Grateful Hearts Gather As we find ourselves amidst a season of turkey-induced comas and the embrace of cozy sweater weather, our hearts brim with the warmth that rivals that extra slice of pumpkin pie. While we’re unapologetic dream-chasers, goal-crushers and sometimes even harbor aspirations of world domination (well, at least in the realm of dessert domination), we’ve come to a profound realization that life isn’t solely about the relentless pursuit of success. It’s equally about cherishing the idiosyncratic characters that populate our lives, such as that eccentric uncle whose mere mention of cranberry sauce can spark a passionate debate. (Yes, it’s a surprisingly polarizing topic.) Lionel Hampton aptly remarked, “Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind.” For us, dear readers, Thanksgiving is the ultimate family reunion, a fusion of gratitude and gluttony akin to a superhero team-up. In this November edition, we dedicate our pages to narratives of gathering around the table, enumerating our blessings and extending a hand to our community. On our cover, we spotlight a special duo very close to my heart: my youngest daughter, Violet, and her steadfast companion, Reid. Their unique connection melds the antics of siblings with the endearing quirks of an old married couple. The inspiration for this cover shoot was borne from a nostalgic moment as I perused a cherished holiday photo of Violet from last year. Although my perspective may be colored by parental pride, I couldn’t help but see her as the embodiment of the perfect cover model. Thanks to a brilliant suggestion from my husband, we decided to include her charismatic partner-in-crime, Reid, to authentically capture their vibrant synergy. This month, we’d like to express our gratitude to the local businesses and neighbors who contribute to the magic of this publication. They are the secret ingredient in our Thanksgiving gravy, indispensable and undeniably delightful. In 1974, John Tompkins’ world changed when his friend in the fourth grade shared caramels his mother had made. Tompkins never forgot Mrs. Cook’s caramels and about 25 years later, he started experimenting with recipes to recreate that delicious taste. “This was pre-internet. I bought a couple of candy recipe books and started playing around, combining a few things, changing a few things up here and there. I eventually came up with a recipe that I thought tasted like Mrs. Cook’s,” he says. For the next decade, Tompkins made caramels in small, 2.5-pound batches for gifts and special occasions. Caramel making became his oasis from his day job running a credit derivatives brokerage floor on Wall Street. “In 2008, after an insane 23-year run on Wall Street, I retired, but I didn’t know what to do with my time,” he says. “After two-and-a-half years of contemplating life, I started to get some serious
side-eye from my wife, Sharon, so I knew I needed to find something to do—quickly.” Tompkins considered his love of caramels, and a second career was launched. In 2011, he opened JT’s Confections. “By 2014, when we started turning a profit, Sharon suggested we do something good with this craziness, so we began donating to charities. Our mission is simple: Help those who help others.” Since 2016, Tompkins has donated all profits from JT’s Confections to charities, including Disabled American Veterans, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The Summit Speech School in New Providence, The Minneapolis Children’s Hospital, Homeless Solutions and the Father English Consumer Choice Food Pantry in Paterson. “I just take out the costs of running the business and medical insurance. I don’t pull a salary,” he says. “The rest goes to the organizations we support.” Every March, JT’s Confections runs its month-long Military Appreciation Campaign.
“When you buy a box of chocolates, I’ll donate a second box to a retired or active member of the military with a nice thank-you card that also says who sponsored the box. We ship these thank-you boxes anywhere in the country,” he says. “I also donate boxes directly to the VA or the American Legion as a way of saying thank you,” he says. For the past five years, JT’s Confections has partnered with the Transition Program at Randolph High School. This program helps provide young adults with practical life skills through work experience in local businesses as well as living skills learned at their group home on the school campus. At JT’s, the teens help with labeling and packing of their turtle boxes as well as helping to fulfill online and corporate orders. ”Working with these kids is my favorite thing we do at JT’s. You have to be willing to take a chance, open your heart and open your mind. If you do, you’re going to be blown away,” he says.

Another organization that Tompkins is passionate about is The Summit Speech School in New Providence. “I have a deaf sister, so as soon as I was introduced to the school I fell in love with it,” he says. “I knew on a very personal level the impact this school has on the lives of so many deaf and hard-of-hearing kids. It gives them a seat at the table.” Each year, JT's donates more than $25,000 to the school. For the past two springs, JT’s has run a ”Your Change Can Make a Change” drive. They invite people to bring in their can, jar or bucket of loose change to be donated in exchange for treats like chocolate-covered Oreos or pretzels. While they are collecting change, they are also selling sponsorships. For every $500 sponsorship pledge, the individual will receive a chance to win a night of chocolate-making for themselves and nine friends. When the program ends, the Transition students come in to sort the change, then travel to Morristown to have an end-of-the-year business lunch, then head to the PeapackGladstone Bank to run the coins through the change counting machine. During these two years, JT’s has collected more than $8,000 in change and $20,000 in sponsorships. All the money is evenly divided between Table of Hope, The Summit Speech School, Homeless Solutions and The Transition program. “Last year, the money went to the Transition Program for a stove
and a phone system for their house, Homeless Solutions for its emergency housing budget, Table of Hope in Morristown for its food budget and Summit Speech for its auditory services budget,” Tompkins says. JT’s outreach transcends monetary donations. Every Easter, they donate Easter baskets to every child at JBWS, a shelter for women in domestic abuse situations, as well as Homeless Solutions. Corporate clients are a big driver of JT’s philanthropy. On holiday orders over $1,000, Tompkins donates 15 percent of the gross sale to either St. Jude, The Summit Speech School, Disabled American Vets or Homeless Solutions. The client chooses which charity the 15 percent goes to and JT’s will make the donation in their name. ”I love all four of those charities, and I don’t care whose name the donation is in. It’s a home run for everyone,” Tompkins says. Corporate team building events are another way JT’s raises funds. For $2,000, 10 people make chocolate for about five hours, then enjoy a meal. The first $1,000 covers the costs; the second $1,000 is donated directly to one of the preferred charities. “Running the brokerage floor on Wall Street was insane, but this is physically harder,” Tompkins says. “I absolutely adore what I do. SENIORS HELPING SENIORS PROVIDES VALUABLE COMPANIONSHIP TO LOVED ONES LIVING AT HOME
When Vincent and Maria Marino were looking to launch a business, they found themselves gravitating toward a helping field. In 2021, the Bernardsville couple opened Seniors Helping Seniors in Basking Ridge, which takes a unique approach to caregiving by matching trained companion and personal care professionals who are themselves seniors with seniors in need of assistance. “Companionship from peers is important at any age but it can be an essential lifeline for seniors who live at home,” Vincent says. “A twenty-year-old caregiver cannot build the same type of relationship as someone of a similar age who is relatable and more empathetic.”

Studies have shown that seniors who have regular social interaction with people around their own age enjoy improved mental, emotional and physical health. In addition, regular social interaction—paired with physical and mental activity—can reduce the risk of dementia and depression and stave off health concerns like high blood pressure. “Companionship greatly improves a senior’s quality of life,” Maria says. “We offer two levels of trained care,” says Michael Marino, the couple’s son. “Companion care provides companionship for people who are alone and need help with tasks like laundry, light housekeeping and trips to the grocery store or appointments. Or they might interact socially, whether it is playing games, going for walks or simply talking. Personal care assistants are certified as home health aides by the New Jersey Board of Nursing and provide intensive help with activities of daily living, such as bathing, feeding and going to the bathroom.” The Marinos take the time to get to know the caregivers they will place. “We perform thorough interviews, background checks and evaluations to make sure we create compatible matches for our senior clients,” Vincent says. “As a result, we match caregivers and seniors who are likely to become friends.” “Many of our senior caregivers already have taken care of loved ones,” Maria adds. “They know the difficulties that can arise and want to help other families out.” Seniors Helping Seniors—which primarily serves Morris, Somerset, Sussex and Warren counties—provides whatever services clients may need, from meal planning, shopping and cooking to light housekeeping and yard work to pet care. Often, the caregivers fill in the gaps, doing routine tasks like reminding clients to take their medication, mailing bills, watching for potential tripping hazards and running errands. Respite care can help prevent burnout in spouses who are caring for a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s. “Our senior caregivers can give spouses a much-needed break, allowing them to go to appointments or have lunch with a friend,” Maria says. “We even provide overnight stays and 24-hour care as needed.” If family members live a distance away, caregivers can connect with them on a regular basis to provide updates on their loved one. The Marinos often hear from senior clients that their friends have moved, passed away or themselves are unable to travel to visit, leaving them increasingly alone and lonely. “The real key is companionship, whether personal care is needed or not,” Vincent says. “There is someone present with mom or dad or both, playing cards, reading with them or going to an event if their physical abilities allow. It’s nice for family members to have someone help parents with meal preparation or accompany them to a hair or medical appointment if the senior no longer drives. Today, Melchior, who lives in Bedminster, takes pride in her attention to clients’ needs and in creating customized solutions to storage challenges. She has built a business with a team of expert designers and an in-house manufacturing facility that allows her to deliver creative, customized and innovative closet and storage solutions. “Regardless of the available space, storage areas can always be improved by maximizing the space that is not being used,” she says. To help people understand the possibilities, Melchior creates 3D renderings of the design to show clients over Zoom or in person. Clients can also visit the Bridgewater showroom. When Melchior approaches a project, she talks to clients about what they desire and assesses variables like how many
shoes need to be accommodated and the length of garments to determine the proper hanging and shelving. “We often also design storage for jewelry, like jewelry cabinets with velvet-lined doors and hooks,” she notes. Innovative technology is making dentist visits more comfortable. Gone are the days of sticky, hardening molds and X-rays that need to be sent off for developing into film. Today, dental care is more precise and allows for increasingly personalized results—all which create a positive experience and improved results. Dr. Patricia Swaintek-Lamb—known as “Dr. Patti” to her patients—is the owner of Proud to Smile Dentistry in Bernardsville, and her office is on the forefront of state-of-the-art technology. For the past 29 years, she has been building relationships with patients one smile at a time. “It is amazing to look back and see our growth,” she says. “I started with 800 square feet and two dental chairs. We now have 2,000 square feet and six dental chairs. Here she discusses the latest innovations she uses to help patients achieve healthy, beautiful smiles.
HOW CAN PEOPLE KEEP THEIR TEETH HEALTHY AND PREVENT DISEASE? To start, practice good oral hygiene at home. Many of our patients switch from a traditional toothbrush to an electric model because people tend to scrub their teeth when using a toothbrush. An electric toothbrush has an ultrasonic motion, which squirts water in between the teeth in a sonic vibration. It removes much more plaque and is kinder to enamel and gums. The electric toothbrush does not have to be expensive; it could be a small battery-operated drugstore toothbrush. Even with diligent brushing and flossing, conditions like gingivitis or periodontal disease can affect a person’s health. We help our patients fight gum disease and protect their oral health with Perio Protect. These are custom-made, prescription trays that deliver medication deep into the periodontal pockets, where toothbrushes, rinse and floss fail to reach. Twice a day for about 15 minutes, the patient places a small amount of prescription medicine gel in each tray, which seals to the gums and forces the medication underneath the gum. This will put an end to inflammation, bleeding gums and sensitivity. A bonus: It also whitens teeth. CONTINUED >

HOW DOES TECHNOLOGY BETTER HELP YOU WITH DIAGNOSTICS? Our office uses digital intraoral X-rays for all our patients. Digital x-rays mean less radiation exposure. The process is also faster because we can see the images on the computer, rather than sending film to the lab to be developed. This allows us to immediately diagnose potential issues, like fractures or cavities. In fact, most of our processes are digital. For example, in the past, if we were preparing a tooth for a crown, we would need to use putty to make an impression of a patient’s mouth, which was messy and uncomfortable. Now, we use our iTero scanner to digitally capture images that we use to make models to create the crown. This process is much more accurate than a mold or impression We also use our iTero to take digital impressions for our patients who are starting Invisalign treatment.
WHAT OTHER NEW TECHNOLOGY DO YOU USE TO IMPROVE PATIENT CARE? Patient care is our number one priority and the tools we use matter. One of my favorite pieces of technology is our THOR laser. For our patients with TMJ pain, THOR uses infrared light and is fantastic at targeting the area around the joint and relieving discomfort. Our office also uses a LightScalpel laser. These surgical CO2 lasers are FDA cleared for use in soft-tissue surgeries, such as a frenectomy. Some of my other favorite pieces of equipment are our cone beam computed tomography, a state-of-the-art medical imaging technique that has become increasingly important in implant dentistry, and the VELscope Enhanced Oral Cancer Assessment System, which can help us identify abnormalities, including oral cancer.
HOW DO YOU MAKE PATIENTS COMFORTABLE WITH DENTAL APPOINTMENTS? We pride ourselves on building relationships. Our goal is for patients to see that we pay attention to them from the minute they walk through our door, that we ask appropriate questions and listen to their answers to make the visit a positive experience. We want to make sure our patients get exactly what they want. Jane, who has logged more than two million flight miles over 30 years as a global corporate executive relocation professional, discusses the benefits of using a travel advisor and what trips you should be considering for 2024 to make your friends envious.
WHY USE A TRAVEL ADVISOR? Properly researching trips and finding deals takes a lot of time and energy. WHEN SHOULD PEOPLE CONSIDER TRAVEL INSURANCE? Trip protection and travel insurance are important to consider, especially if you are traveling to places outside of your U.S. medical insurance coverage area. If you travel frequently you can buy a plan with coverage for a year or just for a specific trip. I’ve seen people get sick and have to be airlifted off of cruise ships,

which could incur an expense of $100,000 without medical insurance. Non-U.S. hospitals want payment up front; good travel insurance would cover all that. We recommend trip protection because things happen. What if you book a trip a year out, then learn you have a major deadline at work and cannot go. WHAT ARE THE HOT TRIPS FOR 2024? Since the bucket list locations—Hawaii, Alaska and Europe—are booking like mad and there’s not a lot of options left, consider traveling to Central and Latin America or Africa instead. You can go to Iceland in the summer to see the aurora borealis or to the South Pole in January—it’s their summer so it is still cold but not as frigid—to see penguins. Or you can go to space.

Lifelong friends Violet Slowinski and Reid Taylor, both first graders at Crim Primary School and Martinsville residents, first met as babies in strollers tagging along at their older sisters’ dance competitions. Over the past seven years, their friendship has flourished and they have spent many days together swimming in the Taylor family pool and vacationing down the Shore. Get ready to make your home twinkle, sparkle and glow! The season of cheery lights and cheerful exteriors are almost upon us. How will your house look this holiday? Classic with white lights and garland or a unique color combination that will rank your residence as a must-view of the neighborhood? Lighting your house for the holidays conjures images of Clark Griswold in “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” precariously scaling his roof to adorn his house with 25,000 twinkling incandescent lights in search of a “fun, old-fashioned family Christmas.” Don’t be that guy.

Since 2016, Kevin Young and his team at Shack Shine have been helping homeowners realize their dream holiday displays. The Somerville-based business offers a variety of services—window cleaning, power washing, gutter cleaning and roof cleaning—but starting in early September, they launch into holiday light installations. And with over 200 houses on their client list, the season is a busy one, with installations continuing up to December 20. Decorating homes for Diwali officially kicks off the holiday season. “We do a lot of beautiful displays illuminating the front and entrances of homes to help residents celebrate this festival of lights,” he says. When it comes to holiday displays, Young has seen it all. “Colors are popular. We’ve done custom color patterns for
people, from candy cane designs to completely random combinations, like pink, blue and orange patterns, for a cotton candy light display. They can be very unique,” he says. Many people come to him seeking to evoke a childhood memory. “They are usually looking for a certain color, whether it is white lights or a specific color pattern,” he says. “We recently did a display for a family whose father had always done the lights and had passed away. They wanted to exactly duplicate his display.” Before beginning a project, Young will meet with the homeowner to discuss what they are looking to do so he can present ideas, show a mock-up of the display and present price options. “We use a variety of clips to hang lights without damage; we do not put holes in a house,” he says. “Then, we return at the end of the season to remove everything.” CONTINUED >

Last year, Young mainly received requests for traditional white lights, but in years prior the candy cane pattern was the rage. In addition to holiday displays, Young is often called to bring that special sparkle to weddings and other events. His work can be seen at the Ross Farm annual holiday light display and the light installation on the corners of Mount Bethel Road and Mountain Boulevard in Warren.

So, how does this Master of Light decorate his own home each year? “My family has been in our current house for five years and at least four of them have been different,” he says. “We have done the classic treatment with wreaths and garland, then the following year, we’ll do all kinds of crazy colors.
