SMALL BUSINESS INSIDER
Advertisement
The Myth of Building Business Credit New business owners often incorrectly expect that banks, in association with the Small Business Administration (SBA), will loan money to help build a new business. While it’s true loans may be available to help purchase commercial property and to provide working capital, those loans are for people who can make a sizable down payment and can guarantee their loan with collateral. A good personal credit score is also a requirement. We hear all the time from new business owners that they want to build business credit, but it’s not easy to do. Business Credit Score: The only well-established business credit tracking firm is D&B. Any business can register with D&B, and it seems they do a good job of tracking reports of the purchase and payment of products on NET terms (Example: NET 30 means the payment for the goods is due in 30 days). The product supplier extends credit and ships the products based on your promise to pay within a set number of days. Larger product suppliers report payments to D&B as “late” or “on time”. Other product suppliers pay D&B for a credit report so they can decide if they are willing to offer you NET Terms (“credit”). Pay your bills on time and more suppliers will extend credit with better terms (longer repayment times). This system works well for businesses that purchase products in bulk and pay on time. Retail Stores Offering Credit Reporting: Sometimes stores advertise that they report business purchases to credit bureaus. If you need to buy office supplies for your business and an office supply store advertises “We report purchases to credit bureaus”, that may sway your selection of which store to use for your purchase. Also, to get that purchase reported to a credit bureau, you may even be willing to pay a small premium on those office supplies. Purchases without NET terms have no credit value. Even if the store will invoice you for the purchases (effectively extending credit), the amount paid is almost always too low to be on the credit bureau radar. It’s just a marketing trick.

Business Credit Building Services: The internet is loaded with articles about building business credit. Those articles are often created by businesses selling business credit building services. Your “scam radar” should be flashing a warning. Finding value in those services is hard. Reality: Your personal credit truly is your businesses credit until you can show a long history of constant cash flows from sales into your business bank account, along with on time bill payments. When banks see a good payment history, they will extend lines of credit, and perhaps will be more willing to back SBA loans. Until you are many years into a successful business journey, your personal credit score and ability to provide collateral will remain the primary credit decision factors.

LIFESTYLE LETTER
From the Editor . . . Hello, lovely readers, May is here—and with it, one of my favorite issues of the year. Our annual “Ladies Issue” is a celebration of the women who uplift, inspire, and shape our community in big and small ways. From entrepreneurs to educators, athletes to artists, and lifelong friends to newfound mentors, this month is brimming with stories that shine a spotlight on the power of women supporting women. In this issue, we honor Hearts of Influence—local women who lead with compassion, strength, and vision. We cheer on the young girls finding their stride and their confidence through Girls on the Run, and we stretch into the mind-body magic of Carriage House Collective Pilates, where strength and sisterhood go hand-in-hand. We also take a look at the trailblazing women-led organizations making meaningful change, and share the story of a local photographer whose work captures love in all its forms. The Sisterhood Effect will tug at your heartstrings with stories of friendship that remind us just how powerful connection can be. And of course, we couldn’t forget about Mother’s Day. Whether you're celebrating your mom, your grandmother, a mentor, or one of the many maternal figures who've loved you like their own, May is the perfect time to say thank you. We’ve even got a brunch guide to help you plan the perfect celebration. (And if my boys, Charlie and Henry, happen to be reading this... this is your not-so-subtle reminder that your mama loves waffles!) Finally, we take a moment to honor the women of Smyrna’s past and welcome something new—a charming bookstore that feels like a hug and smells like coffee and possibility. To all the women in our community: thank you. Thank you for showing up, lifting each other up, and creating beauty and belonging wherever you go. Wishing you a joyful, love-filled May.

Hearts of Influence: Women Who Inspire, Lead, and Uplift Smyrna-Vinings FROM COURTROOMS TO CLASSROOMS, PULPITS TO PLAYGROUNDS, THESE FOUR EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN REMIND US OF THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP, FAITH, AND GIVING BACK. ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM & HALEY HALL In every thriving community, there are women quietly shaping lives, lifting others, and leaving legacies of love and leadership. In Smyrna-Vinings, we’re lucky to have many—but four in particular shine with purpose and heart. Whether they’re blazing trails in the courtroom, pouring into the next generation, guiding others in faith, or building bridges through service, Judge Kellie Hill, Elizabeth McRae, Emily Manginelli, and Pat Reynolds exemplify the beauty of women supporting women. Their stories are unique, yet deeply connected by a common thread: the belief that true influence comes from compassion, courage, and connection.

“BALANCE LOOKS DIFFERENT IN EVERY SEASON, YOU JUST DO THE BEST YOU CAN AND GIVE YOURSELF GRACE.” -JUDGE HILL
Judge Kellie S. Hill: A Trailblazer on the Bench and in the Community
If you spend just a few minutes with Judge Kellie Hill, one thing becomes clear: she leads with purpose, passion, and a deep love for the Smyrna-Vinings community. Elected in 2020 to the Cobb County Superior Court, Judge Hill is not only making history -- she’s making a difference. Her journey to the bench began with inspiration in her teen years after meeting the first African American female judge in her hometown. “I knew then that pursuing law was the path I wanted to take,” she says. That early spark led to decades of service -as a prosecutor, a private attorney, and ultimately, a judge. Her election to the Superior Court marked a historic milestone, as she became the first judge of color sworn in to hold the role in Cobb County. But for Judge Hill, the true reward lies in what comes next. “It’s not just about being the first -- it’s about making sure others can follow,” she shares. That sentiment shines through in her work, especially in her pretrial diversionary court, where she’s watched young adult lives transform for the better. Judge Hill doesn’t just serve from the bench -- she’s an active presence across the community. Whether speaking at school Career Days, hosting students in her courtroom, or judging local competitions, she’s passionate about showing young people what’s possible. She’s active in many legal organizations and also serves as president of her HOA, is involved in several local boards, and is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. As a woman in law, she’s faced her share of challenges -- being underestimated chief among them. Her response? Preparation, professionalism, and perseverance. “Being highly competent has always been my answer,” she says with a smile. Now an “empty nester,” Judge Hill reflects on how she once juggled family, work, and community with help from her husband and mother. “Balance looks different in every season,” she says. “You just do the best you can and give yourself grace.” What might surprise you? Judge Hill once took dance lessons on Broadway and dreamed of joining a professional troupe. While life took a different path, her love of movement, energy, and expression is still very much part of who she is. Her guiding principle? “Be intentional -- and treat others the way you want to be treated.” Spoken like a true leader -- and one our community is lucky to have.

Elizabeth McRae:
A Life Dedicated to Giving Back When Elizabeth McRae walked into the Vinings Rotary Dinner, she thought she was there to celebrate her parents. Instead, she was stunned to hear her own name called -- honored as the 2024 Vinings Rotary Citizen of the Year. Completely caught off guard, she found herself momentarily speechless -- something she says never happens. An Atlanta native, Elizabeth grew up in Vinings and attended Teasley Elementary and Griffin Middle School before graduating from Pace Academy. Her journey into community service began early, inspired by her parents’ dedication to giving back. From organizing neighborhood cleanups to volunteering at the Vinings Fair, she learned firsthand the impact of investing time, talent, and treasure. Her passion for service took root in high school through Young Life, where she was mentored by adults who made a lasting impression. After a few years in consulting, she felt called to give back in the same way. This led to 25 years on Young Life’s Development Staff, where she has played a pivotal role in raising over $100 million for 4 camps and initiatives across the Southeast. She is especially proud of her fund-raising efforts to provide these camps -- safe spaces where kids can unplug, have pure fun, build friendships, and explore their faith. Beyond Young Life, Elizabeth has championed local education initiatives, securing funding for smart boards, outdoor gardens, and playgrounds at Teasley Elementary. She helped launch swim teams, organize international nights, and is a proud member of the Tire Swing Collective Board, which provides trauma-informed outdoor spaces for foster children. Whether leading projects at her church or in her neighborhood, she finds joy in uniting people around a cause, believing that small, meaningful efforts create lasting change. Her philosophy? “Bloom where you are planted.” She believes that no matter the stage of life, anyone can make an impact. “It doesn’t have to be full-time -- just giving back in some way keeps life in perspective and brings joy.” Her deep belief in fostering connections and encouraging others to serve has made her a guiding force for countless volunteers. Receiving the Citizen of the Year award is a testament to the values instilled in her since childhood. As Elizabeth humbly puts it, “Serving others has given me far more than I have given. It’s a privilege to be part of something bigger than myself.” She hopes her story inspires others to contribute in their own way and embrace the joy of making a difference.

Emily Manginelli:
“MUCH OF MY LIFE HAS BEEN SHAPED BY INCREDIBLE WOMEN -- MY MOTHER, MY SISTER, MY AUNT -- WHO SHOWED ME THE STRENGTH, JOY, AND BEAUTY OF BEING A WOMAN.” -EMILY MANGINELLI
Leading with Love
If you ask Emily Manginelli what fuels her passion, she’ll tell you it’s people -- loving them, leading them, and walking alongside them in faith. As one of the pastors at The Square Church in Smyrna, a devoted wife, and a mother of four, Emily has found a way to blend ministry, motherhood, and mentorship into a life of meaningful impact. Emily’s love for ministry began at a young age when she was captivated by the Bible and the relationship she built with God through it. “I knew I wanted to spend my life teaching people about God,” she shares. When she met her husband, Phil, who also felt called to pastoral ministry, it became clear that building a strong, local church would be a central part of their lives. Balancing her many roles is no small feat, but Emily approaches it with a deep sense of purpose. “My family is my first priority,” she says. “If I am serving the church more than my family, I have misaligned priorities.” Yet, she also acknowledges the unique challenges of full-time ministry, ensuring that the joys outweigh the sacrifices for her children. From traveling together to being surrounded by a community that loves and nurtures them, the Manginelli kids experience firsthand what it means to live out faith in an authentic way. One of Emily’s favorite aspects of ministry is fostering a spirit of generosity and community. Two of The Square Church’s most impactful events -- the Back to School Bash and Trunk or Treat -- highlight this beautifully. Every summer, the church collects and distributes a thousand backpacks filled with school supplies to local children. “Getting to know our neighbors and seeing our church show up in generosity is a beautiful snapshot of what we dreamed our church would be,” Emily reflects. And as for Trunk or Treat? “Put me in a costume any day,” she laughs. At her core, Emily identifies as a “Warrior of Truth and Beauty,” a phrase that perfectly encapsulates her mission. “Much of my life has been shaped by incredible women -- my mother, my sister, my aunt -- who showed me the strength, joy, and beauty of being a woman,” she says. Now, she seeks to pass that wisdom on, inspiring women to embrace their unique gifts. Her message to women in the community? “Own who you are. Be the most woman you can possibly be, without apology.” Emily Manginelli is more than a pastor -- she’s a mentor, a mother, a leader, and a friend to so many in Smyrna. And through her unwavering faith and commitment to others, a reminder that true influence comes from serving others with an open heart.

Pat Reynolds:
A Lifetime of Love and Learning For more than five decades, Pat Reynolds has been a guiding light in the Smyrna-Vinings community, shaping young minds with warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Today, she continues her passion for teaching at Redeemer Day School, leaving an indelible mark on countless students and their families. Pat’s journey into education didn’t follow the typical path. In fact, she laughs at the memory of her early school days, describing herself as a troublemaker who never imagined setting foot in a school again after graduation. “I often tell people that my first trip to the principal’s office was in the first grade! I hated school and was a problem for all of my teachers,” she recalls with a chuckle. But life had other plans. When her own children were young, she sought a Christian education for them and approached Mrs. James Heiskell, a dear family friend who owned a private Christian school in Buckhead. That moment opened the door to a career that would define her life’s purpose. In 1973, Pat began teaching at The Heiskell School, where she spent 40 years nurturing pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. Her classroom was a place of laughter, love, and, above all, faith. “I pray that my greatest impact has been to share the gospel and love of Christ with both my students and their families,” she says. For her, teaching has never been just about academics -- it’s been about shaping hearts and instilling values that last a lifetime. Over the years, Pat has witnessed immense change in the Smyrna-Vinings community, where she has lived for more than 53 years. Through it all, her commitment to her students and her faith has remained steadfast. “Teaching has been my greatest joy,” she shares. “Challenges have been minimal or nonexistent because I truly love what I do.” Her message to aspiring educators and young women striving to make a difference is simple yet profound: “Stay faithful to God’s word and do not be distracted by the world around you. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and others as much or more than you love yourself.” For those who have had the privilege of knowing Pat, her legacy is one of boundless love, infectious joy, and an unwavering commitment to faith and education. She hopes to be remembered as someone who loved her Savior, cherished her students, and spread kindness wherever she went. And without a doubt, she will be.

R u n n i n g Towa rd Confidence GIRLS ON THE RUN GEORGIA CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF EMPOWERMENT
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY GIRLS ON THE RUN

G E T ACT IV E | SP O RTS + R E CRE AT ION
In a world that often tells young girls who they should be, Girls on the Run Georgia (GOTR) is helping them discover who they truly are. Through the joyful rhythm of running and the power of connection, this heart-driven program has been igniting confidence, resilience, and strength in girls for 25 incredible years. At its core, Girls on the Run is more than an after-school program. The organization’s mission is beautifully simple yet deeply impactful: to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that integrates running. The vision? A world where every girl knows her limitless potential. The program runs (pun intended!) in both the spring and fall, and it’s built on more than just miles. Over the course of ten weeks, girls in 3rd through 8th grade meet twice a week to explore important life skills through dynamic lessons paired with physical activity. The season culminates in a celebratory 5K, where girls cross the finish line with not only a medal around their necks but a new understanding of their own strength. Each lesson -- whether it’s about standing up for yourself, being a good friend, or setting goals -- gives girls tools they’ll carry with them far beyond the program. It’s about more than speed or endurance; it’s about overcoming challenges and learning that they can do hard things. Locally, Girls on the Run Georgia has left its mark in Smyrna-Vinings for over a decade, partnering with schools like King Springs Elementary, Smyrna Elementary, Teasley Elementary, and Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School. And they’re not slowing down. With a focus on expansion and accessibility, the team is working hard to bring the program to even more schools
across the area -- ensuring that every girl who wants to participate has the opportunity. As they celebrate their 25th anniversary, GOTR Georgia is looking back on the journey with pride. Since their founding, they’ve empowered more than 42,000 girls -- each one with her own unique story. To mark this milestone, they’re launching a “25 Days of Girls on the Run Georgia” campaign in April filled with heartfelt stories, volunteer spotlights, and opportunities to get involved. And this fall, they’ll host a special event to keep the celebration going. For those inspired to get involved, there are many ways to support Girls on the Run. The program relies on a village of volunteers -- from energetic coaches who cheer girls on every step of the way, to office helpers, event supporters, and even board members who help guide the organization’s future. Fundraisers and local partnerships also play a vital role in making the program accessible to all girls, regardless of background or financial barriers. Perhaps one former participant said it best: “At Girls on the Run, I learned how to be true to myself and how to support others. The connections I made are long-lasting and powerful. The skills I learned are still with me today. And I still use them when I am struggling.” That’s the essence of Girls on the Run. It’s about more than running -- it’s about becoming. And here in SmyrnaVinings and beyond, girls are lacing up their sneakers and discovering that the finish line is just the beginning. To bring Girls on the Run to your school, volunteer as a coach, or register your child for the upcoming fall season, visit girlsontherunga.org or email info@girlsontherunga.org. Let’s keep running toward a future where every girl shines.
“At Girls on the Run, girls do more than cross a finish line -- they discover courage, build lifelong confidence, and learn they are capable of far more than they ever imagined.” CONTINUED >

Fitness trends come and go, but at Carriage House Collective, the focus is on something lasting: strength, confidence, and community. This boutique Reformer Pilates studio, founded by best friends and fitness enthusiasts Devon Barill and Jade Kimball, is bringing a fresh and inviting space for movement to the Smyrna-Vinings area.
A DREAM TURNED REALITY
For Devon and Jade, opening Carriage House Collective was more than a business venture— it was the fulfillment of a long-held dream. “We’ve always loved Reformer Pilates and the way it strengthens both the body and mind,” says Jade. “More than that, we wanted to create a space where people could feel welcomed, supported, and part of something bigger.” The Smyrna-Vinings area was the perfect fit for their vision. Devon, a Smyrna resident, saw a gap in the local fitness landscape—while there were plenty of gyms and yoga studios, there wasn’t a boutique-style Reformer Pilates studio in the community. “We kept hearing from people who wished they had something like this close to home,” she explains. “So, we decided to make it happen.”
PILATES FOR EVERYBODY— AND EVERY BODY
One of the biggest misconceptions about Pilates is that it’s only for a certain type of person—ultra-fit, super-flexible, or already experienced in fitness. Devon and Jade want to shatter that myth. “Pilates is truly for everybody—every age, every body type, every ability level,” says Devon. “We understand trying something new can feel intimidating, but we are here to ensure that every person who walks through our doors feels comfortable and confident.” At Carriage House Collective, classes are designed to be accessible to all skill levels. The studio features ten reformers, ensuring that each client receives individualized attention. Instructors offer modifications for different abilities, so whether you’re a seasoned athlete or just beginning your fitness journey, there’s a place for you. CONTINUED >

MORE THAN JUST A WORKOUT
While the physical benefits of Pilates— improved strength, flexibility, and posture—are undeniable, Devon and Jade emphasize that its impact goes far beyond the body. “Life pulls us in so many directions,” says Jade. “Pilates gives you a moment of stillness and presence, a chance to reconnect with yourself.” For both founders, Pilates has been transformative. Devon, a mother, found that Reformer Pilates helped her regain core strength and confidence postpartum. Jade discovered Pilates after a knee injury from running the Chicago Marathon. “It was a game-changer in my recovery,” she shares. “Not just for my knee, but for my overall well-being.”
A WARM WELCOME AWAITS
From the moment you step into Carriage House Collective, you’ll feel the difference. The studio’s soothing earth tones, state-of-the-art equipment, and uplifting atmosphere set the stage for a workout that is both energizing and restorative. “We want people to feel at home here,” says Devon. “Our goal is to create a space where movement feels joyful and empowering.” Beyond fitness, Carriage House Collective is deeply invested in the Smyrna-Vinings community. The studio has already partnered with several local businesses and plans to host events that bring people together. “We believe wellness extends beyond the studio walls,” says Jade. “We want to support and uplift the community in every way we can.” Devon and Jade’s vision is clear: to build more than just a Pilates studio. They’re creating a space where strength, confidence, and community thrive.
CARRIAGE HOUSE COLLECTIVE To celebrate their opening, Carriage House Collective is offering special promotions, including an unlimited Founders Membership for $220 and a three-class pack for new clients at just $60. Located in Smyrna at 1675 Cumberland Parkway, Suite 406, the studio provides a welcoming environment for all fitness levels. WOMEN ON A MISSION Local Leaders Making a Lasting Impact ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ALANA WICKHAM, CALEB JONES, ABBY PYE
Every great movement starts with a spark—a moment of clarity, a need that can’t be ignored, a heart stirred to action. Across Smyrna, Vinings, and the greater Atlanta area, women are leading with compassion, courage, and conviction—meeting needs, breaking barriers, and building stronger communities. In this special spotlight, we’re proud to share the stories of three remarkable women-led organizations making a meaningful difference—right here at home.

G R O W I N G C O M M U N I T Y, O N E GA R D E N AT A TI M E : Food Well Alliance When Kate Conner talks about soil, she’s talking about more than just dirt. “Healthy soil is the foundation for growing the most nutritious food we can put in our bodies—locally grown food.” As the Executive Director of Food Well Alliance, Kate believes local food has the power to bring people together, strengthen neighborhoods, and nourish communities. Food Well Alliance was founded in 2015 when Jim Kennedy, chair of Cox Enterprises, and Bill Bolling, founder of the Atlanta Community Food Bank, saw an opportunity to support Atlanta’s local food movement. Since then, the organization has helped over 300 community gardens, urban farms, and orchards across Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, and Clayton counties, providing more than $15 million in direct resources to growers. But growing local food isn’t always easy. Many urban farmers, community gardeners, and orchard stewards struggle with limited resources, lack of representation in decision-making, and public awareness of their work. Food Well Alliance is helping to change that by providing grants, supplies, compost, and hands-on support. They also raise awareness through advocacy, storytelling, and community events like the Soil Festival and Fruit Tree Sale, which help people connect with where their food comes from. Right now, the organization is working on its most exciting project yet: Leila Valley Community Farm. In partnership with Atlanta Housing, Food Well Alliance is transforming a vacant 7-acre site in southeast Atlanta into a thriving farm, garden, and orchard. “Leila Valley will define our future and shape urban agriculture in Atlanta for years to come,” Kate says. “It’s not just about growing food—it’s about growing community.” Kate’s passion for this work started with a love of soil and greenspace. After college, she moved to Atlanta and turned that passion into a mission: helping communities thrive through trees, gardens, and local food. Today, she lives in Smyrna with her

husband and two sons, where she tends to her own chickens and front-yard vegetable garden—a daily reminder that growing food isn’t just for large farms or rural areas. “You don’t need acres of land to be a part of the local food movement,” she says. Looking ahead, Kate hopes to see Food Well Alliance continue to grow. “One of my favorite quotes is from Audrey Hepburn: ‘To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.’ That’s what our growers are doing every day—planting hope for our city.” Want to get involved? It’s easy: volunteer, donate, or buy local— because small actions make a big difference in keeping Atlanta’s food system thriving. Learn more at foodwellalliance.org. C R E ATI N G R I PPLE S OF CHANGE: The Atlanta Women’s Foundation Kari B. Love has always believed in the power of women. As CEO of The Atlanta Women’s Foundation (AWF), she leads with conviction: when women and girls are supported, entire communities thrive. With 11 years at AWF—8.5 of those as CEO—she’s been at the forefront of driving meaningful change. It’s a belief rooted in the organization’s history. In 1986, a group of Atlanta’s trailblazing women business owners came together with a bold idea—to directly address the barriers holding women and girls back from economic security. What began as a fund within the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta became an independent foundation in 1998. Today, AWF remains the only public foundation in the state solely focused on the advancement of women and girls. “We exist because women’s and girls’ needs are still underfunded and often overlooked,” Kari explains. “Our mission is to be a catalyst for change in the lives of women and girls.” And change is exactly what they’re creating. AWF has invested nearly $30 million into organizations serving women and girls across five metro counties—Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett. These grants support programs focused on education, job readiness, childcare, healthcare, and more—helping women build safe, healthy, and economically self-sufficient lives. But AWF is about more than funding; it’s also about connection. Last year, their Community Investment Celebration was held at Atlanta City Hall for the first time. With Mayor Andre Dickens in attendance, AWF announced over $1 million in grants—a moment Kari describes as “a powerful reminder of what’s possible when we work together.” Another highlight is AWF’s signature Numbers Too Big To Ignore luncheon, now in its 29th year. The event draws more than 1,600 attendees and has become one of Atlanta’s most inspiring gatherings. “There’s nothing like being in that room,” Kari says. “It’s filled with energy, hope, and people ready to make a difference.” This year’s luncheon, featuring keynote speaker Hoda Kotb, will take place October 29 at the Georgia World Congress Center.
Kari B. Love, The Atlanta Women's Foundation (Photo by Alana Wickham)
AWF also empowers women through Inspire Atlanta, a personal and professional development program that’s raised over $2.3 million since 2018. “The growth we see in participants—in their confidence, their voice, their leadership—it’s incredible,” Kari shares. Looking ahead, AWF plans to launch a mental health grant initiative to address rising needs in underserved communities. “Mental health is key to economic self-sufficiency,” Kari says. “And women deserve access to care that truly supports them.” Want to help? Donate, attend an event, or simply spread the word. “Every action makes a difference,” Kari says. “Together, we’re building a better future for women and girls.” Learn more at atlantawomen.org. Tina Williford, The Table on Delk (Photo by Abby Pye)
C R E ATI N G A PL AC E O F REFUGE AND RENEWAL: The Table on Delk Some call it a calling. Others might say it’s the quiet, persistent tug of the heart that simply won’t let go. For Tina Williford, that calling took root years ago during a short-term mission trip to Guatemala, where she first encountered the heartbreaking
realities of exploitation. Upon returning home to Cobb County— where she’s lived for more than 35 years—Tina found herself drawn to serve even closer to home. Outreach work in Atlanta and time spent mentoring women in the Cobb County jail opened her eyes to the needs in her own backyard. When she realized there was no existing outreach in her area, Tina and her husband began praying about starting one. The result was The Table on Delk, a place of refuge and connection for women seeking a way out of difficult circumstances. Since its founding in 2017, what began with one simple daytime outreach has grown into a full-f ledged community effort. Today, The Table serves the community six days a week with warm meals, meaningful relationships, Bible studies, recovery support, and more. One initiative born out of the pandemic—Psalm 34:8 sack lunches—now provides weekday meals to local motels. In all they do, the focus remains the same: to show up with love, dignity, and unwavering belief in each person’s worth. Tina is quick to shift the spotlight to the courageous women and families served through The Table. “We currently support 22 brave ladies who have made the decision to leave the street life behind,” she shares. “But what’s even more powerful is the ripple effect—26 children connected to those women are now on a new path, too. We’re watching generational cycles being rewritten.” As the organization prepares to move into a larger space this May, the need for support is greater than ever. Whether it’s preparing a meal, decorating a cheerful placemat, or volunteering on-site, there are countless ways for local residents to get involved. “You don’t have to do something big,” Tina encourages. “Just start small. God delights in the beginning.” For Tina, faith is the steady foundation beneath everything she does. “Zechariah 4:10 reminds me not to despise small beginnings,” she says. “We’re simply called to begin—and trust that the work matters.” To learn more or find ways to help, visit thetableondelk.org.

Photographer Epiphany Wells-Booker honors her grandmother’s legacy by helping others feel seen, celebrated, and beautifully captured through Minnie Lee Studios. 46

INSPIRED BY LOVE, CAPTURING LIFE For Epiphany Wells-Booker, photography isn’t just about capturing a moment—it’s about celebrating people in all their vibrant, one-of-akind glory. Through her brand, Minnie Lee Studios, she’s not just taking pictures; she’s creating experiences that make people feel truly seen. The name Minnie Lee Studios is deeply personal. “It’s named after my amazing granny, Minnie Lee Young,” Epiphany shares with a warm smile. “She was the one who sparked my creativity. She could take something as simple as a napkin and turn it into a masterpiece—seriously. This studio is my way of honoring her legacy and helping people see themselves as the masterpieces they are.”
Epiphany’s photography style? Think bold, soulful, and full of personality—kind of like your favorite playlist. Epiphany has a natural talent for making people feel comfortable in front of the camera, turning every session into a joyful, effortless experience. “We’re talking about your favorite snacks, laughing about your latest movie obsession, and just having a great time,” she says. “By the end, I want you to walk away thinking, ‘Dang, I am fabulous!’” But Minnie Lee Studios isn’t just about photography. They also offer videography and graphic design services, with an exciting new chapter unfolding as they expand their creative reach with the launch of their first product: a whimsical sketchbook designed to ignite the artist within. Packed with playful prompts
and made entirely from recycled materials, this sketchbook is as sustainable as it is inspiring. And as a special touch, two pages are embedded with lavender seeds. “Plant them, water them, and watch something beautiful grow,” she says. “It’s our way of bringing art to life.” At its core, Epiphany’s mission is simple: to help people see their beauty, honor their stories, and spark a little joy along the way. “The best part of this journey is seeing someone light up when they see themselves through my lens,” she shares. “It’s like finding the perfect filter—but better, because it’s real.” We’re thrilled to have Epiphany as one of our contributing photographers at Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle. Keep an eye out—her creative magic might just pop up in an upcoming issue.

THE
Sisterhood EFFECT
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Stories of Friendships, Mentorship, and Collaboration Among Local Women
There’s a special kind of magic that happens when women come together—not out of obligation, but from a deep well of love, laughter, and loyalty. Whether rooted in shared history, mutual support, or the simple joy of connection, these friendships become lifelines. In this year’s “Ladies” issue, we’re shining a light on the bonds that build us up: friendships that have endured decades, weathered every season, and remind us all what it means to belong. These stories from Smyrna and Vinings-area women show that sisterhood is more than just companionship—it’s a lifeline, a mirror, a shelter in life’s storms.
FOR EV ER FR IEN DS
Melissa, Andrea, Nikki, Melanie, Jackie, Heather, Tamara & Marishell Some friendships fade with time. This one? It’s only grown stronger. For over forty years, these eight women have shown up for each other—through every season of life. They began with shared roots, but time brought different paths: motherhood for some, higher degrees for others, shifting beliefs and evolving priorities. But the love? Rock solid. Their secret? Acceptance. “We don’t need to be the same to be close,” they say. “We just need to show up.” And they do—again and again. Whether it’s sending a meal, showing up for surgery, delivering a hard truth, or texting something ridiculous at 2 a.m., they’re there. They don’t just celebrate the milestones—they show up for the messy middles and the weird Wednesdays too.

One moment captures their spirit perfectly: when one friend lost her mom, instead of sending a tasteful floral arrangement, they gave her a garden stone that read, “My mom died and all I got was this lousy garden stone.” She cackled. Then she cried. Then she hugged them all. Because they knew exactly what she needed—humor, honesty, and to feel seen. Though scattered across states, they make a point to reunite every year. It’s not easy aligning busy schedules, but it’s non-negotiable. Their dream destination? Somewhere tropical, sure— but really, it’s anywhere they can be together, laughing until they snort and finishing each other’s sentences. They’ve lived enough life to know: lovers may come and go, kids grow up, jobs shift—but girlfriends? The real ones? They’re forever.

For over 25 years, these women have been a constant in each other’s lives—a vibrant, laughter-filled, unbreakable circle. Together, they’ve weathered life’s milestones: weddings, births, divorces, new jobs, and hard goodbyes. “Our group text is the first to send a birthday wish or offer a virtual hug,” they say. “It’s like a heartbeat that keeps us connected.” They’ve built a rhythm of celebration and support—showing up not just for the big wins, but the small, daily triumphs and challenges. Their calendar includes two to three trips a year, where the real magic happens. Playa del Carmen’s Xcaret Resort was a standout: filled with laughter, dancing, and unexpected celebrity encounters. They floated through caverns and through life—side by side, with margaritas in hand and memories in the making. It was one of those rare trips where friendship felt effortless, timeless, and completely joyful.
Their theme song? Fittingly, it’s The Golden Girls anthem. It started as a joke after a stranger compared them to the beloved sitcom crew during a mountain getaway (to their slight offense— they relate more to Sex and the City). But the lyrics stuck: “Your heart is true, you’re a pal and a confidant.” What keeps them strong is simple: intention. They prioritize birthdays and each other, knowing time is precious. “We don’t need daily check-ins,” they say. “We just need to know the door is always open.” Their advice for other groups? Make birthdays a tradition. Whether it’s dinner, a card, or a girls’ trip—it’s an annual excuse to pour love into one another. And that love, over time, becomes legacy—one filled with friendship, fun, and stories that will last a lifetime. CONTINUED >

Some friendships feel like they were always meant to be—even if they didn’t start decades ago. For these six women, the connection was instant—but what they’ve created together is lasting, grounded in trust, belonging, and something undeniably real. They gather regularly—usually with food, banter, and something to sip—and those evenings have become sacred. It’s more than a break from the chaos; it’s a deep breath. A place to laugh, vent, or cry without judgment. Whether you show up in lashes or leggings, you’re welcome just as you are. And whatever life brings, these are the women you want in your corner. Each friend brings a different kind of light. One is the thoughtful heart who remembers your kid’s birthday before you do. Another is the calming presence who grounds the group with grace and steadiness. There’s the one whose quick wit lights up any room, and the quiet soul whose words land with depth and wisdom. One offers a spiritual and artistic lens that softens and inspires, while

another radiates spontaneity and joy, always reminding the group to say yes to life. They’re different in background and personality, but beautifully aligned in heart. Over time, they’ve become sounding boards, cheerleaders, truth-tellers, and soft places to land. They’ve helped one another grow into fuller, braver versions of themselves— reminding each other to slow down, speak up, and say yes to things that matter. It’s not about how long you’ve known someone. It’s about how deeply you’re known. And these women? They know each other by heart. True friendship doesn’t ask for perfection—only presence. These friendships remind us that the most meaningful bonds are often the simplest—showing up consistently, loving without conditions, and creating space to be exactly who we are. In a world that changes fast, sisterhood is the family we choose for ourselves—and the kind of love that lasts.

From Stem To Vase:
TRANSFORMING FLORALS INTO ART Flowers have a rich history of symbolic meanings. As far back as the 19th century, they were used to convey secret messages. Stories throughout history recount how flowers were used to send hidden messages between people. French publishers began producing flower dictionaries that cataloged the many floral codes that had been gathered over time. Some of these meanings were linked to the flower’s root name, often derived from mythology, while others were drawn from the flowers themselves. The colors, medicinal properties, and even the superstitions
62
T R E N D SE T T E R | L I FE + CU LT U RE
associated with these flowers all contributed to the creation of this secret language. In addition to their symbolic significance, flowers bring natural beauty to any interior, enhancing spaces with their color, texture, and mood-boosting qualities. Floral arrangements not only create a cozy atmosphere but also infuse a room with personality, elevating the overall ambiance. There are multiple ways to creatively integrate florals into your home, and whether using fresh or artificial flowers, creative displays can make quite the statement piece.
Florals and Fruit Add an extra burst of color and texture to your floral arrangement by layering fruit around the edges of your vase. To achieve this, place a smaller vase inside a larger one, ensuring the flowers stay contained in the inner vase to preserve their shape. Fill the surrounding space with water and then arrange sliced fruit along the vase’s outer sides. For a fresh touch, add ice cubes to keep the fruit looking vibrant longer and to hold them in place. Not only will the flowers’ fragrance fill the air, but the citrus notes from the fruit will add a refreshing scent.
Hanging Florals For a dramatic effect, try creating a hanging floral display. Floral cones are available for this style, or you can craft your own for a more personalized, organic look. The contrast between long-stemmed white flowers and a dark wall creates a striking visual impact. No matter how you choose to display them, flowers are a wonderful addition to any room. They boost mood, improve air quality, spark creativity, and bring a decorative charm to any space.
Flower Frogs Using a frog to display flowers creates a minimalist yet elegant look that highlights the individuality of each bloom. It helps the stems stay in place. To set it up, place the frog on your chosen display base, whether it’s a vase, bowl, platter, or any container you prefer. Then, simply insert the flower stems by gently pressing them into the prongs. Tip: Flowers with sturdy stems and a lighter top work best in a frog, as delicate blooms tend to lose their shape more quickly.

Standing Tall in Smyrna’s History Fanny Williams left a legacy of Civil Rights activism. ARTICLE BY TODD DEFEO PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEFF MEADOWS, CITY OF SMYRNA Photo Provided by City of Smyrna

For years, Fanny Williams’ name greeted visitors to Smyrna. That’s because the former Aunt Fanny’s Cabin at least nominally served as Smyrna’s visitors center. Williams’ namesake building was once part of a racially insensitive restaurant. The city purchased Aunt Fanny’s Cabin and used it as a rental facility but razed it amid growing national criticism. City officials decided that Aunt Fanny’s Cabin didn’t properly honor Williams, an African American woman remembered for her legacy of activism and push for social justice. Last year, Smyrna city officials unveiled a statue depicting Williams, culminating a years-long process to honor her. Details of Williams’ life are few. However, her legacy is being reevaluated for her role as a civil rights advocate before the Civil Rights Era. According to the city of Smyrna, Williams was born in Georgia shortly after the Civil War. She attended school through the third grade, later worked as a cook and was apparently widowed. Smyrna officials say Williams personally helped fund projects that benefitted the African American community, including a new Wheat Street Baptist Church building and the first hospital for AfricanAmericans in Cobb County. Williams died in 1949, but her legacy will live on thanks to Smyrna’s new statue beside the Smyrna History Museum.

From the moment you walk into Sincerely Yours Bookstore, it feels like stepping into a warm hug. Vintage furniture, playful pops of pink, and the faint scent of paper and possibility—this is not your average bookstore. It’s a heart project from co-owners and lifelong friends Mallory Gay and Madison Glines. “Our goal was to create more than just a bookstore,” says Madison. “We wanted a place where people—especially women— can connect, feel inspired, and celebrate the stories they love.” The store’s aesthetic is as intentional as its book selection. With 80% romance and 20% other fiction, it reflects the owners’ favorite genre while making room for everyone. “Even if you’re not a huge romance reader, we’ve got something for you,” Madison adds. “And if you are, you’re definitely in the right place.” Designed to feel like your fun grandma’s house (but pinker), every corner invites you to linger. Many pieces of furniture and decor are thrifted or vintage finds, adding a personal, cozy charm to the space. Community connection is at the heart of everything they do. From themed book clubs and author signings to their signature Arts, Crafts, and Autographs events, each gathering is crafted with creativity and care. This May, they’ll host a “Happy Hour with the Author” featuring Colleen Oakley—with cocktails, conversation, and a touch of bookish magic. Sincerely Yours is located in the heart of Smyrna. Women & Wealth: Why More Ladies Are Investing in Real Estate
Gone are the days when real estate investing was a man’s game. More women than ever are taking charge of their financial futures by buying homes and investment properties. Whether it’s securing a dream home, building wealth through rentals, or flipping houses for profit, real estate offers women financial independence, security, and long-term stability. Real estate is one of the most powerful wealth-building tools available, providing steady appreciation, passive income, and tax advantages. Unlike other investments, real estate offers a tangible asset—one that grows in value while serving as a home or income source. Pennington’s Pen “A wide door for effective ministry has opened for me…” 1 Corinthians 16:9 As the Apostle Paul brought his letter of 1 Corinthians to its close, he explained his reason for staying for a while in the city of Ephesus. He sensed that God had opened a door for effective ministry within the city, and he was compelled to walk through it. This verse is a fitting way to encapsulate one of the most significant decisions our church has made in its rich and vibrant history. First Baptist Smyrna has never been afraid to boldly walk through the doors that God has opened for us. In 1886, we built our first building in the heart of our city. In 1924 our historic rock chapel was completed, giving our church’s ministry to Smyrna an even larger imprint. God blessed our congregation with its current sanctuary in 1961, and this past month, God opened yet another door. First Baptist closed on a transaction with the City of Smyrna that allows us to build a new campus just a short walking distance away from our present location. Thanks to the God-supplied vision of our faithful members and the future thinking of our Mayor and City Council, this decision is a win on every front. The city will have the privilege to expand our downtown to make it an even more inviting place for neighbors and friends to gather. And for our church, the opportunity is filled with the promise of having a newly constructed, paid-for facility that allows us to reach Smyrna with the gospel for decades to come. True to its name, Smyrna First Baptist has always existed to put Smyrna first. Our church is unapologetically biblical, and as such, it is our deep desire, our calling really, to lead every person who calls Smyrna home into a loving, thriving relationship with Jesus. This decision to move and relocate our campus is not only consistent with our calling, but it was birthed directly from it. We love our Savior and we also love our city. This move brings both of these loves together. I humbly ask for you to pray for us as we seek to effectively minister to our community for the next generation. If you don’t currently have a church home, will you consider joining us as we walk through this wide-open door together?
