Community Inspired by Love When considering the things that cause me joy, I find that there are not many things that make the list but there are many people, organizations, and groups that do. Like you, I too appreciate the finer things in life; a tuned and smooth-running vehicle that makes getting from point A to point B a delight or a beautifully hand-crafted piece of furniture that not only looks good but feels luxurious. How about that cup of coffee, carefully crafted in a real mug and topped with a foam design the barista made so effortlessly? What I find even better though is learning a bit about the people behind those “things” we all enjoy. The craftsman who makes the furniture, shaping it into something we’ll want to use, the artist who first imagines and then creates using all the necessary colors and texture, or the chef who can taste the dish even before it has finished cooking, adding just the right seasoning to make the flavor pop. In the pages that follow, you’ll get to meet some of the imaginative people who, because of their passion and love for our community create items, tastes, and most importantly, the experiences that enhance living in Snohomish. Growing up, Chef Victoria Balas explored ethnic cuisine on many levels with her parents through diverse dining experiences. At nineteen, she married into a family with a strong Hungarian heritage and fell in love with her new family’s traditions and dishes. Then, through her work with a world relief organization, Balas experienced what she calls a culinary revival. “I traveled and met people from many countries, gained friendships, and learned their cultures,” said Balas. “I was so privileged to be a part of their hospitality, all the while watching and learning." Balas began sharing her passion for ethnic cuisine through her blog, Culinary Immigration, and by passing along techniques and traditions to her own family. In 2016, with encouragement from her daughter, Balas transformed her passion for sharing ethnic food and cultures into teaching culinary classes. “Everything was born through my desire to discover ethnic foods, how to make them, and how to teach my family and others how to make the dishes,” she said. “I started off with foods from my family, like Hungarian food, Southern food, and Irish American food, but quickly found out that people are eager to learn about food from other cultures as well.” The school’s name, Culinary Immigration, reflects how Balas sees the creation and development of the American culinary palette. “My family, my husband's family, and my son-in-law's family are all immigrants,” said Balas. “The way I see it is that American food is not simply American food… it's the world's food because it has been brought here by the immigrant. My Iranian and Egyptian friends don't change their way of cooking, they continue with their way of cooking. It's so wonderful to share in that passion they have for their food and for their families. They are so close-knit and I want to emulate that closeness because I’m so privileged to be a part of it.” With a vast repertoire of ethnic culinary experiences, Balas offers a wide range of cooking classes with includes Greek, Russian, Mexican, Chinese,

Indian, Hungarian, Middle Eastern, Thai, and Italian cuisines… just to name a few. Each class showcases a different cuisine and students who take a series of classes take a culinary trip around the world. Students get hands-on experience during cooking classes by making all food from scratch, not simply watching it being made, and using the traditional techniques associated with each culture. “When I pick ethnic foods, I try to keep things very common and choose dishes that are well known,” she shared. “It doesn't matter what level you're at, because when you come to learn ethnic foods, you're starting on the same plane. Not every culture cooks the same way, so you're learning a new technique when you come to class. Students learn to make Italian pasta by hand, getting their hands into the flour and egg mixture, kneading it, and rolling it out with an Italian matterello rolling pin. I also teach how to cook to retain flavors and nutrients in the dishes and how to cut vegetables so everything cooks uniformly.” The variety of cooking techniques keeps classes exciting and engaging for everyone. An important aspect of Balas’ culinary classes is a desire to connect people and build friendships through the shared experience of cooking and eating together. “I started the school because I wanted to share not only the foods from these cultures, but their commitment to their family and friends. I keep classes small so that people can get to know one another,” she explained. “We sit down at a table and we eat what we prepared together and it's so interesting to see community being built around that table.” In addition to public classes, which are open to eight students at a time, Balas offers private sessions that are perfect for a group of friends or family, corporate team building, or a couple who enjoy cooking together. “Private classes are very popular and fun,” said Balas. “Classes can include up to 12 people, and they can choose their cuisine for the session.” Classes, which are for adults only, usually last two and a half hours, including enjoying the meal.

Sharing her passion for ethnic culinary delights also includes serving as a personal chef and catering private dinners for two to twelve people. She works with the host to develop a customized menu full of fresh ingredients and creative flavors, then travels to the dinner site to prepare and serve the meal. For the Love of Community ONE COUPLE’S ANSWER TO BUILDING COMMUNITY

When Erin and Bill Webster arrived in Snohomish in 2019, they instantly felt that they had found home. When asked the question, “What brought you to Snohomish?” Bill will tell you, “We were destined to arrive here. We made an offer on a house on a Friday, they accepted on Monday. It was the only house we made an offer on, and we were under contract by Tuesday, it was serendipitous.” 2020 and the pandemic offered new opportunities for the couple to give back to community. They began to deliver food to those who could not get out of their homes. In 2023 when they were asked to take over Kla Ha Ya Days, they felt there were areas that they could make the event feel more community centric while attracting the 20,000 attendees who visit the festivities. They went to work asking their favorite question, “What does Snohomish need?” A shuttle service to relieve parking and to shuttle attendees from a location with plenty of parking down to First Street where most visitors are drawn to events, restaurants, and shops. They began by looking for sponsors and applied for a small grant. With the money they were able to raise, they purchased a 1992 Ford F350 20-passenger shuttle bus with 278,000 miles on it, the only drawback was that it was in Cle Elum. Bill’s response, “Well, this is exactly what we are looking for, we don’t want to spend $50,000 on something that we are not sure if we need or if the community will find useful. So, this is perfect if it makes it home it is meant to be, and if it doesn’t, we will just have another adventure in the books and we will figure it out.”

Thankfully the bus made it home, and the first event that they used it for was the Snohomish Block Party in August where they carried over 200 passengers to and from and the response was overwhelmingly positive. They then continued to shuttle for other events throughout the summer and early fall. At this point Bill and Erin had been running a shuttle for free, to get the word out and any tips have been donated to the local food banks. Unfortunately, in October, while shuttling for the Lake Stevens Farmers Market the bus was in an accident that totaled the vehicle, the catch was that Bill had given his word that the shuttle service would be available for the harvest festival at the end of the month in Snohomish, so as they went about wrestling with the insurance company the Snohomish community rose up and started a GoFundMe to raise the needed money to replace the bus. Between the fundraiser and the Websters “cobbling the rest of the funds together,” they now are the proud owners of a 2014 Ford F350 14-passenger Shuttle bus that runs on propane. What does the future look like for this community enterprise? “We would love to have a second bus in the future so that the wait times can be shorter for riders. Right now, we cooperate with local schools as pick up and drop off areas, which is again wonderful to continue to build community. We also hope to hire a driver, so that Erin or I are not the ones that are always driving for events, all these things will just allow us to do more.” In addition, they are hoping to gain some sponsors for this endeavor who would like to advertise on the bus so that the shuttle can remain free to its riders.

Bill and Erin are still figuring out what this will look like but are hopeful that as the word gets out, there is an option in the area the community will be embraced, and parking will no longer be a deterrent for visitors to explore and discover the treasure that is our beautiful community. What began on the big island of Hawaii with making leis for tourists and locals has grown into a full-service, all-occasion floral boutique and decor shop located in historic downtown Snohomish. Here, Candice and her team provide personalized service and guide customers to choose the best arrangement for the recipient. “We're the local flower shop creating custom florals with daily deliveries seven days a week and we specialize in weddings, event florals, floral workshops and local community projects,” shared Candice. “We hand make customized arrangements based on the preferences of the person receiving the flowers, especially when it comes to colors and mood.”

From celebrating birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, and holidays like Valentine’s Day to comforting a family during a time of loss, she ensures that each floral arrangement comes with a personal and caring touch. “I've navigated through a lot in my life and had to figure out a lot on my own,” she shared. “So, it comes naturally for me to listen to people’s stories, become invested in their situations, and show compassion through being here for them.” For Candice, designing and building custom florals on a daily basis is deeply fulfilling, and that enthusiasm shines through her products. “I love creating. There are so many inspiring people in the world and the ideas are endless. Creating is also the way I get through things too,” she explained. “I don't have a therapist; I have flowers and I feel so blessed that a big part of my day is being creative. I love how I get to use my creative energy to bring joy to people every day.”

In addition to daily creations in the shop, Candice and her team provide custom florals and décor for over two hundred weddings and special events each year. “We want to capture their vision for the event,” she said. “We schedule a consultation to get to know them and their personality. Then, we talk through their inspiration - whether it comes from Pinterest boards or photos or simply something special they want to express on their special day.” Connecting with and staying involved in local community projects is important to Candice. “We enjoy being active in the community and we seem to gravitate towards causes that support first responders,” she said. “We've been a part

of Hopes for Heroes for eight years, where we provide all the floral for events that raise money to give back to first responders. We also support Four Season Fighters and other groups. Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places.
