Home is Where the Heart Is!

Home is where the heart is. There’s no place like home. Home is where you lay your head. I think the point of all of this is that home is wherever you want it to be. Some people have huge mansions but their homes are relegated to one room because that’s where they spend all of their time! Some people have one-bedroom apartments but they’re never there because they are at their offices 16 hours a day and their office feels more like home to them. Some people have homes everywhere, because the world is their oyster and wherever they are, they make it home. And unfortunately, some people have no home at all. They have a place where they “live," but they have no place they “love.” No matter where you call home, be sure to protect it. Guard it with your life. Keep it your safe place. Don’t let it be invaded with negative thoughts, negative people, or negative actions. Keep it away from anything that will cause it to break down. Where is home for you? When I first bought the magazine, I remember people would stop me all around #SoFu, and say, “You look familiar. Have I seen you somewhere?” I’d respond, “Yeah! You see me every month in your home for the last 8 years!” I consider it an honor that you let my publication and me in your home; that you consider us safe! Thank you for that. Speaking of home, we have a great issue this month. We’ll be focusing on amazing things for your personal home and your community home, including cool places to go and fun events. Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre Company Presents "Good Bad People" World Premiere To kick off its 2023 20th Anniversary celebration, True Colors Theatre presents the world premiere of “Good Bad People,” which explores contemporary America as a family deals with the emotional trauma of the death of a son, playing through March 12 at Southwest Arts Center. A crisp January Saturday night was hot inside Atlantucky Brewing when Savage Brand Enterprises and Gagnant Media presented Leading Men of Film and Television. Hundreds of attendees and media gathered in the Nappy Rootsowned establishment to celebrate, connect, and be inspired by the Leading Men panel of Kevin Savage, Rico Ball, Tray Chaney, and Julian Brittano. The red carpet was electric, expertly hosted by Summer Jackson, a multi-talented TV personality and journalist. SHEEN Magazine, Radio 92.3 HITS, and more were on hand to interview the esteemed panelists, sponsors, elected officials, and VIPs. Champagne flowed along with conversations as attendees networked and socialized with peers and industry professionals, underscored by DJ Hershey serving up tunes. Media executive and publisher of SOFU Lifestyle Magazine, Michelle Taylor Willis took the mic and introduced viral R&B sensation Sean Love for a live performance before cueing up a highlights reel of the impressive body of work of the panelists. For a generous hour-plus, the panel answered questions from Mrs. Willis and audience members, giving insight and speaking to the journey from actors starting out to Leading Men of Atlanta and beyond. Each of the Leading Men began their journeys in different ways: for Kevin Savage, recently seen on Lifetime channel’s “Single Black Female,” it was church musicals in his hometown of Philly; Julian Brittano found acting through a reinvention of self and while in the background on OWN’s “Greenleaf,” Oprah found him. Rico Ball was discovered from his work in the theatre, and Tray Chaney, who is the most recent of the panelists to call

Atlanta home, began auspiciously with the five-season recurring role of Poot in the groundbreaking HBO series “The Wire.” But the men were forthcoming about the challenges and dark times of lives in the entertainment industry, with Mr. Chaney saying after “The Wire” ended, his phone didn’t ring for 5 long years. During that time, unwilling to give up, Mr. Chaney created his own content in his hometown of Washington, D.C., and sold his DVDs out of the trunk of his car. This kind of tenacity and GRIT (“Greatness Revealed In Test” – a mantra of Brittano’s) was echoed by all the panelists. “The dark times will come, but it will depend on how you perceive it,” said Ball, known for his work on the Netflix series “Black Lightning.” “Faith is gonna get you through those dark times.” Savage, the mastermind behind the evening’s event, reminded attendees that “no” doesn’t mean “never,” it just means “not yet.” He emphasized the importance of identifying your “Why,” the thing that drives you, and warned against tying that drive to things that fade away – like fame and fortune. Chaney seconded, “Love the craft, trust the process, eliminate the outcome. Focus on the process and keep going.” In offering attendees actionable steps, the panelists recommended industry basics like having good headshots and taking classes, but also offered broader guidance like getting (and staying) prepared and finding community. Chaney reminded everyone, “Don’t sleep on nobody. You don’t know who getting ready to pop.” Ball recommended, “Talk less, listen – keep everybody your friend.” In a heartfelt conclusion, Savage presented awards to his co-panelists and his event partner, Willis, followed by an emotional tribute to his family. A beautiful, fondant covered three-tiered cake by Black Diamond Edible Creations, decorated in a tuxedo and Savage Brand Enterprises logo, was sliced and served, and VIPs mingled with their gift bags on their arms containing goodies from sponsors Talero Luxury Organic Tequila, CreditHub, and Joistik. What promised to be an unforgettable evening delivered on that promise.

She and Savage make a powerhouse team, so be on the lookout for the next opportunity to experience a Leading {fill in the blank} event. It’s almost that time of year—spring! For many, spring is a time to renew and refresh. Finding interesting ways to refresh and renew your home can help you enjoy spring vibes every day while also imparting potential health benefits! 1. Pick up fragrant flowers. Fragrant flowers, like my favorites—lilies—will have your home smelling like fresh spring air! Oriental lilies have a strong, classic lily smell, while Asiatic lilies are virtually unscented—be sure to choose according to your senses. Lavender, gardenia, and jasmine are great options. Lavender has been known to relax you. Gardenia has been cited to enhance cognitive ability and protect memory. 2. Change your window treatments. Heavy curtains in color or weight often scream winter or fall. Light colored, airy fabrics give the home a more spring feel and let in more light. Consider keeping your blinds pulled up and open to really let the spring sunlight shine in. Research suggests that sunlight could help you recharge more effectively, work more efficiently, and feel better as a result. 3. Change your bedding. Much like heavy window treatments, heavy bedding can weigh down the overall look and feel of the home. Consider lighter colors and fabrics that herald spring. Just because spring has sprung doesn’t mean that cold nights are completely at bay. You should still keep a basket of extra blankets beside your

If you don’t have any plants, now is a great time to get easy to care for plants. Greenery adds pizzazz to any home. There are many simple house plants that need little to no care. Snake plants, spider plants, and pothos are some very low-maintenance plants that will add color and potential health benefits to your home. Plants bring in extra oxygen, which is always a plus! 5. “Alexa, play some nature tunes.” Hearing pleasant sounds of nature will help calm you and make you feel like you are in a beautiful spring garden with your lovely flowers, low-maintenance plants, and light. Nature sounds and green spaces (those beautiful low-maintenance plants—wink!) are known to bring calm and positively impact our well-being. Whether it’s this spring’s NASCAR race in May that brings you to Concord, North Carolina, or something entirely different, once here you’ll find there’s more to this city located in the Charlotte metropolitan area. There’s always time for shopping! With Concord being home to North Carolina’s biggest outlet mall and shopping center, why not? Concord Mills, featuring more than 200 stores, even houses family fun venues including Dave and Buster’s, a 24-screen AMC and IMAX movie theater and the SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Aquarium. Dining options are also onsite—and for this family of three on the move, Bonefish Grill served up a convenient location and memorable meals as well. For dessert, you’ll find plenty of winning homemade flavors, such as maple syrup and blueberry, at the local popular spot OMG Donuts & Bakery. Walk off the food and treats by taking in more dining and shopping options that are within reach by foot in the downtown area of Concord, the county seat and largest city

in Cabarrus County. You’ll also get to take in some of the city’s historical features—in the architectural styles of homes in downtown Concord. This includes Craftsman-style bungalows and Queen Anne Victorian homes. A trip to Concord is even more complete with a visit to The Depot at Gibson Mill, where you’ll have your pick at endless unique finds, thanks to some 750 booths, at what’s considered the largest antique mall in the South. For two true treasure hunters by my side, the spot definitely delivered. Those itching for loads of action—like what you’ll find with the aforementioned NASCAR Cup series race—will want to attend the CocaCola 600 on May 28. You’ll find plenty of action at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The annual race—reportedly the longest race, at some 4 hours, on the NASCAR schedule—draws massive crowds to take in the sights and sounds. Make sure to have those earplugs handy as you root for favorite drivers, such as Bubba Wallace, the second Black driver to win the NASCAR Cup Series, Joey Logano and others. Move from the track to the sky with some indoor skydiving fun at iFLY in Concord. For first timers like my 14-year-old daughter and me, the experience called for us to put on a bit of bravery as we donned our flight suits. The plaza is located in the downtown area of nearby Kannapolis, North Carolina, Earnhardt’s hometown that also boasts its own set of attractions. Kannapolis, also in Cabarrus County, is another walkable area with shopping, dining and a bit of musical heritage, thanks to its North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Kappa Omega Chapter was chartered on March 1, 1923, and celebrates 100 years of providing service and leadership to the Atlanta community. A group of 10 Alpha Kappa Alpha women were compelled by their own experiences to organize the first graduate chapter in the state of Georgia. Kappa Omega Chapter was fortunate that among the 10 charter members was Marie Woolfolk Taylor, one of the original founding members of Alpha Kappa Alpha at Howard University in 1908, when life began for this great sisterhood. Currently, the Kappa Omega Chapter membership has grown to over 500 members. Leadership was provided by a succession of 42 talented, strong, and committed leaders who served as Kappa Omega Chapter presidents. Currently, Bridgette Grant serves as the 43rd president. Kappa Omega Chapter served as the catalyst for growth and expansion of the sorority’s footprint in Georgia. Today there are 17 graduate and nine undergraduate chapters in Metro Atlanta. Service and sisterhood have been the cornerstone of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® since 1908 and Kappa Omega since 1923. Kappa Omega’s rich legacy of service galvanized its membership to lead on the front lines of change, education, and advocacy. Kappa Omega Chapter will kick off its centennial with one of many service projects during the year beginning with the distribution of 1,200 “Pretty Packs” filled with much needed feminine hygiene products for girls in the community. A Wreath Laying Ceremony Pilgrimage to honor Marie Woolfolk Taylor will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at Historic Oakland Cemetery. in Kitchen Design A peek at what’s ahead: bold cabinet colors, statement hardware and swaths of stone.

When designing your dream kitchen, it’s important to balance timeless features with elements that reflect your personality and design aesthetic. You may not plan to remodel your kitchen each year (does anyone do that?), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t creative ways to keep your space feeling modern and fresh. We spoke with interior designer Brooke Cover about the trends in kitchen design she’s seeing this year, touching on everything from cabinet colors and lighting to tile and countertop combos she’s loving.

TA K I N G T H E C O U N T E R M AT E R I A L U P THE BACKSPLASH Although the iconic subway tile backsplash is timeless in its own right, Brooke says she is seeing a big shift toward marble slab backsplashes — which add drama and depth to the kitchen. Not only is it easier to clean than tile, but a marble backsplash and countertop also sets the tone for the entire space and makes a big statement.

WA R M I N G U P THE WHITE We doubt the classic white kitchen will ever completely go out of style, but trends show people are going away from the white kitchen and gray cabinets. They’re opting for white mixed with warmer wood tones, dark greens and blues. Some homeowners are mixing vintage in with the new and modern through butcher block islands or other unique cabinetry choices. Black is making a bold comeback in some kitchens, while others usher in warmth through painted islands or other darker contrast tiles in the bar area. You don’t have to leave behind the timelessness when you warm up your space if you opt for equally timeless black and wood-stained accents. If you want a quick refresh, consider adding pops of wood through cutting boards or other decor accents on countertops or open shelves.

HIDDEN STORAGE, VISIBLE APPLIANCES Gone are the days of it being a given to hide the fridge behind custom cabinets. Many brands of appliances are so beautiful and sleek these days, homeowners want to see them rather than hide them behind a cabinet facade. Small appliances, however, are another story. Custom cabinets and “appliance garages” aren’t going away anytime soon. Form and function make them a desirable addition to any kitchen. CONTINUED >

BOLD H A R D WA R E Mixed metals and sizes are having a moment in kitchens across America. Brooke says not to shy away from a variety of sizes of pulls and handles, depending on the drawer and door size. For instance, you may see a mixture of longer pulls on larger drawers and square knobs on smaller glassware cabinets - and that’s more than just ok - that’s recommended. As the heart of the home, kitchens shouldn’t feel sterile and hyper-coordinated - they should feel inviting and tailored to the space. Since no two kitchens will be exactly alike, feel free to boldly mix the hardware sizes and styles to the needs of your kitchen.

Brooke’s Pro Tip:

From painted and stained islands to dark lower cabinetry with bright white uppers and mixed lighting fixtures, contrast is the name of the game this year. You’ll see this juxtaposition between clean white and darker colors or even this year’s favorite - greens and blues - all over newly designed kitchens. You’re not breaking any rules by coordinating sculptural pendants over the kitchen island with more vintage-inspired gooseneck sconces over the standalone bar or a chandelier over the eat-in kitchen.

I suggest viewing countertop slabs in person vs. a small sample piece because each slab has unique movement and colors. They are all so beautiful and works of art. Taking a trip to the warehouse will really help a client to understand the different types available and see the difference in the look of the material.

“Empower, Inspire, and Motivate” is the mission, says Michelle Dawes Birt, founder and CEO of Real Chicks Rock, a nonprofit organization created for women. Since the launch of Real Chicks Rock, Dawes Birt’s objective was to create a positive environment for women to be exactly who they are—no filters. Michelle recalls growing up in the Bronx, New York, “rockin’” a fresh pair of sneakers, preferably Chuck Taylor Converse, and thinking, “Am I not a real chick because I prefer to wear sneakers instead of heels?” Dawes Birt knew there were other women across the globe just like her, who would gladly wear Chucks over stilettos. This inspired Dawes Birt’s initial brand, Real Chicks Rock Chucks, which created a following on Facebook rapidly, however, she decided to pivot to include all women. “We are all women, but just in different places and phases in our lives…so how can we alleviate this where every woman can feel equal?” she asks. Empowering women to be authentically themselves was her true passion, no matter what shoe they’re wearing. Michelle did just that by creating a safe haven for women in Atlanta. The nonprofit organization gained clout without a doubt after her rebranding and activities to help promote it. Real Chicks Rock exemplifies a brand that collaborates, connects, and raises recognition about issues affecting women through music, media, community services, mentorship, and other means. Her initiative for her mission started by feeding the homeless and sponsoring back-toschool clothing drives for single moms. She also hosts women empowerment workshops, financial literacy, investing and entrepreneurial classes, and “how to start a nonprofit organization” seminars. Through these activities, women are free to be honest and sincere while being able to admit insecurities, vulnerabilities, and flaws.
