Ah, the holiday season—a time of twinkling lights, joyful carols and, of course, the epic battle of wills in our household. You see, the photo above encapsulates last Christmas, when my daughters agreed to wear matching dresses. Well, three out of four isn’t bad, right? Our eldest chose a dress that coordinated in color but declared her independence from full-blown “twinning.” I suspect my days of poofy Christmas dresses are numbered, which is sad for me. I’m just waiting for the day when they revolt and show up in ugly Christmas sweaters instead! December is always a time of reflection for me. This year brought us many new things, the biggest one being a new home in Martinsville! New neighbors, new friendships and a whole new canvas to paint our holiday traditions upon. Our promise to our girls came true: Our new home radiates with the festive spirit, thanks to the magical touch of Shack Shine. For Elizabeth Ruffalo, the holidays are all about being with family and friends. And this season, she’ll be celebrating in an extra-special place: her new home. Ruffalo, the founder of the interior design firm Pheasant Lane Designs, and her husband, Matthew, head of investment solutions at a large private bank, worked with a builder and architect to create a house that lives for entertaining. Sited on over 10 acres in Far Hills on what used to be a Christmas tree farm, the two-story 5,300-square-foot house in an English Country–style design with contemporary accents, and the 1,200-square-foot detached guest cottage are all set to welcome the couple’s brothers, sisters, parents and all the children in the extended family on Christmas Eve, a guest list that tops 20. “Whether it’s a big holiday or a regular day, interior design represents family to me,” Ruffalo says, adding that her office is in the house. The first floor of the stucco and stone house is the consummate host. The extrawide hallway, which Ruffalo calls the spine of the house, is the artery for a series of rooms, including a powder room, a lounge with glass doors that provide views of the landscape, a mudroom, a kitchen, a family room and a wine area with a wet bar. “The layout is flexible so we can be creative with the spaces,” she says. “Everything was designed with intention. The house looks grand, but the rooms are not grand; they are inviting. The materials make the space more elevated.” In every project, Ruffalo, who has degrees in civil engineering and interior design, focuses on the quality of construction and the fixtures and finishes. She designed the custom built-ins and bath vanities and specified and hand-selected all the finishes and interior architectural details for her house, including the tile and plumbing and the lighting and rustic ceiling beams, to create a warm, inviting space. The basement, part of which is now a playroom for the couple’s 5-year-old son, Leonardo, will become a second entertaining space, complete with a guest bedroom. “We want people to stay over,” Ruffalo says, adding that some of their relatives live quite a distance away. “And we want everyone to have their own space. The guest house is detached but it’s connected to the main house with a stone arcade.” Every detail in the home has been considered, from the roof to the family room hearth. “We’re looking forward to spending Christmas morning by the fireplace with Leonardo,” Ruffalo says. As a child, Sarah Sockolof often would walk through her family business, Simms Jewelers, admiring the pieces in the cases. When she was about 12, she fell in love with a tanzanite ring. “I was a big nail-biter. My parents promised me I could have the ring if I stopped biting. After a month, I started biting again and the ring disappeared,” she says. When she turned 21, her parents surprised her with a bouquet of flowers. Attached to the ribbon was the tanzanite ring. “I still have it to this day,” she says. “That’s what jewelry does: When you wear a piece, you relive moments.” This retail family knows how to capture moments. The store, based in a century-old former home in Bedminster, was founded in 1953 in New Brunswick by Sid and Mae Sockolof and next led by their son, Arthur, Sarah’s father. And now, it’s led by Sarah, and they've never lost that desire to capture and cherish moments with jewelry and gestures. The holidays are a busy season, but they take the time to give special touches for guests. “Year round, we have a chocolate truffle dish set out in the entryway,” Sockolof says. “Around the holidays, we put two truffles in gift boxes to give to clientele to place in their Christmas stockings or at the table. We have become known for our truffles.” On Christmas Eve, the store takes on a festive open house atmosphere. “We serve refreshments like small bites, coffee, tea and eggnog for those who are stopping by to pick up their gifts,” she says. The staff is like family; jeweler Gerald (“Jerry”) Beck has been with Simms for over 30 years. “We close on Christmas Eve at 3 p.m. so that our staff can go home and celebrate,” Sockolof says. “My family descends on the store either before or after other holiday parties to raid the refreshment table. Afterward, we return to my house for a lasagna dinner together and then we all go to my sister-in-law’s house on Christmas Day. This style works best with hair that is smooth, manageable and at least below shoulder-length. Straighten out curly or wavy hair. Brush hair through and make sure it’s completely tangle-free and smooth. Gather all the hair into a high ponytail at the crown of your head. Use hair tie to secure it in place and tighten hair. Pull the ponytail through the hair elastic one more time. Depending on how big you want the bow’s ears to be, you can either stop midway for a smaller ribbon or before you reach the ends for larger loops. Split the bump of your half-through loop into two. Bunch them up on either side, refining the strands to create the perfect “ribbon” on both the left and right ends. Conceal the hair tie with the hair that’s left loose. Loop this lock over and in between your ribbon and secure the ends with a bobby pin. Use hairspray to lock it in. Enhance the bow-like appearance with decorative hairpins, ribbons or small accessories in the center.

Jessica Walker has you covered. Walker—owner and president of the J. Walker Salon Group of Bernardsville, Basking Ridge and Mendham—is seeing several trends that will play equally well with daily wear and evening elegance. “Shag haircuts with layers are making a comeback. This is a relaxed, tasseled look that works well for both long and short hair,” she says. “Lobs and bobs are also in right now. This is a hairstyle that remains timeless and can be customized to suit different face shapes and textures. It’s a beautiful way to have a slick look with clean lines and blunt ends.” Walker says that curtain bangs remain popular, with style makers like Adele and Kate Middleton opting for this soft ’70s look that frames and reshapes the face. “Curtain bangs are a little longer than traditional bangs and give you a beautiful bohemian look,” Walker says. Be mindful of how curtain bangs will affect your face shape. For example, if your face is round, they can elongate your face and give a framed effect. If your face is heart-shaped, long curtain bangs can cover your wide cheekbones. Walker notes that textured styles and natural texture are in vogue. “People are looking for minimal upkeep and different styles that they can manage from home,” she says. “Embracing your curls— whether truly curly, wavy or even straight—is a significant trend. It’s that natural texture that people are going toward. Just put some light cream or gel on your locks to coax out their natural texture.” Hair accessories add flair—and women are embracing these flourishes this holiday season. Walker is seeing a variety of headbands, scrunchies and scarves accenting styles and finishing off looks, such as the Bow Bun, which is an easy go-to option for parties. “Really, ever since the pandemic, low maintenance styles have been in. Everyone wants a look that is wash-and-go, but polished,” she says. “If you’re going casual that day, accessories give a nice extra pop of color or make you look a bit fancier.” Keeping your hair healthy in the winter can be a feat. “The winter air dries out hair, causes split ends, makes it prone to breaking and increases static,” Walker says. “The weather pulls out the moisture and reduces the natural oils on our scalp, which normally protect hair from splitting or falling out.” She recommends using a deep-cleansing shampoo once a week; Goldwell or Kérastas are recommended lines. “I advise shampooing your hair every third or fourth day and using a deep conditioning mask,” she says. “We have a treatment called a Fusio-Dose booster by Kérastas for damaged, over-processed hair. We use

The best way to create community is to become part of it, which is what Paul Miller Volkswagen, the only car franchise dealership in Bernardsville, has been doing since it opened its doors to drivers a little over a decade ago. Charitable work has always been a part of the DNA of the company, which was established in New Jersey in 1976 by former race car driver Paul Miller, owner of the racing team that bears his name. The company now has 12 dealer groups in the state: Porsche, Audi, Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar, Land Rover, Honda, Toyota, BMW, Subaru, VW and Chevrolet. CONTINUED >

“Community is everything,” says Edward Schoonmaker, the general manager of the Bernardsville store. “It’s the heart and soul of our business; it’s our lifeline.” Since 2019 when he joined Paul Miller Volkswagen, Schoonmaker, a 26-year industry veteran, has placed a priority on community involvement, taking an active role in Main Street Bernardsville, the charitable nonprofit whose mission is to revitalize the community. “I joined Paul Miller right before the pandemic,” he says. “So we weren’t able to get started with our community work as soon as I had hoped. But in the last couple of years, we have been supporting the local businesses and the community.” This year, Paul Miller Volkswagen sponsored Bernardsville’s annual car show and food truck festival and was among the judges of the event. The dealership also sponsors the Bernardsville High School football team, golf outings and hole-in-one events. Recently, it sponsored a meet-and-greet mixer for business owners and operators in the dealership showroom.
“It’s our way of thanking the community and being a part of it,” Schoonmaker says. Although Schoonmaker doesn’t live in New Jersey—a resident of Monroe, New York, he drives his VW an hour each way to get to the dealership—he feels he’s a part of the community. “I’ve met a lot of people, including the mayor,” he says. “Olivia Manning, the executive director of Main Street Bernardsville, is one of our customers; she drives a VW Atlas. We are a community that sticks together.” Schoonmaker plans to expand Paul Miller Volkswagen’s community service. “One of my big initiatives is to become more involved and do more community events,” he says. “We want to continue to explore and grow in this area. ’Tis the season to be stressed? Not necessarily. “We all have stress to varying degrees, but the good news is that stress arises from how we react to the outside world, which means we are in the driver’s seat of managing that stress,” says Ken Kaplan, owner of Quantum Wellness in Bedminster. As a corporate lawyer who manages a law firm, Kaplan knows a thing or two about stress. He opened Quantum Wellness eight years ago to help others manage how they react to stress. “We don’t realize how much stress we place on ourselves until we do something like go on vacation, attend a retreat or spend time doing something restorative. Then we see the contrast in how we were living and how we could be living,” he says. Quantum Wellness offers a variety of ways to achieve this new state of peaceful being, including float therapy, infrared sauna therapy, holistic facials and massage. Quantum Wellness has its roots in float therapy and has five private float rooms. “People who float will tell you it has changed their lives by taking their baseline stress down several levels,” he says. “Float therapy is designed to deal with

The holidays are an especially good time to take a step back and notice your stress levels. “It’s ironic: We look forward to the holiday season, but it’s full of stress,” Kaplan says. “When you take that stress level down, the world is different. Oreo Truffles Nicole Mondlock of Baked with Love by Nicole recently moved to Somerset County from New York with her husband, Jeffrey, and Maggie, a Cattle Dog mix. The home baker decided to share her beloved family recipes by launching her business in 2020. What is her favorite holiday recipe? Holiday Oreo Truffles. Oreos and the refreshing crunch of candy cane peppermint? Count us in!
Makes 25
ingredients: • 25 Oreo cookies • 4 oz cream cheese, at room temperature • 1 c semi-sweet chocolate chips • 1 tsp coconut oil • Candy canes, crushed
directions: 1. Using a food processor, crush the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs. 2. Beat the softened cream cheese and Oreo cookie crumbs in a stand mixer until a dough-like mixture has formed. 3. Roll into 1 inch balls. Place on baking sheet lined with wax paper and freeze for one hour. 4. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave, stirring the mixture every 30 seconds. 5. Dip each Oreo ball into the melted chocolate using a fork and place back on the wax paper.

Kalahari embraces its African theme in authentic ways: from selecting custom-crafted artwork and guest room furniture, to playing recorded music from the streets of Cape Town to offering original crafts as guest souvenirs. The Nelson family, which owns and operates Kalahari, travels throughout Africa to forge partnerships, and the company gives back by bringing clean water supporting entrepreneurship and creativity. To date, the company has invested more than $5.5 million to support local artists and craftsmen through the purchase of African art, textiles and more showcased throughout the resorts. In 2021, Kalahari Resorts funded solar power, clean water access, facilities for female sculptors and raw materials to support the community of 180 artisans at ZimSculpt in Zimbabwe. These sculptures are on display at each of the resorts. When guests purchase a piece, the Nelson Family Life Foundation matches the purchase price and donates the total combined amounts to The Water Colors Life Project, which aims to reduce barriers to clean water for African villages, and specifically artists, by drilling borewells every month. The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
