City Lifestyle Somerset Hills has arrived! Welcome to our premiere issue. We are excited about this opportunity to serve the residents of Basking Ridge, Bedminster, Bernardsville and Far Hills. Allow us to introduce ourselves. My name is Tiffany, and together with my husband, Jake, we have been publishing our lifestyle magazine in Bridgewater for the past two years. Bridgewater’s response to the publication has been humbling, and we’ve been regularly asked by our readers when we planned to expand to other communities… Well that time is now! How did we land on Somerset Hills? Well, it was what the people were asking for! There’s no other publication like this here. It’s something the community has longed for. Our daughters also attend school in Basking Ridge, and we felt a strong connection to the community. We want to expand our presence to a place we know and love. For a little background on us: We met at Rutgers University—Go Knights! We currently reside in Bridgewater with our four daughters. It’s never a dull moment around here and our girls keep us on our toes. Curious about what it takes to run a magazine and what our life looks like? Turn to page 36 to see what it’s like to live a day in our lives. One of the most exciting facets of our publication is that it truly belongs to the Somerset Hills community. This is your magazine, so we encourage you to contact us with any recommendations for articles for our upcoming issues. We would love to hear about your business, charity, event, family or passion project. We look forward to seeing you around town! Never hesitate to stop us and say hello.

When you walk past B Boutique’s window, be prepared to do a double-take. It’s likely that the fashion-forward window display is very different from the one you saw just a few days ago. Owner Christina Gianni, a veteran of high-end retail in California and New York, likes to generate buzz. Nothing here is static. Gianni, a San Francisco native who acquired the former Bling Boutique in 2017 and renamed it Bling By Design before reinventing it as B Boutique in 2021, spent 25 years working for luxury brands in California and Manhattan—Gucci, Coach, Prada, Dior, MaxMara and Christian Louboutin—on the sales floor, as a stylist and in management. She honed her eye on trends and staples and thrived on helping customers create their unique look. After decades navigating the rigors of fashion retail, Gianni pivoted to a new career as an international flight attendant for

United Airlines, which allowed her a much-needed respite. But she continued to dream of returning to fashion with a store of her own. The opportunity presented itself when she moved to Bernardsville in 2016 with her husband and took a part-time holiday job at Bling and was intrigued when she heard that the owner was contemplating selling. Gianni jumped at the chance. She bought Bling and put her stamp on it by incorporating her funky urban California vibe. For a time, she kept her flight attendant job, taking leaves of absence to work full-time in the store when there was less demand for European flights. She quit the airline in 2018 and Bling continued to take off. “Bernardsville is a close-knit community that supports its businesses and are receptive to new concepts,” she says. “All the boutiques in the area are beautiful, and they all offer different merchandise. If I don’t have something a customer wants, I will let them know where they can find it.” Customers delight in Gianni’s aesthetic for women’s jewelry, accessories and clothing. When they come into the boutique, she draws on her experience as a stylist to help them put together a complete look. “I don’t like to push boundaries, but I want women to get out of their comfort zone,” she says. “My collaborator, Tara Lynn Vitollo, owner of Shop Olcott, and I look for quality and affordability. Our customers can buy pieces that have an elevated look, but they won’t overspend for beauty.” Fans of Gianni’s quirky design aesthetic now have another outlet: In 2021, she and co-owner Desiree Mazzarese opened Guest House, a home and gift boutique in Basking Ridge. “People love coming in to find fun pieces,” she says. “Where else can you find a monkey bowl with the monkey holding up a palm leaf alongside a bust of Marie Antoinette?” Browse the latest styles at b-boutique-nj.myshopify. com, shopolcott.com and guesthousenj.com.

Ristorante MV and Trattoria MV Keep Old World Italian Traditions Alive and Forge a Legend’s Next Chapter ARTICLE BY PATTI ZIELINSKI PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA GIOIA VOLPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Anthony Vitiello would be proud of the legacy he created. The Naples, Italy, native learned how to cook in the Italian Merchant Marines and brought his family to the United States for a better life in the early 1950s, settling in Brooklyn. After working at a few Italian restaurants, he realized that the busiest ones were Americanized. With his savings, he bought Regina Pizza and translated the Italian “Regina” to its American version: Queen. While the building was under renovation, he kept the locals pleased by serving 5-cent slices from a window. The popular Queen Pizzeria fueled demand for more Old World cooking from Vitiello, and so he expanded, opening an Italian restaurant with an extensive menu. Soon, his two sons, Vincent and Pasquino, who studied culinary arts, joined him, honing the menu to more regional Italian classics. After Anthony passed away, the brothers reinvented the restaurant, launching the next phase for Queen. It was here that Pasquino’s son, Michael Vitiello, learned the business from his father and uncle, working at Queen for 14 of its 64-plus years of uninterrupted business. When the brothers decided to close the Queen in the spirit of safety during the pandemic and Vincent retired, Vitiello, who was raised in Bergen County, and his father, who lived in Oradell, began talking about bringing their successful Brooklyn business model of Italians cooking authentic food to New Jersey. During the shutdown, Vitiello began spending more time with his fiancé, now wife, Michelle, who lived in Bernardsville—and he fell in love with the area and the people. While out for drinks with Michelle and her parents at Rudolph’s Steakhouse, Vitiello started admiring the building and its potential. “It was like a castle,” he says. He spotted the owner at a back table and with the same creative tenacity of his grandfather serving pizza slices through a window, Vitiello hatched a plan. “I couldn’t just walk up to him and offer to buy him out,” he says. “I ordered a crazy bottle of wine—a 1987 Lisini

Brunello—from his personal wine list, knowing it would make him curious. I knew the bartender would break the cork; it had been on the shelf for 30 years. Lo and behold that is what happened. The owner jumped up, grabbed a strainer and decanter and next thing you know, I am telling him my story about wanting to open my restaurant in Bernardsville—and he offered to show me his building for consideration.” Once the sale was final, Vitiello and his father set to work, renovating the building in 50 days, importing materials from Italian leather to a white Carrara marble bar, restoring the

Linguine alla Norma INGREDIENTS • Extra virgin olive oil • 2 Japanese eggplants • 3 garlic cloves • 2 fresh vine ripe tomatoes • 1 can La Valle DOP whole canned tomatoes

• Salt, oregano, red pepper, basil and parsley • 1 lb De Cecco linguine • 3 tbs Pecorino Romano cheese • Ricotta Salata

PREP Dice garlic. Put a pot of water on to boil, adding salt to the point it has the same salinity of the Mediterranean Sea. Crush canned tomatoes by hand. Zebra-stripe the eggplant (peel from top to bottom in a row and then skip a row and then peel another row). Cut the eggplant into small squares. Dice vine ripe tomatoes. Grate Ricotta Salata.

PROCESS Coat a small fry pan with oil and fry eggplant squares for about 4 minutes. Remove and let dry on a paper towel. In a saucepan, add virgin olive oil and diced garlic, and put on medium heat. When the garlic is golden, add the chopped tomato and sauté for a few minutes over a low flame. Add crushed tomatoes. (Depending on how much you’re making, you don’t want to lose the fresh vine ripe tomato in the canned so add just enough to make a base.) Add the eggplant to the mixture and let simmer for 20 minutes, adding salt, oregano, red pepper, basil and parsley to taste. Add linguine to the boiling water. In about 8 minutes, the linguine will be at the perfect al dente and will be ready to strain. Remove about one-half of the sauce from the saucepan and place in another pot. Toss the linguine in one pot filled with half of the sauce and put on low heat, while continually moving the pasta. The sauce will adhere to the pasta. After about 5 minutes of sauteing the pasta, turn off heat. Add Pecorino Romano and mix. Plate the pasta and top with the extra sauce and Ricotta Salata.

circa-1900s copper ceiling and painting the walls in the bar a high-gloss cobalt blue. “We wanted this to be a neighborhood place like you’d get in New York’s West Village—a place that is high end, but where you wouldn’t need a jacket,” he says. They opened Ristorante MV and Trattoria MV (“an Italian twist on your modern sports bar”) in March 2021. “We replicated all our multi-generational family recipes from Queen with attention to quality ingredients,” he says. “Our sauce is a big hit. No one makes tomato sauce like we do; it’s an eight-hour process, rendering prosciutto and roasting pork skins and veal trimmings with the tomatoes, onions and garlic.” As a tribute to their management, 75 percent of the staff is from Queen. “Some have been with us over 40 years; we have a long history with this crew,” Vitiello says. “As chef-owners, my dad and I are on the line, working the broiler, plating and finishing.” Although reservations currently extend upward of two months, take heart: If you walk in or make a reservation between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on a Monday or Wednesday, you may catch a coveted seat. And when you do, don’t be surprised if you spot prominent business executives, politicians or football players like Saquon Barkley and Eli Manning at a table nearby. “I have so much gratitude to my father and uncle, who taught me this business and so many life lessons,” he says. “In the office there is a photo of my grandfather. He would be proud to see how far we took his company and that we are still making everything in-house. He started with nickles and dimes and his business evolved into this. He gave jobs to so many people and helped families have a better life. I feel honored to be a part of what he started.” Reserve a table at ristorantemv.com.

Dr. Lawrence V. Najarian Shares Expert Advice on Keeping Your Eyes Healthy This Winter ARTICLE BY NANCY A . RUH LING | PHOTOG R APHY BY H E LE N L AWLE R, INSPIORMX

What can you do to protect your eyes from the harshness of winter? Wear sunglasses. That’s probably not the advice you expected, but it’s the top tip offered by Dr. Lawrence V. Najarian, an ophthalmologist who has been helping patients see better during a career that spans more than 33 years. In addition to blocking harmful UVA and UVB rays that increase the risk of cataracts, the proper sunglasses protect the eyes from traumatic injuries. “People associate sunglasses with summer activities, but they should also be worn all year round,” says Najarian, an avid skier and kayaker and the founder and medical director of Bedminster Eye & Laser Center, which also has offices in his hometown of Teaneck. “Winter sports can present danger: Your eyes can get sunburned by the light reflected off the snow and every year, there are people who get hit in the eye with snowballs.” While you’re putting on your sunglasses, you might also want to put out your cigarettes, he adds, because smoking increases the risk not only of cataracts but also of macular degeneration, a common eye disorder for those who are 50 and older. “Actually, the precautions that people have been taking during COVID—washing their hands and keeping their hands away from their eyes—have cut down on conditions like colds and pink eye,” he says. Despite the best health-care practices, though, accidents do happen, which is why Najarian’s offices are open six days a week. (He attends to emergencies 24/7.) “We offer routine and specialized medical care, such as cataract and glaucoma surgery, and we also have an optical shop,” he says, adding that he has performed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries since he opened his first center in 1988. “Our trademark is to be the best small practice and to treat each patient as a VIP. We do not believe that doctors are interchangeable, which is the way big clinics sometimes operate. Taking time to get to know patients is very important to their overall health care.” Najarian, a self-described night owl who works from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and is so available via smartphone that he often recognizes his patients’ voices when they call, devotes a significant amount of time to philanthropy and teaching. For three decades, he has been a voluntary faculty member at New York University and at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, and for the last 11 years, he has been president of the Armenian American Health Professionals Organization, a charitable group that provides health education and healthcare services to underserved populations in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut as well as in Armenia, the home country of his immigrant parents.

Through that organization, Najarian has led medical missions to Armenia, facilitated the donation of a $1-million microsurgical training laboratory, helped provide training to physicians in rural villages and raised money for telehealth programming. Najarian, a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, an Eagle Scout and an Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient as well as a husband and father of three adult children, also regularly gives lectures to New Jersey community groups on good health practices to facilitate the prevention and early detection of eye disease. “The concept of giving back is something that was ingrained in me,” he says. “I come from a family of philanthropists, and I was always taught to help others.” The workload may be great, he says, but the rewards are even greater. “I’m now seeing a fourth generation of patients,” he says. “It makes life rewarding to be able to help people.” Find out how to keep your eyes healthy at bedminstereye.net.

Happy New Year! Wishing everyone a healthy, safe, and prosperous New Year!

Is the notion of a Spring Market still relevant?

Marie Young

At press time, (11/24): There are 36 homes available for sale in Basking Ridge. Less than 30 are single family. In 2018, that number was 171.

Cell: 908.938.2525

Office: 908.766.0808 Demand remains high and buyers are willing to pay a premium for the right home. With seven of my listings going under contract this month, the seasonality of the market around school dates has taken a back seat to securing a home all year long. Whether your timing is January or down the road, please call me. I can help you have your home staged and ready, so that when you are ready to make that move, or the market says "now," your work is done. With over 60 sales in 2021, I am ready to bring that experience and local knowledge to work for you. Because... you get one chance at a first impression!
