Embracing Love & Community: A Letter from the Editor Dear readers, This time of the year always presents a delightful conundrum for me, and perhaps you feel the same way too. On one hand, there's the inclination to resist the commercialization of yet another “greeting card holiday,” and on the other, a desire to fully embrace the sweet excuses that the season offers for celebration. The dilemma of choosing between a Valentine's Day date out or a cozy night at home, between purchasing a card or simply expressing affection through words, is a familiar one. While personally, I tend to navigate a middle ground, I’m sure we’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities. What we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s issue will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in our Smyrna Vinings community. While we teeter between the chill of Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life— those within your home, on your street, in your neighborhood, and throughout your community. "Love local" extends beyond supporting local businesses; it encompasses cherishing what is close to you, including those under your own roof. Atlantic Station Welcomes World-Renowned illy's First Georgia Location

The 2023 Shop with a Hero touched the lives of 82 kids and brought together 63 first responders from SPD, SFD, and Metro Atlanta Ambulance Services. The event thrived with the dedicated assistance of volunteers, including SPSF Board Members, American Legion, Barrow Wrecker, Oakdale Church of God, and other community partners. With a remarkable outpouring of support, around 30K was raised, making this donation drive one of the most successful.

One of the greatest lessons we can learn in life is that intimacy does not have to be reserved for romantic relationships alone. Some of my deepest and most profound moments of human connection have been ones shared with my closest girlfriends. These partnerships are as vital and worthy of celebration as their romantic counterparts, and as such, my group of girls has taken to throwing something called a Galentine’s Party. Galentines (a mash-up of the words Valentines and Gal) is loosely defined as “ladies celebrating ladies” and is unofficially celebrated on

February 13th. While the concept of Galentine’s Day got its start from the popular sitcom “Parks and Recreation” in 2010, it has since been widely adopted by pop culture as a fun and festive way to celebrate your girl gang. Brunch is the most popular Galentine theme out there because, let’s face it, there is little better on this planet than a boozy breakfast with your besties that lasts half the day. It is as easy as making a reservation and setting that group text chat alive with plans to coordinate your outfits to get the best photo ops possible. CONTINUED >

A good low-key way to celebrate is to simply gather around your kitchen table with your gals, some good snacks, and some crafting supplies, and make one another Galentine’s Day cards. This is an excellent option if you are in your Small Children Era, and things like getting dressed up to go out are too much of a struggle. It is nice to soak up the pleasure of each other’s company while creating something. And at the end, everyone

takes home their cards to read at their leisure. Make the message of the cards as silly or as serious as you wish. The bonus is the cards are a lasting memento of time well spent and can be read again and again throughout the year. Put them on your fridge as a daily reminder or tuck them in your nightstand to read after a hard day.

My Galentines and I have now escalated our Galentine’s Day celebrations to a full weekend at a cabin in the mountains. Every February, we come together for 4 days to sit around in our pajamas, drink wine, eat too much cheese, and celebrate our love for each other. We look forward to this weekend all year long, and the memories we make during that time together help sustain us when we go back to our busy lives of work and motherhood. The ways to celebrate are endless. The point is female friendship is an essential form of love and deserves a party all its own.

For some people, that’s in a community, for some it’s when you’re with the ones you love, but for Allison Schorr, proprietor of The Secret Gallery, it’s a physical space. “Ever since I was a kid, I made things for my room that would make it feel sacred and special, to infuse peace and comfort into it.” Her passion for a curated space aligned with her journey as a mixed media artist and culminated in the creation of one of Smyrna’s hidden gems. Love, viewed as passion, practicality, or a profound emotional connection, serves as the guiding principle of the Golden Rule, encouraging us to treat others as we would want to be treated. The roots of our beliefs about love, extending from personal to community levels, take hold in our homes. Our homes mold our approach to love, caregiving, and emotional bonds within the family. Home is where our past and family history leave a lasting imprint on our identities, relationships, and sense of belonging. Present-day factors, such as caring for aging parents, work demands, family growth, and personal well-being, shape how we express love within the family. As 2024 unfolds, the conversation around caring for aging parents dominates family discussions. The baby boom generation, aged 60 to 74, seeks to age in place, maintaining independence and proximity to loved ones. While the desire to age at home is prevalent, concerns about safety, daily activities, and community mobility arise. Planning for aging in place becomes crucial before the need for assistance arises. Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. From Pennington’s Pen: I am a child of the eighties, so if there is a holiday that I would miss if it ceased to be, it is Valentine’s Day. I have fond memories of going with my mom to buy Valentines’ Day cards for every one of my classmates. Don’t you love the heart candy with messages like, “B-Mine” and “Tru-Love”? Now that I’m dad to four girls and husband to a wife who I still can’t believe said “I do” 21 years ago, February 14th is a day that I always mark on my calendar. Apparently, I’m not the only one. In 2020, Americans spent $27.4 Billion in celebration of Valentines’ Day. That’s a lot of candy and flowers! I guess sappiness only gets us so far. But real love, in its truest since, is much different. In 1 Corinthians Paul calls it the most excellent way. One commentator says that love is the essential element that makes everything in life important, while simultaneously making everything else unimportant. So take a moment and allow 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 to have its full effect on your heart and mind: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not

irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” No wonder love is the most excellent way. Love changes everything because God is love and love is Christ! Jesus did not come to simply show us the way of love and awaken something in us that without Him would have stayed dormant. Through giving His life on a cross, Jesus enables us to live so that we are capable of love. When we receive Christ, we receive the ability to love, and in finding love, we also find life. We would be honored if you would come and join us at First Baptist as we seek to live for the pleasure of the God who is love (1 John 4:8). Happy Valentine’s Day!
