LIFESTYLE LETTER
A Little Local Flavor . . .
October 2026 PUBLISHER
Burke Scott | burke.scott@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R
Dear Readers, October has a way of making everything feel just a little more fun. The mornings are cooler, the weekends fill up quickly, patios become appealing again and suddenly there are a dozen reasons to head out the door — a football game, a fall festival, dinner somewhere new or just an excuse to meet a friend for a glass of wine. It’s a good month to live around here. And this issue captures so much of what makes fall in Smyrna and Vinings worth enjoying. There are, of course, plenty of delicious things in these pages. We’re learning about wine without any of the stuffiness, discovering some terrific new places to eat, building beautiful grazing boards, talking beer and bread and even bringing home a little taste of Maui. We’ve also got fall pours worth trying, picnic spots worth packing a basket for and plenty of inspiration for getting out and enjoying the season. But some of my favorite stories this month aren’t really about the food at all. They’re about the people behind it. They’re about someone taking an idea and building something special. About neighbors showing up for a local school. About traditions that keep people coming back year after year. About school spirit, community pride and people finding creative ways to make our little corner of the world a little more interesting, generous and fun. That’s the part I never get tired of. After putting together this magazine month after month, I still find myself surprised by how many stories there are to tell right here in our own backyard. Just when I think I know Smyrna pretty well, somebody introduces me to a person I haven’t met, a business I haven’t visited or a story I can’t believe I didn’t already know. I hope this issue does a little of that for you, too. Try someplace new. Order something different. Pack a picnic. Raise a glass. Go to the festival. Cheer for the Spartans. And when you stumble across something wonderful along the way, tell somebody else about it. That’s how the good stuff around here keeps growing. Happy fall, Smyrna Vinings!

Nourishing Our Community! Smyrna First United Methodist Church is a place where nourishment happens in every form - around tables, in community, and within the sacred rhythms of faith. Each week, our Wednesday Night Dinners bring families, friends, and neighbors together for a warm meal and genuine connection. In October, our Trunk-or-Treat hotdogs add a playful, joy‑filled touch as kids and adults alike share food, laughter, and the spirit of the season. But nourishment at Smyrna First goes deeper than what’s on the plate. Through Holy Communion, we gather at Christ’s table to remember grace that sustains us. And through meaningful spiritual milestones: baptisms, confirmations, and moments of blessing, we celebrate the ways God feeds our hearts and guides our journeys. And beyond these moments, we nourish our wider community through the Tillman House Resource Center, which offers food, support, and a compassionate helping hand to neighbors who need a lift. At SFUMC, food and faith come together to create a community where all are welcomed and truly nourished. If you are looking for a place to be nourished and belong, we invite you to give us a try. REAL MUSIC. REAL PEOPLE. REAL LOUD. The 1990’s were right about one thing: Nothing beats being there. We’re bullish on realism. On shaking hands. On amps humming in the room. On drums that hit your chest. On brass that cuts through Friday night football. In a world where you can’t trust what’s on your phone, we trust what’s in the room.

THE WINE WORLD,
Opened Up Chelsea Young is making serious wine education more accessible, approachable and connected in Smyrna.

Chelsea Young
Chances are, you’ve been to Smyrna Market Village more times than you can count. Maybe you’ve met friends for dinner, grabbed coffee, wandered through a festival or spent a Saturday afternoon soaking up the neighborhood energy that has made the Market Village one of Smyrna’s favorite gathering places. But tucked into that familiar setting — just upstairs from The Vineyard Wine Market — is something you may not even realize is there. The Oenophile Institute — affectionately known as OI — is devoted to wine and beverage education, welcoming industry professionals and curious beginners alike. And at the center of it is Chelsea Young. Chelsea grew up as what she describes as a “very studious AP student by day,” while spending nearly every other waking hour in a ballet studio. She eventually pursued dancing professionally, while bartending through her 20s to make ends meet. As her hospitality career progressed from dive bars to fine dining, a local sommelier introduced her to what she calls her first real “ah-ha” wine. Suddenly, wine offered an endless rabbit hole of history, geography, sociology and science — all wrapped up in something creative and sensory. “In hindsight, wine was the perfect collision of my two worlds: the scholar and the artist,” she says. Today, she teaches wine in a former ballet studio. “Pure kismet,” she calls it.
FROM WINE NERDS TO WINE SCHOOL
The Oenophile Institute began far less formally than its name might suggest. During the pandemic, about a dozen self-described wine nerds began gathering for blind tastings and certification study. Within a few years, that original group had grown into a group chat of more than 100 people. As interest grew, Chelsea partnered with Anthony Alvarez, owner of The Vineyard Wine Market in Smyrna Market Village. Anthony had a separate event space above The Vineyard, giving the fledgling institute a home while Chelsea continued working full time in wine distribution and completed WSET’s Level 4 Diploma and Educator Training Program. “It was a great way to get things going in the early days,” Chelsea says. The institute remains in that same upstairs space today, though Chelsea says it is now in the process of becoming independent. CONTINUED > OCTOB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . At the time, Atlanta had surprisingly few options for people seeking serious wine education. Certification programs were often expensive, exclusive or located outside the state. Today, OI offers everything from casual tastings to internationally recognized certifications, but Chelsea has worked deliberately to make sure serious education does not come with a side of intimidation. “Most wine experiences fall into one of two camps,” she says. “A fun tasting where you don’t really learn anything because it’s focused on sales, or a stuffy classroom where you’re afraid to ask a question. We live in the space between.” At OI, Chelsea insists, there are no dumb questions. “You don’t need any prior experience to walk through our door,” she says. “Just curiosity and a sense of adventure.”
PULL UP A CHAIR
You can see that philosophy in her classes. A restaurant server studying for a WSET certification may sit beside a couple tired of guessing at the wine shop, or a retiree finally exploring a longtime interest. “Beginners keep the pros honest and on their toes, and the pros keep the conversation deep but inviting,” she says. Wine has a long history of gatekeeping, and Chelsea’s own career has included wonderful mentors as well as moments when, as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry, she felt she had to prove she belonged in the room twice over. Those experiences helped shape the kind of room she wanted to create for everyone else.
OENOPHILE INSTITUTE Located above The Vineyard Wine Market in Smyrna Market Village, OI offers approachable wine and beverage education for everyone from curious beginners to industry professionals pursuing certifications. Classes range from casual tastings to internationally recognized programs, all with an emphasis on conversation, curiosity and zero intimidation. 1295 W Spring St., Suite 201 | Smyrna, GA 30080 (404) 558-1436 | oenophileinstitute.com | @oenophileinstitute

FINDING COMMUNITY IN SMYRNA
Chelsea says Smyrna Market Village has played an important role in what OI has become. Students come from across metro Atlanta, though many are local. They arrive for class, get to know one another, then head to dinner together, meet again at community events and, in some cases, even travel together. “That community is something you can’t manufacture,” Chelsea says. And perhaps that is the biggest misconception she would like to erase about wine: you don’t need to know everything before joining the conversation. Ask the sommelier. Talk to the person behind the counter. Admit that you have no idea what “Northern Rhône” means. “We love the questions,” Chelsea says. “Nobody gets into wine to keep secrets. We want to share and ‘nerd out.’”
WHAT’S NEXT
OI is expanding into beer education with Master Cicerone Jen Blair, bringing that same approachable education to beer. Its largest annual event, Sommlympics, is growing too. Beginning in 2027, it will serve as a fundraiser supporting scholarships for certification programs. But ask Chelsea what she is proudest of, and she doesn’t mention credentials or growth. She talks about the people in the room. “That was the dream from day one,” Chelsea says. “A place where nobody feels like wine isn’t ‘for them.’” So the next time you’re wandering through Smyrna Market Village, there may be an entire world upstairs that you’ve never thought to explore. And the only thing you need to bring with you is a little curiosity.

BUBBLES
Chelsea has one rule that works in every season: drink the bubbles. Champagne tops her fall list partly because, as she cheerfully points out, October is her birthday month — but she hardly needs an occasion. Effervescent, festive and endlessly food-friendly, bubbles can move easily from an afternoon gathering to dinner with friends. If you tend to save Champagne for holidays or major celebrations, Chelsea would happily encourage you to rethink that habit. Sometimes simply opening the bottle is reason enough to celebrate.
CHENIN BLANC
Think white wine belongs only to warm weather? Chelsea would like a word. Her fall pick is Chenin Blanc from France’s Loire Valley, whose baked-apple and honey notes bring an unmistakably autumnal feel to the glass. Its richer weight also makes it a bridge between crisp summer whites and the deeper reds many people reach for when temperatures drop. For anyone ready to put white wine away until spring, Chelsea’s advice is simple: give Loire Valley Chenin a chance to change your mind.
SYRAH
Chelsea readily admits she is a full-on Syrah fangirl, and fall is when she thinks the grape truly shines. With smoke, black pepper and dark fruit, Syrah feels right at home beside a fall barbecue or around a campfire. If your experience with Syrah has been limited to big, jammy versions, she suggests looking toward France’s Northern Rhône. The style can reveal a different side of the grape — savory, peppery and complex enough that Chelsea is confident she just might make you a convert.

SATURDAYS ARE Sweeter ON Mimosa A neighborhood bake shed brings homemade treats, new friendships and Saturday morning smiles to Williams Park ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY AUTUM BROWN
By 8:45 on a Saturday morning, there may already be a line forming on Mimosa Circle. Parents arrive with children. Neighbors chat while they wait. Somewhere inside the house, three kids may be peering through the windows in their pajamas, watching people gather around the little green bake shed their mom has rolled toward the sidewalk. Officially, it doesn’t open until 9. The neighbors, apparently, have learned not to risk it. Welcome to Saturdays on Mimosa, a cottage bakery that has quickly become one of Williams Park’s sweetest Saturday morning traditions. For Autum Brown, though, the story began long before there was a bake shed — and before her family ever called Mimosa Circle home. She had been baking for nearly 15 years when, in March 2026, she got the itch to start making cookies and other treats she could share with friends and neighbors. With three young children at home, a storefront or regular market schedule didn’t fit this season of life. A bake shed did. “The ease of opening my front door on Saturday mornings, while my kids watch through the living room windows, is what makes this work,” she says. The concept was originally called Saturday Sweets. Then Autum and her husband bought their home on Mimosa Circle in May and moved their family from Atlanta, where they had lived for six years, into Smyrna’s Williams Park neighborhood. With the move came a new name — Saturdays on Mimosa — and a quick introduction to their new community.

Autum had always imagined living in the kind of neighborhood where someone might send a group text saying, “Cake slices on the porch!” or “Who wants a banana bread? We have extras!” The bake shed, she says, has essentially made that dream come true. Most Saturdays, Autum stocks the self-serve shed before 9 a.m. Prices are clearly marked, cottage food labels are attached and customers can pay through Venmo or Cash App. She doesn’t take preorders, preferring to keep Saturday mornings easy and spontaneous. But spontaneous does not necessarily mean leisurely. CONTINUED >

On opening day, Autum walked outside to find nearly 30 people waiting 15 minutes before she was scheduled to begin. “I was hopeful, but I was still very surprised — and so nervous,” she remembers. Since then, there have been plenty of sellout Saturdays. The cinnamon rolls are usually the first to disappear, often within the first half hour. Old-fashioned donuts make occasional appearances and tend to vanish just as quickly. Iced brown butter oatmeal cookies have become another favorite. But ask Autum what has surprised her most and she doesn’t talk about sales. She talks about people. It’s the Instagram messages from someone saying they can’t wait to visit that weekend. It’s meeting somebody new and hearing, “Oh, you have the bake shed!” It’s children playing together while their parents linger in the driveway and talk. And then there is Autum’s own family, woven naturally into the whole thing. A stay-at-home mom and self-described night owl, Autum does much of her baking after the children are asleep. Her husband handles forgotten-ingredient grocery runs and helps stock the shed. She jokes that he officially “clocks in” each Saturday morning when it is time to move the stand toward the sidewalk. Their three children have embraced the ritual, too. Visitors might spot them waving from the living room window or playing outside on the rope swing in their pajamas, delighted that everyone has come to “Mom’s bake shed.” That may be what makes Saturdays on Mimosa feel like more than a place to pick up a cinnamon roll. It feels like the neighborhood Autum hoped to find when her family moved here. Now she hopes the bake shed becomes a yearround tradition, with seasonal flavors, holiday cookies and plenty more Saturday mornings spent talking in the driveway. Saturdays on Mimosa has given Autum a creative outlet. It has given Smyrna some very good reasons to arrive before 9. And somewhere along the way, it gave a new family exactly the kind of neighborhood welcome they had been hoping for.
Stop By Saturdays on Mimosa WHEN: Most Saturdays beginning at 9 a.m.
WHERE: Mimosa Circle in Smyrna’s Williams Park neighborhood
HOW IT WORKS: The bake shed is self-serve, with prices listed and payment available through Venmo or Cash App. Autum does not currently accept preorders, so arriving early is your best bet for the widest selection.
HOW LONG: Until sold out or sundown — whichever comes first.
WHAT YOU MIGHT FIND: Cinnamon rolls, cookies, occasional old-fashioned donuts and rotating seasonal treats.
STAY UPDATED: Follow @saturdaysonmimosa on Instagram for weekly menus, opening or closing updates and those all-important sellout notices.

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM
Toni & Julio Hewitt
40
H OST IN G T IP S | P RO FESSION AL SE RVICE S
For years, Toni Hewitt and her husband, Julio, talked about building something of their own. It was one of those conversations that lived comfortably in the future. Maybe one day. Maybe when the timing was right. Maybe when the right idea came along. In the meantime, Toni built a long career in financial technology, spending more than 25 years in the industry and nearly 19 of them with Chase. She and Julio married in 2010 and built a life together with their son, Jackson, filling their home with the things they loved—good food, good wine and friends gathered around the table. They hosted multi-course dinners, Toni created grazing tables for family Thanksgivings, and even their Chateau Elan wedding reflected that shared appreciation for food and hospitality. So when the couple began seriously exploring entrepreneurship in 2024, they knew they wanted something that felt like them. Finding it took a little while. They explored several franchise concepts before a sandwich concept brought them closer to the world they naturally gravitated toward. Then, almost by accident, Toni found Graze Craze while researching something else. And for the first time, the idea did not simply look good on paper. It felt familiar. “I’ve always loved charcuterie,” Toni says. “When I discovered there was an entire business built around something I genuinely enjoyed, I was immediately intrigued.” The timing was becoming important. Toni’s corporate life had grown increasingly demanding. The five-day-a-week commute to Buckhead was wearing on her. Stress was high. Rumors of layoffs circulated. Then, in October 2025, Toni was among those laid off from Chase. By then, she and Julio were already seriously considering Graze Craze.
What could have been a moment of uncertainty instead became a decision point. The thing they had talked about for years was no longer somewhere off in the future. It was time. Smyrna became part of that decision, too. Toni saw a community that felt both close-knit and energetic, where neighborhood and business life overlap. Families celebrate birthdays and graduations here. Companies gather teams and thank clients here. Schools, nonprofits and civic groups keep calendars full. For someone drawn to hospitality and community, it felt like the right place to begin. But more importantly, Toni did not want simply to plant a storefront in a good market. She wanted to know the people around it. That lesson became clearer once the doors opened. Like many first-time business owners, Toni admits she carried at least a little of the “build it and they will come” idea into entrepreneurship. Reality arrived quickly. Much of the work happens away from the counter—in conversations, community events and relationships formed one at a time. “It’s been much more work than I imagined,” she says, “but it’s also been one of the most rewarding parts of this experience.” That may be because relationship-building feels connected to the reason Graze Craze Cumberland appealed to her in the first place. At its best, food creates a reason to linger. A board arrives full and colorful, layered with meats and cheeses, fresh produce, breads, crackers and small bites tucked into every available space. People reach in, try something, pass something else across the table. Conversation moves with the food. Toni loves that. Her favorite item is the Classic, but what she most enjoys creating is a grazing table, where the arrangement itself becomes part of the occasion. CONTINUED >

“We didn’t want to simply open a business in Smyrna. We want to become part of Smyrna and genuinely know the community.”

H OST IN G T IP S | P RO FESSION AL SE RVICE S
Today, Graze Craze Cumberland extends that same idea across everything from individual and shareable boards and boxes to catering, gifting, grazing tables and hands-on workshops. There are heights and textures to play with. Color. Shape. Abundance. And then there is the moment the host sees it. “Before anyone takes the first bite, the presentation has already become part of the celebration,” Toni says. That reaction still gets her. Her advice for creating a spread at home is less about perfection than generosity. Choose a few things you genuinely love. Mix soft and firm cheeses, sweet and salty bites, crunch and color. Fill the empty spaces. Let it look abundant. Most of all, enjoy it. There is no single correct way to make a beautiful board. There may be no single correct way to build a new life, either. For Toni, this chapter arrived after decades in one industry, years of conversations with Julio and a layoff that might have closed one door but also removed the excuse to keep waiting on another. Now, success looks different. Yes, she hopes Graze Craze Cumberland grows. But when Toni talks about the future, she talks just as much about belonging. A few years from now, she wants to see a business people know and trust— one woven into the community around it. “We didn’t want to simply open a business in Smyrna,” she says. “We want to become part of Smyrna.” It is a fitting goal for a woman whose next chapter was built around gathering. After all, the best tables have never really been about what is on them. They are about who pulls up a chair.

SMYRNA’S GREG FEIST FINDS CREATIVE SATISFACTION IN HOMEBREWING, BAKING AND BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER.
There are people who follow recipes. And then there is Greg Feist. Greg comes from a family where cooking instructions were more likely to include “a little of this” and “until it’s ready” than carefully measured teaspoons and timers. His grandmother was a professional chef who rarely wrote anything down. His mother was feeding seven children three meals a day and didn’t exactly have time to stop and level off the flour. So Greg learned early that a recipe was really more of a suggestion. “I firmly believe that a recipe is a skeleton at best,” he says. “Like jazz, the best result in the kitchen is a combination of the notes you play and the ones you don’t.” That philosophy works beautifully for cooking. It becomes slightly more complicated when you decide to start brewing beer. Greg and his wife, Amy, have lived in Smyrna for eight years. They originally chose the area because it split the difference between his Midtown office and her job at Kennesaw State University. Then the pandemic arrived, Greg’s office went virtual and the commute that brought them here largely disappeared. Fortunately, they had already discovered they liked Smyrna enough to stay. The pandemic also revived an interest Greg had considered years earlier: homebrewing. Greg has always loved breweries, brewpubs and tasting rooms. When he and Amy travel, they make a point of trying the local beer — sometimes one brewery and, in places like Asheville, perhaps considerably more. “I don’t think you can truly know a place until you’ve tasted the local beer,” he says. Friends first encouraged Greg to try brewing in his 20s, certain his tendency to experiment in the kitchen would translate well to creating his own beers. CONTINUED >

Then he took a brewing class. There were measurements. Precision. Exactness. Greg reconsidered. Years later, pandemic-era beer options were limited, some unexpected voiceover income was burning a hole in his pocket and, as Greg puts it, his need for a little “exbeerimentation” won out. His first several batches were not particularly good. Oddly enough, that may be exactly why he kept going. Greg compares brewing to golf. You don’t play one round, realize you’re not Scottie Scheffler and immediately give away your clubs. You practice. Every batch became another chance to get better. The results have ranged, in Greg’s words, from great to “virtually undrinkable.” One of the great ones was an English Brown Ale he called Encyclopaedia Brown, which earned high praise from several judges from a regional homebrewing competition. Another favorite, East-West Connector, combined the hazy, tropical character of a New England IPA with the piney, resinous flavors Greg enjoys in West Coast IPAs. After 30 years as an advertising copywriter, creative director and occasional screenwriter, Greg admits that naming the beers is one of his favorite parts. His basement brewery has a name, too: The Hop Church Brewing, a fitting choice for a longtime “hophead.” But one of the best things coming out of Greg’s home brewery isn’t beer at all. It’s bread. A 10-gallon batch can use roughly 28 pounds of grain. Once the sugars have been extracted during brewing, those “spent grains” still have plenty of fiber, nutrition and flavor. And Greg hates wasting food. So he and Amy divide the grain into two-cup portions and freeze it. Their most recent batch produced 45 bags — enough, potentially, for nearly a year’s worth of homemade bread. They use it for whole-wheat loaves, pizza dough, soft pretzels, waffles, crackers, cookies and even dog biscuits. They don’t buy bread anymore. Greg toasts the grain, works it into the dough and even finishes the loaf in a 400-degree smoker for a hearth-baked quality. Friends seem particularly fond of his basic whole-wheat loaf. Greg, however, thinks the soft pretzels deserve more recognition. There have been other creative pursuits along the way — barbecue competitions, plenty of time at the smoker and restoring vintage Sunbeam Alpines. But whether Greg is brewing beer, baking bread or feeding friends, the making is only part of what he enjoys. The sharing may matter even more. “Food sustains us,” Greg says, “but I think its superpower is its ability to bring people together.” His circle of friends includes some very good cooks, and they gather regularly to break bread, try each other’s creations and talk about life, family and whatever may be coming next. Which may explain why Greg keeps experimenting, even when the occasional batch goes sideways. There will always be another beer to brew. Another loaf to bake. Another recipe to ignore. And, hopefully, another reason to gather around the table.

Spartan Spirit on Tap
CAMPBELL’S INAUGURAL SPARTAN SOIRÉE BROUGHT THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE AND SUPPORT THE FUTURE OF ATHLETICS. ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDON CARTER

Blue and white took over StillFire Brewing on August 29 — and for very good reason. The Campbell High School community had gathered for the inaugural Spartan Soirée, bringing Spartan families, friends, alumni and supporters together for a night that felt equal parts celebration, reunion and rally for the future of Campbell athletics. Hosted by the Spartan Athletic Association, the evening paired plenty of fun with a much bigger purpose: building an even stronger athletic experience for Campbell students.
StillFire got into the Spartan spirit, too, creating Spartan Blue, a special blue lager brewed just for the occasion. The can featured a custom label by Erin Machado, winner of the Spartan Brew label design contest. Add live music from Pushing Daisies, DJ Andre, local food favorites and plenty of blue-and-white pride, and the whole evening felt like one big Campbell celebration. For Spartan Athletic Association President Dr. Jamie Michael, the response was especially meaningful. CONTINUED >

“The Smyrna community and Spartan families are always ready to be there to support,” Jamie said. “We are so excited about the response we have gotten as we are just getting started.” Campbell High School Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Phillip Howard said reconnecting the school with the surrounding community has been one of his priorities since arriving on campus. The turnout, he said, showed that people see the work happening at Campbell — and want to be part of what comes next. Phillip describes Campbell as “a sleeping giant that is slowly waking up,” with plenty more ahead. And that may have been the best part of the night. Yes, there was music. There was food. There was Spartan Blue flowing. But underneath it all was something even better: a community showing up, cheering loudly and making it clear that Campbell athletics has plenty of people in its corner. If the inaugural Soirée proved anything, it’s that Spartan spirit is alive, well — and just getting warmed up.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE SPARTANS The Spartan Soirée may have been a celebration, but the Spartan Athletic Association has its sights set firmly on what comes next — and on creating an even stronger athletic experience for Campbell students.
FIRST UP The Association’s first planned investment is a new digital scoreboard and PA system that will serve 18 different Campbell athletic programs, giving student-athletes and fans an upgraded game-day experience across multiple sports.
BUILDING MOMENTUM The organization expects to have raised $100,000 by the end of October, helping move its larger vision for improved athletic facilities, stronger support for Spartan programs and a more memorable experience for everyone who comes out to cheer them on.
MORE TO COME The inaugural Soirée won’t be a one-and-done. It will return next year, and additional Spartan Athletic Association events are already planned throughout this school year as the organization continues building excitement and support across the community.

Smy r na G et s Spook y A longtime Halloween tradition brings costumes, candy and community fun to Market Village. Over time, the event grew. It moved outdoors, shifted to Friday evenings and welcomed older children into the fun. And then came 2020. With gathering together in the usual way off the table, the Parks and Recreation team got creative. Families stayed in their cars for a Halloween drive-through, making their way around the Community Center while taking in festive scenes. Staff even used clean trash grabbers to pass goodie bags through car windows. Because if there is one thing we learned in 2020, it is that sometimes you just have to improvise. The event moved again in 2021, this time to Taylor-Brawner Park while Village Green Park was under construction. After two years there, Parks and Recreation realized the location was too large and lacked the power access the event needed. So in 2023, they tried something new. They brought Halloween to Smyrna Market Village. And that is when everything seemed to fall into place. The celebration officially became Spooky Fest, Market Village businesses CONTINUED >

There are some events that just feel like Smyrna. The kind where you run into three people you know before you make it halfway down the street, kids are darting from one activity to the next, parents are catching up with friends, and the whole evening feels more like a neighborhood gathering than an organized event. Spooky Fest is one of those nights. On Friday, October 16, Smyrna Market Village will once again fill with families for candy stops, music, food vendors, photo opportunities, a pet costume parade and movies on the Village Green. And perhaps the best part? The whole evening is free. Spooky Fest may feel like a natural part of Smyrna’s fall calendar now, but it has taken quite a journey to get here. When Smyrna Parks and Recreation’s Jodi Mills began working for the city in 2010, the department’s Halloween celebration looked a little different. Back then, it was called Casper’s Friendly Castle and was held on a Friday morning inside the Smyrna Community Center for preschoolers, with inflatables, carnival games, hayrides and a magic show.

“Come dressed as a ghost. Come with a dog dressed as dinner. Come straight from work. Come with your kids, your neighbors or your friends.” joined in as candy stops, and families could wander from storefront to storefront through the heart of downtown. Suddenly, the event felt less like something happening at Market Village and more like Market Village itself was part of the celebration. For Jodi, that community involvement is one of the things that makes Spooky Fest feel particularly Smyrna. Local businesses get to welcome families through their doors, Parks and Recreation gets a little help with the mountain of candy needed for the evening, and residents get to experience Market Village in a different way. Everybody wins. Last year, Parks and Recreation partnered with Lickers & Whines to add a pet costume parade — exactly the kind of entertainment you would expect from animals dressed for Halloween. Among the memorable entries were a spaghetti-and-meatballs costume and a Chihuahua cruising in a remote-controlled car. The pet parade returns this year at 6:30 p.m., and Jodi says Lickers & Whines has even bigger plans in store. Families can also expect candy stops, music, food vendors and “Spooky Scenes” perfect for Halloween photos. Parks and Recreation will hand out special trick-or-treat bags, and costumes are encouraged — but never required. “Everyone is welcome,” Jodi said. “Families can come as they are for an enjoyable evening.” And really, that may be the best way to describe Spooky Fest. Come dressed as a ghost. Come with a dog dressed as dinner. Come straight from work. Come with your kids, your neighbors or your friends. Just come ready to have some fun. Because for one October evening, Market Village turns into one big neighborhood Halloween party. And everyone is invited.

Fresh on the Menu Eight delicious reasons to explore Smyrna and Vinings now ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
DUMPLING CROWN South Cobb Drive has a delicious new addition. Dumpling Crown opened this summer with a menu built around handmade dumplings, including pork and chive, chicken and seafood varieties, plus soup dumplings, pan-fried juicy buns, dim sum, noodles and plenty of Chinese favorites. There is also boba, fruit tea and lemonade for good measure. If you have been wishing for a dedicated dumpling spot a little closer to home, this may be the excuse you needed to make a quick trip down South Cobb. 4 9 2 4 S . C O B B D R . S E , S T E . ZOYA MEDITERRANEAN KITCHEN & COCKTAILS Zoya brings a little extra atmosphere to dinner on Concord Road. The Mediterranean restaurant pairs fresh seafood, grilled meats, herbs, olive oils and bold spices with cocktails and wine, all in a space that feels made for lingering. The beautifully designed interior is lovely, but the spacious patio may be the real scene-stealer. Whether the plan is date night, dinner with friends or simply cocktails somewhere pretty, Zoya gives Smyrna another polished — but still inviting — place to settle in and stay awhile. 1 0 61 C O N C O R D R D. Smyrna and Vinings have never exactly been short on good places to eat, but lately, our local dining scene has been giving us plenty of new reasons to pull up a chair. New restaurants are opening their doors, longtime favorites are settling into bigger spaces and familiar names are trying something new. From handmade dumplings and Mediterranean flavors to riverfront dining, barbecue, tacos and wood-fired pizza, there is a little something for just about every craving. Here are eight spots worth adding to your “where should we eat?” list this fall.
RIVERVIEW GRILL There are river views — and then there is dinner beside the Chattahoochee. Riverview Grill, one of the newest arrivals at Riverview Landing, pairs a wide-ranging menu with one of the prettiest settings around. Southern favorites such as fried chicken share space with seafood, burgers, salads and dishes like seared salmon and grilled sea bass. Owners Jessica and Kwame Vanderpuije envisioned it as a neighborhood gathering place where a casual family dinner and a special night out could feel equally at home — and the riverfront backdrop certainly does not hurt. 6 0 2 5 R I V E R V I E W R D. INDIGO ROOM Part dinner destination, part night out, Indigo Room brought something a little different to Concord Road when it opened late last year. The menu leans into Southern and Lowcountry-inspired comfort food, with shrimp and grits, braised oxtails, fried green tomatoes, gumbo and brown butter bread pudding among the choices. But the food is only part of the fun. An intimate stage hosts live jazz and neo-soul performances throughout the week, making Indigo Room the kind of place where dinner can easily turn into an entire evening. 8 2 1 C O N C O R D R D. BETO’S TACOS Beto’s Tacos officially joined downtown Smyrna this spring, opening beside StillFire Brewing on King Street. The casual taqueria keeps things easy with tacos, burritos and other Mexican favorites, making it just as good for a quick bite as it is for a relaxed meal with the family. And with a locally brewed beer waiting right next door, it fits naturally into a downtown afternoon or evening. It is one more reason to come hungry when you head toward the Market Village area. 2 7 2 5 K I N G S T. OWENS & CO. One of the area’s best-known barbecue spots has entered a new chapter. Formerly Owens & Hull, the Riverview Landing restaurant is now Owens & Co., with Robert Owens and his team continuing to turn out craft barbecue smoked over locally sourced Georgia oak. The restaurant has also expanded into the neighboring former Reformation Brewery space, bringing additional seating, cocktails and new menu offerings along with it. The name may have changed, but barbecue lovers can still expect brisket, pulled pork and plenty of the smoky goodness that put this place on the map. 6255 R I V E RV I E W R D. CRISPINA RISTORANTE & PIZZERIA A longtime Vinings favorite has a new home — without leaving the neighborhood. Crispina Ristorante & Pizzeria moved just down Cobb Parkway into a significantly larger space, giving the popular Italian restaurant more room for the handmade pastas and naturally leavened pizzas it has been serving since 2015. The new location still feels comfortably familiar, with a wood-fired oven, full-service dining and patio space, but now there is simply more room to enjoy it all. Sometimes “what’s new” means getting more of something we already loved. 3 1 5 5 CO B B P K W Y. ¡AY CARAMBA! MEXICAN CANTINA Bright flavors and a little fiesta energy have landed on Windy Hill Road at ¡Ay Caramba! Mexican Cantina. The family-owned restaurant serves plenty of Mexican favorites, from queso fundido and fresh guacamole to tacos, fajitas and birria — including a seriously indulgent birria pizza. Margaritas and cocktails are part of the equation, of course, and weekend night owls get an added bonus: the restaurant stays open until 3 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. It is casual, colorful and made for gathering around the table. 1 0 8 0 W I N DY H I L L R D. Around here, deciding where to eat may be getting harder — but only in the best possible way. Whether you are craving dumplings on a Tuesday night, barbecue by the river, Italian comfort food, cocktails on a patio or tacos long after everyone else has gone home, there is something new to discover close by. And with Smyrna and Vinings continuing to grow, something tells us this “where should we eat?” list is not going to get any shorter.

When my wife and I returned to Hawaii this summer, we approached the trip much differently than we had our honeymoon four years earlier. This time, we were on a mission: find the most unique restaurants and food experiences we could. That journey took us down the Road to Hana for famous banana bread and handturned huli-huli chicken, to farms growing chiles for hot sauce and cacao for Maui-made chocolate, and eventually to Mama’s Fish House on Maui’s North Shore — a reservation we had spent months trying to secure. Mama’s is family-owned, founded in 1973, and still deeply connected to the island. The menu changes daily based on the freshest catch, even listing the boat and fisherman responsible for each fish. We tried as much as we could, including Ahi Poisson Cru, Macadamia Nut Crab Cakes, Shrimp Wontons and Seared Beef and Papaya. But the highlight was Mama’s Fish House Curry: fresh fish in a rich coconut curry, more sweet than spicy, with mango chutney, banana, macadamia nuts and sambal adding layers of tropical flavor. With a few tips from the staff, I knew I had to recreate it at home. I hope this version brings a little taste of Hawaii to your table as summer fades into fall. Until next time… Grill On!

DIRECTIONS 1. Toast coconut, if using, in a dry skillet over medium-low heat 3–5 minutes. Set aside. 2. Blanch green beans for 2 minutes and carrots for 3 minutes; transfer to ice water and drain. Sauté mushrooms 3–4 minutes. Add bell pepper, beans and carrots; cook 2 minutes. Add snap peas and cook 1 minute more. Remove. 3. Heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-low. Cook curry paste 2–3 minutes. Add coconut cream and cook 3 minutes. Whisk in coconut milk, brown sugar, fish sauce, shrimp paste, lemongrass and ginger. Simmer uncovered 10–12 minutes. Finish with lime juice. 4. Pat mahi-mahi dry and season with salt and white pepper. Cook in a skillet, on a griddle or grill until browned outside and slightly underdone in the center. 5. Return vegetables to the curry and simmer 1–2 minutes. Add mahi-mahi, spoon curry over the fish and cook gently 2–3 minutes, just until done. 6. Serve over jasmine rice with garnishes as desired.
PIRATE’S NOTE Keep the curry rich and coconut-forward, the vegetables crisp-tender and the mahi-mahi just cooked through. The optional garnishes bring the sweet, savory and spicy contrast that makes this dish feel straight from Kuau Cove. BETTING BIG ON Fair Oaks Five local businesses went all in to support students at Fair Oaks Elementary School. ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The cards were on the table — and several local businesses went all in for the kids. On September 11, the Smyrna Business Exchange chapter of BNI hosted its sixth annual Casino Night benefiting Fair Oaks Elementary School in Marietta. The evening included casino-style table games, food and drinks, raffle drawings, a silent auction and a grand prize, but the real payoff was the opportunity to support students right here in our community. Fair Oaks is a Title I school, serving many students from economically disadvantaged households. Leading the school is Principal Cathie Seibert, an Army veteran whose
adventures once included driving tanks and rappelling down mountains. These days, she channels that same fearless energy into building a strong school community and making sure her students have every opportunity to succeed. Through the BNI Foundation’s Business Voices initiative, the Smyrna Business Exchange has made supporting Fair Oaks an important part of its community involvement. This year’s Casino Night was also made possible by five premier sponsors who may work in very different industries, but clearly share something in common: a willingness to show up for their community.

Some people prefer packing a homemade feast inside a classic woven basket, while others favor grabbing warm local takeout on their way to the grass. Fortunately, anyone living in the charming Smyrna, Vinings area has access to an incredible spectrum of outdoor escapes. Choosing the perfect location to unroll a blanket this weekend simply comes down to picking your ideal backdrop. For anyone seeking a quintessential, vibrant park experience, Taylor Brawner Park on Atlanta Road remains the undisputed crown jewel of the area. Community life unfolds effortlessly across these grounds every day of the week. Morning joggers share the paved loops with neighbors catching up during the weekly walk, while children joyfully chase one another across the main lawn. What makes Taylor Brawner such an ideal picnic destination is its incredible spatial versatility. A vast, sun draped lawn occupies the center of the grounds, offering endless room to stretch out for an

afternoon of frisbee or relaxing under the warm Georgia sky. If you prefer avoiding the direct midday heat, a dense perimeter of long standing trees provides thick, reliable shade. Near the left side of the park is a large, open gazebo which also offers shelter and a place to sit and relax when the weather turns humid. Families with young children will find this spot particularly convenient due to its expansive and unique playground. Parents can easily relax over their lunch while keeping an attentive eye on their kids as they burn off excess energy. If your ideal afternoon leans more toward quiet serenity over community bustle, the solution lies just a short drive away at Cobb Park. While local sports enthusiasts know this destination primarily for its busy athletic fields and active recreational facilities, true relaxation seekers head straight for the park’s secluded far side. Tucked away from the main ball fields and noisy parking lot, this remarkably quiet corner feels less like a suburban public space and more like a secret neighborhood hideaway. A peaceful, heavily shaded field gives way alongside a picturesque natural ravine, giving the space a secluded, sunken privacy that effectively blocks out surrounding traffic. The dense canopy overhead creates a refreshing and cooled microclimate, even during the peak of summer, turning this spot into a top spot for settling in with a good book or enjoying an uninterrupted conversation. While noticeably more peaceful and far less crowded than larger regional destinations, it still conveniently features a small, low key playground. This makes it a fantastic compromise for parents who want a calm, unhurried atmosphere without completely sacrificing built-in entertainment for little ones. CONTINUED >

Located just steps away from the park is Owens & Co BBQ, a beloved local staple serving tender slow-smoked brisket, pulled pork, and classic savory sides. Carrying a warm container of fresh barbecue straight over to a shaded table beside the moving river is the ultimate weekend upgrade.
Finally, for an outdoor meal defined by distinct natural scenery and minimal prep work, the rapidly growing Riverview Park along the Chattahoochee corridor delivers something truly special. Offering a refreshingly different backdrop than Smyrna’s inland green spaces, this waterside park brings a gentle breeze and the rhythmic movement of the river straight to your blanket or bench. Overlooking the river is a sturdy platform with picnic tables positioned underneath shaded canopies to capture optimal views of the passing water, while eliminating some of the direct heat. It is a fantastic setting to sit back, watch the river flow by, and take a much needed breather from the weekly grind. The real highlight of Riverview Park, however, is that packing a basket is entirely optional. Located just steps away from the park is Owens & Co BBQ , a beloved local staple serving tender slow-smoked brisket, pulled pork, and classic savory sides. Carrying a warm container of fresh barbecue straight over to a shaded table beside the moving river might just be the ultimate weekend upgrade. Whether you favor the lively atmosphere of a central park, the quiet solitude of a wooded ravine, or the breezy charm of a waterside feast, the Smyrna, Vinings area has a picnic ready spot waiting just for you.
