LIFESTYLE LETTER

Holiday Greetings from the Editor

Happy Holidays, friends!

It’s the season of twinkling lights, cozy nights, and that unmistakable feeling of joy that fills our little corner of the world each December. Every year, my boys and I find ourselves pulled back into the same familiar rhythms — digging out those slightly crooked but absolutely perfect handmade ornaments, baking cookies while Christmas music fills the house, and spending far too long debating which tree is “the one.” These traditions, simple as they are, remind me that the real magic of the holidays comes from connection — with family, friends, and community.

And speaking of connection, this month’s Giving Issue is packed with stories that celebrate the generous spirit that defines Smyrna and Vinings. You’ll meet some incredible locals — from Santa Smith and his cheerful sidekick Minty the Elf to the women of the Smyrna Business Association who gathered to lift each other up at the annual Women’s Forum. We’re also spotlighting local artisans and authors whose creativity shines this season, including the beautiful finds at Lavender & Cotton Antiques and Jonquies gift shop, as well as the heartwarming new Christmas story A Reindear Tale

Of course, no holiday issue would be complete without opportunities to give back. From Support Smyrna’s Southern Nights Gala and upcoming GiftMart to our neighbors, educators, and community leaders sharing their favorite charities, there’s no shortage of ways to spread kindness and make a difference this season.

Whether you’re strolling through the local markets, curled up with a good book, or taking a quiet moment in Taylor-Brawner’s Healing Garden, I hope this season fills your heart with warmth, wonder, and gratitude. Here’s to giving — of time, of heart, and of love.

Wishing you peace, joy, and all the sparkle of the season,

December 2025

Patty & Ben Ferguson

TIMELESS Treasures, Southern SOUL

Tucked inside a charming historic home at the corner of King and Concord, Lavender & Cotton Antiques feels like stepping into another time — part French countryside, part Southern farmhouse, and all heart. Owners Patty and Ben Ferguson have created a space that invites visitors to slow down, reminisce, and rediscover the beauty of things with a story to tell.

Patty and Ben are the heart behind it all — a couple whose love story was written through their shared passion for antiques. They first met at an antique mall in Woodstock, where Patty was a dealer and Ben a manager. What began with a shared love of “the hunt” grew into a partnership — in business and in life. “We’ve both always dreamed of opening a place like this,” Patty says. “Something that reflects our style and our story.”

Lavender & Cotton Antiques blends European elegance and Georgia charm to inspire the joy of giving.

Inside their shop,  European country meets Southern charm. Lavender represents the French countryside; cotton, the warmth of the South. Their carefully curated mix of furniture, art, décor, and heirlooms includes treasures from France, Italy, and England — alongside Georgia-made soaps, candles, and clothing that reflect the region’s easygoing elegance. Every piece has been handpicked for its craftsmanship and character, whether it’s a centuries-old mirror from Paris or a vintage teacup that once graced a Southern table.

For Patty and Ben, the thrill is in the search. Their treasure hunts take them from estate sales in the Southeast to antique fairs in the Midwest — and occasionally across the Atlantic. They buy what they love, balancing timeless antiques with accessible pieces for today’s shoppers. “We like to offer something for everyone,” Patty says. “Our store gives people options that are unique, meaningful, and often one-of-a-kind.”

Running a business together comes naturally to the Fergusons. Both bring entrepreneurial experience and complementary strengths — Patty’s background in accounting and marketing pairs perfectly with Ben’s creativity and knack for repairs. “Ben can build or fix almost anything,” Patty says with a smile. “I’m the painter.”

The holidays are an especially magical time at Lavender & Cotton. Vintage ornaments, old-fashioned décor, and childhood memories mingle in every corner. “We see so many young families come through,” Patty says. “Children are fascinated by things like typewriters or rotary phones — it’s a history lesson for them.” Those nostalgic moments, she adds, are a gift in themselves.

And that’s what the Fergusons see as the true heart of their work: giving people the experience of connection — to the past, to craftsmanship, and to community. “It’s not just about what someone buys,” Patty says. “It’s about the feeling they take with them. The joy of remembering. The beauty of rediscovery.”

In this season of giving, Lavender & Cotton reminds us that the most meaningful gifts often aren’t new at all — they’re simply waiting to be found again.

Stop by this season to browse, reminisce, and find a gift that tells a story — one that feels every bit as special as the person you’re giving it to.

WRAP UP Happy

Bright, witty, and full of charm, Jonquies is the Market Village shop where joy, laughter, and gift-giving meet.

When Kelsey Surratt opened  Jonquies in Smyrna Market Village, she wasn’t just opening a gift shop — she was creating a space that feels like it’s always been part of the neighborhood. Bright, inviting, and just a little bit cheeky,  Jonquies is a love letter to Smyrna, wrapped up in ribbons, candles, and laughter.

Tucked along the brick-lined streets of the Village, the shop glows with the soft scent of candles and the shimmer of carefully wrapped gifts. Through the front windows, twinkling lights and colorful displays invite shoppers to slow down and stay awhile. It’s the kind of place that feels familiar the first time you walk in — like discovering something that’s been waiting for you all along.

Even the name is meant to make you smile — and maybe pause for a second. “Is it  Jonkeez or  Jon-kweez?” Kelsey laughs. “Honestly, however you say it is fine! It’s our affectionate nod to the Jonquil City — and we kind of liked the idea that it sounded like the name of the people who live here. The Jonquies! It just felt right.”

That mix of humor, heart, and hometown pride runs through everything in the store. “We wanted it to be playful and welcoming — not fussy,” she says. “Sort of part gift shop, part curiosity cabinet.”

And it is exactly that. One minute you’re admiring a delicate pair of earrings; the next, you’re giggling at a mug that says something a little too relatable. Shelves brim with clever hats, cozy sweaters, bath and body goodies, candles, and baby gifts that practically wrap themselves. “We try to stock things that make people smile or think, ‘Oh, that’s perfect for so-and-so,’” Kelsey says. “And yes, Erik insists that there’s always something for men, too.”

Her husband, Erik, is her steady partner in both life and business. “I’m a list-maker and an anxious details person,” Kelsey admits. “He’s calm and laid-back. When I get overwhelmed, he’ll happily jump in to help customers or pick out products — and he’s surprisingly good at it!”

JONQUIES

Together, the couple live just a short walk away, making Smyrna Market Village feel like an extension of home. “The Village has such a heartbeat,” Kelsey says. “Everyone’s out walking, talking, and supporting local businesses. The markets and festivals are wonderful — and honestly, you can’t beat the commute.”

This shop may be new, but the roots run deep. Kelsey grew up watching her parents run a beloved gift and collectibles boutique during the heyday of the ’90s and early 2000s. “I learned early that a store isn’t just about what you sell,” she says. “It’s about how people feel when they walk in the door. My parents built their business on community and service. Customers became friends because they were remembered — because someone took the time to ask about their kids or set something aside they’d love. That’s the kind of connection that stays with you.”

After years in corporate accounting, Kelsey found herself missing that spark — the creativity, the conversations, the joy of helping someone find the perfect thing.  Jonquies became her full-circle moment. “We’ve lived in Smyrna since 2015, but opening the shop has been like meeting the city all over again,” she says. “I was a shy kid growing up, so connecting with people didn’t always come naturally. But this has been such a gift — getting to know our neighbors and being part of something joyful.”

Thoughtful gifts, local charm, and a dash of humor—right in the heart of Smyrna Market Village.

1260 W Spring St, Suite D; Smyrna, GA 30080

Pop in, browse a bit, and find something that feels perfectly “you.”

Kelsey Surratt
“A shop isn’t just about what you sell — it’s about how people feel when they’re there.”

For the holidays,  Jonquies transforms into a treasure trove of seasonal delight. You’ll find festive décor, locally inspired Smyrna merchandise, ornaments that twinkle with humor, and gifts that make you laugh out loud. “People can’t get enough of the funny saying hats or garden flags,” Kelsey says. “Humor’s been huge this year — everyone wants something that brings a smile.”

But  Jonquies is more than a shop full of pretty things. It’s a celebration of thoughtfulness — the kind that lives in handwritten notes, unexpected gifts, and small gestures that make life brighter. “I want people to feel like they can take their time and just enjoy being here,” Kelsey says. “Maybe they find the perfect gift. Maybe they just find a good laugh or a nice moment. I hope it always feels personal.”

When the evening hush settles over the Market Village and the last shoppers head home, Kelsey and Erik trade the bustle of the store for the comfort of home — three dogs at their feet, dinner from around the corner, and a Christmas movie they’ve already seen ten times (and will happily watch ten more).

For them, that’s what giving is all about — creating joy, connection, and community one thoughtful moment at a time. And at Jonquies, those moments are waiting behind every ribbon, every candle, and every “just because” gift that reminds us how special it feels to be remembered.

SOUTHERN NIGHTS GALA SHINES BRIGHT

A heartfelt evening at The Reed House brought neighbors together to raise hope for local families in need.

Even an unexpected downpour couldn’t wash away the joy of the Southern Nights Gala. Guests arriving at The Reed House were greeted by members of Campbell High School’s JROTC and the Smyrna Youth Council, umbrellas in hand and smiles all around. The historic home glowed against the gray sky, a picture-perfect backdrop for an evening of connection, community, and giving.

Presenting Sponsor Dr. John Lipman adds flair to philanthropy with his custom Atlanta Fibroid Center's logo!
“It’s a local effort with immediate impact— neighbors helping neighbors in the truest sense.”

Inside, warmth radiated from every corner. Tables—draped in navy, cream, and blush—were topped with lush florals by KiraFlora, while signage by Instant Imprints guided guests through the stately rooms. The Sip! Truck was parked out front serving wine and beer, and the incredible grazing table from Meats to Sweets stopped everyone in their tracks—a work of art piled high with cheeses, fruits, and charcuterie that was every bit as delicious as it was stunning. The Wilson Trio filled the room with their exquisite sound, setting the perfect backdrop for mingling and celebration.

As rain poured steadily across the lawn, the Campbell High School Marching Spartans refused to let the weather win. Organizers quickly moved tables aside on the wraparound porch to make space for the band, and the students played their hearts out—drums pounding, brass shining—while guests watched from inside, clapping and cheering them on. Their energy added a joyful burst of hometown pride to the night.

After the performance, Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle Editor and Support Smyrna board member Stacey Scott welcomed guests and introduced Publisher Burke Scott, who personally thanked each sponsor, donor, and volunteer before turning the microphone over to Mayor Derek Norton. His heartfelt remarks about Support Smyrna—its mission, its impact, and the lives it touches—resonated with everyone in the room. Presenting sponsor Dr. John Lipman of Atlanta Fibroid Center shared his affection for Smyrna and why supporting its people matters so much to him.

The food was another highlight, thanks to local favorites Atkins Park, Good Kitchen, Hokido Japanese, and Zucca, as well as Smyrna’s Great American Cookie Company. A special nod goes to Veronica and Peter Tompkins of Good Kitchen, who flawlessly coordinated service throughout the evening—gracefully navigating the night’s surprises with poise, teamwork, and trademark smiles. Behind the scenes, Support Smyrna Chair Laura Norton, along with board members Colleen Oakley Tull, Michelle Osborne, Daniel Parker, and Stacey Scott, plus a handful of dedicated volunteers, brought it all to life with heart and hustle.

No gala is complete without a little friendly competition, and the silent auction delivered just that. Tables overflowed with treasures donated by local businesses and residents alike—handcrafted jewelry, original artwork, autographed books, vacation getaways, sportssuite experiences, grills, and more. Guests lingered over the displays, swapping bids and smiles, knowing that each dollar raised would help a Smyrna neighbor in need. The collection was a stunning showcase of community talent, generosity, and heart.

A MISSION ROOTED IN KINDNESS

Support Smyrna’s mission is simple but powerful: to help Smyrna residents in need—children, families, seniors, and veterans—through direct, local assistance. What began as a grassroots effort among neighbors has grown into one of the city’s most beloved nonprofits, connecting resources to real people and meeting immediate needs with compassion and care.

Funds raised from Southern Nights support a wide range of local initiatives, including Gift a Family, which provides Christmas gifts to hundreds of Smyrna schoolchildren who might otherwise go without. Support Smyrna also helps veterans with home accessibility upgrades, assists families struggling with utilities during winter months, and steps in when unexpected emergencies strike. The organization works closely with local schools, churches, and community partners to identify those who need help most—and to deliver it quietly, personally, and with dignity.

In many cases, Support Smyrna fills the gap between crisis and stability. From providing groceries and school supplies to funding mobility equipment or temporary housing, every dollar raised goes directly toward improving lives within city limits. It’s a local effort with immediate impact—neighbors helping neighbors in the truest sense.

LOOKING AHEAD

This year’s Southern Nights wasn’t just a fundraiser—it was a celebration of everything that makes Smyrna shine. The laughter, the music, the togetherness—all served as a reminder of how much good can happen when a community comes together with open hearts.

And while the rain may have kept everyone indoors, it somehow made the night even cozier, reinforcing the spirit of unity that defines this city.

If you missed it this year, make plans now for next time. Southern Nights is more than an event—it’s an experience. A chance to connect, give back, and celebrate the compassion that makes Smyrna truly special.

The Heart Behind the Red Suit

Santa Smith and Minty the Elf share the joy, gratitude, and giving spirit of Christmas.

When Paul Smith pulls on the red suit each December, it’s more than just a costume — it’s a legacy. For over 25 years, his father donned the same crimson coat in Michigan, spreading joy and wonder to generations of families.

“He didn’t just wear the red suit,” Paul says. “He embodied the spirit of Christmas.”

After his father passed away, Paul felt a tug at his heart — a calling to carry forward the tradition. His very first event as Santa fell exactly one year to the day after his father’s passing.

“I remember feeling the weight of that suit — not just on my shoulders, but in my heart,” he recalls. “Like I was stepping into his boots and his legacy.”

What began as a deeply personal tribute has grown into something that now touches hundreds of lives each season.

Today, Paul continues that legacy here in Smyrna — joined by his wife and partner-in-merriment, Michelle, better known as Minty the Elf. Together, they’ve turned what started as a labor of love into a community tradition that sparkles with laughter, warmth, and joy.

Minty brings her own brand of Christmas magic — a mix of quick wit, contagious energy, and just the right amount of peppermint sass

— while Santa Smith carries the same gentle kindness and patience his father was known for.

“As homeowners here for more than 22 years, we truly love and cherish Smyrna,” says Michelle. “Bringing a touch of holiday magic to our neighbors and local businesses is our way of giving back to a community that’s given us so much.”

Now entering their fifth season together, Santa and Minty have become fixtures of local holiday celebrations — from appearances at Stout Brothers and Ruby’s Pizza to cherished home visits that have become part of family traditions.

“The best part isn’t the big events or the photos,” Paul says. “It’s the quiet moments — a child’s eyes lighting up, a parent whispering thank you, a hug that says more than words ever could. That’s what the magic is all about.”

One of their most unforgettable moments came during a visit to a local nursing home. “A gentleman who hadn’t spoken in over a year looked up at me, his eyes filling with tears, and softly said, ‘Santa?’” Paul recalls. “It reminded me how powerful those childhood memories are — how they can reawaken joy, even for just a moment.”

That same compassion and sense of service extend well beyond the holiday season. In November, the Smiths partnered with the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation to host a special photo event honoring local first responders — a heartfelt gesture of gratitude after firefighters bravely contained a devastating blaze near their Forest Hills home this summer.

“It was more than just a photo opportunity,” Paul says. “It was a chance for our community to rally around the heroes who protect us every day.” The event drew families, neighbors, and city leaders alike — a reminder of how kindness and connection can turn even the hardest moments into something beautiful.

At home, the Smiths’ favorite holiday tradition is simple: gathering with family and friends, sharing laughter, and pausing to appreciate the season. “Santa’s schedule can be a whirlwind,” Michelle says with a smile. “But being surrounded by loved ones fills our hearts with gratitude. That’s what truly makes the holidays special.”

And when asked what Santa himself might wish for this year? Paul’s answer is simple: “More kindness in the world. Small acts — a smile, a helping hand — can ripple outward and make our world a more compassionate place.”

Merry & Meaningful

HOLIDAY SHOPPING THAT CHANGES LIVES CLOSE TO HOME

Step through the doors of Smyrna First United Methodist Church this December, and you’ll be greeted by the sights, sounds, and scents of the season — cinnamon-sweet baked goods, twinkling lights, and rows of tables overflowing with handmade treasures. It’s GiftMart, a cherished Smyrna tradition where the joy of the holidays meets the heart of giving.

From December 3–6, the church’s Welcome Center transforms into a cozy winter marketplace filled with the work of more than 50 talented artisans. Shoppers will find everything from candles and pottery to jewelry, woodcrafts, and festive décor — each item made with love and meant to be shared. But what makes GiftMart truly special is that every purchase gives twice: once to the lucky recipient and again to local families in need.

All proceeds from GiftMart benefit United Women in Faith missions and the Tillman House Resource Center, a Smyrna-based outreach that provides diapers, hygiene products, and necessities to families facing hard times. Over the years, funds from GiftMart have also supported organizations like SafePath, Street Grace, and Beloved Atlanta — ensuring that the spirit of generosity stretches far beyond the event itself.

This year, that connection grows even deeper. Organizers are sponsoring several Tillman clients as first-time vendors, covering their fees and helping them share their talents, earn income, and create a brighter Christmas for their families.

“Supporting creativity while strengthening our community is what makes GiftMart truly special,” organizers say.

For Julia Devane, Director of Missions at Tillman House, the impact is easy to see. “You’ll never forget the look on a mom’s face when she realizes she can pick up essentials for her children — and it’s all free,” she says. “Those moments of relief and gratitude are the true spirit of Christmas.”

The weekend also brings plenty of merry-making for all ages: Festive Friday, a craft night for ages 12 and up that supports UWF missions, and Hands On Christmas, a children’s craft fair held Saturday, December 6, from 9 a.m.–1 p.m. Kids can craft handmade gifts and ornaments to share with family and friends amid festive stations, glitter and glue, photos with Santa, and even a dress-up Nativity scene — a morning full of wonder, laughter, and cheer.

At its heart, GiftMart is about more than gifts — it’s about kindness wrapped in creativity, joy shared among neighbors, and the reminder that the brightest part of the season isn’t found under a tree, but in the giving.

As part of the City of Smyrna’s beloved Home for the Holidays celebration and annual Tree Lighting, the Kris Kringle Market transforms King Street and Village Green Park into a wonderland of lights, laughter, and local shopping. More than just a market, it’s a community gathering where neighbors mingle, families sip cocoa, and Santa himself makes a cheerful appearance. Visitors can browse handmade goods, seasonal décor, and thoughtful gifts while enjoying festive entertainment beneath Smyrna’s sparkling Christmas tree.

“Shop small, shine bright, and celebrate the season at Smyrna’s holiday markets— where every gift tells a story and supports a neighbor.”

Smyrna Handmade Holiday Market

Saturday, December 6 (10 AM–6 PM)

Sunday, December 7 (11 AM–5 PM) | Reed House & Brawner Hall

The celebration continues the following weekend at the Smyrna Handmade Holiday Market, hosted inside two of the city’s most picturesque historic landmarks. The Reed House and Brawner Hall set the scene for a cozy shopping experience filled with local artisans, makers, and creators offering everything from jewelry and artwork to baked goods and home décor. It’s the perfect place to find something special — made with heart and crafted close to home.

Together, these markets remind us that the true joy of the holidays comes not just from what we buy, but from the connections we make along the way.

Her Turn to Fly

Move over, Rudolph — there’s a new girl in town.

When Marietta author Rosemarie Perry, formerly a counselor at Griffin Middle School, traveled to Lapland, high above the Arctic Circle, she didn’t expect the trip to spark a Christmas story unlike any other. While talking with indigenous Sami herders and learning about the gentle, curious reindeer that roam the snowy tundra, she discovered a fun fact that changed how she saw Santa’s sleigh forever: in winter, male reindeer shed their antlers. That means every antlered reindeer pictured on Christmas cards — from Dasher to Vixen — is actually female.

AUTHOR ROSEMARIE

PERRY AND YOUNG ILLUSTRATOR HELEN DAVIS CREATE A HOLIDAY STORY FILLED WITH WONDER AND HEART.

“A REIN DEAR TALE CELEBRATES KINDNESS,

COURAGE, AND COOPERATION

— TIMELESS

LESSONS WRAPPED IN A STORY AS BRIGHT AS THE NORTHERN LIGHTS.”

“That’s when I knew there was a story here,” she says with a smile. “Why not imagine what would happen if Santa’s team was made up entirely of girls?”

The result is A Reindear Tale, a whimsical and heartwarming story about the year Santa’s sleigh is pulled by an all-female team led by Ruby, a royal reindeer who wears a ruby pendant that reflects starlight. When the “boys” on the team feel left out and try to sabotage the flight, everything else that can go wrong does — clouds cover the stars, the Naughty and Nice list flies overboard, and even Santa gets lost in the time band. Still, through teamwork, perseverance, and a little Christmas magic, the reindeer learn that friendship and cooperation shine brighter than any star.

To bring her story to life, Perry teamed up with Helen Davis, a talented senior at Wheeler High School who was recently crowned Homecoming Queen. After asking Wheeler’s art teacher to recommend a few students, Perry knew instantly Helen was “the one.” “She captured the spirit of the story perfectly,” Perry says proudly. “I hope young artists see what’s possible when they take a chance and believe in themselves.”

A Reindear Tale is more than a festive adventure — it’s a celebration of friendship, courage, and discovery, wrapped in twinkling humor and heart. With little known reindeer facts included, the book is entertaining and educational. “I hope it reminds children to welcome others, help one another, and turn disappointments into opportunities,” Perry says.

Available at your favorite local bookstore, as well as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, A Reindear Tale is poised to become a new holiday classic — one that’s sure to make this Christmas “a season to remember for all time.”

Novel Gifting Ideas from Local Authors

If your idea of holiday giving includes something that lasts beyond the wrapping paper, consider the timeless gift of a good story. These three recently released books from local authors offer suspense, imagination, and emotion—each one perfect for curling up with or sharing this season.

Michael Ludden — the Street King

In the Street King, the genteel charm of the South becomes the backdrop for a taut, fast-paced mystery. When a series of murders rocks the city, detective Tate Drawdy uncovers a sinister web of secrets stretching from Savannah’s cobblestone streets to its most powerful elite. But when he’s suddenly accused of murder himself, the case turns personal—and dangerous. His only hope may be his father, a retired attorney fighting his own battles. A master of Southern suspense, Ludden delivers a story steeped in atmosphere, tension, and family ties. Available in paperback and eBook at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and The Local Exchange on Marietta Square.

Gregg Power — Bloater

After the tragic loss of his wife, a brilliant neurosurgeon’s life unravels in ways neither he—nor anyone else—could imagine. Consumed by grief and rage, he transforms himself into a monstrous vigilante, taking aim at society’s cruelest social media predators. Bloater is a gripping psychological thriller that dares readers to look into the darkest corners of the human psyche. As two rookie FBI agents close in, the hunt becomes a chilling exploration of justice, obsession, and what happens when even the best of us are pushed too far. The first in a planned series, Bloater is available on Amazon.

Michael Webb — Lightbinder

Fantasy lovers, take note—this is one you’ll want on your shelf. In Lightbinder, seventeen-year-old Kaleth is too thin, too timid, and too kind for the brutal world of warrior training at Lightbinder Academy. But when his family faces ruin, he makes an unthinkable choice: to fight. Set in a richly imagined kingdom where magic and loyalty collide, Webb’s story blends heart, action, and mystery into an unforgettable young-adult epic. As Kaleth battles both his enemies and his own self-doubt, readers are reminded that courage often hides in the unlikeliest places. Available now on Amazon.

Empowered Women Empower Each Other

The Smyrna Business Association’s Women’s Forum brings heart, hope, and inspiration to local professionals.

When nearly 80 women from across Smyrna’s business community gathered for this year’s Smyrna Business Association Women’s Forum, the energy in the room was electric — filled with laughter, learning, and the kind of encouragement that reminds you you’re not alone on your journey.

This year’s theme,  Imposter Syndrome, struck a chord with attendees who came from every corner of the local business world — from small boutique owners and nail technicians to financial planners, real estate professionals, and corporate leaders. Each arrived ready to connect, learn, and lift one another up through candid conversation and shared experience.

The day’s keynote speakers did not disappoint. Cherie Caldwell of The Cherie Caldwell Company explored the history of imposter syndrome and the ways we can all recognize and rise above self-doubt. Cobb County Chief Magistrate Judge Joyette Holmes captivated the audience with her remarkable journey from a small town in South Georgia to becoming the county’s

first Black and first female chief magistrate judge and district attorney. Allison Giddons of Win-Tech shared how vision, perseverance, and belief helped her rebuild a company from near collapse and succeed in a male-dominated industry, proving that confidence and grit can open any door.

The forum also reflected the generous spirit of the season. Attendees supported  The Healing Closet, an organization that provides clothing and toiletries to women in recovery, by donating warm garments and writing personal notes of encouragement. The effort was a tremendous success and added a meaningful touch to an already uplifting day.

The SBA’s Women’s Forum remains one of the organization’s most anticipated events — a celebration of connection, empowerment, and community that continues to grow each year. Plans are already underway for next year’s gathering, and the SBA welcomes ideas for speakers and potential corporate sponsors. Those interested can reach out at smyrnabusinessassociation@ gmail.com to get involved.

“Lifting each other up in business and beyond — that’s the true heart of the Women’s Forum.”

HOW SMYRNA’S CITY LEADERS INSPIRED THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCOUTS

Leading by Example

ARTICLE BY STACEY SCOTT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY J. BARRETT CARTER

When members of Scouting America Troop 220 (Boys Unit) and Troop 1872 (Girls Unit) gathered at Life Church one recent evening, they expected a night of learning. What they didn’t anticipate was a powerful reminder that leadership — and giving — often begin with simply showing up for others.

Representatives from several Smyrna Scouting America Troops and Cub Scouts Packs filled the room, joined by families, volunteers, and church leaders. The Scouts listened closely as three of Smyrna’s own civic leaders shared stories from their lives of public service: Chief of Police Keith Zgonc, Deputy Fire Chief Eric Mohrmann, and City Councilman Tim Gould.

Chief Zgonc spoke about integrity and teamwork — values that guide every officer under his command. “When you put on the badge, you’re part of something bigger than yourself,” he told the Scouts, encouraging them to look out for one another both in and out of uniform.

Deputy Chief Mohrmann shared lessons learned from decades in emergency response: the importance of preparation, calm under pressure, and the steady confidence that comes from practice. “Those are things Scouting already teaches you,” he said, drawing smiles from Troop leaders who know the truth of that firsthand.

Councilman Gould’s message was simple yet powerful: leadership starts with service. “It doesn’t always look grand,” he said. “Sometimes it’s helping a neighbor, volunteering at a cleanup, or mentoring someone younger. That’s how you change a community.”

Each leader encouraged the Scouts to stay active in Scouting America and to stay involved locally — because small acts of service, repeated often, create lasting change.

As the evening came to a close, Scout leaders and families expressed gratitude to their guests for investing time in Smyrna’s youth. The Troops presented each speaker with a Scout Law Flip Spin Challenge Coin, a symbol of the twelve principles that guide every Scout.

Chief Zgonc responded by presenting a Smyrna Police Department challenge coin to Silver Comet District

Executive Arisha Ali — an exchange representing mutual respect and shared values.

“Having leaders like Chief Zgonc, Deputy Chief Mohrmann, and Councilman Gould take the time to speak with our Scouts was truly inspiring,” said J. Barrett Carter, Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 220. “They reminded our young people that leadership is about service, something we strive to teach in Scouting every day.”

That spirit of service — and the generosity of time and wisdom shared — made this gathering more than just an evening meeting. It was a celebration of giving back, Smyrna-style: community leaders and young Scouts learning, together, what it means to serve.

TAKE A MOMENT TO FIND YOUR PEACE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY

As the festive season sweeps through Smyrna, bringing with it a joyful bustle of dazzling lights and spirited cheer, there’s a quiet, green corner in Taylor-Brawner Park, where a different kind of magic resides: the Healing Garden.

Tucked away from the main playground and historic halls, this sanctuary offers a crucial pause amidst the continuous rhythm of the holiday rush. Stepping onto the winding path that leads into the garden, the change in atmosphere is immediate. The dense surrounding foliage and deliberate, natural design creates a beautiful feeling of enclosure, effectively muting the sounds of the nearby road and park activity. The air here feels crisper, cleaner, and slower. Everywhere you look, the garden offers vignettes of natural simplicity: smooth, worn stones, the deep greens of evergreen shrubs, and the intricate pattern of bare branches forming a natural canopy overhead. Here in this peaceful clearing, you’ll find benches perfectly situated for quiet reflection. On a breezy day, your thoughts may be accompanied by the soft, resonant music of wind chimes hanging discreetly from the trees—a calming, natural soundtrack for contemplation and relaxation. This space is an intentional sanctuary, designed for your mind and spirit to relax and simply exist in the moment. In the cool December air, the Healing Garden takes on a particularly enchanting quality. It’s a moment to truly feel the essence of the season beyond the tinsel and wrapping paper, allowing the stillness of the landscape to quiet your mind and refocus your attention on the true meaning of the holiday season. This peaceful environment enhances the feeling of seasonal wonder, offering a unique type of connection and personal restoration. This is the garden’s depiction of holiday magic: the generous gift of stillness and solitude. It’s an invitation to step off the busy

“It’s an invitation to step off the busy path and settle into a deeper sense of peace.”

path and settle into a deeper sense of gratitude, a gentle reminder that the festive spirit is about peace and renewal. So, whether you are passing through on a morning run, taking a brisk walk, or enjoying a family stroll, make the effort to divert your path to the Healing Garden. Its quiet beauty and welcoming atmosphere makes the perfect spot to stop, breathe, and quietly absorb the true wonder of the season.

The Gift of Giving

Local voices share the causes closest to their hearts this holiday season.

In Smyrna-Vinings, generosity shines year-round—but it feels especially meaningful during the holidays. From empowering youth and supporting families in need to uplifting first responders and creating opportunities for individuals with disabilities, each story reflects the compassion that defines our community. These local business owners, educators, and civic leaders remind us that giving isn’t just about the season—it’s about connection, gratitude, and the shared desire to make life a little brighter for others.

ALLEN, REALTOR

Augusta Training Shop

This time of year, I’m proud to support Augusta Training Shop and the incredible mission behind their work. They provide meaningful employment for adults with disabilities, offering a supportive space where each person can develop skills, set goals, and be celebrated for their unique worth. In a world that often moves too fast, I deeply value their focus on patience, purpose, and personal growth—qualities we could all use more of. Their signature handmade snowflakes and angels are a beautiful reflection of that spirit, with each one starting as a simple piece of wood and becoming art through human touch, care, and intention.

Threads of Kindness

My current favorite community organization is one established by the Cobb County School District Social Workers called “Threads of Kindness.” Their mission is to provide school clothing to students in need throughout the school year. This organization is especially meaningful to me because I can recall several times during my teaching career when I would wash clothing for my students in need. At the time, I had young children of my own and wasn’t making much money, so I couldn’t always buy clothes, but I knew that small things made a big difference. Later in my career, I began buying a few extra items when shopping for my own children and kept them in my classroom for students who needed them—there was never a time when I didn’t run out of clothes. While I still try to keep a few items available, I believe this organization has a broader reach and can support families with greater needs, and I’m truly honored to help in any way I can.

Support Smyrna

My favorite nonprofit is Support Smyrna. I am a huge supporter and fan of this nonprofit and the family that created it. I’ve had a firsthand account of how this organization helps Smyrna citizens. This program is supported by Smyrna citizens for Smyrna citizens, which in my opinion continues to make Smyrna one of the best cities in the country to live, work, and play.

RICKEY N. OGLESBY, JR., CITY COUNCILMAN – WARD 7

Krimson Community Foundation

My favorite nonprofit is Krimson Community Foundation, which operates in Smyrna and across the greater Atlanta area. The goal is to empower young men to achieve in all facets of life. Young men between grades 4–12 gain access to education, mentorship, scholarships, and community engagement. The foundation has gifted college scholarships to over 200 young men since 2005. Mentorship is one of the most selfless things you can do—it doesn’t take much time, but it’s a powerful way to give back and stay positively connected to our youth.

ANTHONY ALVAREZ, OWNER, THE VINEYARD WINE MARKET

Smyrna Public Safety Foundation

My favorite philanthropy is the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation. It’s meaningful to me because I believe a community’s health is built on its most essential services. Police and firefighters are more than just first responders; they are active citizens of Smyrna who participate in everyday life and build a sense of security through their visible presence. By supporting the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation, I help ensure that these dedicated individuals feel respected and appreciated for their vital role.

I love Support Smyrna, a local nonprofit that supports disadvantaged families right here in our community. During the holidays, they provide gifts for children of families in financial need. It’s great to see the immediate impact they provide in our city!

What is a Virtual Office?

The term “virtual office” implies multiple components of services. There is no defined spectrum of services that constitute a virtual office and each of us in the industry offers our own variation of services.

Most would probably imagine that a virtual office is in an office building, but the majority of business offering address services, what we call mailbox services (a subclass that advertises “virtual office” services) are not in office buildings and offer very limited services. Top tier provider TRUE Space offers industry leading address and mailbox services and a variety of extra services including email notifications when mail arrives, conference room rentals, physical workspace rentals, registered agent service, corporate formation and corporate filing services, all from professional office buildings. The lower end providers are in barred window warehouses in parts of the metro area that are not very safe (but they may have a beautiful website). Mid quality services may be a mailbox store in a retail strip mall. We all know that people now see a picture of a business’s building online, and that impacts how people perceive the business. Just as using a residential address cripples a business, use of a low-end mail service means similar penalties to success.

It is important to be aware that some virtual offices advertise “unique suite number”. This really means a “fake suite number” and it is detrimental to a small business to use one of these. In our connected digital world, systems will not accept the fake suite numbers, and even Google knows and will lower the search engine ranking of a business using a fake suite number on their website. That’s why at TRUE Space our clients use the real suite number and we sort mail internally. There is no negative to multiple businesses using the real suite number. With a real address, the business and marketing opportunities open up for a small business.

Mail service is a fundamental part of a virtual office. The level of mail service offered by various mailbox services, and virtual offices varies substantially. Listed from worst to best:

a) Mail Scanning Service where mail is scanned and sent to you via email

b) Pickup on your own – no notice (requires frequent drives to the location)

c) Pickup on your own – with email notices when mail arrives, and mail forwarding options. At TRUE Space we provide this level of service. Plus, we go one step further to include who the sender is, of each piece of mail, in the mail alert email. This is industry leading service that is not matched by any competitor.

The services to avoid at all cost are registered agent services that have tried to get into the virtual office business. Almost all operate illegally in that they are not registered with the US Post Office, and/or do not comply with USPS rules and procedures. The telltale sign is if they don’t require you to complete a US Postal Service Form 1583. Using the address of, and trusting your mail to an illegally operating business is a recipe for disaster.

A good virtual office should provide a conference room where you can meet potential clients, interview potential employees, hold team meetings and board meetings. The virtual office is an extension of your business, providing a boost to your business image, so you can continue to grow your business and succeed.

TRUE Space provides industry leading virtual office services at incredibly affordable rates.
