Center for Contemporary Art Names New Director
The JCC Cyclones FC is offering a new youth Soccer Training Program beginning in April. The 10-week, outdoor training program is a collaboration of the NJ Cyclones and the Shimon and Sara Birnbaum Jewish Community Center. It is open to children in grades three to five. The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster has appointed Cyndi Wish as its new Executive Director. Wish is a practicing visual artist who works in printmaking, drawing and collage and has held arts administration positions around the nation. The Somerset County Agriculture Development Board received a 2021 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award for implementing outstanding environmental programs and projects supporting healthy and sustainable communities. “Because of the Ag Board’s public outreach, farmers have reported unparalleled sales in 2020 and 2021,” said Somerset County Commissioner Paul Drake. “These marketing efforts have resulted in more young people becoming interested in farming, and our county is being recognized as the state leader for femaleowned and operated farms.”

NETHRA RAJU INSPIRES GIRLS TO THINK CREATIVELY ABOUT SCIENTIFIC CAREERS THROUGH HER GIRL SCOUT GOLD AWARD PROJECT
When she was in the first grade, Nethra Raju gravitated toward the Girl Scouts because she liked the idea of selling cookies to friends and family. “I thought it would get me out of my shell, allow me to speak to people and learn how to manage money,” Raju says. Over the years, the Girl Scouts built her confidence, honed her skills as a public speaker, helped her forge lifelong friendships and showed her the power of women working toward a common goal. Raju, a senior at Ridge High School, recalls being impressed by her leaders—a doctor and a professor—who, despite their professional demands, took the time to manage the troop. Inspired, she decided to empower girls, teenagers and women in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics) careers and highlight achievements of women in these professions. She began designing Project STEAM as she pursued her Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. For a Gold Award project, a Girl Scout selects a topic she is passionate about that can be continued by other people and devotes at least 80 hours to implementing it. Ideally, the project reaches beyond the immediate community and has a wider impact. In Project STEAM, Raju teaches six virtual classes to girls in kindergarten to third grade and six classes to girls in grades four to six over six-week periods. She also uses social media to educate girls about STEAM careers and motivate women in these fields to encourage them. The project has expanded with team members and followers across the globe creating posts and determining content ideas.

Remember those days as a child when you would fling open the door and join your friends in backyards and wooded areas, just exploring, spotting wildlife and creating adventures—until the streetlights came on, heralding dinnertime? Your family can recreate those cherished memories at the Environmental Education Center (EEC) in Basking Ridge. The EEC is part of lands that were the historic home to Paleo-Indians, the Lenni-Lenape and Lord Stirling, a Major General of the Continental Army, that border the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which was once part of a glacial lake 10,000 years ago. It consists of 550 acres of preserved natural space, including nine-and-a-half miles of trails awaiting discoverers of all ages. Four-and-a-half miles of those trails are boardwalks that allow you to investigate the wildlife and plants in the wetlands. The EEC, which serves as a trustee to preserve and maintain these undeveloped lands, was at the cutting-edge of sustainability when it opened almost 50 years ago: It was the first building in the country to have solar panels; it also had geothermal heat. “We are dedicated to stimulating awareness and understanding of the natural world in order to foster a sense of responsibility for its care and use through environmental, cultural and recreational learning experiences,” says Carrie Springer, Environmental Science Department manager. “We want people to care and appreciate the environment around them. So many people do not know what is in their own backyard.” There is a variety of habitats to explore in the acres surrounding the EEC: field, forest, river, streams, marsh and swamp. On April 24, the EEC will host Swamp Search, a self-guided opportunity for people to explore the trail. The event is free, with no pre-registration required. “It is set up like a scavenger hunt. Participants get a clue book to figure out where to find experts from groups like Friends of the Great Swamp, Somerset County Master Gardeners and our own park naturalists,” Springer says. “When people reach the stations, they can talk about a variety of topics such as ecology, birds, plants and insects. Some stations will include live animals, including a bird from the Raptor Trust and educational animals and insects from the Environmental Educational Center.” CONTINUED >

The trails and building are open daily for exploration. “When you walk the trails, you really can begin to appreciate how the wetland systems benefit us,” says Somerset County Commissioner Paul Drake. “These systems provide incredible flood control and habitats for species, some endangered. Bring your binoculars, birdwatch, gently turn over logs and look for critters, salamanders and snakes and all the great animals that call the Great Swamp home.” At the EEC, visitors can explore “The Great Swamp Experience” interactive exhibit, crawl through a beaver lodge or browse the touchable pieces. The calendar is filled with year-round programs for children and adults. Its instructional classes in canoeing and kayaking—from mid-April to the end of October—are especially popular. After taking the instructional class, people can sign up for various river, pond or canal trips guided by a naturalist. “Spring in the swamp is a very fun, wet time,” Springer says. “There’s a lot of splashing in puddles, a lot of mud. HOW ACUPUNCTURE AND OTHER CHINESE MEDICINE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO YOUR OVERALL WELLBEING
Candace Jania started every single day with a migraine. She tried everything. But nothing helped—until she discovered acupuncture. It not only relieved her pain, but it also changed her life: She went back to school, earning a doctorate in acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and for the last 16 years she has been using the ancient art of acupuncture and other Asian remedies to treat patients at her Acupuncture Center in Basking Ridge. The center, which has an on-site pharmacy stocked with Chinese herbs, focuses on reproductive health, pain relief and family health. With a combination of treatments, Jania, a Fellow on the American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine, and her associates, Michael Gonzales and Hannah Ciraco, create custom wellness plans for each patient. “Chinese medicine has been around for 5,000 years,” she says. “Its longevity proves its effectiveness.” Q. When people hear the word “acupuncture,” they immediately think of—and often shrink from—needles. A. I personally would love to change the word “needle.” Each one is as thin as a hair and I generally use only 10 to 30 per treatment . It’s not like a hypodermic, which tears the skin tissues; it is inserted between the tissues. Q. But it’s still a needle. A. I fine-tune its insertion so each patient is comfortable, and for the initial insertion I sometimes use a small plastic guide tube. It’s very relaxing; some people tell me it’s even more relaxing than a massage.
RECIPE FOR COMBATING ILLNESSES • 2 tsp fresh ginger, grated • 2 tsp scallions (white parts), chopped • Dash of cinnamon (if you’re feeling clammy) Add boiling water and let steep for 12 minutes. Add a touch of honey (optional). Drink this mixture while wrapped in blankets. Repeat until you sweat.
Q. It still doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience. A. It is, of course, a medical treatment in a medical office, but everything at our clinic is geared toward the patient experience. We make it a relaxing event. There are heat lamps, bed warmers, soft music and low lighting. You close your eyes. It’s a healing experience. Q. So it’s like going to a spa. A. I assess each patient, noting their sensitivities, and I talk them through the procedure. After all the needles are in, they generally stay in for about 25 minutes. You really do feel amazing because it moderates the sympathetic nervous system—your fight or flight responses. Your heart rate goes down, your temperature goes down, your muscles relax and your hormones and brain are regulated. I have some patients who use it for stress reduction. CONTINUED >

Q. That sounds wonderful. How do I know whether acupuncture can help me? A. Most people associate acupuncture with pain relief, but it can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including anxiety, digestive issues, allergies and reproductive, urinary and neurological disorders. Q. What if I have multiple issues? A. I take an extensive, individualized history of each patient at our initial appointment to find the underlying imbalance because everything is related in Chinese medicine. I also look at your tongue and check your pulse. We treat the root cause as well as the symptoms of the disease. And we choose a personalized path for each patient. Q. So acupuncture is only part of the equation? A. That’s correct. Depending on my assessment, I may use a variety of other treatments from Chinese medicine to get the desired results. I may also suggest herbal medicines, dietary therapy, exercise and lifestyle recommendations. Cupping and gua sha may also be options. Q. Cupping: That’s the therapy that mega-medalist Michael Phelps used at the 2016 Olympics. You could see the red-circle marks on his back when he was swimming. A. Yes, he and other athletes use cupping. It’s wonderful; it’s kind of like a reverse massage. It breaks up tight muscles and increases range of motion, and we generally use it on the upper back and shoulders in conjunction with acupuncture because it helps to relax the body at the fascial level. It increases the blood flow and decreases inflammation.

Q. What does it involve? A. We choose the area to be cupped and put oil on it. Then we apply small glass cups; they are called “fire cups” because we place a flame inside them to heat them up to create a vacuum. We place them on the skin and leave them there for five to 10 minutes. They act as suction cups; it’s like having someone gently go over your skin with the hose of a vacuum cleaner. It leaves red circles, but they don’t hurt at all. Q. You also mentioned gua sha. A. Yes, that’s another effective ancient treatment in which a smooth, stone-like implement is used to scrape the skin to break up tension in the muscles. The movement creates small red dots under the skin that look like a mild rash. The whole treatment takes only a few minutes, and it’s gentle enough to even use on babies.
