. DECODING FLOWERS’ SECRET MEANINGS

During the Victorian era, flowers were used as a way to send nonverbal messages to people, whether they were current suitors, secret crushes, beloved friends or family members. It was common in households to have a card that showed the meanings—some albeit fluid— posted to readily decipher what sentiment was being expressed by an arriving arrangement (lest awkward misinterpretation could lead to embarrassment). At some point over time, we have lost the “meaning in the message” of the presentation of flowers, defaulting during this Season of Love to red roses (meaning: love, passion). This year, try a different approach: If you plan on giving flowers to your significant other, mother, children or best friend, consider an arrangement that conveys your personal connection with the recipient. Laura Clare, owner of Laura Clare Design in Far Hills, enjoys working with clients to create memorable, meaningful arrangements that transcend the expected. “When men call and ask for red roses, I inquire about the recipient’s favorite colors to get them to start thinking of something that would have more meaning,” she says. “If she loves purples and lavenders, we could create an arrangement of 25 purple- and lavender-colored roses or an ombre design of white roses blending into lavender blending into purple.” There are so many ways to interpret Valentine’s Day beyond roses. One of Clare’s favorite arrangements is based on “the magic of the season,” using spring flowers like tulips, ranunculus and hyacinths or placing a red bloom against a backdrop of flowering branches like white or pink quince or pussy willow. Consider an arrangement that is horizontal rather than tall, which can more easily be placed on a dining room table or a desk. (It is also a more fool-proof design for pets who like to knock over vases.) “Everyone just assumes Valentine’s Day is the ‘boyfriend-girlfriend’ concept, but it’s not. It’s a day to spread love to all sorts of people in your life,” Clare says. “I’ve seen people giving flowers to their mothers or grandmothers, women giving arrangements to their friends and fathers buying bouquets for their children. Women can send arrangements with a more masculine feel—like a beautiful bunch of all-white tulips in a sleek base—to their husbands.”

Want to channel the Victorian communication style? Consider pansies (“thoughts”) if you want to show someone you think of them often. “However, this could have a hidden meaning,” Clare notes a bit mischievously. Or tulips for a bold declaration of love. “Here, it could be a sent to a secret affection,” she says. There are nuances in red you can explore as well: A red rose openly expresses feelings of love, while a red tulip is a confession of love. CONTINUED >

Lauren Stoll has one mission: To be as present and engaged with her children as much as possible. Wait. The Basking Ridge digital influencer/content creator behind Instagram’s popular Ginny’s Closet found that transitioning from being a young, married woman to a mom took some serious adjustment. When she started her Instagram account a decade ago, the focus was on fashion: highlighting trends and giving advice on curating pieces in a wardrobe. She incorporates her children—Sloane, 7, and Landon, 4—in showing moms how to weave bonding activities with their kids into their daily lives. Whether it is cooking together, taking a walk to pick wildflowers, dancing in the kitchen pretending ladles are microphones or having fancy dress-up picnics in her living room, Stoll shows harried moms how to step away from the chaos of the day and immerse themselves into childhood magic. February marks National Children’s Dental Health Month, which advocates for good oral hygiene habits to establish a foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Dental health in children is about more than aesthetics; it is crucial for their overall well-being. Mary Rostami, a dentist at Basking Ridge Dental Group, says that there are essential reasons why children’s dental health deserves special attention. “Parents might think that baby teeth are not as important and they might not need to brush or floss as much, but they can still get infections,” she says. “Your kids could have pain. If you don’t take care of it, they get a cavity. It’s very important that you take care of children’s teeth from the minute they erupt.” Prevention of dental issues includes teaching children good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing and flossing, which can prevent common dental problems like cavities, gum disease and tooth decay. These issues can cause pain, discomfort and lead to more serious health problems if left unaddressed. The dentists advise that brushing should be done at morning and night, and if possible at lunchtime, especially if children consume a lot of sugar—and this month, Valentine's treats. Research shows a strong connection between oral health and overall health. Poor dental hygiene has been linked to conditions like diabetes, heart disease and respiratory infections. “I tell parents ‘Don’t give them anything with sugar, milk or juice before they go to bed, because they cause problems,’” Rostami says. Azita Emami, another dentist in the group, advises that parents start bringing kids to the dentist as early as age two. “For a first visit, I examine their teeth and do some cleaning, but if the child is scared I never push them,” she says. “I don’t want them to have a bad

experience with the visit. I only go as far as they let us. If they start getting scared, then we stop and give them some toothbrushes to encourage them. We then ask the mom or dad to bring them back in a few months, because for kids even a few months makes a big difference.”

Cozy Tomato Soup When the temperatures dip, I’m all about soup season. It’s like a hug in a bowl. Am I right? This recipe is a go-to favorite for me when I’m craving something Italian but want a cozy soup recipe to feed my soul. There are lots of great reasons to eat tomato soup, which offers several potential health benefits: It’s a good source of essential nutrients such as vitamins C and K, potassium, folate and antioxidants like lycopene that may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals; the potassium content can help regulate blood pressure; it is low in calories and when made with whole ingredients it can contain dietary fiber.

Roasting the tomatoes first enhances the overall taste of the soup. It caramelizes the tomatoes’ natural sugars and intensifies their flavor, resulting in a sweeter and richer taste. It also adds complexity to the flavor profile: The slightly smoky and earthy notes from the roasting process can balance the acidity of the tomatoes. Roasting also can help make tomatoes more tender, which makes it easier to blend them into a smooth and velvety soup. The roasting also releases a wonderful aroma and can reduce the overall cooking time. It's a great treat to have while snuggling up with your significant other after coming in from the winter cold.

IN GR E D I E N T S • 2 28 oz cans whole peeled tomatoes • 5 cloves garlic, casing removed

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 500° F. 2. In a roasting pan, add all ingredients but the heavy cream or half-and-half.

• 1 large onion, rough chopped • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar • 48 oz beef, chicken or vegetable stock • Salt and pepper to taste • ¼ to ½ c heavy cream or half-and-half

3. Remove from the oven and pour into a large stock pot. 4. Add heavy cream or half-and-half. 5. Blend until smooth with immersion blender. (If you do not have one, carefully blend in a blender as the liquid will be hot.) 6. Heat on medium for 5 to 10 minutes to warm the cream. 7. Serve immediately in bowls. 8. Sprinkle shaved parmesan or shredded mozzarella on top. 9. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley.
