Dear Readers,

Every summer, I tell myself we are going to slow down.

And every summer, somehow, the calendar fills up anyway. There are work deadlines, family commitments, camps, appointments, errands, laundry, grocery runs and all the little things that seem to multiply the minute school lets out.

But even in the middle of all that, summer still has a way of inviting us to look up.

Maybe it’s the longer evenings. Maybe it’s the promise of a getaway. Maybe it’s the simple joy of having an extra hour of daylight to wander through a local market, try a new bakery or take the long way home. Whatever it is, July always seems to whisper, “Go see something.”

This month’s Explore issue is full of beautiful reminders that adventure can take many forms.

In Burke’s Along the Danube, we’re swept into the charm and history of one of Europe’s most scenic river journeys. Ashley takes us to Providence Canyon, proving that some of the most breathtaking views can be found right here in Georgia. Sean gives us a dreamy look at Sailrock South Caicos, the kind of destination that makes you start mentally packing before you’ve even finished reading.

And then, closer to home, we explore the flavors and everyday pleasures that make our own community feel special — from the sweet, beautiful world of Paris Baguette to the charm of our local markets, where neighbors, makers, growers and dreamers gather week after week.

That’s what I love most about Smyrna and Vinings. We are close enough to the airport to dream big, but we are also surrounded by small, beautiful ways to explore right here at home.

I think that’s what I love most about exploring, too. It does not always have to be grand. Sometimes it is a plane ticket and a passport. Sometimes it is a canyon trail. Sometimes it is a croissant, a bunch of flowers, a handmade gift or a conversation with someone who loves what they do.

Exploration is really just curiosity in motion.

So this month, I hope you let summer surprise you. Go somewhere new. Revisit somewhere old. Try the thing you keep meaning to try. Make the stop. Take the picture. Buy the pastry. Bring home the flowers. Let yourself be delighted.

Whether your adventure takes you across the world or just across town, I hope it reminds you that there is still so much beauty waiting to be found.

The 2026 Smyrna Garden Tour was a blooming success for Keep Smyrna Beautiful, welcoming an average of 345 visitors at each of five featured homes and drawing a record turnout for the plant sale. More than 80 volunteers contributed over 300 hours on event day, helping make the annual fundraiser possible. There is something special about a local market day.

In Smyrna, Sundays in the Market Village bring the streets to life with more than 60 local makers, artisans and food vendors. Now in its sixth season, the Smyrna Handmade Market blends the feel of a traditional farmers market with the creativity of a handmade marketplace, offering everything from baked goods and specialty foods to original artwork, candles, soaps, jewelry and more.

Just up the road, the Vinings Farmers Market at Vinings Jubilee offers its own weekly gathering on Thursday afternoons. Set near the clocktower in the historic heart of Vinings, the market features a rotating mix of vendors with seasonal produce, fresh flowers, baked goods, local honey, prepared foods and specialty treats.

Together, these markets offer more than a place to shop. They are walkable, welcoming community gatherings where neighbors can bring the kids, the dog and a tote bag, then leave with flowers for the table, something sweet for later, dinner inspiration or a handmade gift. They also offer something even better: the chance to meet the people behind the products.

From fresh pasta and stuffed cookies to locally grown blooms and custom watercolor keepsakes, these four local makers bring their own stories, talents and heart to market day.

FELIX FARMS

When Haley and Scott Waller moved from Alpharetta to Smyrna in 2019, they were looking for a life that felt a little slower than the corporate pace they had known for more than a decade. What they found instead was a different kind of busy — one rooted in soil, seasons, early mornings, market days and armloads of flowers.

Through Felix Farms, the couple grows cut flowers and primarily sells fresh bouquets at local farmers markets. They also supply flowers to local floral designers and create arrangements for weddings and events. Their blooms are not always the varieties shoppers are likely to find in big box stores, and that is part of what makes them special. Many are harder to ship or less commonly offered commercially, giving customers the chance to discover flowers that feel a little more personal, a little more unexpected and a lot more local.

Right now, dahlias are a customer favorite, bringing plenty of color and drama to market bouquets. Celosia is another standout, often catching attention for its unusual texture and prompting lots of questions from curious shoppers.

Felix Farms can be found at the Vinings Farmers Market on Thursdays, the Sandy Springs Farmers Market on Saturdays and the Smyrna Handmade Market on Sundays. For Haley and Scott, those market days are about more than selling flowers. They are about happy faces, returning customers and the kind of community connection that makes the hard days — and the Georgia summer heat — worthwhile.

“And all of the cute dogs,” they add.

Looking ahead, the Wallers have big dreams for Felix Farms, including future local events, farm tours and classes. Customers ask about those experiences often, and Haley and Scott hope to one day invite the community even deeper into the beauty they are growing.

ANNA FAVATA PASTA

Some recipes are written on paper. Others are passed down through hands, habits and Sunday afternoons spent gathered in the kitchen.

For Ann Marie, the heart of Anna Favata Pasta is family. After her mother passed away, Ann Marie wanted to honor her in a way that felt meaningful and lasting. The business name grew from the women who helped shape her story: her mother, Maria Dominica Favata Scialo, and her grandmothers, Anna Scialo and Concetta Favata. Together, their names became Anna Favata — a tribute to the women who taught her that food is one of the most beautiful ways to bring people together.

Ann Marie grew up in a family where Sundays meant homemade bread, slow-simmered tomato sauce and fresh pasta made at home. With her father’s family from Naples and her mother’s from Puglia, pasta-making was more than a meal. It was a tradition, a rhythm and a reason to gather.

Today, Anna Favata Pasta carries those traditions to local markets through fresh pasta made in small artisanal batches with semola from Italy. Customers can find favorites like fettuccine and fusilli, along with specialty varieties infused with basil and rosemary or made with puréed spinach and tomato mixed directly into the dough. Ann Marie also offers Italian cookies and her father’s tomato sauce recipe, and she often brings something special each week, such as ravioli, lasagna or manicotti.

For Ann Marie, the Smyrna market community feels like an extension of the family table.

“Family is the most important part of my Italian heritage, and being part of the Smyrna market is being part of a wonderful community family,” she says.

HUMMINGBIRD BAKEHOUSE

Some market finds are meant to be saved for later. Others are best enjoyed immediately, with zero regrets and possibly a napkin nearby.

At Hummingbird Bakehouse, Freddy Cordero has turned the humble cookie into a full dessert experience. This small, family-owned bakery specializes in big, indulgent stuffed cookies made with creative flavors, quality ingredients and the kind of joy that feels right at home at a local market.

Hummingbird Bakehouse began as a weekend passion project. Freddy started by baking for family and sharing treats with the people closest to him. Over time, that love of baking grew into a business focused on cookies that are anything but ordinary. These are not your standard after-school cookies. Hummingbird Bakehouse cookies are thick, soft-baked and filled with rich centers like Nutella, cheesecake and cookie butter. Each one feels a little over-the-top in the very best way — part cookie, part dessert, part reason to circle back around the market before heading home.

WILD GARDEN ART

Some art is meant to decorate a room. Dana Palacio’s art is meant to hold a memory.

Through Wild Garden Art, Dana creates custom watercolor portraits of people, pets, homes and florals, along with botanical artwork inspired by antique patterns and styles. Her pieces are soft, personal and memory-filled — the kind of artwork that feels less like decoration and more like a keepsake.

“I like to say that my art is for the chronically nostalgic,” Dana says.

Wild Garden Art began in 2019 almost by accident. Dana had seen an artist creating watercolor portraits of homes and decided to try making her own as Christmas gifts for family. After posting one online, someone reached out to order a portrait of their own. That small moment opened the door to something bigger.

For several years, Dana continued painting on the side, teaching herself, practicing and expanding into new subjects. In 2023, she left the corporate world to pursue art full time.

Today, her most requested pieces are pet portraits, and as an animal lover herself, Dana understands why. She has painted

dogs, cats, a lizard, a bunny and even a bird, each one with its own personality and story. She is drawn to the memories behind her subjects — the beloved pet, the first home, the wedding bouquet, the place someone wants to remember.

That same sense of connection is what she loves about Smyrna. At the handmade markets, Dana gets to meet customers face-to-face, hear their stories and build friendships with other local makers. Even as Smyrna continues to grow, she says it often still feels like a small town where word travels quickly and new and old friends cross paths.

As a disabled artist and soon-to-be new mom, Dana is also passionate about accessibility, disability rights and the importance of supporting creatives in all seasons of life. Through Wild Garden Art, she has created work that not only honors others’ memories, but also allows her to build a life around creativity, care and connection.

ALONG THE

DANUBE

Meaningful Travel. Shared Experiences. Lasting Connections. That’s the vision behind the Smyrna Vinings Travel Club; and our very first journey together brought that vision to life in a way none of us will forget. Alongside several wonderful couples from our community, we set out on a 7-night Romantic Danube River cruise from Vilshofen, Germany to Budapest, Hungary aboard the

AmaLea with AmaWaterways. From the very beginning, this trip was about more than just visiting incredible destinations; it was about traveling with intention, building relationships, and experiencing the world together in a way that creates lasting connections.

One of the things that makes river cruising so special is the intimacy. With just around 150 passengers on board, it never feels crowded - just relaxed, comfortable, and personal. Throughout the week, we shared daily stories from our excursions, deepened friendships within our group, and connected with fellow travelers from around the world including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England, Brazil, as well as other parts of the United States.

PRAGUE: A STORYBOOK BEGINNING

Before the cruise began, we arrived in Prague three days early to explore and adjust to the time change and it turned out to be the perfect way to start the journey.

Prague is a city that feels like stepping into a living storybook. Its skyline is filled with spires, earning it the nickname “The City of a Hundred Spires,” and everywhere you turn there’s a sense of history layered over centuries. We wandered across the iconic Charles Bridge, lined with statues and alive with artists and musicians, taking in views of the Vltava River and Prague Castle rising in the distance.

Old Town Square quickly became a favorite gathering spot, where the famous Astronomical Clock draws crowds each hour, and the surrounding architecture from Gothic to Baroque and tells the story of the city’s past. We explored Prague Castle, one of the largest castle complexes in the world, and walked through the stunning St. Vitus Cathedral with its towering stained glass windows.

Beyond the landmarks, it was the atmosphere that made Prague so memorable with charming cobblestone streets, cozy cafés tucked around every corner, and a pace that invites you to slow down and take it all in. It gave us time to settle in, connect as a group, and truly begin the experience together.

From Prague, we traveled to Vilshofen to board the AmaLea . That evening, we were welcomed with a truly memorable experience of

an exclusive Oktoberfest celebration. Locals dressed in traditional Bavarian attire greeted us with lively folk music, dancing, and, of course, plenty of authentic German beer. It was the perfect kickoff to the journey ahead.

PASSAU: THE CITY OF THREE RIVERS

Our first stop was Passau, often called the “City of Three Rivers,” where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz converge. The city is a picture-perfect blend of colorful Baroque architecture, cobblestone streets, and stunning riverfront views. Towering above it all is St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to one of the largest pipe organs in the world.

Guests had several excursion options, from a guided walking tour to a scenic bike ride along the River Inn. Heather and I opted for the hike up to Veste Oberhaus, the historic fortress overlooking the city. The climb was well worth it! The panoramic views of the rivers meeting below and the charming rooftops of Passau created one of those unforgettable “pause and take it all in” moments.

That evening, we returned to the ship for cocktails and our first onboard dinner. Dining quickly became a highlight of each day. Every meal on the ship was thoughtfully prepared, often inspired by the region we were visiting. Guests could choose from a curated fivecourse menu or simply trust the chef’s recommendation, which never disappointed.

A FAIRYTALE CHOICE: SALZBURG OR ČESKÝ KRUMLOV

The next day brought a tough decision: visit Salzburg, the iconic setting of The Sound of Music, or explore the medieval town of Český Krumlov in the Czech Republic. As much as we love the Von Trapp story, we ultimately chose Český Krumlov - and we’re so glad we did.

Český Krumlov feels like stepping into a storybook. Nestled in a bend of the Vltava River, the town is filled with winding cobblestone streets, charming cafés, and beautifully preserved Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Above it all sits the impressive Krumlov Castle, offering sweeping views of the red-roofed town below. It’s no surprise

this UNESCO World Heritage site is considered one of Europe’s most picturesque small towns.

Later that day, we returned to Linz for a brief walk through its old city center, passing historic landmarks including the Mozart House.

THE WACHAU VALLEY & MELK ABBEY

One of the most scenic parts of the journey came as we cruised through the Strudengau and the UNESCO-designated Wachau Valley. Rolling hills covered in vineyards, quaint villages, and centuries-old castles lined the riverbanks—it was the kind of view you don’t want to miss.

We stopped in Dürnstein, where we enjoyed a walking tour complete with tastings of the region’s famous apricots, sweets, and local wines. From there, we traveled to Melk Abbey.

Perched high above the Danube, Melk Abbey is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. Its golden-hued façade, grand marble halls, and ornate frescoes are breathtaking, but the highlight is the library, home to thousands of ancient manuscripts and a ceiling adorned with intricate artwork. Beyond its beauty, the abbey has stood as a center of learning and spirituality for over 900 years, making it as historically significant as it is visually stunning.

VIENNA: ELEGANCE AND HISTORY

We woke the next morning to the grandeur of Vienna, often called the “City of Waltzes.” With its imperial palaces, elegant boulevards, and deep musical heritage, Vienna exudes timeless sophistication.

Our guided tour took us past some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Vienna State Opera, the Hofburg Imperial Palace, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral with its striking tiled roof. The historic city center is both grand and inviting, where horse-drawn carriages still clip-clop through the streets.

In the afternoon, we explored at our own pace, wandering through charming streets, stopping for coffee at traditional cafés, and soaking in the romantic atmosphere that makes Vienna so special.

BRATISLAVA: A HIDDEN GEM

Next, we arrived in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, a city that often surprises travelers with its charm and history. Its compact Old Town is filled with pastel-colored buildings, lively squares, and quirky details that make it feel both historic and approachable.

Bratislava Castle rises above the city, offering sweeping views of the Danube and even neighboring countries on a clear day. Whether strolling through its walkable streets, enjoying local cuisine, or simply taking in the relaxed pace, Bratislava offers a refreshing contrast to larger European capitals.

BUDAPEST: A GRAND FINALE

Our final day brought us to Budapest, one of Europe’s most stunning cities. Divided by the Danube into Buda and Pest, each side offers its own unique character.

We began on the Buda side, exploring the Castle District, including Fisherman’s Bastion with its fairy-tale towers and panoramic views, and Matthias Church with its colorful roof and rich history. In the afternoon, we crossed to the Pest side to visit landmarks like the Hungarian Parliament Building, Heroes’ Square, and the moving “Shoes on the Danube Bank” memorial. That evening, we gathered for our final dinner onboard - reflecting on an incredible week filled with beautiful places, amazing food, and even better company.

As we prepared to head home the next day, we all felt the same mix of emotions. We missed our families and couldn’t wait to see them, but it was hard to leave behind such unforgettable experiences and friendships.

I never know what to expect when I arrive at a new destination. Sailrock South Caicos is where luxury and wilderness meet.  I settle into my beachfront villa quickly so as to answer the call of the ocean. The salt-twisted and unruly sea grape presses close against the terrace doing exactly as it pleases. The scrub beyond it grows in whatever direction the wind has decided, conch shells litter the landscape. As I stroll along the water’s edge, I cannot dismiss the feeling that I am being watched by everything on the land and in the sea. Much to my surprise a family of donkeys, a living tribute to the salt harvests of years past, emerge from it all with a confidence of creatures who inherited this island and have make it their personal playground.  Nobody puts the donkeys in the brochure, yet there they were unannounced and unbothered by the stresses of our world, inviting me to see into theirs.

Sailrock South Caicos is not a resort that has imposed itself upon the landscape of the 770 private acres of peninsula perfectly positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caicos Bank, this is luxury blended with nature not as an aesthetic choice but as a founding principle. Sailrock South Caicos occupies a peninsula of almost unreasonable geographic fortune. The Caicos Bank, one of the world’s largest shallow water plateaus, spreads westward in every shade of turquoise, jade, and seafoam green that exists, as far as I can determine, nowhere else on earth. Meanwhile, to the east, the Atlantic offers a pale aquamarine at the shallow water’s edge that drops into the cobalt blue abyssal of the Turks Passage, deep enough to offer respite to the humpback whales that migrate here from late January to early April both to breed and give birth.

Charter a boating adventure into the deep Atlantic waters. Find Starfish Alley and stand among the gathered red, yellow, and green sea stars in the warm, clear shallows. Hunt for sand dollars along the tide line with the focused joy of a child who has not yet learned to be too busy for small miracles. Make your way to Iguana Island, where the iguanas, utterly unbothered by your arrival, watch from their limestone perches with one slow, prehistoric eye.

Slip a kayak into the Caicos Bank and paddle out across a stillness so complete the water seems sacred.  The only sounds that accompany you on your voyage are the gentle winds and your breath. Stop to walk the sandbar where warm sands shift underfoot as the water barely whispers at your ankles. It is as if the sky meets the sea in every direction and that you are standing inside the horizon itself.

Explore the island’s interior by off-road vehicle, the scrub giving way to salt flats and unexpected vistas that remind you how wild and unspoiled this place truly remains. When the day calls you inward, step onto the outdoor yoga platform as the sun lifts over the Atlantic.

A visit to Paris Baguette turns an ordinary coffee stop into a delicious little adventure.

There are some places that invite you to stop in quickly, grab what you need and be on your way.

Paris Baguette is not one of those places.

Here, the experience begins the moment you walk through the door and see the pastry cases — rows and rows of them, filled with close to 100 different pastries, breads, savories and sweets. Guests walk the cases, tray in hand, choosing for themselves from an assortment that feels part bakery, part café and part little adventure.

“I often overhear guests saying, ‘Wow, it’s so hard to choose!’” says owner Kimberly O’Dell.

And that, really, is part of the magic.

Among the bakery café’s most-loved items are the Twist Donut, a light and fluffy yeast donut coated in sugar, and the Ham and Cheese Pastry, a buttery, flaky pastry filled with ham and cheese and topped with toasted Swiss cheese. Paris Baguette is also known for fresh sandwiches, salads and wraps, including the Harvest Grain Chicken Salad and Egg Salad, both prepared on fresh-baked breads.

And then, of course, there are the cakes.

One signature favorite is the Strawberry Soft Cream Cake, made with fluffy sponge cake, fresh fruit and Paris Baguette’s soft cream. Unlike traditional buttercream, soft cream is lightly sweetened whipped cream, giving the cake an airy texture that lets the fruit shine. CONTINUED

Paris Baguette offers the familiar favorites people may expect — buttery croissants, baguettes and fresh-baked breads — but it also invites guests to explore something new. Alongside the classics, visitors may discover crab croquettes, sticky milk buns or savory items they have never tried before. It is the kind of place where a simple coffee run can turn into a small moment of discovery.

For first-time guests, Kimberly likes to begin with a question: savory, sweet or super sweet?

Those who love something beautiful and fruitfilled may be directed toward the “pretty pastries,” such as Raspberry Fruit Bites, Very Berry Tarts or Strawberry Croissants. For guests who lean sweeter, the Croissant Donuts — flaky, croissant-style donuts filled with custard and topped with icing — are always popular. Savory fans may love the Pastry Frank, similar to a giant pigs in a blanket.

For Kimberly, bringing this little taste of Paris to the Smyrna/Vinings community has been about more than pastries and coffee. It has been about creating a neighborhood café where people feel known, welcomed and delighted — whether they are celebrating something big, meeting a friend or simply treating themselves on an ordinary afternoon.

“My favorite part of having this café is watching the joy on people’s faces as they enjoy our food,” she says.

Already, Paris Baguette has become part of local celebrations and everyday comforts. The team has created gender reveal cakes, welcomed regulars and offered what Kimberly lovingly calls “pastry happiness” to those who simply needed a bright spot in their day.

This summer, guests can also explore seasonal flavors including Blueberry Lemon, S’mores and Boursin Cheese, with new donuts, cakes, sandwiches and beverages joining the core menu.

Behind the scenes, the bakery is a daily labor of love. Team members begin arriving as early as 2 a.m. to bake and prepare fresh items for the day ahead. Paris Baguette is open every day from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., ready for early coffee runs, lunch breaks, afternoon treats and after-dinner desserts.

Hit the highway this weekend for an exhilarating trek through Georgia’s most vibrant geological wonder

When we think of exploring locally in the Smyrna and Vinings area, our minds drift to the familiar and beloved staples right in our backyard. We cycle along the Silver Comet Trail, meet friends for brunch at the Vinings Jubilee, or catch a Braves game at The Battery. It is easy to feel content within our thriving community. Yet, the true beauty of our region lies not just in the modern conveniences we enjoy every day, but in how quickly those suburban landscapes can give way to breathtaking, unexpected wonders. If you are itching for a refreshing weekend escape that feels worlds away without the hassle of a flight, it is time to pack a bag, grab a pair of boots, and head south.

Tucked away in Lumpkin, Georgia, just a comfortable two and a half hour drive down I-85, lies Providence Canyon State Park. Frequently referred to as “Georgia’s Little Grand Canyon,” this 1,003 acre geological marvel is an absolute must see for local adventurers, photographers, and families alike.

This breathtaking park carries a fascinating cautionary tale about our relationship with the land. Unlike the ancient, glacially carved canyons of the West that took centuries to form, Providence Canyon is a relatively modern creation. In the early 1800s, poor, intensive farming practices by local settlers led to severe soil erosion. Small ditches dug into the fragile topsoil quickly turned into deeper gullies whenever heavy rains fell. Within a matter of decades, the relentless power of water carved out the spectacular, deep chasms we see today. It stands simultaneously as a sobering reminder of human impact and a testament to nature’s incredible ability to turn a mistake into a masterpiece.

Stepping onto the rim of Providence Canyon for the first time is a surreal experience. The flat, pine-studded terrain of the South Georgia countryside suddenly drops away, revealing massive, dramatic chasms that plunge up to 150 feet deep. The canyon walls are a striking, multi-layered masterpiece of natural colors. Visitors are treated to an astonishing palette of deep crimson reds, soft pinks, brilliant oranges, stark whites, and delicate purples. These vibrant hues shift beautifully depending on how the Georgia sunlight filters through the trees above.

For the ultimate day trip experience, plan to arrive at the park by late morning to beat the midday heat and the afternoon crowds. After stopping by the visitor center to grab a map, you will want to head straight for the trails.

The park features a popular 2.5 mile Canyon Loop Trail, which is rated easy-to-moderate and takes roughly two hours to complete. The trail begins with a short, scenic walk along the rim, offering sweeping, panoramic views, and a perfect spot to whip out your camera. From there, the path descends steeply down into the canyon floor.

Once you reach the bottom, the environment changes completely, as if you walked straight onto a Sci-Fi set. You will find yourself walking through cool, shaded creek beds that lead directly into the heart of nine distinct canyon fingers. Canyons four and five are widely considered the most dramatic and photogenic, featuring towering walls that make you feel beautifully small.

Because the canyon was formed by water erosion, the canyon floor remains constantly wet and muddy, even during dry spells. The soil behaves almost like quicksand in certain spots along the edges. It is highly recommended to wear waterproof hiking boots or older athletic shoes that you do not mind getting dirty. Remember, the canyon walls are actively eroding and highly fragile; climbing them or carving into the soft clay is strictly forbidden and heavily monitored by park rangers.

If you are looking to extend your day trip, the area has plenty more to offer. Plant lovers should keep a sharp eye out for the rare Plumleaf Azalea, which thrives naturally inside the canyon. While traditional azaleas bloom in the spring, this vibrant orange-red flower uniquely showcases its brilliant petals during the peak summer months of July and August.

For lunch, pack a picnic, or grab a Pub Sub before you enter the park, to enjoy at one of the park’s shaded pavilions. You can also take a short 15-minute drive over to Florence Marina State Park. Located right on the banks of Lake Walter F. George, it is a serene spot to rest by the water, watch local boats, or even rent a kayak.

As the afternoon light softens across the clay walls, it is time to pack up the car and make the easy drive back up North towards Atlanta. There is a specific kind of magic that comes with a great day trip, the feeling of being entirely transported to another world, only to watch the familiar, welcoming skyline of home rise up to meet you just a few hours later.
