LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
BITES
Madelynne Boykin is Lead Photographer at Bites And Bevs Media. She was kind enough to answer a few questions about herself and her industry.
SFL: WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND? WHERE ARE YOU FROM? HOW DID YOU GET TO ATLANTA? I am from Houston, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, as my parents are separated so I spent half my life in both. I majored in Sports PR and moved to Atlanta from Houston to work for the Braves. I was also a social media intern and a front desk associate at the W Hotel Downtown. I was a hard worker trying to find what made me happy. I found my way into hospitality, a field I didn’t know I loved and that eventually led me down the path of food and beverage.
AND
SFL: HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN FOOD PHOTOGRAPHY? Photography has always been a love of mine but I never thought I could make a career from it so it remained a hobby for years. I got into food photography because I have always loved the art of plating and the versatility of food. I just had to capture the textures, the colors, the fluidity and the beautiful art it creates on a plate. I would go to restaurants I couldn’t afford and ask for the prettiest dish on the menu, whether I ate it or not. I would practice and post and repeat until a restaurant asked me to shoot their menu. I thought to myself, “I can’t mess around. I really have to learn how to edit like a pro and upgrade my equipment.” I don’t half do anything, I’m a perfectionist and I kept getting better. I took the leap of faith right before Covid. Unfortunately, I lost all my clients on the day the world shut down. I’m blessed to be here today with more clients than I can handle alone so now I have a solid team.

SFL: WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? My goal is to introduce food photography and food styling to more young people especially of color and especially women. There aren’t enough of us in this industry. I want to offer classes and visit more schools on their career days and maybe one day teach this in college. I have big dreams for Bites and Bevs.
SFL: CAN YOU TELL US SOMETHING YOU LOVE ABOUT ATLANTA? I absolutely love the culture! There is no city like Atlanta. I love my hometown of Houston, don’t get me wrong but I’ve managed to make Atlanta my own. This is such an entrepreneurial spirit–filled city with people of color succeeding. Women
are at the forefront of so much here. This city was made for people like me!
SFL: DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST GETTING STARTED, IN A CREATIVE FIELD OR JUST IN GENERAL? Think outside of the box. Hone in on one or maybe two aspects you love about it and go out of your way to take risks, and make sacrifices to perfect that skill. I promise it will pay off. I focus on food and beverage and sometimes product. I don’t shoot architecture, models, or landscapes; I focus on what I excel at and now I’m able to charge what I am worth. For more on Madelynne and food photography, please visit BitesandBevsMedia.com.

Serving up some good news! While other prices have risen, GreyStone Power is offering a double helping of savings for members:
$12 million in capital credits is coming to members this fall. This money back is tangible evidence of members’ ownership of their electric cooperative. And those served by GreyStone Power are already enjoying rates that are more than 21% lower than Georgia Power’s.* These are just a couple of the benefits of being served by a not-for-profit electric cooperative.
Money back. Safe, reliable electricity. That’s definitely good news. * According to the 2022 summer rate survey by the Georgia Public Service Commission. Based on the average residential use of 1,500 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month.

NAPPY ROOTS’ ATLANTUCKY BREWERY CAN’T BE STOPPED Ready to Serve in Castleberry Hill! 24
LOCA LLY SOU R CE D | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
It was a day of relief for fans of Grammy-nominated rap group Nappy Roots during a press conference at their newly opened brewery, Atlantucky, in Atlanta, Georgia’s Castleberry Hill district. Nappy Roots recently made headlines when an incident threatened the life of brewery co-owner and beloved group member, Melvin Adams, aka Fish Scales. Now recovering from being shot in the calf during his escape, Scales believes the robbery was a random event and says he is ready to get back to work sooner rather than later. “We love Castleberry Hill!” Scales said. “This is one of the reasons that I am stressing to get back here so quick. My team and the people in this neighborhood have been so supportive. We want to let it be known that this is a great neighborhood and want this behind us so we can get back to working on all of the good stuff that is going on here.” Beginning as homebrewers, Nappy’s Scales and William Hughes, aka Skinny DeVille, have been involved in the craft beer industry, including numerous compilations with breweries nationwide, for the past five years leading up to the official opening of Atlantucky. The 6,000-square-foot, fully operational brewery doubles as an event facility complete with a stage recently serving as a platform for Georgia governor hopeful Stacey Abrams unveiling her economic plan, plus the National Hip Hop Museum’s Grand Induction Ceremony in August. And with their spacious brewery just steps away from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlantucky welcomes a steady stream of visitors enjoying brews on tap, including the well-balanced Mile High Pale Ale, light-bodied Castleberry Pils Lager, Chesapeake Bae Fruit Beer, and Peaches + Queens Peach Cobbler Ale brewed in collaboration with their female co-workers, to name a few. The band is proud that Atlantucky plays such an integral role in the Black craft beer community and aims to bring the focus back on their power to help advance those interested in learning the elements of brewing and starting a business. “I spoke to Mayor Andre Dickens the morning that [the robbery] happened, and he assured me that they will catch these guys and do whatever he can do,” DeVille said during the press conference. “That’s when I brought up creating a program to teach people of color how to brew and create jobs.” Besides crafting beers, Atlantucky’s diverse and talented staff manage the event space, assist with brewing, serve patrons, and collaborate with local Black-owned food vendors who host regular pop-ups at the brewery. “I just want to turn this into something positive. We are doing so many great things,” says Scales. Speaking the truth, Scales and his Atlantucky team continue to receive tremendous support from Atlanta and fans worldwide who continue lining up to enjoy their beers, events, and Nappy Roots’ mission for racial equity in the beer industry. Atlantucky Brewery is located at 170 Northside Drive SW, in Atlanta, Georgia 30313. Find out about their upcoming events on Instagram @Atlantucky or visit Atlantucky.com.

Let's Have a Fall
Soiree!
28
H OT SP OT | EV ENT PL AN NI NG + S E RVI CE S
As the end of the season approaches, we can prepare for the autumn and winter season festivities by hosting soirees. A soiree is an evening dinner party that is usually hosted in one’s home. Soirees are a great way to entertain and make your guests feel welcomed. Finding the time to entertain can be a challenge, but the time spent with family and friends is the most precious of all. Preparing for your soiree can be as simple or as intricate as you would like. The simplest menu for a soiree can be a charcuterie board paired with wine. Charcuterie boards are creative ways to incorporate all guest palettes. Serve meat, veggies, cheese, breads, fruits and nuts paired with wines such as cabernet sauvignon, prosecco and riesling. The wine options can be determined by the culinary choices you’ve made for your board. If you love a great party, a themed soiree is a fun option. A masquerade soiree is a great theme for a fall event. The evenings are cooler. The first step will be coming up with your guest list and then sending out invites to allow your guests time to find the perfect mask for the evening. Next step is to plan the wonderful menu, followed by decor, and entertainment. Give yourself the necessary time to plan in order to minimize stress. When choosing your decor for a masquerade soiree, you can get really creative. Make it an elegant affair by adding a classic chandelier or a candelabra. A “Great Gatsby” dress code will add instant sparkle to your party. But if your budget isn’t chandelier-level, there’s a simpler way to add some shine. Fill your centerpieces with confetti and go for gold cutlery (even if it’s just plasticware). Little touches like these will set a glam tone without breaking the bank. If you’re having a black-tie affair, an elegant three-course meal would go well with this theme. Provide champagne on ice and sparkling apple cider for those who do not drink. Enjoy!

TAYLOR #SoFu's Own in His Own Words
How often do we listen to our fathers, the guys who make us mow the lawn, and are they right? My dad, a professor and jazz musician from Albany, Georgia, took a job at GSU and landed in #SoFu where he hatched his plan to get me to the A. He said, “Where the music industry goes, the film and television industry soon follow.” And in the 90s in #SoFu, the music industry was bumpin’. I was an aspiring filmmaker. I arrived in #SoFu to attend grad school and feeling determined to make it in the film business. My film clients came from #SoFu—OutKast and Speech, plus DJ Smurf and Raheem the Dream. I worked one of my first big jobs as a cameraman on OutKast’s first video with F. Gary Gray, “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.” Dare I say it? #SoFu created the Atlanta entertainment industry. I challenge anyone to say otherwise. Bring it! I’ll fight you in the parking lot! The #SoFu vibe carried me to an MTV music video nomination, an Emmy, and numerous awards. To this day, I work with DJ Smurf’s nephew, David Crooms, at their #SoFu studio. #SoFu launched my award-winning company, Tomorrow Pictures, and the careers of many South Fulton kids who have worked with us over the years. My film mentors, super production expert Bolagi Bailey and location whiz Al Cooper, are from South Fulton. Their AJC cover article in 1989 marks the beginning of the movement, and I idolized them before they knew me. I enjoy working with up-and-comers and amazing #SoFubased talent. #SoFu continues to grow by leaps and bounds on the investments of Tyler Perry, Netflix, and others. Thanks Dad. You knew what you were talking about, but don’t get it twisted. I always hated cutting the grass.
