Smyrna’s Studio 23 empowers diverse creatives, from novices to seasoned painters and beyond

Art has the power to transform lives, and no one knows this better than Amberly Hood. In 2019, she founded Studio 23 Art Studio in Smyrna with a mission that goes far beyond teaching people how to hold a paintbrush. From the outset, Amberly envisioned a space where creativity could flourish for everyone, regardless of age, skill level, or ability.
Amberly’s vision was to provide instruction, teach skills and techniques, and instill confidence in students to apply their learning independently. This approach distinguishes Studio 23 from typical paint-and-sip venues. “There are so many places that will just show you how to paint but not teach the skills so that you can continue to work on your own,” she notes.
Since its inception, Studio 23 has evolved significantly. What began as fine art classes for children has expanded into a diverse array of programs, including animation and fiber arts. Evening adult classes now cater to both beginners and advanced artists, reflecting Amberly’s commitment to serving the entire community.
A standout feature of Studio 23 is its dedication to inclusivity. Drawing from her experience teaching at Jacob’s Ladder, a school for children with neurological challenges, Amberly introduced Neurodevelopmental Art classes. These sessions cater
to individuals with moderate to severe disabilities, addressing a crucial gap in artistic education. The classes have led to improvements in students’ fine motor skills, confidence, and social abilities.
Success stories from these classes are heartwarming. Amberly proudly mentions two students, Sammie and Jack, who will be having a duo art show at the San Francisco Coffee Shop in September. Such achievements underscore the studio’s impact on its students’ lives.
Amberly’s teaching philosophy is both inclusive and adaptive. “We approach each group differently where we teach the class as a whole but still provide individual support where needed,” she explains. “We like to meet students where they’re at while still hitting that challenge point.” This personalized approach ensures that every student receives the guidance they need to grow artistically.
The impact of Studio 23 extends beyond individual skill development. Amberly beams as she recounts the friendships forged within the studio’s walls, highlighting its role as both an artistic haven and a social hub.
For Amberly, the most rewarding moments come from witnessing personal growth. She reflects on the joy of seeing people become confident not only in their artistic abilities but in themselves overall. These transformations speak to the power of art as a tool for self-discovery and personal development.
Looking to the future, Amberly envisions Studio 23 continuing to grow its offerings. “Our goal is to continue to be a space for art and community in Smyrna,” she states. Her ultimate goal is for the studio to become a platform where artists can share their skills and talents with the public, further enriching Smyrna’s cultural landscape.
As Studio 23 paints a brighter future for its community, it stands as a testament to the transformative power of inclusive art education. In Amberly’s colorful world, every brushstroke is an opportunity for growth, connection, and self-discovery. Through her vision and dedication, Studio 23 has become more than just an art studio – it’s a canvas where lives are changed, friendships are formed, and creativity knows no bounds.

Step into a 70s-inspired speakeasy above Zucca’s Pizzeria, where vinyl-covered ceilings, unique cocktails, and eclectic decor transport you to a bygone era.

Step into a 70s-inspired speakeasy above Zucca’s Pizzeria, where vinyl-covered ceilings, unique cocktails, and eclectic decor transport you to a bygone era.
Music is the first thing you’ll hear after stepping behind the curtain and ascending to Smyrna’s newest cocktail lounge: Propaganda. The vinyl-covered ceiling and retro design have transformed the upstairs of Zucca’s Pizzeria into a 1970s-inspired speakeasy offering unique cocktails and a one-of-a-kind experience with its outgoing staff.
The soundtrack for each night ranges from Motown to classic rock as the DJ spins vinyl collected by Mr. Wattson, a co-owner and one of the designers of Propaganda. When he’s not picking the next song that will get others singing along, Wattson interacts with guests and takes Polaroids

to help them commemorate their evening. Though it was a strong collaboration between the two designers, he credits Heather Tazza as the “real genius” behind the space.
Tazza spent months transforming the small space into “an elevated basement” with an eclectic design and plenty to look at. Each piece of furniture was sourced from as far as Myrtle Beach and brought here to help bring the space to life. Even the ceiling is covered with the record jackets of albums that contributed to the soundtrack of the 70s. Details dominate the space, from the authentic propaganda plastered on the walls to Wattson’s original photography that decorates the bar.

“This is an art installation, and I want [guests] to be a part of it,” Tazza said. Propaganda strongly encourages guests to dress eccentrically and “think for yourself” while being in this welcoming space.
Since opening at the end of May, Propaganda has expanded its staff to include a team of mixologists who work at the bar and behind the scenes to create seasonal cocktails for their changing menu. Right now, guests can try twists on classic cocktails, such as the Bohemian Rhapsody (a disco lemonade), the Warhol (a pomegranate martini), or see if the Pop Rocks in their house cocktail (the Propaganda) will make their stomachs explode, which was a common myth in the 70s.
Tazza plans to continue bringing a variety of weekly events to Propaganda, ranging from tarot card readings to Latin Sundays every other week. Local artists can play in the Performance Parlor on Saturdays and have a turn at the DJ table during Sonic Sessions held on Wednesdays. Outside of events, Propaganda is open for drinking and dancing Wednesday-Saturday from 7 p.m.-1 a.m. and Sundays from 3-10 p.m.

“THIS IS AN ART INSTALLATION, AND I WANT GUESTS TO BE A PART OF IT.”

Since 2015, Smyrna Arts Council has worked to create and sustain a thriving Arts scene.
Few things enrich the quality of life in a community as effectively as a robust Arts scene. Visual arts can reflect our community pride while performing arts gather us together to share common experiences. Art expresses emotion, promotes empathy, and is a conduit for self-expression and an appreciation for what we find beautiful in the world around us. And don’t forget: the Arts are also good for business – driving tourism, strengthening brands, and stimulating innovation. Everyone benefits in a community with unique, well-supported Arts integration.
For nearly a decade, Smyrna Arts Council has been leading the effort to create and sustain a thriving Arts scene for Smyrna. “Art is an integral part of human culture and identity, and it is the heartbeat of a city like Smyrna,” says Board President Vanya Foote. “Art helps to promote a sense of place for our citizens.”
“The voice of the artist is often unheard,” says Jason Walesh, artist and owner of Glenn’s Café in Mableton. “Smyrna Arts Council listens to the artists in their community and affords them the opportunity to speak to a larger audience.”
Here are some of the many ways Smyrna Arts Council is at work! There is so much potential still to be realized - and the Council is ready to partner with local artists, philanthropists, businesses, and elected leaders to make it happen.

Smyrna Arts Council is a grassroots 501(c)3 nonprofit managed by an all-volunteer Board and supported by donations. Come to their first-ever fundraising gala at the Reed House Saturday, September 14th to support the Arts while celebrating them!
Smyrna Arts Council grew out of the city-sponsored Visioning Process of 2015, led by then-Councilperson Melleny Pritchett, Dr. Bill Marchione, and Mayor Max Bacon, to cultivate and promote arts and culture for Smyrna. Now an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit, the Council provides a strong, independent voice for Smyrna’s cultural community. Members frequently serve on municipal task forces, conduct candidate interviews, and attend regional conferences.

Smyrna Arts Council is maintaining a monthly presence at the 2024 Smyrna Market. Stop by their booth to shop local artists, learn about events, find opportunities to support, and paint treasures to hide around town with their popular #SmyrnaGARocks initiative. The Council also sponsors the Traveling Fence Gallery’s annual Smyrna residency and has worked with our local students through gallery shows and scholarships.

The Community Art Exhibits in Smyrna City Hall and the Community Center are an opportunity for local artists to display their work to be enjoyed for free by the community. Exhibits change quarterly and the art displayed has run the gamut of mediums, styles, and subject matter. Artists interested in being considered for future exhibits should visit smyrnaartscouncil.com and Apply as an Artist.

Live art events produced by Smyrna Arts Council have included a jazz concert under the stars, turning the Old Smyrna Firehouse into a theatre for a one-woman show, bringing Dad’s Garage to the Community Center, commissioning and staging The Secrets of Smyrna walking historical theatre tour, and sponsoring Art Live! – live painting, with the finished piece won by an attendee - at Vineyard Wine Market.

Discover how color, texture, and innovative techniques are transforming homes nationwide.

As we embrace the art of self-expression in our homes, this year’s interior paint trends are all about letting your personality shine through. At Three Brushes Painting, we’re seeing a vibrant palette of choices that reflect the diverse tastes and lifestyles of our clients.

Leading the charge are three distinct color trends. Warm, creamy whites continue to be a popular choice, offering a timeless backdrop that brightens spaces while maintaining a cozy atmosphere. These versatile shades provide the perfect canvas for showcasing artwork or colorful furnishings. For those seeking drama, bold vintage hues like deep blues, greens, and even blacks are making a strong statement. These rich tones add depth and sophistication to any room, creating a sense of luxury and intimacy. On the other end of the spectrum, earthy tones such as sage, mauve, and greige are bringing a sense of serenity to interiors, reflecting our growing desire for spaces that feel grounded and connected to nature.
The concept of accent walls has evolved dramatically. While we still see pops of contrasting color, many homeowners are now opting for sophisticated trim designs to create visual interest. “Color drenching” – where walls and trim share the same hue and sheen – is gaining traction, allowing the accent to be in the architectural details rather than color contrast. Doors and ceilings are also becoming canvases for bold color statements, especially in spaces with neutral walls.
When it comes to finishes, flat and matte are reigning supreme in most rooms, save for
moisture-prone areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Even in high-traffic zones like nurseries and playrooms, advances in paint technology allow for durable, easy-to-clean flat finishes. For a touch of glamour, high-gloss ceilings in powder rooms and kitchens are turning heads, especially when paired with daring color choices.
Texture is making a comeback in a big way. Techniques like rag rolling, sponging, faux marbling, and interior limewashing are adding depth and character to walls. These methods pair beautifully with both bold and earthy color palettes, creating unique, highend looks that are truly one-of-a-kind.
The rise of home offices has also influenced paint choices. While some opt for bright, clean spaces with warm whites or calming earth tones like sage and terracotta to foster focus and creativity, others are embracing rich, sophisticated hues like navy and forest green to create a more stately work environment.
As we continue to reimagine our living spaces, paint remains one of the most powerful tools for personal expression. Whether you’re drawn to serene neutrals or bold statements, today’s trends offer endless possibilities to make your home uniquely yours. With a little imagination and the right techniques, your walls can become a true reflection of your personality and style.

TRANSFORM YOUR HOME INTO A BUYER’S DREAM!

Make a great first impression. No time or budget to do the entire house? Focus on the entryway and living room. Consider a statement chandelier, a cozy entryway, or a pop of color on the front door.

Clarify each room’s purpose by dividing large rooms into smaller seating areas. Have a space that’s no man’s land? Use furniture and household items you have on hand and give it a purpose (office, craft room, guest bedroom, etc.).
A fresh coat of neutral paint throughout the interior is an inexpensive update that will really brighten the space providing a nice canvas for the perfect furniture placement.
Consider the scale, texture, and tone of each room. Everything should “fit” and be visually appealing. Translation? Get rid of any unnecessary furniture that’s cluttering up the room.

Give attention to your great outdoors. Curb appeal — it’s a thing. Buyers will love seeing new landscaping, clean walkways, and bright lighting.

Local designer Greg DeLoia reveals how to transform your space into a sanctuary that reflects your lifestyle, values, and personality.
As we embrace a new era of living, our homes are transforming to reflect our changing needs and values. Greg DeLoia of Sanctuary Spaces, a local interior design firm, shares his insights on the latest trends shaping our living spaces.
Biophilic design is taking center stage, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor living. Homeowners are incorporating natural elements through upholstery, wallpaper, and an abundance of plants, both real and artificial. Larger windows are becoming popular, inviting more natural light and outdoor views into our sanctuaries.
The shift towards remote work has prompted creative solutions for home offices. Greg emphasizes the importance of strategic placement and flexibility in workspace design. ‘We’ve been challenged to create multiple workspaces within homes, often in unexpected places. We’ve transformed guest rooms, basements, and even closets into functional workspaces allowing for a healthier separation between work and personal life.

Sustainability is no longer just a buzzword but a driving force in modern home design. Clients are increasingly focused on durability and eco-friendly materials. This demand has spurred innovation in the industry, with manufacturers developing more sustainable and transparent products.
Color palettes are evolving too. While neutrals remain strong, earth-inspired tones and moody, bold hues are gaining traction. Natural materials like wood, jute, and stone (both real and faux) are reigning supreme in material selections.
Looking ahead, Greg predicts a rise in individualistic design. “Clients are moving away from strictly following trends and instead creating spaces that truly reflect their personalities.” This often includes incorporating antiques into modern interiors, which he finds adds wonderful character and depth.
In a world where our homes serve more purposes than ever before, Sanctuary Spaces is helping clients create true sanctuaries, “At the end of the day, my goal is always to design spaces that allow my clients to be their best selves. Our goal is not to simply follow trends, but to create functional spaces for our clients that are uniquely their own.”

ENGLISHMAN’S FINE FURNISHINGS BLENDS ANTIQUE TREASURES WITH BESPOKE REPRODUCTIONS, OFFERING TIMELESS QUALITY AND PERSONALIZED SERVICE FOR OVER 30 YEARS.
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALANA WICKHAM
Step into Englishman’s Fine Furnishings, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported across the Atlantic. This local gem, nestled in our community for over three decades, is more than just a furniture store – it’s a gateway to European elegance and craftsmanship.
Anita Vreeland, one of the proprietors, shared the fascinating evolution of Englishman’s. “When we started, we carried almost exclusively antiques from England and the
European continent,” she reminisces. Today, their 20,000 square foot showroom is a delightful mix of vintage treasures and bespoke reproductions, all curated with an expert eye. But what truly sets Englishman’s apart is their dedication to quality and customization. “Over 50% of our business is custom orders,” Anita reveals. She recounts a touching story of a 9/11 survivor who chose Englishman’s to furnish his new office in Atlanta. “Even though it wasn’t one of our

bigger or fancier custom orders, it still sticks with me today,” she says, highlighting how each piece they create holds a special significance.
In an age of disposable furniture, Englishman’s stands as a testament of durability and timeless style. Their reproductions are crafted in England using traditional methods passed down through generations. “Furnishing your home is an investment,” Anita emphasizes. “The quality of the furniture we carry can be seen and felt. It’s going to last and be able to be passed on to your children.”
What’s most charming about Englishman’s is its family-like atmosphere. The staff, many of whom have been there for over 20 years, treat customers like neighbors (because often, they are!). “We want our customers to feel like part of the Englishman’s family too,” Anita says warmly. Don’t expect pushy salespeople here. Instead, you’re invited to wander, to sit, to feel at home among the exquisite pieces. “We want your shopping experience to be a pleasant one with no pressure,” Anita assures. “We feel once you see our furniture in person, you’ll see why we all love it so much.”
Whether you’re in the market for a statement dining table, a cozy leather armchair, or a unique vintage find, Englishman’s Fine Furnishings offers a shopping experience as rich and inviting as their wares. It’s not just about buying furniture – it’s about bringing a piece of history, craftsmanship, and European charm into your home.

Broadway hit brings laughter, music, and nostalgia to Atlanta
The energy was electric as the Fox Theatre filled with people of all ages for the opening night of Funny Girl. The three-hour-long show captivated the audience with outstanding vocals, abundant tap dancing, interactions with the crowd (cheering is strongly encouraged), and iconic numbers like the classic “Don’t Rain On My Parade.”
Funny Girl shares the story of a young woman named Fanny Brice who is determined to gain fame in New York City. Her character is “uniquely individual” compared to the rest of the cast as she cracks jokes for the crowd and dances clumsily. When Fanny meets Nicky Arnstein, her life begins to take a turn in more ways than one.

Don’t forget about dinner before the show! There are many restaurants to choose from within walking distance of the Fox Theatre. Ecco provides a “theatre menu” that offers quick bites and classic cocktails for before the show. The Publik Draft House, located immediately next to the Fox Theatre, serves American food along with an expansive bar menu.
If you can’t make it to Funny Girl, there’s always another show coming up at the Fox. Coca-Cola is hosting their Summer Film Festival at the end of August, showing movie classics like West Side Story and Casablanca. The next Broadway in Atlanta musical making its stop at the Fox Theatre will be The Lion King, running October 2-20, 2024.
