January 2023 PUBLISHER S

LIFESTYLE LETTER

One Trip Around the Sun Our January 2023 issue is of particular significance to us because it’s our birthday month! We first introduced Somerset Hills City Lifestyle to the community one year ago, and we couldn’t be happier that we took the leap to expand into a new market. Have any ideas for articles for upcoming issues? Feel free to reach out to us. We love hearing from our readers! For many of us, this time of year presents an opportunity to reset. I’ve personally never been a fan of New Year’s resolutions. We get all excited about a new idea and by the second week of January it’s fallen by the wayside. Instead, I like to challenge myself all year long as needed. One of my favorite sayings is “A goal without a plan is a dream.” Make sure you put action steps behind those goals! I approach goal setting from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. In this issue, we wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life — business, finance, food, home and personal health — it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle — it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every week would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is good for the soul. In fact, later this month we are headed to Cabo San Lucas with a group of publisher friends to celebrate our success over the past year. While vacation is fun, it would certainly lose its luster if we never returned to the real world. Here’s another example. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and crème brulée every night for dinner isn’t the best for your health, but doing so once in a while is perfectly fine! It’s not the "sometimes" choices you make, it’s the "most of the time choices" that shape you. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at CocoLuxe. It’s not what you do some days — it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. At press time, November 28th, interest rates have finally dropped into the 6% range, and locally, homes continue to sell but with caveats. We are seeing a Tale of Two Markets - those still accepting offers within the first week or so, and those with 90+ days on market and growing. Please call me if you'd like to discuss the factors that create the difference.

Using GSMLS data:

As November ends, the shortage of locally available homes continues with less than a three-month supply. The following summarizes currently available homes for sale as of today, 11/28: Basking Ridge: 43 homes on the market, one more than last month (42). Bernardsville:

21 homes on the market, down 7 from last month. (28).

Bedminster:

21 homes on the market, no change since last month.

Worth noting: The month-to-month comparison illustrates that sales are keeping pace as well as outpacing new listings in some instances. Let's not forget that having less homes on market is also contributing to fewer sales. ©2022 Coldwell Banker Realty. All rights reserved. BIKE ON! The New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League’s Somerset Hills VeloRaptors Team Builds Children’s Bodies and Spirits

His fist held high in the air in triumph, the high school freshman pedaled his mountain bike across the finish line. “I made the last lap! I made the last lap!” he shouted to his mother, who was among those cheering him on at the New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League’s annual races. Although he finished the race in last place, it was quite an accomplishment because it was the first cycling competition he had ever completed despite numerous previous attempts. “He was bubbling with excitement,” says Ken Seebeck, the league director of the New Jersey program. “To me, he was the winner that day.” The race-rider is one of some 700 students in the state — including 40 on the Somerset Hills VeloRaptors team that debuted in 2017 — who are enrolled in the seven-and-a-half-month-long program whose declared mission is to “build strong minds, bodies, character and communities through cycling.” “Seeing kids out there having fun, making new friends, becoming part of something that may stick with them for a lifetime is an incredibly rewarding payoff,” says Dominique Verlaan, team director and Level 3 coach for the Somerset Hills VeloRaptors, whose two sons are in the program. through 12, ride together several times a week from mid-October to mid-June to train for the voluntary-participation endof-season races, which culminate in the presenting of various medals and awards. “Our program is youth development through cycling,” Seebeck says. “But the goals of each student, from building fitness to riding with friends, vary. Cycling is a wonderful opportunity to join a team-based sport, especially for those who aren’t participating in any others.” At New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League, he adds, everyone, like the high school freshman who finished last, is a winner. “There are no cuts, no tryouts, and nobody is benched,” Seebeck says. “Everyone makes the team. We’re not primarily developing elite athletes, although some have started with our program — notably Kate Courtney from the Northern California League, who was the 2018 XC World Champion — have gone on to be professionals.” Enrollment in the nonprofit program, which was established in California in 2001, is $300, plus the cost of a mountain bike, which starts at $500 to $600. “We have a robust scholarship program,” Seebeck says, adding that they have never turned any student down and they also have a mountain bike loaner program.Participants, who are invited to join a team, register through a software portal; each team sets its own schedules and riding locations. “Nine out of 10 of our student-athletes have never raced before, and some have not ridden a mountain bike,” he says. “And many of them have never played team sports.” Seebeck, who took over as league director in 2017 when the New Jersey program started, typically rides (in a car, not on a mountain bike) some 15,000 miles a year around the state for the league. “I was an avid cyclist before I took this job,” he says. “It really resonated with me because cycling changed my life and the life of my family.” His youngest son, who has been in the program since the sixth grade and is now a 14-year-old high school freshman, is pedaling in Seebeck’s footsteps. “He really took to the sport,” Seebeck says. “Most of his interactions with friends before he joined were online due to the pandemic. He shows drive and determination now; it’s his primary sport.” Noting that the New Jersey Interscholastic Cycling League is “up and coming,” Seebeck says the goal is to expand it to include every school in the state. “It’s not as popular as baseball, basketball or football,” he says. “But we’re getting there.” Seebeck hopes that the high school freshman racer who felt his first taste of victory when he came in last becomes a lifetime rider. “That’s what we’re all about,” he says. Find out more about the league at newjerseymtb.org or email Ken Seebeck at info@newjerseymtb.org.

A PERSONAL TOUCH ARTICLE BY MELISSA DESANTI PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Erica Wasserman Balances Family With a Creative Business That Feeds Her Soul

The best part of being an entrepreneur for Bernardsville mom Erica Wasserman is having her children see her work hard to achieve a dream without sacrificing a moment of their childhood. Wasserman is the owner of The Monogram Corner, a personalized gifts and accessories business. As much as being a work-from-home mom has its daily struggles, she wouldn’t want to have it any other way. We spoke to Wasserman about how to follow your passion without compromising family.

TELL US ABOUT THE MONOGRAM CORNER. I’ve always loved giving personalized gifts. There’s nothing better than knowing something was made just for you. As a mom of three children under 10—Emme, Reid and Grady—I cherish the monogrammed blankets and sweaters they received as babies. Now as they get older, they also appreciate how fun and special it is to know that extra thought was put into the gifts they love. In 2015, I took my love of personalized gifts and created The Monogram Corner. What started as a way to make special things for my family and friends has grown into a curated collection of custom gifts and accessories.

WHY DO YOU LOVE THE SOMERSET HILLS? My husband, Jeff, and I moved to Bernardsville ten years ago from Greenwich, Conn. I grew up in Bridgewater and after moving out of state for school and work, I never thought I would be back. After the birth of my daughter, I knew it was important to be closer to my family. As much as we miss living close to the water, I am so happy we found this community.

IS THERE SOMEONE SPECIAL YOU’D LIKE TO THANK FOR HELPING YOU THROUGH PARENTHOOD? As a stay-at-home mom/business owner, I have come to learn that balance is key. With the support of my amazing

26

D E C OR T R E N D S | SHOPPI NG

husband and parents, I’ve been able to pursue both of my dreams: motherhood and owning a business. I love that my children—especially my daughter—get to witness me doing something I am so passionate about while not missing a single moment of their lives.

HOW HAS STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS FULFILLED A LIFELONG DREAM? I have clear memories of making things like bookmarks and bracelets and selling them to other kids at the playground. I love that The Monogram Corner has given me the opportunity to connect and collaborate with other businesses and creators, like Sail to Sable, J. McLaughlin, J. Crew and small boutiques along the East Coast.

WHAT TIP WOULD YOU GIVE TO FELLOW MOM ENTREPRENEURS? Do what brings you joy and have fun with it. Running a business can be challenging, so you really have to do something that you’re passionate about. The long nights and unexpected bumps in the road will be worth it.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR KIDS? As our family moves past the preschool stage, it’s so much easier to hop in the car and go. We love spending time at the beach, taking trips to the local library and spending time with family and friends. Twice a year, we go to Sag Harbor, New York. It’s family-friendly and truly one of our favorite spots. Browse Wasserman’s creative offerings at themonogramcorner.com or follow her at @themonogramcorner. Melissa DeSanti directs morrisbernardsmoms.com, a resource for local parents on caring for and entertaining their families.

One of the best gifts we can give our children is educating and modeling a healthy lifestyle. Ti Patel, owner of Montessori Kids Universe in Chester, already sees the habits she instilled early on with her daughter, Naya, when they go to restaurants. “When there is an option for fries, apples or carrots for a side, she chooses the vegetables or fruit,” she says. Patel attributes Naya’s choices to the fact that she engaged in healthy behaviors with Naya at an early age. “She participates in meals: I let her decide what vegetable we will have with dinner and give her food to cut. My husband, Dipen, and I will eat dinner with her so she can see that we are all eating healthy meals,” she says. Yoga is another practice Patel instilled early on. “I do yoga with her. I don’t just put it on TV and walk away,” she says. “It shows camaraderie, that we support each other.” Patel brings this same philosophy to Montessori Kids Universe, where she and Director Lamis Osman forge the basis for healthy living that will last through adulthood. “We want children to recognize what’s healthy food versus unhealthy food at an early age,” Patel says. “With parents’ permission, we will feed bananas, strawberries and apples to our infants, and when children are older, we allow them to wash

and cut their own healthy snacks like carrots, cucumbers and apples.” However, Patel is a realist. “Everyone has their ‘off’ days. Sometimes, your child will want chicken fingers and fries instead of grapes or carrots,” she says. “Parents should not get too worked up as long as there is still a balance.” Having children be part of meal preparation is empowering. “Children want to eat what they make. We supply all the tools in our classroom: Bowls to wash carrots, a child-friendly apple slicer and workspaces at their level with produce to select from all laid out,” Osman says. “This gives them the power to make their own decisions rather than having someone make those decisions for them.” Physical activity is also a mainstay in a healthy daily routine. Patel emphasizes movement in the school, allowing children to be active in the classroom but to also move throughout the building for different activities, including visiting the Yoga Room and Palestra (indoor gym). “Fresh air is also important,” she notes. “We open the windows daily but aim to go outside at least 30 minutes a day, weather permitting of course.” The children do yoga a minimum of three days a week as part of the curriculum — and

sometimes more if they’d like. “Yoga helps the children manage their anxiety and improves their emotional regulation. It boosts their self-esteem and increases body awareness and mindfulness. It also enhances children’s concentration and memory. There are so many benefits,” Patel says. “Even adults can benefit from taking 5 to 10 minutes a day to practice deep breathing — just to take a moment. It’s important to instill the same philosophy with our children.” Learn more about Montessori Kids Universe at montessorikidsuniverse.com/our-schools/ mku-chester.

WHAT PEACE FEELS LIKE ACCESS YOUR DEEPEST STATE OF RELAXATION, REDUCE STRESS AND CHANNEL CREATIVITY WITH FLOAT THERAPY ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE PHOTOGRAPHY

S ELF CA R E | HEALTH + WE LLNE S S

It is so difficult to find peace within ourselves — real peace, the kind that allows your body to truly relax, that allows your mind to release anxiety and stress, that allows you to explore your own creativity and unlock the truths that dwell deep inside you. To return to you. Floatation therapy gives us the unique experience of removing sensory input like light and sound and allows us to just drift — mentally and physically — in an antigravity environment, alone with just our thoughts, letting the world melt away and our bodies decompress. The technique originated in the mid-1950s, developed by neuroscientist John C. Lilly as an alternative therapy.“Floating is known to relieve anxiety, reduce

pain, support recovery and promote better sleep. When environmental stimuli are removed, our brains relax, allowing us to reach optimal rest and rejuvenation and allow our minds to explore unfettered. In this state, it can assist people with managing ADHD, anxiety and depression,” says Ken Kaplan, owner of Quantum Wellness in Bedminster, which offers five flotation cabins, in addition to other wellness services, such as massage, holistic facials, reiki, cryotherapy and an infrared sauna. The float cabins at Quantum Wellness are set in their own private rooms with a shower, towels, toiletries, hair care products and ear plugs. They are filled with ten inches of water, which is kept at the same temperature as your skin, and anti-microbial magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt), which makes the water buoyant and allows you to float upon the surface. The Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin, where it draws toxins from the body, softens skin, reduces swelling and relaxes muscles. “Our float cabins are one of the only ones in the industry that have filtration systems that continuously sterilize the water,” Kaplan says. As the zero-gravity float cabin allows your body to decompress, it reduces joint and muscle pain, increases blood circulation, stimulates tissue repair and promotes circulation. “People come here and say they are frustrated and stressed but they don’t really realize why,” Kaplan says. “I was that way, too. I tried massage, meditation and yoga, but I found that was more work for me because I was fighting my mind. In the chamber, you don’t have to fight anything.”

Katelyn Von Bargen, Quantum Kids Academy Director, says the goal is to bring people back to their natural state. “Every day, our bodies are fighting gravity; our spinal discs and our spinal cord gets compressed,” she explains. The more relaxed you become, your brain begins to access the Alpha, Theta and Delta waves, which are produced during sleep. “Slower brain waves produce a deeply relaxed state that can reduce stress and anxiety, allow the body to better heal from injuries and allow the mind to find creative ways to achieve the goals we are pursuing,” Von Bargen notes. Quantum Wellness offers one-hour, 90-minute and three-hour sessions. “We recommend clients float regularly,” Kaplan says. “It takes a few times to get acclimated to the environment, really let go and get down into that subconscious and meditative state.” Learn more at quantumwellnessnj.com.

Addressing Disease at its Core Dr. Vince Sferra

How Functional Medicine Discovers the Root Causes of Symptoms to Achieve Better Treatment ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LIZ POLO, HAVANA PHOTOGRAPHY

38

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | HE ALTH + W E LLNE S S

When Dr. Vince Sferra was rushed into surgery for a ruptured appendix 30 years ago, he assumed that all he had to do afterward was heal. However, a few weeks later, his knees, then other joints started to flare up. “It was complex: That initial, massive infection triggered a new immune response to my joint tissue resulting in autoimmune arthritis. My rheumatologist helped me with the massive inflammation in my joints. As the months rolled on, though, I started realizing the impact that the massive infection of my ruptured appendix had on my immune system,” he says. Intrigued by the body’s interconnectivity, Dr. Sferra, a chiropractor, embarked on postgraduate education, studying autoimmunity and clinical nutrition. “Going through this, I knew that there was more to helping people with chronic illness get well than just giving them spinal adjustments and telling them to take vitamins,” he says. Today, Dr. Sferra, the founder of Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation in Somerset, treats patients using functional medicine. The practice — which Dr. Sferra prefers to call “process-oriented medicine” — looks to determine how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the mechanisms that cause the disease or disorder. “In conventional medicine, there’s a disease classification, identification of the one cause and the one treatment. However, with chronic diseases, that rule almost never applies. You cannot just patch up a symptom and solve the problem,” he says. “Take gastrointestinal reflux for example. Conventional medicine will prescribe a specific medication in order to reduce the pain and get the person comfortable, which may be important initially. A skilled functional medicine doctor will look at the person's constitution, habits, diet, blood sugar, and ability to temper stress — so many different things — in order to understand why the problem was created in the first place. We spend a lot of time with patients, assessing their condition, educating them, reviewing tests with them and developing a treatment plan that encompasses many different factors.” When a person visits a doctor who practices real functional medicine, they can expect a comprehensive

intake and assessment, followed probably by lab work to investigate the different mechanisms that could be driving their chronic problems. “If a person has an autoimmune flare-up, that can be treated with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medications — which many times is necessary — but underneath that, we need to know what's driving the immune system to attack its own tissue. The functional medicine doctor will start peeling that apart to identify triggers that can be managed and addressed through things like lifestyle changes, nutrition, physical activity and stress management,” he says. Although comprehensive functional medicine is generally not an insurance-based model of healthcare, it could be the solution for those who have visited dozens of doctors who have not been able to uncover the driving forces behind their chronic condition. “So many people feel they have no other place to go,” he says. Dr. Sferra notes that people don’t need to wait until they have symptoms to start investigating potential underlying conditions that could become chronic. “Perhaps they feel their energy is lower than usual or are experiencing brain fog or gastrointestinal issues,” he says. “This allows us to preemptively identify those issues and make recommendations that give you the upper hand on managing a condition such as low blood sugar. However, once the condition is under control you can’t just dust off your hands and go back to your old ways. The new habits that have helped restore your health will be the ones that will keep you there.” Functional medicine relies on teamwork between the patient and the doctor. “Patients need to understand why they need to make changes, not make changes because a doctor told them,” says Dr. Sferra, who requests that patients send him email updates between appointments to ask questions, and describe what is working and not working and what they are doing consistently. “Those emails help patients stay accountable and keep us engaged in dialogue. They have to stay the course. The ones that stick with it will start seeing change.” Learn more about healthy lifestyles at nmrnj.com.

Cycling for Success HOW INDOOR CYCLING CAN HELP YOU REACH YOUR HE ALTH GOALS AND E XPAND YOUR SOCIAL CIRCLE

ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI If you are looking to kick your exercise routine into a higher gear this year — and find a supportive, encouraging community — give indoor cycling a spin. Besides the cardiovascular benefits, indoor cycling can help you lose weight and improve your muscle endurance. It also releases a burst of endorphins, those euphoric brain chemicals that help to relieve pain, reduce stress and improve your sense of well-being.

44

G E T AC T IV E | FITN ESS

“Riding takes the anxiety that we manufacture all day long and channels it into a more productive distribution of energy,” says Carin Karolin, who co-owns CycleBar in Bernardsville and Montvale with her husband, Alan Leipsner. “It allows you to release that anxiety in a healthy, productive manner. The outcome is better than any drug because you’re solving the issue within yourself.” With indoor cycling, as with any exercise, Karolin says there are no silver bullets. “You have to have a healthy combination of diet and exercise, but you also have those endorphins that can be ignited in those four walls,” she notes. “Everyone walks in for a reason — and it’s not always the same reason. Obviously, riders want to sweat, burn calories and stay in shape, but the vast majority are there for that fine line between the physical and the mental. They want to clear their heads from what is going on outside those walls.” Although everyone in the room comes from different walks of life and skill levels, there is a strong sense of community — and that is where the magic happens. “This is a community of likeminded individuals who inspire and empower each other,” Karolin says. The couple extends a special welcome to those new to indoor cycling. “It’s riding a bike, which we all did as kids,” Karolin says. “I encourage people to look at riding as an experience rather than a workout. There are lights, a variety of music, choreography and a group of experienced, entertaining instructors. Each time participants walk in, they will have a new experience, whether it’s their second time or their hundredth. Also, this is a no-judgment zone. Riders can go at their own pace and don’t have to be competitive. They just have to participate.” CycleBar extends this sense of community into the towns it serves through CycleGives, which raises awareness and funds causes. “It’s our way of giving back to the communities we serve," says Leipsner. LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear.

The Golden Remedy HOMEMADE CHICKEN SOUP WARMS YOUR BODY, FEEDS YOUR SOUL AND PERHAPS CURES SOME ILLS

ingredients: • 1 lb boneless chicken breast, diced • 1 onion, diced • 3 carrots, diced • 3 celery stalks, diced • 1 clove garlic, minced • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 1/4 tsp salt • 1/8 tsp pepper • 48 oz chicken or vegetable broth • 2 c water • 1/2 lb small pasta • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish) • Parmesan cheese, shaved (optional, for garnish and added flavor)

method:

When the temperatures dip, I’m all about soup season, aren’t you? My family loves my recipe for chicken soup the best. It’s my favorite go-to recipe for winter because it is easy to make, tastes amazing and can be tweaked by changing up some of the staple ingredients. Chicken soup has many health benefits because the broth soothes the body with lots of nutrients, hydration and warmth. Packed with vitamins and minerals, chicken broth nourishes people who are sick with common illnesses. Plus, homemade chicken soup is easy to digest. It packs a nutrition power-punch of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber, and contains cysteine, an amino acid known for its healing properties. Homemade chicken soup is also great because you can control the ingredients. When I’m trying to shed a few pounds, I substitute beans for pasta to increase my protein intake. When I want to get in some extra iron, I’ll sauté fresh spinach with the other base ingredients. Sometimes, I’ll use tortellini instead of small pieces of pasta. You get the idea.
