Dear Readers,
Welcome to our latest edition of Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle. This issue holds a special place in my heart as we turn our focus to two groups that bring immeasurable joy and vitality to our community: our children and our pets.

The laughter of children in our parks, their eager faces in our schools, and their boundless energy at local events remind us daily of the vibrant future we're nurturing. Our youngest residents aren't just tomorrow's leaders; they're today's inspiration, challenging us to see the world through fresh eyes and to continually strive for a better community.
Equally cherished are our animal companions. The bonds we form with our pets enrich our lives in countless ways, teaching us about unconditional love, responsibility, and the simple joys of companionship. Our community's love for animals is evident in our pet-friendly parks, local businesses, and the many animal welfare initiatives supported by our residents.
In this issue, we explore the many ways our community supports and celebrates both our children and our pets. From educational opportunities to healthcare, from recreation to charity events, Smyrna and Vinings continually demonstrate a commitment to providing the best possible environment for all our residents –young, old, two-legged, or four-legged.
As you peruse these pages, I hope you'll feel a renewed appreciation for the unique charm of our community. Whether you're a parent, a pet owner, or simply someone who values the vibrancy that children and animals bring to our neighborhoods, there's something here for everyone.
Thank you for your continued support of Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle. It's our privilege to highlight the best of our community and the special place that children and pets hold within it.

Atlanta’s unique Christ-centered school marks a decade of joyful learning, family support, and building strong foundations
“REDEEMER DAY SCHOOL PROVIDES CHRIST-CENTERED EDUCATION, NURTURING
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Redeemer Day School (RDS) in Atlanta provides a unique, Christcentered education that not only nurtures young minds but also supports entire families in their parenting journey. Founded after the closure of The Heiskell School, Redeemer emerged from the passionate dedication of educators who refused to let their unique ministry end.
The school’s mission is clear: to provide a Christcentered, teacher-directed, academically challenging environment while mentoring parents in Christcentered child-rearing. The school’s approach is deeply rooted in Biblical principles, beginning each day with devotion and prayer among staff members. Students start their mornings with an assembly that includes pledges to the American and Christian flags, scripture recitation, and songs of faith and patriotism. This routine sets the tone for a day where Biblical truths are woven into every aspect of learning.
The impact of this Christ-centered approach is evident in the lives of the students. As one parent, Janelle Laing, shares, “My children are growing in their faith daily and learning to set a firm foundation for their morals and values. The positive and encouraging, yet disciplined, approach at Redeemer Day School has influenced my children in countless ways - they love others well and cheer them on and are learning to handle disappointments with grace.”
What sets RDS apart is not just its focus on students but also its commitment to mentoring parents. The school employs a Director of Parent Mentoring, Jeannie Brostrand, who provides one-onone support, leads a weekly book club, and writes a “Mentoring Moment” column. The school also organizes Coffee & Learns and speaking events to address various parenting topics.

This support has been crucial for many families. Kathryn Root, another RDS parent, notes, “The teachers and staff at Redeemer are a source of encouragement, wisdom and advice for my husband and me. There are official events organized by the school to help parents tackle everything from potty training to technology.”
Academically, RDS maintains a challenging yet developmentally appropriate curriculum. The school’s emphasis on phonics and traditional teaching methods has proven effective, preparing students well for elementary school. The intentionally small size of the school allows for a personalized approach where each student is truly known and nurtured.
The founding of RDS is a story of determination and faith. When the Heiskell School closed, five of its dedicated teachers took on the challenge of starting a new school: Jenny Kwon, Pat Reynolds, Page Whitfield, Cheryl LeBlanc, and Connie Heiskell. They were aided by the help and encouragement of Heiskell parents, including Lori Holsinger (serving as Founding Board Chair) and Amber Vestal (serving as an assistant). Despite having no prior experience in establishing a school or business, their faith and the trust of families helped RDS flourish.
Looking ahead to the next decade, RDS remains committed to its founding principles. The school plans to continue honoring the legacy of the Heiskell School while staying true to its values and traditional teaching methods. RDS prides itself on fostering a close-knit community where families and teachers are like-minded and connected.
As RDS celebrates its first decade, it stands as a testament to the power of faithbased education and community support. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a respected institution, Redeemer Day School continues to fulfill its mission of providing a Christ-centered education that prepares children not just academically, but spiritually and emotionally for the challenges ahead. The school’s commitment to both student education and parent mentoring creates a well-rounded approach to child development, making RDS a unique and valuable resource in the Atlanta educational landscape.

LOCAL ARTIST BROOKE SHAW CAPTURES FURRY FRIENDS’ SPIRITS IN MINIATURE MASTERPIECES, TURNING CHERISHED COMPANIONS INTO TIMELESS TREASURES FOR PET-LOVING FAMILIES.
Smyrna Vinings’ own Brooke Shaw has found her niche in the art world, specializing in pet portraits that capture the unique essence of our furry friends. With a background steeped in European fine arts, Brooke’s journey began with whimsical anthropomorphic animal paintings before evolving into the creation of lovingly crafted pet portraits.
“This gives me a feeling of discovering all the special little details of the animal as I puzzle them together.”

Brooke’s process is as unique as the animals she portrays. “I prefer to paint a pet portrait in layers, without sketching it first,” she explains. “This gives me a feeling of discovering all the special little details of the animal as I puzzle them together.” Her focus on the fine details of eyes, ears, and expressions brings each portrait to life, resulting in hyper realistic miniatures that have become her signature style.
The artist’s talent for capturing a pet’s essence has led to some intriguing commissions. One of her most challenging projects involved painting two hairless Sphynx cats, one of which had only one eye. Brooke embraced the task, demonstrating her ability to convey the cats’ intense gazes despite their unusual appearance. “I’ve learned it’s much more impactful to evoke the spirit of the subject, rather than to drive myself crazy over details,” she shares. This philosophy allows her to create pieces that truly resonate with pet owners.
The emotional impact of Brooke’s work is evident in the reactions of her clients. “Pet owners are always overjoyed to see their beloved pet as a piece of art to show in their home,” she says. Memorial portraits, in particular, hold a special place in her heart, providing comfort to those who have lost a cherished companion.
As Brooke’s artistry continues to evolve, she’s expanding her repertoire to include larger, more stylized works incorporating people and nature alongside animals. However, her passion for capturing the essence of pets remains at the core of her art, ensuring that each piece is a unique and cherished representation of the bond between animals and their human families.

THE VININGS DOWN HILL 5K RUN FOR THE KIDS: UNITING ATLANTA’S RUNNERS, RAISING FUNDS FOR CHILDREN’S CHARITIES AND OFFERING A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION FOR PARTICIPANTS SINCE 1996.

For nearly three decades, The Vinings Down Hill 5K Run for the Kids has been a staple of the Atlanta running community, combining athletic challenge with charitable impact. Established in 1996 by Charles Heinz, a dedicated Rotarian and avid runner, this event has grown from its humble beginnings supporting Zoo Atlanta to become the signature fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland.
The race’s evolution reflects its deep community roots. While it started with a focus on animal welfare, The Vinings Down Hill 5K now primarily benefits local charities serving children in Cobb County. Longstanding recipients include Calvary Children’s Home, providing housing for children in need, and Good Samaritan Health Center, offering comprehensive medical and dental care to those unable to afford it. In a nod to its origins, Canine Companions remains a consistent beneficiary. The event’s impact continues to grow, with over twenty charities receiving grants in 2023, surpassing previous years.
What sets this race apart? For starters, its unique course. True to its name, a significant portion runs downhill, attracting both serious athletes looking to set personal records and casual runners seeking a less daunting 5K experience. Limited to 2,000 entries, the event fills up quickly, a testament to its popularity and well-organized nature.

The Vinings Down Hill 5K is more than just a race – it’s a community celebration. Wheelchair participants and stroller runners are welcomed, making it truly inclusive. Families can enjoy the 1K Kids Fun Run, while four-legged friends have their moment in the Doggie Dash and Costume Contest. Post-race, participants and spectators alike revel in a lively party atmosphere complete with music, games, giveaways, and plenty of refreshments.
As a Peachtree Road Race qualifier, the event draws a diverse crowd. Elite high school runners and serious athletes vie for fast times to secure better starting positions in Atlanta’s iconic July 4th race. However, the welcoming atmosphere ensures that runners and walkers of all abilities feel at home.
The Vinings Down Hill 5K Run for the Kids has become a beloved tradition, seamlessly blending competition, community, and charity. Whether you’re chasing a personal best, enjoying a family outing, or simply supporting a worthy cause, this August 10th event offers something for everyone. As it approaches its 30th anniversary, the race stands as a testament to the power of community initiative and the enduring legacy of its founder, Charles Heinz. So, lace up your running shoes, bring your family (furry members included), and be part of this uniquely Vinings experience that’s making strides for local charities, one downhill run at a time.

KATINA’S NURSE NEE NEE NURTURES YOUNG MINDS

ARTICLE
Local resident Katina, DNP, APRN, CRNA, is revolutionizing children’s health education with her innovative Nurse Nee Nee Series™. Drawing from her experience as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Katina has created a collection of books aimed at alleviating children’s fears and anxieties surrounding medical procedures.
The inspiration for the series came from Katina’s observations of pediatric patients struggling with the unknown aspects of medical care. “I was inspired to create the Nurse Nee Nee Series™ after years of watching pediatric patients exhibit negative emotions - fear, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed - that often result from not knowing what to expect,” Katina explains.
The impact of her work is already evident. After the release of “Anesthesia From A-Z With Nurse Nee Nee” last May, a mother shared how her son became enamored with the book, reading it nightly and even sharing it with his pediatrician during an appointment. This anecdote underscores the series’ effectiveness in demystifying medical experiences for young children.
Katina’s roots in Cobb County play a significant role in her work. The family-friendly atmosphere of the Smyrna Vinings area serves as a constant reminder of her mission. “When I see parents with their little ones at our parks, on the trails, and at community festivals and events, I immediately think about how my stories will help,” she says.
Looking ahead, Katina aims to establish herself as a child health literacy advocate. Her goals include making the Nurse Nee Nee Series™ a staple on children’s bookshelves at home, in school classrooms and libraries, and at pediatrician’s offices. This summer, she plans to release her first bilingual book, an English-Spanish translation of “Anesthesia From A-Z With Nurse Nee Nee,” along with a corresponding Pretend and Play Bundle.
“Empowering children through stories, Nurse Nee Nee turns medical fears into understanding.”
When she’s not writing or working as a CRNA, Katina unwinds on the Silver Comet trail, enjoying long walks, bike rides, and training runs. Her multifaceted approach to life and work exemplifies the vibrant spirit of our Smyrna Vinings community.

Dr. Lotz transforms smiles and lives, one patient at a time, while balancing the joys and challenges of motherhood.
Dr. Alena Lotz of Evergreen Orthodontics is redefining modern orthodontics. As a board-certified professional and mother of two, she blends cutting-edge technology with a warm, family-oriented approach. Motherhood has profoundly impacted Dr. Lotz’s professional life, making her more focused on providing high-quality, efficient care. Understanding the value of time for busy families, she has invested in the latest orthodontic technologies, including custom braces, appliances, and Invisalign Clear Aligners, which streamline treatment while maintaining excellent results.
Dr. Lotz’s commitment to conservative treatment planning stems from her maternal instinct. She approaches each case with the same care she would give her own family, recommending only necessary treatments. This patient-first philosophy has become a cornerstone of Evergreen Orthodontics’ practice. The success of Dr. Lotz’s practice is not a solo effort. She credits her “rockstar” team for ensuring efficient operations and maintaining a positive atmosphere. This supportive environment extends to her home life, where she has built a strong support system that allows her to pursue her professional aspirations while balancing family responsibilities.
Creating a welcoming environment for patients of all ages is one of Dr. Lotz’s primary goals. She has designed her office to feel more like a living room than a traditional dental office, fostering a clean, modern, and inviting space. The practice is known for its positive and fun atmosphere, complete with great music. Patients often express how much they enjoy their visits and even miss the office after their treatment concludes.
Dr. Lotz’s experience as a mother has enhanced her ability to connect with younger patients and their families. She invites parents to accompany their children during appointments, understanding the importance of transparency and trust in pediatric care. This opendoor policy allows parents to witness firsthand the care
their children receive, alleviating concerns and fostering a sense of community within the practice.
Embracing technology is another way Dr. Lotz caters to modern families. Evergreen Orthodontics offers online scheduling, digital intake forms, and text communication, recognizing the value of convenience for busy parents. Clinically, the practice utilizes intraoral scanners, eliminating the need for uncomfortable impressions and further enhancing patient comfort.
Beyond her practice, Dr. Lotz is deeply committed to community involvement. Evergreen Orthodontics actively participates in local initiatives, supporting organizations such as The Giving Garden, local schools, and The Girl Scouts. Dr. Lotz sees these interactions as opportunities to give back to the community that has supported her practice. Her passion for orthodontics extends to advocacy for her profession. She is actively involved with the Georgia Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontics, working to ensure the highest standards of care for patients across the country.
Dr. Alena Lotz stands out as a shining example of how professional excellence and personal values can harmoniously coexist. As Smyrna and Vinings residents seek orthodontic care, they find that Dr. Lotz is not just a skilled practitioner, but a caring professional who understands the delicate balance of family life and healthcare needs. Sometime after watching Friends in the dorm, but before streaming Ted Lasso in quarantine, the college admissions process changed completely. The details didn’t seem important until 8th grade turned to 9th and the college talk grew more prevalent in the parent chats. I figured it was time to do what I do best - research. I found a whole new vocabulary - institutional priorities, demonstrated interest, restricted early action, hooks, yield, enrollment management, holistic review - as well as increased selectivity, changing admissions policies, and a lack of clarity around what it will actually cost. It’s no wonder we feel the college stress mounting by junior year. I built a career designing strategic research to help companies make better business decisions - initially at IBM Corporate Headquarters and most recently in my own boutique firm. So when I began the research to untangle college admissions, I realized my skill set had the potential to level the playing field for students and families.

I am an Independent Educational Consultant. Families engage me to enhance, not replace, the school counselor. Much like a position coach, therapist, or private tutor, I give highly personalized guidance in my specialty area. I meet families individually on key topics like college affordability, admissions trends & implications, college criteria and application timelines. But mostly I meet one-on-one with students, working through a curriculum of assessments, college research, the essay program, and weekly meetings senior year until everything is submitted. The personalized guidance and structured plan reduces stress between students and parents in the fleeting months of high school.
Staying current is imperative in this dynamic environment. For me, nothing is more informative and energizing than getting on campus. I logged 40 unique visits in the past 18 months, ranging from Harvard to University of Oregon, developing actionable admissions intelligence like how Admissions Officers review files and perceive fit, campus culture, student support, and unique opportunities.
As we close out the 2024 cycle, we continue to see fluctuating admissions practices (end of affirmative action, reconsidering legacy admissions), increasing applications / declining acceptance, standardized testing changes (testing policies, digital & adaptive administration), and the FAFSA debacle’s ripple effect on waitlist movement.
As a first-generation college student, education changed my life. I would be honored to share what I’ve learned to help students in our community along their own paths. I can do college planning, so you can do more of life together.

Elizabeth Hughes bakes healthy dog treats - with heart - from three simple, locally-sourced ingredients

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY
BY BECCA MCCOY

Elizabeth Hughes and her husband Shea expanded their family a decade ago when they adopted their fur baby Lollie Mae. “Like any parent, we wanted the very best for our girl. I started making her simple treats with prime ingredients.” Elizabeth used the pumpkins they grew on their land in Waleska, GA, peanut butter, and whole wheat flour – plus a fourth ingredient: Love. The results were too good not to share, and their small business Lollie Made was born. “We stamp every single treat in the center with a heart! It is time consuming, but the heart symbol means a lot to me.” Lollie Made treats have rewarded countless good girls and boys – all because of the very best girl of them all.
Lollie Made has an online shop with subscription options at lolliemade.com / Find them in person at farmer’s markets including Smyrna Handmade Market: Sundays, 10am-2pm in Smyrna Market Village through October / Follow them on Instagram @lolliemade

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEE & MELISSA FULFORD
How
we manage to spoil as many dogs as possible without leaving our home.
You know those people with nose-printed car windows and paw-shaped bumper stickers? The ones who walk in your door and go straight to the floor to greet your dogs? That’s us. We are pet people.
We deliver holiday treat bags to all of the cats and pooches in our neighborhood, but in most cases, we would be hard-pressed to name their owners. “I chatted with Boomer’s mom on the trail today” is the way we start many conversations.
We have been married almost 10 years and our only ‘kids’ are the furry kind. As a result, our animals get treated to a pretty cushy lifestyle. Their sole responsibility is to pose for holiday photos in costumes which we refer to as ‘paying their taxes’.
When our beloved dog Biggs passed away a few years ago we were at a total loss of what to do with ourselves. Even the cat looked confused by not having someone to fight with over water bowl privileges. We knew we needed some time to grieve before adopting again. However, we found ourselves slightly unmoored without a pup to fuss over. And so, we passed word around to friends and family that we would watch their dogs any time they went on vacation. Word spread quickly, and soon ‘Camp Fulford’ became a popular destination.
It turns out that keeping pets in your home, spoiling them rotten, and not charging money for it is a service that’s in high demand. (Entrepreneurial types may spot a slight flaw in the business model…) But we get a great deal of joy from our furry friends, so we think we are getting the better part of the bargain.
We truly believe that pets are family, and that applies to ones who are with us just a short time. We have come to appreciate all of the different quirks and traits they bring, from the ones who live to chase toys to those who hog pillows and the universal canine joy of barking their heads off during Amazon deliveries.
We have kept Camp going even after getting our own permanent dog, Maple, because of the fun that we get from our visitors. Maple gets a stream of different playmates and some badly needed experience with sharing, and we get to enjoy the fun of multi-dog greetings and ‘pack walks’.
And yes, the campers pose for photos as well, as not even visitors can get away from paying taxes.
We have learned a lot of valuable lessons from our Campers along the way. They remind us to live in the moment and to find great delight in the simple things. They demonstrate the restorative power of a good nap, a long walk, or the touch of someone we love. In short, they coach us to see life as an adventure and to make time every day to play.
Lee and Melissa Fulford are long-time Smyrna residents who enjoy spending time with their fur family, reading, and exploring places off the beaten path. Their current hobbies include embracing middle age, searching for the world’s best tacos, and juggling.

The days are long, but the years go fast. So they say with raising children. I have to agree with that sentiment. Each year as summer ends I find myself looking at my kids and reminding myself to “Watch them grow!” Both as a reminder to not miss the growth (with all the distractions and responsibilities that adult life brings) but also as reflection on how far they’ve come since the last time we turned the calendar page to August. Whether there are children in your life or not, I’m sure we can all agree that childhood is fleeting. Instead of stopping to smell the roses, I need to remind myself to “stop and watch them grow”—you can’t see it if you stare, but you’ll surely miss it if you blink! It helps me to set aside intentional time to be present with these fast little growers.
For us that looks like setting a special table to spend time sharing (or drawing) how we’ve seen them grow over the summer before jumping back into school routines. Making DIY game boards together and then having a family game night. Making snow cones for an after-dinner treat or, for a bigger wow factor, for breakfast! They will never forget that one, I promise. (Psst! my snow cones are made with fruit juice so it’s Mommy approved too!)
As August rolls in and the calendar tells us that it’s time for back-to-school shopping, the weather does not usually agree that the times are changing. I find that it’s such
a weird dance between what looks like the change of seasons when I open my calendar but not when I walk out my back door (heat wave!). On one hand, we’re still in full throttle of blazing temperatures in the Midwest and with no end in sight. At the same time, being thrown into back-to-school shopping, Meet-the-Teacher nights, resuming the regiment of packing school lunches, and if you’re a homeschool parent, all the to-do lists and lesson plans in order to launch into another school year. As we find ourselves
with one foot in summer and the other in a classroom, how do we embrace and (dare I say) celebrate this month? Instead of feeling ungrounded in the juxtaposition of August, I am inviting myself, and anyone who would join me, to embrace the opportunity to celebrate the in-between seasons that this month brings. My hope is that these ideas help spark your imagination on how to keep you cool in the heat, launch your kiddos into a new school year, and to set aside time to watch them grow.

Welcome more play into your life with this little DIY project. At our house we like to keep outdoor game boards around for short moments together as well as full blown game nights. These game boards are meant to be kept outside but could also be brought indoors as well.
Materials
• Pebbles for Checkers, 24 similar sized
• Small stones for Tic-Tac-Toe, 8 similar sized
• Acrylic paints (black, red, yellow and white)
• Paint brush
• Raw wooden boards + black paint marker
• Reclaimed wood + black acrylic paint
• Polycrylic spray
Instructions
1. Game Pieces: Paint your rocks with acrylic paint. For Tic-TacToe you’ll need a total of 8 rocks, 4 of each type (here I’ve painted 4 lady bugs and 4 bumble bees). For Checkers you’ll need a total of 24 rocks, 12 of each color (here I’ve used black stones, painting half of them red).
2. Game Board: For raw wood (such as our Tic-Tac-Toe board), use a ruler and black paint marker to create board lines. For reclaimed or treated wood, use paint. Let game pieces and game boards fully dry. Seal with a polycrylic spray for protection from heat and moisture.
We adore snow cones at our house! If you’ve been to our house then we’ve probably served them to you. A shaved ice machine makes it oh-so-easy! You can purchase premade snow cone syrup flavors or make your own healthier version by using fruit juice concentrates. Simply thaw the frozen fruit juice concentrate and put the liquid into squeezy bottles for an easy way to pour over shaved ice.
Assemble
• Ice, lots of ice!
• Snow Cone Machine
• Snow Cone Cups
• Snow Cone Straws
• Snow Cone Syrups (or frozen juice concentrates, thawed)

August 1 will be a big day in Cobb County. More than 106,000 students will wake up early that morning and excitedly make their way to one of our 112 schools. I vividly remember the excitement that the day brings. That is when you get a new teacher, new classmates, and most importantly, a clean, fresh slate.
New beginnings should always feel this way. There is no proverbial hole that we have to dig ourselves out of. We can reclaim the impressions we leave on the people that matter because we don’t have negative ones that we are forced to overcome. Our scorecards and relationships are lifted to sea level. The prospects of a new year infuse our lives with life-giving hope.
The Gospel of John contains two stories that reverberate with the same ring. In chapter three, when Jesus is sought out by a prominent teacher looking for truth, He tells him: “No one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” Doesn’t this sound like a fresh start? Then, in chapter 4, when

“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
- John 3:3
Jesus goes out of his way to have a life-changing conversation with a woman at Samaria, his words leave her with such hope that she invites everyone from her town to come and hear from him too. But don’t miss this: It’s not that Jesus doesn’t know of their past. He tells the woman everything she has ever done. And yet, when both people come to him in faith, he gives to them both a clean slate. Isn’t this what grace is all about? I know you need this. We all do. Join us at First Baptist as we serve a God who knows us fully and still loves us more than we can ever hope to describe!

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATIE WASSERMAN

The long, relaxed days of summer are coming to an end and school has started … yet again. We’re back to the grind of school lunches, evenings of sports practices, and weekends full of kid activities. The last thing anyone wants to worry about at the end of these busy days is making a complicated dinner! My recipe for Chicken Caesar Wraps is perfect for quick dinners or a super easy lunchbox meal. Serve these wraps with chips, crunchy veggies, French fries or tater tots and you’ll have a meal everyone in the family will love!
• 5-6 of your favorite chicken fingers (I use my kids’ favorite frozen chicken fingers)
• 1 bag of Ceasar Salad mix
• 1/2 cup of grated parmesan
• Ceasar or ranch dressing
• flour tortillas or any wraps you like
directions:
1. Cook or warm your chicken tenders until crispy. Cut into large cubes.
2. Pour salad into a large bowl. Add chopped chicken fingers, grated Parmesan cheese, and as much dressing as you prefer.
3. Lay tortilla or wrap on a cutting board. Spoon the salad mixture down the middle of the wrap. Roll tortilla as you fold in the sides of the of the wrap.
4. Cut in half and serve.
