LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year, Smyrna Vinings! Dear Readers, January gets a reputation for being intense — new goals, new routines, new expectations. But this year, I’m embracing a gentler approach. Think of it as a “soft start.” Instead of overhauling everything at once, I’m asking myself a simple question: What would make my everyday life feel a little better? That question guided this issue, too. At Big Peach Running Co., feeling better might look like walking with a community that cheers you on. At Jonquil Orthodontics, it might be discovering the confidence behind a healthier smile. Wolfson Weight Loss & Wellness and Joi Life bring science-backed support for those navigating hormones, metabolism, or the complicated middle-of-life season. And Carter’s Pharmacy reminds us what it feels like to have real, local care in your wellness corner. We also included ideas for unplugging, unwinding, and finding balance in a screen-heavy world. Wellness, for me, has become less about big declarations and more about paying attention to the little things: a good night’s sleep, a walk outside, choosing rest over rushing, saying “yes” because I mean it — not because I’m on autopilot. These tiny shifts add up in a way that feels encouraging, not exhausting. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. You wouldn’t take a vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year? Absolutely. And that occasional dessert from a beloved local spot? Worth every bite. Here’s to taking a softer, more sustainable approach to the new year. One small change, one better choice, one deep breath at a time.

WHERE MOVEMENT MEETS REAL LIFE Discover how Big Peach Running Co. empowers walkers and runners to build confidence, find support, and embrace a lifestyle rooted in movement and joy.
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM

G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S
On a crisp Saturday morning in Smyrna, the world still feels quiet. Storefronts begin to wake up, the Silver Comet Trail hums with early risers, and Big Peach Running Co. is already buzzing. Music plays softly, coffee cups warm chilly hands, and a cluster of walkers and runners gathers at the door — some eager, some nervous, all welcomed with the same familiar greeting:
“Glad you’re here. You’re in the right place.” At Big Peach Running Co., belonging begins at the threshold. Whether someone walks five miles a day or hasn’t exercised in months, the team meets them where they are. And in a community as active as Smyrna/ Vinings, that approach is reshaping what movement means for people of all ages. A MISSION ROOTED IN ENCOURAGEMENT AND EXPERTISE Owner and General Manager Aisha Wallace-Wyche lights up when she talks about Big Peach’s mission: to grow, support, and celebrate a pedestrian-active lifestyle for everyone. “Everyone” isn’t a throwaway word — it guides how the store operates. Big Peach isn’t about elite athletes or competitive culture. It’s about neighbors. Parents. Weekend walkers. People rediscovering movement. Those wanting to feel healthier but unsure where to begin. “We’re committed to exceptional service, deep product knowledge, and creating a fun, welcoming space that genuinely improves the lives of our neighbors,” Aisha says. That combination — expertise plus warmth — has made Big Peach a trusted movement hub in Smyrna/Vinings.
REWRITING THE STORY: “I’M NOT A RUNNER” Spend an hour inside Big Peach and you’ll hear it more than once: I’m not a runner. To many, running feels out of reach — something reserved for the speedy or fearless. Aisha understands that hesitancy and meets it with compassion. “If you have the desire and the physical ability, you can become a runner with patience and consistency,” she says. “But you don’t have to be a runner to start moving your body.” Movement shouldn’t be intimidating — it should feel empowering. Whether someone starts with a stroll around the block or a walk/run interval on the trail, every step forward matters. That mindset — progress over perfection — is woven through everything Big Peach does. GROUP RUNS BUILT FOR REAL PEOPLE, REAL LIFE Twice a week, Big Peach opens its doors not just as a store, but as a gathering place. On Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 7:30 a.m., walkers and runners of all paces come together for routes that are equal parts energizing and encouraging. CONTINUED >

“Movement shouldn’t feel intimidating — it should feel empowering. Every step forward matters, no matter your pace, your age, or your starting point.”
28
G E T ACT IV E | FI TNES S
“No one gets left behind,” Aisha says. “I know what it feels like to be intimidated, and I never want anyone else to feel that way.” These group runs aren’t about speed — they’re about community. At least once a month, Aisha partners with local organizations and vendor brands — from travel groups and nutrition shops to footwear and gear companies — giving guests opportunities to connect, learn from experts, and test products before buying. Faster runners loop back to support those behind them. Walkers pair with newcomers. Someone always cheers at the turnaround point. No matter how far participants go, everyone finishes together — back at the store, smiling and proud. Over time, these weekly meetups have become a lifeline for many locals — a way to meet new friends, stay accountable, and build confidence step by step.
KNOWLEDGE THAT KEEPS PEOPLE MOVING SAFELY For many new movers, one obstacle appears again and again: pain. Knees that ache. Shins that throb. Feet that burn. Big Peach sees these issues often — plantar fasciitis, shin splints, knee pain — and Aisha explains they’re frequently tied to gait, pronation, and footwear that doesn’t support properly. That’s where the award-winning 4-Step Fit Process comes in. It’s complimentary, thorough, and has helped countless guests avoid injury and rediscover movement. With expert eyes, the Big Peach team studies gait mechanics, listens to concerns, and guides guests toward gear that keeps them comfortable. It’s not about selling the trendiest shoe — it’s about matching people with what truly works for their movement patterns.
The right fit, Aisha says, can turn movement from something dreaded into something genuinely enjoyable. A NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW RUNNERS, NEW GOALS, AND NEW ADVENTURES As January approaches, Big Peach sees an annual surge of hope and ambition. Runners return after time away. First-timers ask about their first 5K. Neighborhoods form new run clubs. People lean toward movement as a way to reset and re-energize after the holidays. One of the biggest trends Aisha has noticed is the rise of racecations — destination races that turn fitness into adventure. Whether it’s Disney, Chicago, Savannah, Asheville, or beyond, runners are seeking memorable courses and turning them into mini-getaways. Big Peach often becomes the first stop on those journeys, helping guests train smart and start strong. WHY SMYRNA/VININGS FEELS LIKE THE PERFECT FIT What sets this community apart, Aisha says, is its generosity of spirit. “This community is incredibly welcoming,
collaborative, and creative,” she shares. “Everyone shows up ready to partner and support one another.” The beloved Silver Comet Trail only strengthens that connection. Stretching through Smyrna/Vinings and beyond, it’s a movement playground where families, cyclists, dog-walkers, and marathoners all share the same path. “We’re lucky to have the Silver Comet right in our backyard,” Aisha says. “It brings people together in a really special way.” SMALL STEPS, BIG IMPACT: TIPS FOR MOVING MORE IN 2026 Movement doesn’t require a grand gesture — or a complete schedule overhaul. Aisha’s advice is refreshingly simple: • Give yourself grace. You’re building habits, not chasing perfection. • Start small. A ten-minute walk counts. • Focus on progress. Your only competition is the person you were yesterday. • Build gradually. Add one or two habits at a time. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SMYR N AV I N I N G S

Movement should feel like nourishment, not pressure. And at Big Peach, that’s exactly the environment they cultivate.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR BIG PEACH RUNNING CO.
Aisha hints that more is coming. Monthly events, fresh gear launches, community gatherings, and new partnerships are all ahead. For updates, she encourages everyone to follow Big Peach Running Co. Vinings on social media — where they regularly share events, new arrivals, and ways to get involved.
A PLACE WHERE EVERY STEP MATTERS
Back at the store, the Saturday group lines up before heading out. A new participant takes a breath and admits she’s nervous. Another runner smiles and says, “Stick with me — we’ve all been there.” A small exchange becomes a reminder that movement isn’t about distance or pace. It’s about connection. Courage. Choosing to show up. At Big Peach Running Co., every step — big or small — is celebrated. In Smyrna/Vinings, movement is becoming a way of life, and Big Peach is helping lead the way, one supportive stride at a time. With a new home and renewed energy, Carter’s blends modern convenience with longtime Smyrna-centered care.
A New Chapter for Carter’s Pharmacy ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY PUTNAM
In a city that’s constantly evolving, there’s something comforting about a small business with staying power. For six decades, Carter’s Pharmacy has been part of Smyrna’s story — sometimes front and center, sometimes quietly supporting families behind the scenes — always rooted in personal care and a hometown approach to wellness. Now, after nearly 15 years on the Ridgeview Institute campus, Carter’s is beginning a fresh chapter, returning to a more visible location on Atlanta Road and reintroducing itself to longtime patients and new neighbors alike.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
Carter’s Pharmacy first opened under the leadership of Dan Carter, who originally operated the business on South Cobb Drive, serving families with dependable, neighborly care. When Dan retired, he sold the pharmacy to Dr. Steve Wilson, who spent decades caring for Smyrna residents and became a steady, reassuring presence behind the counter. For Austin Tull, Steve’s stepson, Carter’s was woven into daily life. He grew up in the aisles, helped out when he could, and absorbed the natural rhythms of a neighborhood pharmacy. He remembers summers with a lemonade stand out front and sick days resting on a small cot in the back room while the store hummed around him. Those memories shaped his appreciation for what a community pharmacy can mean. When Dr. Wilson retired last year, the transition felt natural: Austin and his longtime friend, Thomas Sherrer, stepped in to carry the business forward. Both grew up in independent pharmacies, and today they are business partners with a shared commitment to community-centered care.
A MEANINGFUL MOVE INTO EVERYDAY VIEW
Though Carter’s never stopped serving patients, its location at Ridgeview placed it out of sight for many Smyrna residents. The decision to move to Atlanta Road was intentional — grounded in visibility, convenience, and a desire to reconnect. “We wanted to be easier for people to find,” Austin explains. “This move gives us the access we’ve been missing. It feels like the right time to reconnect with the community in a more intentional way.”
VISIT CARTER’S PHARMACY
The new location allows Carter’s to function the way neighborhood pharmacies traditionally do — as a convenient, street-front stop that fits naturally into daily routines.
TRADITION WITH THOUGHTFUL UPGRADES
The reopening brings a blend of familiar service and meaningful enhancements designed around patient needs. The most noticeable update is the new drive-thru window, offering quick, convenient prescription pick-up — especially helpful for busy families, seniors, and anyone who prefers a faster option. Inside, the pharmacy is expanding its focus on proactive wellness with a curated selection of high-quality supplements and vitamins. Austin says this shift grew directly from conversations with patients. “Many people were turning to online retailers but weren’t always sure what they were getting,” he explains. “We wanted to offer trusted, premium products — paired with guidance from a pharmacist who knows your health history.”
PERSONAL CARE AT THE CENTER
Even as Carter’s adds modern conveniences, the heart of the business remains the same: meaningful, personal care. “Our pharmacists live here,” Austin says. “We understand the needs of our neighbors because we’re part of the community, too.” That familiarity shapes every interaction — whether helping a patient navigate a new medication, recommending a supplement that fits their wellness goals, or simply taking the time to listen. Carter’s strives to create an experience rooted in trust and

connection, the kind of care that’s increasingly rare in larger chain settings.
LOOKING AHEAD
As Carter’s settles into its refreshed home on Atlanta Road, the team is already preparing for what’s next. In 2026, the pharmacy will introduce a delivery program, offering at-home access to prescriptions and supplements for patients who need flexible options. Carter’s is also strengthening relationships with local treatment programs, assisted-living communities, and hospice providers to ensure consistent, reliable support across a range of healthcare needs. The vision is simple: be a trusted resource — not just a place to pick up medications, but a partner in everyday wellness.
A HOMECOMING FILLED WITH HEART
As Austin reflects on his years growing up behind the counter, he smiles at the memories that shaped his connection to the business — the familiar routines, the friendly faces, and the sense of belonging that came from spending his childhood in a place dedicated to helping others. Today, as he and Thomas guide Carter’s Pharmacy into its next era, they’re carrying forward the values that have quietly defined the business for sixty years: kindness, personal connection, and care rooted in community. Their move to Atlanta Road feels less like a relaunch and more like a homecoming — a chance to reintroduce a familiar name with fresh energy and a renewed commitment to the people they serve.
“Our goal is simple: to be the kind of pharmacy families rely on, feel good about, and return to again and again.” Carter's Original Sign

Laugh It Off! The comedians and creators bringing new energy, joy, and healing to Smyrna— one shared laugh at a time. There’s a moment — the kind that sneaks up on you — when something strikes you as so unexpectedly funny that you laugh before you can help it. Maybe you were tired, stressed, or carrying the invisible weight of the day, and suddenly there it is: pure, involuntary joy. A quick, bright exhale. An unexpected shift. We underestimate how healing that can be. In a season filled with resolutions and wellness resets, there’s something beautifully simple about gathering with others and sharing an unpolished, wholehearted laugh. And right here in Smyrna, a growing network
of comedians, beginners, and brave creative souls is reminding us that comedy isn’t just entertainment — it’s connection, confidence-building, and emotional relief all rolled into one. At the center of this movement is KOS (Knowledge of Self ), Inc., the nonprofit founded by Elaine Friend and her husband, James Smith. A place long beloved for empowering kids through hands-on learning, KOS has also become one of Smyrna’s most meaningful spaces for adults — thanks to a twice-monthly gathering called the Comedy Writer’s Room.

A SPACE WHERE EVERYONE IS CHEERING FOR YOU
KOS’s mission has always been clear: building confidence through knowledge. For years, that mission lived in their camps where kids learned carpentry, sewing, STEM, art, and theatre. But after hosting monthly stand-up shows beginning in 2022, Elaine and her team noticed something important: people were craving community. Comedy was fun — but competitive. People didn’t just want to perform; they wanted to belong. So in early 2024, KOS created the Comedy Writer’s Room: a supportive, collaborative workshop where comics of all experience levels gather to test material, learn from rotating instructors, and cheer each other on. “We wanted a community, not a competition,” Elaine explains. “A place where people could work together, support each other, and really find their voice.” The format is simple but powerful. Each session starts with “church announcements,” where participants celebrate wins — new shows, open mics, or small steps forward. Then an instructor (often a touring comic) teaches on anything from joke structure to stage presence to navigating the business side of comedy. After that, each participant gets a few minutes on the mic, followed by supportive group feedback. The results are remarkable. Beginners stop hiding in the back. Regulars land their first booked shows. Some even start touring. But the most meaningful transformation is the shift in confidence — watching someone walk into the room tentative and walk out a little more certain of who they are. And with the class priced at just $5, thanks to Cobb EMC Foundation support, KOS keeps the experience accessible — a rarity and a gift.
TURNING LIFE INTO LAUGHTER
One of the most healing aspects of comedy is its honesty. Elaine describes something she sees often: “traumadey,” the way people take something difficult and shape it into something creative and funny. “Saying something out loud and hearing the room laugh…it’s cathartic,” she says. That shared laughter becomes a wellness practice all its own — a release, a reframe, a reminder that you are not alone. CONTINUED >

JESSICA IT’S ALL GOOD: A BRIGHT LIGHT IN SMYRNA’S COMEDY SCENE
A huge part of that joy is fueled by local comedian Jessica It’s All Good. A performer, DJ, emcee, and newly published author, Jessica is woven deeply into the local comedy landscape. Earlier this year she even headlined a clean comedy show in the community at Ruby’s Pizza, and it remains one of her favorite collaborations. She has performed at venues across the area, including Cumberland Community Church, and her heart for clean comedy — accessible, inclusive, and uplifting — continues to shape her work. In 2026 she’ll be performing as the headliner at the January 31st showcase and serving as the guest instructor of the Comedy Writer’s Room on March 9th.
“Wellness isn’t always quiet — sometimes it sounds like laughter.” “I subscribe to The Writer’s Room, and I prescribe it to my comedy students,” she says with a smile. “Comedy builds confidence and community. People bond over laughter — it’s medicine.” Jessica hopes people walk away from local comedy feeling lighter, more connected, and more supported. “When you’re laughing together, you’re not alone,” she says simply. And for anyone nervous about trying comedy for the first time, she offers gentle encouragement: you don’t have to be perfect — you just have to show up.
WHY LAUGHTER MATTERS RIGHT NOW
The science is clear: laughter lowers stress, boosts endorphins, strengthens immunity, and improves connection. But what’s happening inside KOS’s studio — and across Smyrna’s growing comedy scene — adds another layer. It gives people a place to show up as themselves. A place to be brave, messy, honest, and human. A place where the room cheers for you no matter what. So maybe the gentlest, most joyful wellness practice of the new year is this: Show up. Sit in the back if you want. Or take the mic. Or simply let yourself laugh — not because life is perfect, but because laughter helps you carry it. Because sometimes, laughter isn’t an escape at all. It’s a way home.

CONFIDENCE STA RTS HER E

There’s something special about a place where children feel at ease, parents feel heard, and everyone leaves smiling a little bigger than when they arrived. That spirit is at the heart of Jonquil Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, a practice built on connection, comfort, and the belief that quality care should feel good.
“We keep communication open before, during, and after every appointment so parents always feel included.” When Dr. Christian Johnson opened Jonquil Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry, she imagined a space where families could show up and naturally feel at ease. She hoped parents would feel comfortable asking questions and confident in the care their children were receiving. “I wanted parents to relax knowing their child would be well taken care of,” she says. “We keep communication open before, during, and after every appointment so parents always feel included.” That philosophy shapes the entire experience. Whether a family prefers phone calls, texts, or quiet check-ins, the team meets them where they are. Children feel supported, and parents know they’re not navigating the process alone.
THE POWER OF A SMILE
For Dr. Johnson, a smile is more than a physical feature. It’s a form of connection that doesn’t require translation. “A smile is understood globally,” she says. “It’s one of the first things we notice when interacting with someone.”
For patients who feel unsure about their smile, that uncertainty can become a barrier — not just to smiling, but to speaking up or letting their personalities shine. Helping young patients move from self-consciousness to confidence is one of the most meaningful parts of her work. “A smile exudes confidence, joy, and a sense of purpose,” she says.
THOUGHTFUL, TECH-FORWARD CARE
Inside the practice, modern tools blend with gentle, kid-centered care. Digital scanning has replaced traditional impressions — a welcome update for anyone who remembers the trays of goop. Treatment plans, whether braces or aligners, begin with a digital blueprint of each child’s teeth, allowing for a customized and intentional approach. Here, technology exists for comfort, accuracy, and clarity. It supports the work without overshadowing the personal connection happening in the chair. CONTINUED >

SUPPORTING YOUNGER PATIENTS
Treating children and teens requires its own rhythm, and Dr. Johnson and her team approach it with patience and empathy. Appointments are broken into steps and explained in language children understand. Kids are encouraged to ask questions, take breaks, or hold a parent’s hand when they need reassurance. “We want them to know exactly what’s happening and what’s coming next,” Dr. Johnson says. It’s a simple approach, but one that helps even the most anxious child feel more grounded.
A COMMUNITY THAT FEELS LIKE FAMILY
One of the joys of practicing in Smyrna, Dr. Johnson says, is the way the community feels both vibrant and close-knit. Her practice stays connected through PTA events, school programs, small business partnerships, and the Smyrna Business Association. Yet many of the sweetest moments happen in everyday encounters — running into a patient at a basketball game, hearing about an orchestra concert, or watching families chat in the waiting room. Beginning in January, families can look forward to a new quarterly contest with fun surprises for parents and kids — a lighthearted way to add joy throughout the year.
THE STORIES BEHIND THE SMILES
Because orthodontic treatment brings families back regularly, relationships grow naturally. Dr. Johnson and her team hear about tournaments, birthdays, school dances, and milestones big and small. They cheer kids on through concerts and baseball seasons. They celebrate driver’s licenses, new braces colors, and first-day-of-school photos. “We get to know the story behind the smile we’re creating,” she says. While families are thrilled when treatment wraps up, there’s often a hint of bittersweet on both sides. “We’re sad we won’t see them as frequently anymore,” she admits — a reminder of how meaningful those connections become.
THE TEAM THAT SETS THE TONE
If you ask Dr. Johnson what makes the practice feel so warm, she’ll tell you without hesitation: her team. They pay attention to personalities, comfort levels, and communication preferences. They offer extra time when needed, adjust explanations to fit each family, and remember small touches that make visits easier — even down to keeping the hot chocolate stocked at the refreshment station. “They make the magic happen,” she says. “They understand what each parent and patient needs.”
48
K I D S COR N E R | P RO FESSION AL SE RVICE S
“A smile can change how a child sees themselves, and watching that confidence grow is the part of our work we treasure most.”
A MOMENT THAT MAKES IT ALL WORTH IT
The day braces come off is a big one — not just for the patient, but for everyone in the room. Dr. Johnson loves watching a child see their new smile for the first time and the ripple of emotion that follows. “I hope they feel joy,” she says. “I want them to know they played an integral part in the success of their treatment.” The wide eyes, the laughter, the instant selfies — these are the moments that keep her inspired. For many children, the
transformation isn’t just cosmetic. It’s emotional. It’s confidence-building.
MORE THAN ORTHODONTICS
At its core, Jonquil Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry isn’t defined by technology or tools, but by connection — to patients, parents, and the community they share. It’s a place that celebrates courage, growth, and the everyday victories that happen one appointment at a time. And in a community that values togetherness, those are the kinds of smiles that matter most.

FEEL BETTER, Live Brighter: A NEW YEAR Reset A guided, approachable path to feeling well, staying strong, and living with greater intention. ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT PHOTOGRAPHY BY GERALD FORTE
Every January, people in Smyrna and Vinings make quiet promises to themselves. They buy new planners, fresh sneakers, maybe a colorful water bottle, hoping this year will feel different. Not perfect — just better. More energy. More balance. Less overwhelm. But somewhere between holiday recovery and real life, familiar questions creep in: Where do I start? Why is this so hard? Why does my body feel like it’s working against me? That’s when many people walk into Wolfson Weight Loss & Wellness — not for a quick fix, but because they’re tired of feeling disconnected from their own bodies. Owner Jeff Wolfson sees it often. “People come in believing they’ve failed,” he says. “Most of the time, their bodies have been sending signals they didn’t know how to interpret.” And that’s where a new kind of wellness story begins: not with dieting rules, but with understanding what’s happening beneath the surface.
WHEN THE BODY SPEAKS UP
For years, wellness conversations focused on willpower — eat this, not that; move more; try harder. But the body keeps its own score. Fatigue lingers. Sleep doesn’t restore. Cravings shout louder than logic. Hormones shift. Stress rises. Inflammation shapes everything. “Once someone understands their hormone levels or insulin resistance markers,” Wolfson says, “things finally make sense. It’s like turning on the lights.” Wolfson Weight Loss & Wellness begins with deeply personal steps: a 1:1 consultation, comprehensive bloodwork, body composition analysis, and a conversation about stress, sleep, habits, and the pressures of daily life. It builds a roadmap that feels personalized instead of overwhelming.

A RECONNECTION, NOT A MAKEOVER
One surprise many patients share? The first changes they notice aren’t visible on the outside. Often, they sleep better. Their mood eases. Afternoon exhaustion fades. Cravings soften. They feel mentally clearer — and more capable. With those early shifts, the process stops feeling like punishment. It starts to feel like possibility. Wolfson’s team encourages small steps — “only a few priorities at a time,” he reminds patients. Some start with walking. Others focus on sleep or hydration. Here, the goal isn’t reinvention. It’s reconnection — rebuilding a relationship with the body that feels sustainable instead of stressful. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/SMYR N AV I N I N G S

WHAT’S AHEAD IN 2026
The new year brings a thoughtful expansion of tools designed to support total wellness from multiple angles. GLP-1 medications — including semaglutide and tirzepatide — will continue playing an important role for those who need medical support with weight loss. Patients receive clear guidance on protein-rich eating and strength training to balance the impact these medications can have on lean muscle mass. There is also continued growth in bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT), giving patients insight into how shifts in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, or thyroid levels influence their sleep, mood, metabolism, and energy. Peptide therapy is stepping further into the spotlight. Beyond an expanded library of options, Wolfson is highlighting targeted peptides like NAD+, known for supporting cellular repair and recovery, and Glutathione, widely used for detoxification and inflammation reduction. Together, they offer meaningful support for long-term vitality. The clinic is also expanding its professional-grade supplement offerings, adding trusted lines such as Thorne and Pure Encapsulations to simplify the process of choosing effective, high-quality products without the confusion of online trends. Individually, each tool offers a specific benefit — but together, they’re part of a whole-person strategy that makes lasting change feel realistic and achievable.
FOR ANYONE WHO FEELS DISCOURAGED
Wolfson hears from many people who feel like they’ve “tried everything.” His message is gentle but grounding: it’s not too late. “Healthy doesn’t mean perfect,” he says. “It means feeling better in your daily life — more energy, calmer mood, clearer thinking, real confidence. We’re here to help people reach those goals.” In a season filled with pressure to reinvent, it’s a comforting reminder that wellness isn’t a race or a makeover. It’s an unfolding — a steady return to feeling like yourself again. And that is a new beginning worth stepping into.

Joi in the
Journey How Whole-Person Wellness Is Shaping 2026
ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRANDON CARTER

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | WE LLN E SS
If you walk into Joi Life Wellness on any given morning, you’ll likely notice something unexpected before you even reach the front desk: a small sign that reads, “It’s okay to leave your super cape at the door.” It’s a gentle invitation — a reminder that in a world where everyone is constantly juggling more than ever, Joi Life offers something increasingly rare: a place to exhale. A place to be honest. A place to be human. And as we step into a new year, that feels like exactly the reset we all need. A TEAM ROOTED IN WHOLE-PERSON CARE Joi Life Wellness is led by a team that blends clinical expertise with genuine compassion. At the center is Dr. Mitzi Joi Williams, a Board-Certified Neurologist and internationally recognized Multiple Sclerosis specialist. She is joined by Dr. Jakai McEwen, a fellowship-trained MS specialist with strengths in public health and headache management, and Bernard Brown, Practice Administrator and Co-Founder of the Joi Life Foundation, who helps create the warm, patient-centered environment patients experience on arrival. Together, they embrace a simple truth: wellness is shaped by everything a person carries — stress, sleep patterns, lifestyle, emotions — and meaningful care must honor the whole picture. RECOGNIZING WHEN BALANCE SLIPS Because their work spans neurology and whole-person wellness, the team is highly attuned to the early signs of imbalance. Many people arrive describing persistent fatigue, disrupted sleep, foggy thinking, or a sense of overwhelm that turns everyday tasks into challenges. Rather than treating these concerns as isolated issues, the team sees them as important indicators. They understand how emotional strain can show up physically, how stress influences clarity, and how lifestyle patterns affect energy. Their approach helps patients make sense of symptoms that often feel confusing or discouraging. CONTINUED >

A SPACE BUILT FOR GROUNDING One of the first things people notice about Joi Life is how grounded the space feels. The team believes progress begins when patients feel safe enough to pause, breathe, and let go of the pressure to be endlessly strong. That “super cape” sign isn’t just a cute detail — it reflects the environment the practice intentionally cultivates. Patients are encouraged to be open, honest, and unfiltered. Conversations feel collaborative, treatment plans are personalized, and no one is rushed. Expertise and empathy coexist, helping patients feel supported rather than overwhelmed. LESSONS FROM MS CARE THAT HELP EVERYONE Although Joi Life is widely recognized for its excellence in Multiple Sclerosis care, the principles learned in MS treatment support people with all neurologic disease — and anyone seeking better balance. MS affects individuals differently, reinforcing the team’s belief in customized care. Two patients may share a diagnosis yet require entirely different strategies, and that flexibility shapes every interaction. Their neurological expertise also highlights a universal truth: mental and physical health are inseparable. Stress can aggravate symptoms, sleep affects cognitive function, and emotional wellness influences energy. These insights help patients understand the deeper connections between what they feel physically and what they carry mentally. GRACE FOR THE SEASON YOU’RE IN As 2026 begins, the Joi Life team encourages people to recognize that capacity changes with each season of life. What was manageable before may feel overwhelming now, and respecting that shift is part of caring for oneself. Many people push themselves to move at full speed through stressful or demanding periods. Joi Life offers a gentler perspective: notice what you’re carrying, set realistic expectations, and offer yourself grace. This mindset isn’t indulgent — it helps protect long-term well-being. SMALL RITUALS, BIG RESET Alongside their advanced knowledge of current treatments and disease management, the team often recommends beginning with something simple: a few minutes of meditation. Meditation doesn’t require long sessions or perfect stillness — just a brief moment to pause and reset. Even short reflection can calm the nervous system and restore clarity. They also encourage small, steady habits: stepping outside for fresh air, stretching in the morning, taking breaks from screens, or creating quiet moments between responsibilities. These lightweight rituals help maintain balance long before burnout arrives.

Together, they embrace a simple truth: wellness is shaped by everything a person carries — stress, sleep patterns, lifestyle, emotions — and meaningful care must honor the whole picture.
LOOKING AHEAD WITH CURIOSITY The coming year brings meaningful growth for Joi Life Wellness. The practice has expanded its research efforts, exploring questions about brain health, neurological resilience, and how lifestyle patterns shape long-term wellness. Through the Joi Life Foundation, the team continues advocating for education, equitable access, and broader representation in clinical research. For them, research isn’t just discovery — it’s a pathway to empowering patients with knowledge that supports confidence and long-term well-being. A NEW YEAR, A NEW WAY TO CARE FOR YOURSELF Stepping into Joi Life Wellness feels like entering a model of care where science and heart work hand in hand. It’s a place where patients are encouraged to set down the cape, breathe deeply, and approach wellness as an ongoing practice rather than a performance. As 2026 begins, their invitation is simple: Listen inward. Honor your limits. Protect your peace. And welcome more Joi into the year ahead. U N PLUG TO R E CH A RGE
Because sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves is put the phone down and simply be.
Silver Comet Trail (by Becca McCoy)
We live in a world where our screens wake up with us, trail behind us all day, and glow at us long after we should be asleep. Some days it feels impossible to escape the noise. But here in Smyrna-Vinings, taking a real, breath-deepening pause is easier than we think. All around us are spaces, moments, and little pockets of calm just waiting to be enjoyed — no notifications required.
Let Nature Do the Resetting
There’s something magical about stepping onto a quiet trail and letting the world hush a bit. Down at the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, the sound of moving water has a way of melting everything else. You don’t need a big plan — just follow the path, breathe in the fresh air, and let the river set the pace.

Closer to home, Tolleson Park, Taylor-Brawner Park, and North Cooper Lake Park offer soft, shaded spots perfect for wandering, reflecting, or simply sitting still for a moment. A deep breath under a big sky can do a world of good.
Play for the Fun of It
You don’t have to be an athlete to enjoy a little screen-free movement. Pop into the Smyrna Community Center and rediscover how good it feels to play a quick game of pickleball or table tennis just for fun. No step counts. No activity rings. Just laughter and a little friendly competition. If you’re in the mood for something different, explore the Smyrna Outdoor Adventure Center at North Cooper Lake Park. Even if you never touch a mountain bike, wandering the trails or watching riders zip by brings a burst of outdoor energy that’s refreshing all on its own.
Get Curious Again
Good coffee at GOOD Kitchen (by Ashley Putnam)
Unplugging doesn’t mean going silent — it just means tuning into what’s right in front of us. Browse the Smyrna History Museum, explore local shops at a slow, wandering pace, or let yourself get delightfully lost in the stacks at the library. There’s something about turning real pages that softens the edges of the day.
Do Something With Your Hands
Creativity is such a gentle way to reset. Pick up a new cookbook from the library and try a recipe just for fun. Sketch in the park. Start that tiny DIY project you’ve been thinking about. Write a note to a friend. Doing things the “old-fashioned” way — with your hands and without hurry — brings us back to ourselves. For a little connection sprinkled in, meet a friend for a phone-free lunch at The GOOD Kitchen and enjoy a conversation that doesn’t compete with anyone’s screen.
Reconnect by Giving Back
If there’s one thing that instantly centers us, it’s helping someone else. Spend a morning volunteering with Keep Smyrna Beautiful, join a cleanup, or support a local nonprofit that speaks to your heart. Nothing pulls us into the present quite like working side-by-side with neighbors for something good. Unplugging doesn’t have to be dramatic or difficult — it just takes a tiny shift and a willingness to be here, fully. And in Smyrna-Vinings, we’re surrounded by beautiful ways to recharge whenever we need them.

WELLNESS WISDOM for the New Year Simple, realistic tips from local experts to help you feel stronger, calmer, and more energized in 2026.
There’s something about January that invites all of us to rethink the way we take care of ourselves. Not in big, overwhelming ways—but in small, meaningful steps that actually feel doable. That’s why we asked a handful of local wellness experts to share one tip they believe can genuinely help people move into 2026 with more energy, strength, and ease. Their advice is simple, smart, and refreshingly realistic. Whether you’re hoping to move more, stand taller, eat better, or feel calmer, these ideas are a great place to begin.

DEVON BARILL & JADE KIMBALL Carriage House Collective Pilates “We believe in community as a wellness practice. Surrounding yourself with people who lift you up genuinely enhances your quality of life. And when you pair that connection with another healthy habit - like a shared workout, a weekly walk, or simply showing up together - the benefits expand. You feel more supported, more consistent, and more energized. Community makes your wellness routine feel sustainable and honestly, a lot more fun.”
BRENDA DIXON Juice Plus+ Partner and Certified Health Consultant “Would you like more energy? Quicker workout recovery? Improved sleep? Better gut health? Healthier weight? Consistency is the key! Energize your day by choosing small, powerful habits that spark lasting vitality. Start with colorful, nutrient-rich meals with lots of plants, drink plenty of water, and move with purpose—lift, stretch, or walk! Every positive choice builds momentum, reminding you that progress is possible. Stay consistent, stay confident, and keep it simple.”
AMANDA BAILEY F45 North Smyrna Studio Manager “As a female in the fitness industry for 10 years, my biggest tip is simple: lift the weights. Strength training is a powerful tool for women. It builds lean muscle mass, boosts metabolism, improves bone density and so much more. Changing your body composition in ways cardio alone can’t, while burning fat long after your workout ends. Fuel your body correctly and lift heavy!”
DR. ARARAT LEGUIZAMON B.S.; D.C. East West Spine and Rehab Clinic “Whenever you’re out being active (especially if your family drags you around Disney like mine!) take a moment: Square your shoulders, tighten your abdomen, lightly squeeze your upper back muscles, and take a few deep breaths while holding that position. I’m a stickler for posture and overall balance, and this tiny habit will help with slouching, improve posture, reduce tension, and ultimately feeling your best!”
KENT OSBORN Kent Osborn PT “While ‘upright rows’ are shown in the muscle magazines and taught by trainers, they often cause injury to the rotator cuff. This is because the shoulder is built to externally rotate the arm as you lift it but upright rows INTERNALLY rotate the arm and pinch the rotator cuff tendon. Shoulders are built to move your hand. Lifting the arm without the hand first is unnatural. Other exercises work better without injuring shoulders.”

SM Y R NA’S NATU R A L ESCA PE Find balance and vitality exploring the lush trails and active paths at North Cooper Lake Park.
In our fast-paced suburban life, true silence is a luxury. Tucked off North Cooper Lake Road, a sanctuary exists where active living meets serenity. Here you can find the essence of “green exercise”; combining physical movement with the calming influence of the outdoors. The park’s trail system offers a perfect release from the daily grind. Cyclists take to the technical lines and clay berms, tackling a course designed to rival professional mountain tracks.
It is a ride that builds endurance and skill, offering a high-intensity workout right in the neighborhood. For those on foot, the perimeter path offers a scenic alternative. The trail winds through a dense corridor of ferns and towering oaks, creating a cool, shaded loop perfect for logging miles away from traffic. It is a vivid reminder of the diverse ecosystem thriving just minutes from our town.

The bike park offers more than just adrenaline. Navigating the rolling terrain requires full-body engagement and sharp concentration. This intensity clears mental clutter, offering a unique form of moving meditation that leaves you feeling accomplished and energized.
A LUSH BACKDROP
Health isn't just about burning calories; it is about connection. The trails here are lined with lush ferns and native flora that thrive in the shade. This vibrant greenery creates a cooling, refreshing atmosphere that encourages you to breathe deeper and walk longer.
PAUSE FOR WONDER
Slowing down is part of the process. Spotting a pollinator buzzing through the wildflowers or sunlight hitting a leaf reminds us to be present. These small moments of connection with the local ecosystem are essential for mental well-being, grounding us in the beauty of our own community.

Pennington’s Pen This is the month for new resolutions. I won’t bore you with the statistics of how many of us begin them—and how few of us see them through. But I do want to offer you one to consider as you make your list for 2026: resolve to worship weekly in a biblically faithful church.
Hebrews 10:25 reminds us of the importance of gathering with the assembly of believers so that we can stir one another up to love and good works. I know I personally need to be worshiping every week, because if I’m not being stirred by good things, it’s almost a guarantee that I’ll be stirred by things that aren’t so good. Singing songs of praise is wonderful. Being with others in an authentic, deepening faith community is wonderful too. But what stirs us most deeply is listening to a sermon that comes straight from God’s Word. As one who humbly attempts to preach week after week, let me share a story that explains what I hope to do each Sunday. When I was in high school chemistry, we spent an entire class conducting a titration test. To determine the concentration of an unknown solution, we added a known substance to a beaker—one drip at a time. We counted every single drop. It felt like it took forever, but the test was complete when the solution finally changed color. Until then, we simply kept adding drops. Each sermon is like one drop added to the unknown substance of a listener’s life. Often, it takes dozens of sermons before real change is visible. But when the preaching is faithful and the listener keeps listening, the power of the gospel truly does bring about transformation. We would love for you to come and change with us at Smyrna First. But even if you feel led to join another faithful, Bible-believing church, I encourage you to take up this simple but meaningful challenge of weekly worship.

SOUP AND BREAD:

Hearty food nourishes the body during cold winter months

As we continue to embrace the cold weather, we may find ourselves craving heavier and grounding foods as we retreat into hibernation. This change in appetite reflects our body’s desire to align with the cycles of nature. Moving into the New Year, it can be common to place more discipline or restrictions on our eating habits. But what if instead of dieting, we nourished ourselves by choosing to support the ebb and flow of our body’s seasons? What if we chose connection — cooking seasonal meals and allowing ourselves to pause to truly enjoy our food? Maybe cheesy bread could be served without the side of guilt. This Italian wedding soup recipe is simple in its approach, but the result is a hearty and brothy dish. Chunky meats and vegetables add texture to the rich, savory broth making it the ideal meal to help you retreat from the cold temperatures. The Hasselback bread loaf is a straightforward, melty wonder and the perfect vessel for sopping up any leftover broth and goodies in your soup bowl. Together, the soup and cheesy bread make for a well-rounded meal to ground you this season, with a little indulgence.
HASSELBACK MOZZARELLA BREAD LOAF INGREDIENTS • 1 Italian bread loaf • 1 cup butter • 4-5 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tsp kosher salt • 2 tsp dried oregano • 8 oz. bag of shredded mozzarella cheese
DIRECTIONS 1.
Preheat oven to 350 F.
2. Cut foil that is 3 times the length of the bread loaf and lay flat on countertop. 3. Place bread loaf parallel to the length of the foil. 4. With a serrated knife, cut bread in ¾ in. slices, making sure not to cut all the way through. 5. Melt butter in a bowl. Add garlic and seasonings. Stir to incorporate. 6. With a pastry brush, coat the slices of bread with butter mixture. Be generous with your butter! If you have leftover butter, pour the rest over the entire loaf. 7. Grab handfuls of mozzarella cheese and stuff in between each slice. 8. Cover the bread loaf with foil and place in oven. Bake for 20 minutes, uncovering the foil for the last 5 minutes until the top of the bread is golden brown. CONTINUED >

INGREDIENTS
ITALIAN WEDDING SOUP RECIPE 4 Servings
• 1 lb. fresh or frozen pre-made meatballs • ½ cup carrots, diced small • ½ cup celery, diced small • 1 cup onions, diced small • 3 garlic cloves, minced • 1 bay leaf • 2 tbsp butter • 2 tbsp cooking oil • 48 oz low sodium chicken broth • ½ cup orzo pasta (or any small, short noodle) • 1 tbsp kosher salt • 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper • 1 tbsp fresh oregano, chopped roughly • 1 tbsp fresh flat-leaf parsley
DIRECTIONS 1.
Whether freshly baked or cooked from frozen, prepare your meatballs and set aside. Meatballs can be prepared ahead of time and kept in the fridge.
2. Bring a medium-sized pot to medium heat. Add oil and butter. 3. Add vegetables to the pot and sweat until onions are translucent (about 5 minutes). Stir occasionally. 4. Add the bay leaf, chicken broth, salt, and pepper to vegetables. Turn heat to medium-high. 5. Bring broth mixture to a rolling boil for five minutes. With tongs, add meatballs to the boiling broth. 6. Add orzo to the broth, stirring continuously to make sure the pasta doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan. 7. Continue to cook the pasta for 6-7 minutes. Taste test to make sure pasta is al dente. 8. Throw the fresh herbs into the soup and add salt and pepper to taste. 9. Serve immediately.

SMALL BUSINESS INSIDER
Advertisement
Foundations Each month we dive into topics relevant to small and home-based businesses. The objective is to share insider knowledge that I have learned in the many years of running TRUE Space, a Smyrna based virtual office (business address and mailbox), workspace rental, corporate formation, and registered agent service business. Those services help small businesses get up and running, reduce risk, improve their business image, expand, and maximize their chances for success. The Beginning…Once you have your idea for your business venture, a business name, and capital to start, it’s time to build the foundation of your business. The three required foundational components, listed in the order that you need to establish them, are address, website domain, and phone number. Business Address: In every step you will be asked your business address, so you should establish this first. You should never associate your home address with your business. The internet can link and display that address for all to see. Separating your personal life from your business life it a must. There are plenty of crazy people out there, and no matter how well you operate your business, there will always be someone who fails to read instructions and is unhappy. You don’t want them showing up on your doorstep. Alternatively, using a PO Box or a retail mailbox store address (shopping center) is often a death sentence for a small business since they deliver a low-quality business image. Consider which you would trust more (hire), the mailbox store business, or the one in an office building? You want to show potential customers that you are established enough to have a real business address. The same applies to meeting clients. You should never meet a potential client at a coffee shop or other unprofessional location. A virtual office, located in an office building, with rentable meeting space, is a must have foundational item for any small business operating out of a home. Website Domain: You need a website. You want a domain name that aligns with your business name. With millions of businesses out there, you want to find and buy a domain before finalizing your business name. There are many services like GoDaddy.com or Wix.com that can help you purchase a domain, build a business website, and provide email service. The domain name typically stays where it is purchased, but gets electronically “pointed” to wherever the servers hosting your website are located. Your domain service and website can be through the same or different platforms. My recommendation: Set up email service to use your domain through Google Admin Console (paid service). Your business email will operate just like Gmail. Phone Number: Your business phone number will likely be displayed everywhere so you don’t want to change it. Don’t make the mistake of using your cell phone as your business number, and don’t add an extra phone line to your personal phone plan. Your business needs to own the phone number. There are some very low-cost services like grasshopper.com where you can purchase a phone number, get a phone tree (Press 1 for x), voicemail, call forwarding, etc. They offer apps that enable you to make outbound calls from your personal cell phone that show your business phone number on caller ID. Warning: Never use a phone number provided by a virtual office service since it is not owned by you. Plus, if you leave the virtual office, you lose your phone number that you already pasted everywhere. If you already launched your business without the 3 key foundational pieces, it’s never too late to add them. GARY KRA JECKI, PRESIDENT T R U E S PAC E , I N C .
