An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. In a house dominated by strong women—we have four daughters and even our guinea pig, Polly, is a girl—Jake takes his job as the “man of the house” quite seriously. While this is far below a pre-pandemic seasonal average of 135 available homes, it's encouraging to see 11 in one week. The hope is that new listings will accelerate even further. In January and February, we barely had 20 homes available.

RVCC Receives Grants to Expand Educational Opportunities for Students Raritan Valley Community College received two Opportunity Meets Innovation Challenge Grants from
the Office of the Secretary of Higher Education that total over $983,000. The “Creating On-ramps to College” grant focuses on areas such as accelerating completion, removing barriers and creating pathways to education and work. In February, Damien Hamlett joined its management team as Head Golf Professional. And the country club, which partners with Troon, the leader in premier luxury golf course management, recently approved its Master Plan. This phased project includes improvements to the pool area and clubhouse, upgraded locker rooms, golf course enhancements, housed hitting bays on the driving range and a renovated racquets pavilion with the addition of paddle, a fitness center and golf simulators.

Hamlett has been on the links since he was six, when he began playing with his dad and brother. His love for the game led him to his career as a PGA Professional. He is active in the New Jersey Section of the PGA of America and competes regularly in numerous annual tournaments and pro-ams. Although Hamlett is a professional, he still feels the same highs and lows that come with the game as recreational golfers. “Golf is a very mental game; it is really played within the six inches between your ears,” he says. “We get frustrated. We have to find a way to relax on the golf course and not let one bad shot wreck the rest of our game.” Hamlett says one of the biggest benefits of golf is that it gets you outdoors and your body moving. “It’s pure exercise. If you walk and play 18 holes, depending on the course, you could be walking 6.5 to 7 miles on average,” he says. “When you swing the club, you use muscles you don’t normally use.” Hamlett advises beginning golfers take time to learn how to play the game well. “The only way that you can learn the game is to get out on the golf course. You're not going to get a full understanding of the game if you’re playing from the tee box. Play from the middle of the fairway, where you’re going to get the ball on the green so you learn the game properly,” he says. While golf is often thought of as primarily a sport for men, Hamlett encourages wives, girlfriends and daughters to join the men they love on the links. One of his initiatives is promoting golf to women, which includes creating an advanced teaching program, from clinics to private lessons, with a social aspect. One example is Drinks on the Links, during which women can sip a specialty cocktail while learning. “If businesswomen get invited to go on a golf outing, never say no, even if you are a beginner,” he advises. “Because once you say no, you will be moved down the asking list.” Golf, Hamlett says, can be a family affair. To get children out on the links, the country club offers a children’s clinic on Saturdays, junior golf academy in the summer and a PGA Junior League golf team, which Hamlett explains is like a baseball Little League. “It's a fun team and a social environment to help kids learn the game,” he says. The biggest mistake he sees golfers make is trying to see how far they can hit the ball. “I’ve done this myself. After all, the object is to get the ball in the hole in the fewest number of strokes as possible,” he admits. “So, golfers will hit 500 yards in two shots and then it will take them six shots to get the ball in the hole from 20 yards. That's what frustrates golfers: They will hit the ball very well, but then they can’t figure out why they are not scoring well. They may be taking 50 percent of their shots from inside 50 yards. They should practice the short game: hitting inside 50 yards from the hole.” This is where the mental aspect comes in. “I feel like golf pros should be psychologists since it’s such a mental game. In fact, the best players are the best mentally,” Hamlett says. “Over the past few years, I’ve put more emphasis on having fun. I will hit some good shots, I will hit some bad shots, but I don’t worry as much about my score as that plays into that mental aspect and can get in the way of focusing on technique. THIS GRILLED SUMMER SEAFOOD SALAD PUTS A NEW SPIN ON YOUR FATHER’S DAY BBQ PARTY
GRILLED SUMMER SEAFOOD SALAD ingredients: • • • • • • • • • •
One navel orange, halved 1 tbsp honey ¼ cup good extra-virgin olive oil ½ tsp kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper to taste 8–10 calamari squid tubes, patted dry 1 lb large shrimp, peeled, de-veined, patted dry 1 bag baby arugula 1 red bell pepper, de-seeded and finely chopped 1 c jumbo lump crab meat
directions: 1. Preheat grill on high. 2. In a small bowl, juice one half of the orange. Scoop out the orange flesh sections from the other half, discarding the pith and reserve. 3. In the same small bowl, whisk together honey, extra-virgin olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper and reserve. 4. Making sure seafood is pat dry well first, lightly brush calamari tubes and shrimp with olive oil and place on the grill, grilling for about 2 minutes per side. (If calamari tubes are large, it may be a bit longer. Look for the grill marks on the bottom side before turning.) 5. Remove from heat and slice calamari tubes to form rings. 6. In a large bowl, combine arugula, red pepper, orange sections and crab meat. Pour dressing over top and toss well to combine. 7. Top with grilled seafood and serve.

Clustered in the suburbs, these majestic animals are the homeowner’s worst nightmare: the uninvited dinner guests who never go home. For the last 40 years, Bridgewaterbased Deer Solution has been keeping the does, fawns and bucks at bay. The company—which has been owned since 2008 by Kristopher and Jaime Goodrich, a married couple who met as high schoolers in New Jersey—works with clients in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. “There is no 100-percent deer-proof solution,” Kristopher says. “But there are ways to lessen the impact,” Jaime adds.

“Early childhood education sets the foundation for future learning,” says Anthony Mina, owner of The Learning Experience in Basking Ridge and Warren, which were founded in 2013 and 2004 respectively. The Learning Experience—a national company of early childhood education centers for children 6 weeks to 13 years—sets the academic curriculum. “The children are engaged all throughout their day at The Learning Experience. They move through different learning centers that allow them to learn by doing interactive play and learning from our proprietary LEAP academic program,” says Regional Director Katina Medina. Children are moved to a different classroom every six months to challenge them. The Learning Experience has offered private kindergarten—an especially crucial time for education—for over 16 years. “We’ve found our graduates are more advanced when they go to the first grade and are the ones selected for advanced programs,” says Mina. The center puts an emphasis on language skills. In addition to phonics, children are taught Spanish and Mandarin. The technology is also state-of-the-art. “We just upgraded five smartboards,” Mina says. “It’s important for the children to keep up with the latest technology.” Enrichment programs are integral to the curriculum, not add-ons. “Children participate in activities such as yoga, math and Music for Me,” says Johanne Alameda, School Director, Basking Ridge. “They take instructional material home for continued learning.” For school-age children, the center provides beforeand after-care, which includes breakfast, homework assistance, outdoor play and clubs. “Children can explore interests like cooking and karate through after-school clubs,” says Medina. “I tell parents starting out that they’re going to have new friendships,” says Medina, who notes the center schedules fun family programs. “Some of the older children who grew up in the program and are in high school have returned to work for us in the afternoon.” Both Learning Experience centers strive to be a vital part of their towns. “We succeeded in creating our own community that enhances the bigger community,” says Mina. The centers also focus on supporting causes, such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation as well as local fundraisers and sponsor recreational events, such as movie nights and summer camps. CRAFT AND C O C K TA I L GRAPEFRUIT CUCUMBER FIZZ MAKES 2 COCKTAILS
THE GOODS + Ice
+ 4 ounces cucumber-basil infused gin + 1 cup fresh pink grapefruit juice + 1 cup ginger beer + 3 tablespoons basil cut into ribbons + Fresh grapefruit wedges + Fresh cucumber slices
HOW TO
01 Add a half cup of cucumber slices and 2 tablespoons of basil ribbons to 1 cup of gin.
02 Refrigerate overnight. 03 Strain the gin and reserve 4 ounces. 04 Divide ice between two tall glasses. 05 Add gin and divide the grapefruit juice between glasses. 06 Top with ginger beer and garnish with grapefruit wedges, cucumber slices and thinly sliced basil ribbons. 07 Enjoy. Cheers!
