LIFESTYLE LETTER
Here's to New Adventures: A Letter from the Editor Dear Readers, In a world where everything seems to be neatly scheduled and accounted for, it’s easy to forget that some of the best moments happen when we step away from the to-do lists. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much we all need a little room to wander—a chance to go off-script and let curiosity lead the way. This month’s issue is all about the spirit of exploration. You’ll find it in Councilman Travis Lindley’s inspiring journey to visit 50 countries and all seven continents by the time he turned 50. You’ll feel it in the painted fire hydrants of Smyrna’s ARTery Project, bringing a spark of color to our daily walks along Atlanta Road. And you’ll taste it at Hokido Japanese Restaurant, where every dish feels like a mini adventure of its own. I recently had my own “explore” moment -- grabbing a dear friend and heading out for a girls’ weekend in LaGrange. Just an hour and a half from home, this charming town surprised me with its blend of history, hospitality, and small-town magic. It was a simple trip, but it left me feeling refreshed and reminded me that exploration doesn’t always need a faraway destination. Even closer to home, I’m inspired by the neighbors who turned a vacant lot into a thriving community garden. In this patch of earth, they’re not just growing vegetables—they’re growing friendships and sharing stories over garden beds. And of course, there’s the joyful chaos of Burke and Heather Scott’s spring break adventure with their seven kids, a testament to the fact that the best memories often bloom from a little bit of chaos and a lot of love. So, here’s to the beauty of wandering—whether it’s across the world or just down the block. This month, I hope you give yourself permission to set aside the lists and schedules, to take the scenic route and let yourself get delightfully, wonderfully lost. Happy exploring!

SMALL BUSINESS INSIDER

What is a Registered Agent? A registered agent is a person or entity who is available during normal business hours to receive Service of Process (delivery of legal documents). In most cases, documents are delivered by a process server, marshal or sheriff. In rare cases, legal documents are received by mail from attorney’s, courts, or the GA Secretary of State (SOS). Upon receipt, the registered agent’s job is to transfer the documents to the recipient business owner. The document transfer can be done via scan and email, pickup by client, or forwarded. A Registered Agent is required for businesses that are formed as independent legal entities. This means, if you legally form your business as an LLC, Inc., Corp, LLP, LLLP you must provide to the GA Secretary of State (SOS) your registered agents name, address, county and email. A business hires a registered agent independently (lowest cost), or it can be provided by the business formation services (high cost), or sometimes attorneys provide the service (highest cost). Georgia state law allows a business owner to list your personal name as the legal registered agent at your home address. I certainly don’t advise being your own registered agent! Putting your home address on a public business filing is not recommended, since you will end up with clients showing up at your home. No matter how well you run your business, there will always be that crazy person that doesn’t read anything and is upset with your business, and shows up angry on your doorstep one night. New businesses often end up using the registered agent associated with the service that helped them form their legal entity. That service is sometimes advertised as free for the 1st year. Of course, they never mention what the price is the next year, or the year thereafter. What starts as free typically jumps to around $200-$250 in year 2 and beyond. Busy business owners forget to cancel the free registered agent service and end up paying the high renewal price. That is where those services make their money. That is an outrageously high price to pay for registered agent services, when TRUE Space offers that service for just $24/year. You can definitely set up your own registered agent before forming your business entity, and provide the registered agent information to the formation service or attorney. Or even better, use TRUE Space’s lowcost full-service business formation services. What if I used the formation service’s registered agent, how do I switch to TRUE Space? The registered agent can be updated every year when you file your entities GA SOS Annual Registration (Jan – Apr), or any time via an Amended Annual Registration filing. The process is Step 1) Sign up with your new registered agent, Step 2) Update your state filing (We can help with that if needed), Step 3) Cancel your former registered agent service. We would love to be your new registered agent! At TRUE Space we pride ourselves as being business friendly. We offer top tier service at low prices. We are both Georgia’s #1 Registered Agent Service and #1 Virtual Office Service. Unlike the big formation service companies, when using TRUE Space to form your LLC or corporation, you get hands on service working with one of our corporate formation specialists.

Reveille in Rondeaux Revealed
Acoustic magic and a military bugle tradition from an airbase named after Marietta’s fallen World War II hero

As the glow of the morning Sun illuminates and casts shadows pointing westward over our village, and precisely as the Smyrna Community Center clock starts its own musical tradition, readers of this magazine are awakened by a fusillade of brassy notes from beyond the northern horizon, the traditional bugler’s call known as Reveille. Jaunty, peppy, perhaps more caffeinated than a human has a right to be at that hour, the instantly recognizable Reveille sails across the Marietta, Smyrna, and Vinings landscape from a trio of loudspeakers atop a very high pole, greatly amplified by equipment at half height, located five miles by car from Smyrna City Hall, or two miles as the cargo plane flies, to Dobbins US Air Reserve Base, home of the 94th US Air Lift Reserve, formerly Marietta Army Air base. You are listening to the Giant Voice System, in service from the same location in one form or another, activated the previous century for broadcasting audio messages that must be communicated en masse. This musical tradition, 44 seconds long in the key of D, has rustled soldiers out of their cots for centuries, the very name being from the French infinitive ‘reveiller’, to awaken. While civilians may CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SMYR N AV I N I N G S

be pouring the day’s first mug of coffee, those in uniform at Dobbins are saluting the flag as it ascends, civilians on the property have right hands over hearts, drivers in vehicles will stop, out of respect for the flag. So common was this tune to soldiers of World War II, a film version, sung by the Andrews Sisters in 1941, is said to have reached #6 on the US pop singles chart. The reader is encouraged to download and listen to ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ for its iconic 1940’s swing, clever lyrics, and airtight harmony. As our local version finishes, the Community Center clock informs us that 8am has arrived again. That’s 0800 to you, soldier, where the mission of the 94th is to develop Airmen able to meet Joint Force warfighting demands anywhere, at any time, regardless of the time of day, or bugler calls. What the Giant Voice speaks, however, is not always exactly what our small ears hear. When the atmospherics are so inclined, and one is physically positioned between our town’s buildings and homes in just the right way,

one can hear both the original bugler in one ear, and a second, slightly delayed perfectly mimicked second bugler in syncopated rondo, or what the French call rondeaux, in the other ear. The illusion of two buglers is caused by an intriguingly named atmospheric phenomenon known as an acoustic shadow. The air we breathe plays tricks on our senses again, as it does for our eyes when we see shimmering pools of water on hot Georgia roads always just out of reach. The conditions for the audio version of this legerdemain are complex and transitory and therefore unpredictable, but the effect is entertaining and worth a break in our day to pause and enjoy. While contemplating this acoustic phenomenon, residents have an opportunity to pay their own respects to the active-duty soldiers and airmen serving our country under the shadow of the Giant Voice System in general, and in particular to Capt. Andrew Dobbins of Marietta, who would certainly have awakened to the bugle call, danced to the Andrews Sister’s version, and who flew his distinctive and beautiful C-47, predecessor to the giant C-130H transport planes we see in our skies today, into combat near Sicily, not to return from his third and last mission, this month, that July day, in 1943. Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle sincerely thanks Major Stephani Shafer (94th US AirLift Wing), Major Amanda Russell (US Army), and William Cox (Georgia Department of Defense) for their invaluable assistance and insights on the Giant Voice System, which made this article possible.
“An acoustic shadow caused a cannonade during the Battle of Gettysburg to be heard 150 miles away, but not by citizens only ten miles away.” Major Amanda Russell, Georgia Army National Guard JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SMYR N AV I N I N G S

“ I c a l le d it my ‘5 0 by 5 0,’ but it ’s re a l l y a b out wo n d e r a n d c o n n e c t io n .”
For Councilman Travis Lindley, turning 50 wasn’t about slowing down -- it was about going everywhere. On his milestone birthday last December, Travis completed a self-made bucket list that had taken him across 50 countries, all seven continents, all 50 states, and a majority of the U.S. National Parks. He calls it his “50 by 50,” but to hear him tell it, it’s really a story about wonder, community, and a deep appreciation for home. Travis’ passion for exploration didn’t come out of nowhere. A second-generation Smyrna native, he has always been proud of his roots in the community. He grew up in Ward 3, graduated from Campbell High School, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 88 back in 1991. Later, Travis earned a Communications degree from the University of West Georgia. And today, he’s a small business owner and civic leader, dedicated to keeping Smyrna thriving. But his adventurous spirit has also pulled him far beyond Cobb County, across oceans and into some of the most breathtaking corners of the world.

It was a college art history trip across Europe -- Czech Republic, Austria, France, and England -- that planted the seed for Travis’ future adventures. “Our first city was Prague,” he says. “It was an amazing journey back in time to old world Europe.” That first taste of international travel opened the door to a lifelong love of discovery. Over the years, Travis realized he had nearly reached a milestone without even trying -- almost 40 countries under his belt. “Since turning 40, I told friends and family I would see all 50 states and visit all seven continents by my 50th birthday,” he explains. “I realized I
was already close to 40 countries, so I set my sights on 50 countries and as many national parks as possible. That’s how ‘50 by 50’ was born.”
A WORLD OF SURPRISES
The road to 50 wasn’t always smooth -- and that’s what made it fun. Travis lights up when recalling his most surprising adventure: a safari in South Africa and Botswana. “We didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the best trips,” he says. “The scenery, the people, the animals -- amazing. And you quickly realize you do exactly what you’re told, or you might become a meal!” he jokes. The tales don’t stop there. Like the time he and a friend found themselves stuck between a pride of lions and the safety fence outside a pool in Botswana -- “A tense few minutes, but the lions wandered on,” he laughs. Or the misadventure at Victoria Falls, where a troop of monkeys launched a daring raid on high tea, stealing trays of sweets and scaling the hotel roof in triumph. There was even a brush with an arctic hurricane while traveling from Canada to Greenland and Iceland. “It meant a night of wild waves, wind, and fury,” Travis says. “But it’s a grand tale now.”
THE HEART OF TRAVEL
For all the close calls and funny stories, some moments stand apart. Like his first visit to the Holy Land -- walking the Via Dolorosa and standing in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher as sunlight streamed in and his favorite hymn, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” played on the organ. “It’s a moment I’ll never forget,” he says. Or the unforgettable journey to Antarctica -- his most cherished memory of all. “If I could bottle up one travel memory and share it with Smyrna, it would be Antarctica,” he says. “The unmatched beauty, the animals that endure so much, the vastness -- it was the trip of a lifetime.”
HOME SWEET SMYRNA
For all his wanderlust, Travis says there’s nothing like coming home to Smyrna. “Travel has allowed me to
experience so many diverse cultures and people, and it’s shown me how blessed we are to live here,” he reflects. “Smyrna is my home, and it’s always good to come back to our wonderful community and city.” As a councilman and community leader, Travis brings those global perspectives back to his work. “Seeing the world has shaped the way I see Smyrna,” he says. “It’s about appreciating the small things, valuing connections, and remembering that we’re all neighbors in this great big world.” CONTINUED >

MORE ADVENTURES AHEAD
So, what’s next for someone who’s seen the Roman Colosseum, the Great Pyramids, Petra, Victoria Falls, Machu Picchu, and the farthest reaches of Antarctica? More lists, of course! “I’m already working on the next set,” Travis says with a smile. “I’d love to visit the balance of the U.S. National Parks. I want to visit every major league baseball stadium and see a game. And I’m aiming to visit 100 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.” This year alone, he has plans to explore the Galapagos Islands, China, South Korea, and Japan. For Travis Lindley, the magic of travel isn’t just about checking off a list -- it’s about the stories, the connections, and the deep sense of wonder that comes with

each new adventure. “I called it my ‘50 by 50,’” he says, “but really, it’s about opening yourself up to the world -- and then bringing those lessons back home.”
A LESSON FOR ALL OF US
Travis’ story is more than a personal milestone -- it’s an invitation to rediscover our own sense of wonder. Whether it’s the view from Antarctica or the warm glow of Smyrna’s community, his journey reminds us that there’s a whole world out there, just waiting to be seen. As you’re making your own summer plans, Travis’ story is a perfect reminder: there’s a great, big world out there waiting to be explored. Whether you’re wandering across continents or discovering the treasures of our own city, the journey is always worth it.

Neighbors gather to grow vegetables— and friendships—in Williams Park’s new community garden.
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACEY SCOTT
Something beautiful is sprouting in Williams Park -- and it’s not just the vegetables. The newly formed Spring Creek Garden Club is nurturing a vibrant blend of community, curiosity, and creativity, bringing together neighbors who might not have otherwise crossed paths. Robert Harrison, the green-thumbed visionary behind the club, was inspired by a simple desire: to rebuild the sense of connection that had been lost during the pandemic. “Williams Park has a history of being a socially active neighborhood,” he says. “With the purchase of the church property, I saw an opportunity to bring people together in a fresh, meaningful way.” And thus, the seeds of the Spring Creek Garden Club were sown. The inaugural season has already exceeded expectations, thanks in part to Mother Nature’s generous helpings of rain. “With all of the free water we’ve received,” Robert laughs, “the garden filled in even quicker than I expected. The squash and cucumbers seem to be on a mission!” But beyond the vegetables, it’s the colorful personalities of the gardeners themselves that make this garden truly special. Robert encouraged everyone to add a touch of art and creativity to their plots, turning the space into a vibrant patchwork of green growth and personal expression. “There’s a wonderful mix of experienced gardeners and people who are just dipping their toes in the dirt for the first time,” Robert says. “It’s been fun to watch folks share tips, trade seeds, and learn from one another.” As herbs flourish and tomatoes ripen, new friendships are growing right alongside them. For now, the garden club is focused on serving the Williams Park neighborhood, but there’s hope it might expand to include more of Smyrna’s residents in the future. The garden lives on the campus of the Old Smyrna Firehouse, soon to be joined by the Spring Art Studios -- another sign of the area’s lively spirit. If you’re feeling inspired to join in or just curious about what’s sprouting, reach out to Robert at Robert@ Flamewerx.com. After all, the Spring Creek Garden Club isn’t just about growing vegetables -- it’s about planting the seeds of connection and watching them bloom. CONTINUED >

Life has a way of filling up fast -- between work, kids, and endless to-do lists, it can be tough to find time to just … breathe. Recently, I decided to press pause on all that busyness and whisked my dear friend Heather Klinzing away for a much-needed girls’ weekend in LaGrange, Georgia. Let me tell you -- it was exactly the break we needed. LaGrange is one of those hidden gems that’s practically in our backyard -- just about an hour and a half from Smyrna Vinings, but it feels like a world away. We arrived on a sunny Friday afternoon and were instantly charmed by the town’s laid-back vibe and rich history. Lafayette Square, right outside our hotel, set the perfect scene: historic buildings, friendly faces, and plenty of adorable shops just begging us to wander in. One of our first stops was Elliebelle’s (131 Bull St.), a sweet little boutique brimming with fun finds -- think cute clothes, accessories, and the kind of staff that greets you like an old friend. After exploring the square, we set our sights on dinner at Tutto Pepe (700 Lincoln St.). This Italian gem, perched above Beacon Brewing, is new to LaGrange (it opened in February 2024), but you’d swear it’s been there forever. The vibe? Warm, sophisticated, and cozy all at once. Our server, Courtney, was an absolute delight -- she told us all about the house-made pastas and traditional Italian flavors on the menu. From the perfectly crisp bruschetta to the rich short rib ragu, everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Oh, and don’t even get me started on the cannolis -- truly the perfect ending to a fantastic meal. Saturday morning started bright and early with coffee at Gus’s Grill (110 Greenville St.), where the aroma alone was enough to wake us up. We had a yoga class to catch at the Center for Mindful Exploration (8 Garfield St.), and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. Jennifer, our instructor, had such a calming presence and made sure everyone felt comfortable, no matter their experience level. We left feeling refreshed and ready to dive into more LaGrange fun. Hills & Dales Estate Hills & Dales Estate
And we did just that! Next up was Hills and Dales Estate (1916 Hills and Dales Dr.), an absolute treasure trove of history and beauty. This Italian villa-style home, designed by the renowned architects Neel Reid and Hal Hentz, was built in 1916 for textile magnate Fuller Earle Callaway and his wife, Ida. Our docent, Sarah, shared fascinating stories about the Callaway family and the home’s stunning details. Every room was filled with the family’s original furnishings and fresh floral arrangements that made it feel so warm and alive. And the gardens? Absolutely breathtaking. We wandered through them, feeling like we’d stepped back in time. After our elegant tour, we were ready for something a little more down-toearth -- like a really good hot dog! Charlie Joseph’s (128 Bull St.) was the perfect spot. This local institution has been slinging hot dogs since 1920, and sitting at the counter with an ice-cold Coke in hand felt downright nostalgic. The walls, covered in Coca-Cola memorabilia, were a trip down memory lane in themselves.

“From f reshmade pasta to charming antique shops, LaG ra nge capt ured our hearts and re min d ed us of the joy in taking a l i t t l e t i m e fo r o u r s e l v e s .” The rest of the afternoon was all about exploring. We popped into the Legacy Museum on Main (136 Main St.), where we soaked up LaGrange’s fascinating history, from ancient artifacts to modern milestones. And of course, we couldn’t resist a bit more shopping! The Marketplace at Lafayette Square (100 Bull St.) was a wonderland of antiques -- I Lafayette Square found a few keepsakes I couldn’t pass up. Emberglow (2 East Lafayette Square) was another favorite, with its unique mix of locally made treasures and handmade goods. Pretty Good Books (118 Church St.) was the final stop of the afternoon -- a cozy spot filled with all kinds of titles, from fiction to poetry. For dinner that night, we settled in at Venucci (129 Main St.), a charming downtown spot that made for the perfect end to our Saturday. We lingered over delicious dishes and a glass of wine, swapping stories and reliving all the day’s adventures. Sunday morning, we took things nice and slow, savoring a leisurely brunch at Nutwood Winery Downtown (300 Main St.). We sat outside, soaking up the sunshine and sipping mimosas while the town slowly woke up around us. After brunch, we took a stroll on The Thread, LaGrange’s 14-mile multipurpose trail that weaves through town and connects its parks and attractions. We didn’t make it the whole 14 miles (maybe next time!), but we loved seeing more of LaGrange’s natural beauty. LaGrange was everything we hoped for -- warm, welcoming, and full of surprises. Heather and I are already talking about our next trip back. If you’re looking for a quick getaway that feels worlds away without actually being far, LaGrange is your answer. It’s just waiting to be explored.

At Hokido, dining is more than just a meal—it’s a journey into Japanese culture. Twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the kitchen receives shipments directly from Tokyo’s famed Tsukiji Market. These fresh fish selections, often based on Japan’s seasonal harvests, are the cornerstone of Hokido’s evolving menu. From delicate slices of bluefin tuna to rare, rotating offerings, the quality rivals top spots in Buckhead or Midtown—without the traffic. Favorites include the Kobe Wagyu Beef, seared tableside before melting in your mouth, and the signature Bluefin Tuna Platter, which showcases each part of the fish in a way that encourages anyone to take a bite. True to its roots, Hokido also honors tradition. Alongside its creative sushi, the restaurant features a curated selection of Japanese sake, with plans to introduce a premium collection of Japanese whiskies once their full liquor license is approved. Beer and wine are already available for classic pairings. Soon, guests will also be able to enjoy hand-prepared Japanese green tea, made at their table using imported equipment. This interactive experience will complement Hokido’s anticipated green tea tiramisu, a homemade dessert that blends elegance with innovation. Hokido’s omakase option offers an intimate, chef-curated dining experience that’s perfect for a date night or girls night out. Designed for a minimum of two guests, the omakase invites diners to embark on a culinary journey where the courses are never the same. This tasting menu is guaranteed to turn your meal into a memorable event. Whether you’re a seasoned sushi lover or simply looking to try something new, Hokido invites you to explore the tastes and traditions of Japan right here in Smyrna. With fresh ingredients flown in from Japan, a thoughtful blend of modern and classic dishes, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, Hokido is more than a restaurant—it’s a cultural experience. Come for the flavor, stay for the journey.

We kicked things off at Pirates Inn, a budget-friendly, bunk bed-filled ex-hostel that had strong “college dorm meets pirate cosplay” energy. Our host Jesse from Brazil, part pirate/part pancake whisperer, whipped up breakfast each morning like a culinary magician with a spatula. We strolled to Castillo de San Marcos (very old, very sturdy), the Lightner Museum (fancy), and historic streets where we admired architecture while desperately counting heads. Pro tip: OC Whites = live music + seafood; Casa Maya = where Latin flavors and parental sanity meet.
JEKYLL ISLAND DETOUR:
We pit-stopped at the Sea Turtle Center, where we learned about turtles and instantly wished we could nap like them. Driftwood Beach offered scenic views and the perfect backdrop for yelling “Don’t climb that!” every 30 seconds. Lunch was Larry’s Giant Subs—we ordered four sandwiches and fed nine people. Math? We don’t know her.
ST. SIMONS ISLAND:
Best Western = pool, hot tub, and clean towels we used to mop up kid-related chaos. The trolley tour was equal parts history and “please sit still.” Highlights included the lighthouse museum and beach walks that turned into seashell hoarding missions. Barbara Jean’s served true Southern comfort food. Iguana’s won the kids’ MVP for the unlimited soft serve (because who needs actual nutrition on vacation?).
SAVANNAH:
Checked into SpringHill Suites and immediately began walking everywhere because: charming squares, Spanish moss, and exactly zero parking. Trolley tours made us feel educated, the haunted one made us laugh-snort. Weather? A dreamy 79°F. We capped off the trip at Fire Street Food Where Asian fusion met travel exhaustion. On our last day there I ditched the kids at the hotel and took the wife to Myrtle & Rose rooftop bar on River Street to enjoy the views and plan our next family trip! Final tally: 3 cities, 2 hotel rooms at each, 7 kids, 1 haunted trolley, and approximately 84 pancakes. Would we do it again? Ask us in a year… after we finish the laundry.

Pennington’s Pen If you read your New Testament carefully, you will discover the beautiful redundancy of the subject of joy. In Philippians 3:1, Paul writes: “Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.” And then, only one chapter later, the motif is revisited: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.” When we feel overwhelmed and burdened, it is easy for us to act as if life is grueling, grinding, and grudging. But what if, in the face of your darkest and most difficult days, you can still find plenty of fuel for gladness? George Guthrie writes about a Nigerian pastor, named Sunday Gomna, who stood before his bewildered congregation after their church building had been burned to the ground by extremists. Not long thereafter, the church gathered in a little mud-wall community center not far from the smoldering ruins. Pastor Sunday begged God to give him the right words to say. “First, I am grateful that no one in my church killed anyone.” In the face of such injustice, it is common to respond with vengeance, but a Christ-driven love for others empowered their restraint. “Second, I am grateful they did not burn my church.” The burning smells of their former place of worship left the group incredulous, but the pastor went on to explain: “They did not burn the church. They only burned the building. We can rebuild the building, but we could not bring back to life any of our members. So, I am grateful that they did not burn my church.” He continued: “Third, I am grateful that they burned my house as well.” He had been living in a house the church provided for their pastor, and it too was burned, along with the main building, with everything in it. Pastor Sunday then explained: “If they had burned your house, and not my house, how would I have known how to serve you as pastor? However, because they burned my house and all my possessions, I know what you are experiencing, and I will be able to be a better pastor to you. So, I am grateful that they burned my house as well.” If joy can transcend even these circumstances, don’t you want a piece of it? God is so powerful, that he turns the most egregious intentions and effects of evil upside down. God did this on the cross, and He has repeated this motif time and time again. Join us at Smyrna First Baptist, where we can’t help but express this unstoppable joy together.

Art in Unexpected Places: The ARTery A PLAYFUL SPLASH OF COLOR AND CREATIVITY BRIGHTENS ATLANTA ROAD IN SMYRNA. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY STACEY SCOTT
In Smyrna, art is popping up in the most unexpected places -- and it’s bringing joy to everyone who passes by. Thanks to a spirited collaboration between the City of Smyrna, the Smyrna Fire Department, and local artists, ordinary fire hydrants along Atlanta Road have been transformed into vibrant works of art. Known as The ARTery project, this colorful initiative turns the city’s streetscape into an open-air gallery that invites everyone to see our community with fresh eyes. The idea for this project came from Public Art Consultant Anna Talarico of Designing Local and quickly won the hearts of the Public Art Committee. It was spearheaded by City administration staff in collaboration with the Fire Department and Public Works -- showing the power of cross-departmental teamwork to bring creativity to life in Smyrna. Safety was a top priority, with artists donning bright vests and carefully avoiding the hydrant caps to ensure firefighters could still access them in an emergency. From there, the city coordinated closely with artists to ensure compliance while fostering creative expression. The selection of hydrants was a joint effort -- city staff and the Fire Department worked together to identify locations that would maintain safety and

add a touch of whimsy to our daily routines. Smyrna City Council Member and chair of the Public Art Committee, Rickey N. Oglesby, Jr., couldn’t be happier. “I’m thrilled by the enthusiasm from both local artists and the community,” he says. “It shows that Smyrna is not just a city, but a place that values creativity and connection.” The results are as delightful as they are diverse. From Laselle’s Cool Down to Jaliyah Nicole’s Euphoria, each hydrant has its own personality. Some are playful and bright, like Marisa Leilani’s Flowers, while others, like Patricia Hernandez’s Flow of Life, offer a moment of quiet reflection. One artist, Leah Abucayan, even painted two hydrants -- The Firefighter and Drawn to Life -- adding layers of storytelling to our sidewalks. Beyond adding color to our daily commutes, The ARTery reflects Smyrna’s broader vision for public art -- art that’s woven into our shared spaces, accessible to all, and a true reflection of the community’s soul. As Rickey N. Oglesby, Jr. shared, “This project is a great example of how art can brighten our days and build a stronger sense of pride in our city.” So next time you’re out for a walk, look down -- because in Smyrna, even a fire hydrant can spark a little joy.
