LIFESTYLE LETTER

Cheers to 2 Years!

January 2024 PUBLISHERS

Dear Somerset Hills Community, Happy Anniversary! As we stand on the cusp of another year, it brings me immense joy to extend my heartfelt gratitude and warm wishes to each one of you. Two years ago, we embarked on a journey together with the inaugural edition of Somerset Hills City Lifestyle, and what an incredible ride it has been! In addition to being our anniversary, I’d also like to wish you a Happy New Year! Isn’t it amusing how we make New Year’s resolutions with the best of intentions, only to find ourselves caught in a dance with temptation and the occasional indulgence? The treadmill beckons, the salad bowl smiles and the novel you promised to read sits patiently on the bedside table, all while the allure of cozy blankets and comfort food proves to be a formidable adversary. It’s a universal struggle, a testament to the human spirit’s eternal battle between aspirations and the alluring call of familiarity. So, do you follow through with your resolutions or gleefully break free from the self-imposed chains of discipline? Whichever path you choose, remember that the journey toward health and wellness is a marathon, not a sprint. It’s okay to stumble, to savor that slice of cake and to relish in the simple joys that bring a twinkle to your eye. As we kick off the year with our January Health + Wellness Issue, we invite you to join us on a delightful exploration of self-care and balance. In these pages, you’ll find a trove of insights and tips to inspire your journey toward a healthier and more vibrant you. Our contributors have poured their expertise into articles that touch on physical well-being, mental resilience and the pursuit of that elusive equilibrium between work and play. This issue is a celebration of the marvelous complexity that is you. It’s a reminder that health and wellness are not one-size-fits-all but a personal odyssey where you set the course. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your lives, for sharing your stories and for making Somerset Hills City Lifestyle a true reflection of the remarkable community we call home. As we raise a glass to the two-year mark, let’s toast to the memories made, the friendships forged, and the stories yet to be told. Happy Anniversary, Somerset Hills!

IS IT STILL A GOOD TIME TO SELL MY HOME?

While home sales are down by 21% in Bernards Township through October, listings are down by 30%! The decrease in home sales is actually due to a lack of homes to sell. Nowhere to go? Buyers understand that sellers may need time to find their next home. There are several plans that offer sellers extended move-out dates, while allowing buyers to lock in rates. The main competitive advantage to sellers right now is to have their homes be among only a handful of available homes on the market and to look its best. Most homes in our area continue to receive multiple offers after the first weekend on the market. One size does not fit all. My goal is your goal - to provide you with the best custom-tailored experience to achieve the highest price possible using the tools and support needed to cross the finish line. I'm with you every step of the way. After all, I'm also your neighbor for over 20 years!

To Coach Karli Saur, Family Fitness is Part of the Daily Routine

Train Like a Mommy When Karli Saur wakes in the morning, she takes a quick shower, dons workout clothes, gets her children—Siena, 2, and Stetson, 5 months—breakfast and launches into a morning of fun family exercise. If the weather is nice, she begins by pushing the kids in a double stroller through her hilly Bernardsville neighborhood, doing sets of walking lunges at every incline. “With the kids in the stroller, I’m pushing about 65 pounds,” she says. Their destination is a nearby park, where she lets Siena run around the playground while she places Stetson on a blanket and does a series of push-ups over him. “I place my hands on the outside and straddle him on my knees because I have not yet progressed to being on my toes. Every time I lower myself, I give his belly a little kiss or touch my nose to his in an Eskimo kiss, then I rise back up,” she says. “He loves it; he’s giggling the whole time.” Next, it’s Siena’s turn. Saur jumps up to chase her up and down the slides and jungle gym. “I’m full-scale running, chasing her back to Stetson where we run loops around him. Then, I go back to my push-ups or a plank over Stetson. Now, Siena is next to me, imitating my push-ups and planks—and forming great habits,” she says. “In 45 minutes, we have all gotten our exercise and the wiggles out at the park. I’m fully sweating and we all go home refreshed for lunch.” This might seem like a “super mom” thing to do, but Saur—known as “Coach Karli”—is on a mission to show women, especially new mothers, that they can keep a balance between caring for their family, working and staying fit.

Saur and her husband, JJ, are both lifelong athletes. JJ, a former competitive lacrosse player, and Saur, who played Division 3 soccer and softball in college, are dedicated runners who have completed several marathons and ultra-marathons. “We have this affinity for physical health as a family, and when we got pregnant, we decided that our life would be no different once we had children,” she says. After college, Saur worked in the fitness industry for a decade, instructing at high-profile gyms and fitness studios in Miami and New York City before launching Iron Diamond Fitness in 2015, where she focuses on areas such as pre- and post-natal care, weight loss, habit restructuring and endurance training. As a full-time mom who balances career and family life, Saur understands her fellow mothers’ struggles to maintain fitness, health and well-being while navigating daily life. “When I worked at the gyms, my clients were mostly pre- and post-natal clients. I understood their needs were different,” she says. “There are so many considerations: morning sickness, concerns about eating enough to fuel your body, questions about exercising and continuing a program if you were a runner or on a weight loss plan.” Saur stresses the effect of hormones on overall health during pregnancy. “The extra hormones your body produces to allow it to prepare for childbirth also affects your joints and muscles,” she says. “For example, who expects that their ankles will change in ways other than retaining water during the third trimester? But hormone shifts cause weakness in your ankles, putting you at risk for rolling or spraining your ankle by doing ordinary actions like stepping from a car, wearing high heels or going for a jog.” Sensitive to busy moms’ schedules, Saur structures fitness programs around her clients’ schedules. “I can tailor fitness programs for you to do on your own, come to your house or have you come to mine. I even meet clients at the park for a fresh-air workout,” she says.

“It’s best to start with foundational work, like exercises to improve balance and stability.” Although doctors clear most women for exercise six weeks after birth, Saur stresses the need to ease back into a routine. “It takes up to 24 months to return to where you were physically prior to pregnancy. If you start running or doing crazy exercises, you’ll wind up with more issues down the road,” she says. “It’s best to start with foundational work, like exercises to improve balance and stability. So, instead of doing crunches, you’ll do a plank. Instead of running, you’ll do lateral slides on a slide board or work out on a spin bike.”

Finding the time to exercise as a new mom is easy—if you incorporate it into your daily routine. For example, while your child is playing, run up and down the stairs. If they are playing with blocks, squat down slowly, pick up a block, stand up, squat back down and return it. “This exercise helps you with flexibility and range of motion while working your cardiovascular system and filling your body with oxygen,” she says. When you’re pushing your child on the swing, see how many squats you can get in before she swings back. “My kids find all of this hilarious,” she says. “To them it’s a game; to me, it’s my workout.” Learn more at IronDiamondFitness.com.

FOR ANNA HACKMAN, ORGANIC HERBS ARE A WAY OF LIFE ARTICLE BY NANCY A. RUHLING PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIZ POLO, HAVANA PHOTOGRAPHY

My motto is “Get Naked. Be Happy!” Anna Hackman has accomplished a feat that many only dare to dream of: She changed careers, trading suits for overalls, and founded her organic-herbal farm, The Naked Botanical. Her five-acre farm in Mendham, where she lives with her husband, real estate investor Bob Gelber, inspired her curated collection of feel-good tonics, teas, salves and spices, which are sold in stores, at fairs and online. How did she do it? Sit down and take a sip of tea as she shares her story: I left real-estate law when my kids were younger because I couldn’t find consistent child care. Eighteen years ago, my husband and I decided to build a green home when this was just becoming a thing. It took two years to complete because finding vendors was tough. I decided to start growing vegetables because it was sustainable. I started with five heirloom tomato plants that I ordered from California. Being

new to gardening, I planted them in July, which is far too late. That first year, I got only three tomatoes. I was so thrilled that I froze some of the seeds, which I still have. I plant one to two of them every year because I love the taste of these tomatoes and it reminds me of how far I have come. That success led me to expand my garden. I started with broccoli, lettuce and beans then over the years added strawberries, chamomile, which gets beautiful flowers, and assorted vegetables and herbs. I ordered nine apple trees from California; they were called “trees,” but they were only twigs when they arrived, and a friend of mine gave me nine raspberry stalks because she didn’t know what to do with them. Today, I have over 44 raised beds planted with everything from squash, lovage, mint, peas, tomatoes and a host of medicinal herbs. I also have elderberry, blueberry, blackberry and raspberry bushes along with multiple in-ground herb beds. CONTINUED >

“I’m so happy on my farm that I want to make other people happy, too.”

30

LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | WE LLN E SS

I was growing things that people didn’t grow, and my initial idea was to provide food for my family, so I learned to can and preserve. Soon, I had so many herbs that I started selling them in bulk on Etsy. I still had too much left over, so I started making teas and asked people I knew to taste test them. Next, I started selling at farmers markets and craft fairs. One product led to another because people who go to these fairs always want something new. Plus, I was forced to invent new products because some years the plants just overproduced. Case in point: Two years ago, my apple trees produced so much fruit that I made 75 gallons of cider. That was the genesis of my simple syrups: Apple Chai Simple Syrup and Apple Ginger Turmeric Shots joined the family. I make my products in a commercial kitchen, and I do most of the work in the garden myself. A couple of guys help me mulch and compost, and I have a part-time assistant. My husband helps with the digging. Sometimes my kids join us. An average day on the farm is chaos; it really depends on the month. I don’t have a greenhouse. I have a hoop house, which has no heat, so I grow a lot of plants indoors with Grow Lights. My hoop house is reserved for plants that need more heat than our summers bear, such as ginger and turmeric. All of this sounds like fun—and it really is or I wouldn’t be doing it—but it’s also a lot of work. For instance, I hand-strip my herbs, throwing out the stems, which don’t have any taste. Doing this can

take an eight-hour day. Nobody, I mean nobody, does this. And I store everything in vacuum-sealed bags so that after the herbs are cut and dried, they will stay fresh and fragrant for years. People often ask me why I call it “The Naked Botanical.” It’s because everything I grow is certified organic, and I don’t use artificial or natural flavors in my products. It’s naked: It’s the real deal. My motto is “Get Naked. Be Happy!” I’m so happy on my farm that I want to make other people happy, too. Although my herbal products have healing and medicinal properties, I don’t really push that aspect because I want you to enjoy them and be in the moment. I want to give you five seconds to slow down and say of “You can do this and return to your life refreshed.” When you cook a meal or drink a cup of tea, it’s a Zen moment where you can step out of yourself. And my products are yummy; I’m focused on taste because it makes you happy, it puts a smile on your face in a world of full of anxiety. That’s why the colors of my packaging are bright and happy and the names—like “Lovage or Leave It” and “Kick Back and Chill”—are goofy, just like me. My greatest joy is seeing people being happy. Sometimes, people write me, telling me that I have really helped them; that’s my greatest reward. I’m constantly thanking my customers because this is not just a business, it’s joy to me. STAYING CONNECTED IS KEY TO MAINTAINING HEALTH AS WE AGE ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JILLIAN SPENCER

Engage. Contribute. Be a part of something bigger. Socialization is an important part of aging well because it enhances our overall quality of life in many ways. At its core, socialization combats isolation and loneliness, which improves mental and emotional well-being. Regular interaction also instills a sense of belonging and purpose, helping us boost our cognitive abilities as we age. When seniors engage with others, they also get more physical movement, reducing the risks of chronic disease and mobility issues. Many people opt to remain in their own homes as they age, which can be an isolating experience. “When they choose to live in a community of people their age that offers a wide range of activities like group exercise classes, religious services, volunteer opportunities and games, they flourish,” says Kelly Adams, Executive Director of Arbor Terrace Basking Ridge. “In fact, most people tell me their only regret is not making the choice sooner.” Arbor Terrace Basking Ridge, which opened this fall, is managed by The Arbor Company, which has over three decades of experience caring for seniors around the country. The residence offers three separate neighborhoods: Assisted Living, which provides extra care as needed; the Bridges Program, which is unique to the Arbor Company and offers cognitive support and extra safety measures for people in early-stage cognitive decline; and Evergreen, which is secure memory care for seniors with late-stage Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia. Socialization is important in aging well. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 20 percent of people over 65 have mild cognitive impairment, a condition in which cognitive changes are noticeable but not yet dangerous. While many senior communities offer assisted living and memory care, Arbor Terrace is unique in providing the Bridges neighborhood to serve the needs of people who require a bit more cognitive assistance but aren’t quite ready for memory care. Adams, whose background is in social work, has seen the positive results forged by seniors making deep connections with others through engagement. Activities at Arbor Terrace focus on the different abilities of the residents. “Levels of exercise vary: For some, activity might be venturing to the dining room every day for meals with friends, while more active residents will participate in a program in the onsite fitness center,” Adams says. Another drawback to aging at home is access to medical care. Making and keeping doctors’ appointments can be a challenge. “We are all

38

guilty of having pain that we let go on for longer than it should, but early detection is important,” Adams says. “At Arbor Terrace, we have regularly scheduled visits from doctors and medical providers to assist our residents. This way, issues are addressed in a timely manner and appointments are simple and convenient.” Arbor Terrace also offers physical, occupational and speech therapy onsite, which makes the logistics of staying healthy easier. “As we get older, the most important thing is living in a place that provides safety and enhances socialization,” Adams says. “One of our goals is to make sure that people are engaged. We do not limit freedoms: If residents want to visit their children, they can. We also make sure that our residents remain part of the Basking Ridge community, through attending religious services, engaging in volunteer opportunities or socializing at community events.” Learn more about the programs and services available at ArborBaskingRidge.com/Lifestyle.

Feelin’ Hot ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACY LING

This Easy Turkey Chili Recipe Delivers a Powerful Nutritional Punch Packed with protein, fiber and an array of colorful vegetables, turkey chili is a filling and nutritious dish that will keep you satisfied for hours. Ground turkey is lighter in flavor and has a finer texture compared to ground beef, which tends to have a stronger taste and coarser texture. Thus, turkey chili often has a milder flavor profile. However, the spices used can greatly impact the overall taste. Adding a variety of herbs and spices can result in a delicious and unique flavor. Not only is turkey chili delicious, but it’s also incredibly healthy. Turkey is a lean protein that’s low in fat and calories, while beans and vegetables are high in fiber, vitamins and minerals. This combination makes turkey chili a great option for anyone looking to lose weight, improve their health or maintain a balanced diet. The lean protein in ground turkey also helps to build and repair muscle, while the fiber-rich beans and vegetables promote digestive health and help to control blood sugar levels. Additionally, the spices used in different turkey chili recipes—such as chili powder, garlic and cumin— can provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits. One of the great things about turkey chili is that it’s highly customizable. If you prefer a spicier chili, you can sauté a jalapeño before browning the meat or add more chili powder or hot sauce. If you want to make it more filling, you can add additional vegetables or beans. And you also can play around with the seasonings to find the perfect combination of flavors that suit your taste buds. You can make turkey chili in large batches for several meals throughout the week or freeze it for later.

Bret Kaye, Alex Vaccarella and Peter Hoglund

The flipping of the calendar onto a new year can serve as a reminder to assess your financial state so you can move confidently toward tax season and beyond. Peter Hoglund, Alex Vaccarella and Bret Kaye, senior financial advisors at Wealth Enhancement Group in Warren, work with clients to review their finances and uncover areas that they might not have considered to make their accounts more stable and profitable. Here, Hoglund shares their advice on what you should be considering in January:

CHECK THE AMOUNT YOU’RE WITHHOLDING FOR TAXES

A lot of things can change throughout the year. Did you get a salary increase or bonus? Did you take on a second job? Now is a good time to look at how much you’re withholding for taxes in each paycheck or moving into your retirement or profit-sharing plan to make sure the percentage correct. Is it enough?

REBALANCE YOUR INVESTMENT PORTFOLIO

If you’re managing your own investments, make sure the allocations are appropriate for this—and the next—stage of your life. During the year, the markets may have shifted your allocation into a risky position. It pays to review this periodically. Maybe now is the time to hire a professional and turn over the reins?

ASSESS THE PAST YEAR’S SPENDING

Credit cards produce great year-end spending statements. These concise reports are helpful to determine where you are spending your money over the year or month-to-month. This bird’s-eye view can help you find ways to cut spending—and save more—in the coming year.

ACT NOW IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE YOUR ACCOUNTANT

Do you want to hire a new CPA to file your taxes and help manage your finances? Now is the time to act. Most accountants take on clients in November and December. Move quickly as openings close up by the middle of January. If you are looking to switch, get a new accountant nailed down at the end of the year or early January to be safe.

REVIEW WILLS, POWER OF ATTORNEY DOCUMENTS AND HEALTH CARE DIRECTIVES

Wills, power of attorney documents and health care directives might not need to be changed annually, but it’s good to review them every year and make necessary adjustments.

Alex Vaccarella reviews clients’ finances in preparation for the new year.

TELL LOVED ONES WHERE IMPORTANT ACCOUNTS AND DOCUMENTS ARE KEPT

Loved ones should know where you have your financial holdings and where important documents like wills, power of attorney and health care directives are kept. Many of my clients give my information to their loved ones so if something happens to them, they know to call me for institutional knowledge. As people age, the sad fact is that peers pass away. An advisor can be a steady source for this information. If you do not have one central advisor, leave clear and concise directions on where accounts are held, account numbers and institution contact information.

IF YOU’RE 73 OR OLDER, UNDERSTAND MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS ON YOUR IRA

When you turn 73, you are required to take a minimum distribution if you have a traditional IRA, which a lot of people have from rolling over their employer’s 401(k) plans or pensions into a tax-deferred account. Since the IRS bases the minimum amount you have to take out each year on factors like your age and the current life expectancy table, the figure changes every year. This can make people a bit anxious because not only are they taking money out but they are paying income tax on the distribution, both of which fluctuate. However, you have the entire calendar year to plan how to disburse the funds and pay the taxes. January is a good time to plan how it will be distributed. Some retirees prefer to take slivers out every month like a paycheck. If you opt for this, realize that the amount will change and you will have to adjust the disbursement to make it equal payments throughout the next 12 months. Good Day, Sunshine! HARNESS THE POWER OF SEEING THE SILVER LINING

How do you change your life? The answer, according to Jennifer Walkup, the author of 365 Days of Positive Living and 3 Minutes a Day Journal for Wellness and Gratitude, lies with altering your mindset. Walkup, a positive psychology practitioner, lives life to the fullest by seeking the silver lining and wrapping it around her like a shawl. This simple practice has gotten her through the ups and downs of life, and it has helped her and her husband, Paul, an accountant, raise their consciousness and their sons (Owen is 17 and Jeremy is 15). We asked her to tell us her secrets for getting 2024 off to a good start.

Jennifer Walkup WE’RE AT THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER NEW YEAR, A TIME WHEN PEOPLE MAKE—AND MORE OFTEN THAN NOT BREAK—RESOLUTIONS. WE FAIL AND WALK AWAY; HOW DO YOU PUT A POSITIVE SPIN ON THAT?

Each day is a new beginning. It sounds trite, but we all set goals and fail. Failing is not a bad thing—it’s sign that you are trying something new. Every day is a new day; don’t be afraid to fail.

THAT’S REALLY INSPIRING. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN SUCH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE 365 DAYS A YEAR?

I’ve always had a positive attitude and looked at life on the bright side. It’s my personality. But things really came into focus when I faced challenges, so I made a conscious effort to continue the practice.

IS THAT WHAT LED YOU TO WRITE YOUR BOOKS?

There was no specific incident that inspired them, but I had been thinking about writing 365 Days for a while and then when the pandemic hit, and everyone in the world was in the same boat, it seemed like a great time to write it. I wanted to put all the things I was practicing—quotes and advice and my spin on things—together so I could help people.

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE SAYING THAT WHEN IT COMES TO POSITIVITY, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

Yes, it becomes a habit; it helps you focus on the good and become better equipped when there are challenges. It’s about looking at your day and finding those little bits of gratitude because we take all the good things for granted. When you write down something good about each day, it makes you notice and be grateful for it. Once you change your viewpoint on life, you can move through it. It is not always easy, but it is worth the effort to try to learn.

GREAT IDEA, BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU’RE HAVING A REALLY TERRIBLE DAY?

You can’t force positivity, but you can at least look for the silver lining in many situations. It can’t always happen, and that’s OK. It’s OK to not be OK. I’m not saying that you should ignore your feelings; it’s OK to feel how you feel. You’ll get through it. All our feelings are valid—good or bad— and the more we accept that, the easier it is to handle challenges when they arise.

THAT’S AWFULLY HARD TO DO SOMETIMES.

Yes, being positive is easy when things are great. When they’re not, you have to put time and effort into it. That’s where 365 Days and Gratitude Journal come in. They make you focus on positivity. You can either fold and wallow or use the strategies of positive thinking to help lighten the load. There are days and situations when it is really hard and when you truly might not be able to find any silver lining. That’s where, for me, the regular practice of gratitude comes into play. When I am focused on a consistent gratitude mindset, it helps keep me going through the really difficult times when gratitude might be harder to find. I’ve done this with my kids, and I see it coming through in their personalities.

All our feelings are valid—good or bad—and the more we accept that, the easier it is to handle challenges when they arise. CONTINUED >

The best advice I can give is to pull something good out of every day. People sometimes get all caught up in the big-picture stuff and don’t stop and look at the little things that can change your life.

JUST HOW DO YOU DO THAT: FIND THE POSITIVITY WHEN YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE THERE’S NOTHING GOOD?

The best advice I can give is to pull something good out of every day. Today is just today. It’s one day. People sometimes get all caught up in the big-picture stuff and don’t stop and look at the little things that can change your life. I still get caught up in the big things and when I do, I step back and reassess when I’m overwhelmed. Then I move slowly forward. That’s what I’m always trying to teach. It has always worked for me.
